Went again while back in the area- and I of course had to get some of their cookies! Their sweet potatoes were also divine.

The patty is a mix of oats and mushrooms, and the "cheese"--which is actually a cashew-based creation with oil--has a subtle flavor. It also comes with a vegan ranch-style dressing. When I tried it, the overall taste was nutty and mushroom-forward. Does it taste like beef? Not really. It's more like a lightly seasoned, spongy mushroom patty with hints of the creamy cashew "cheese" and dressing. The burger is a bit messy and tends to fall apart, so you'll want to eat it over something or wrap it in plastic or parchment. Alternatively, you can order it as a wrap, including a gluten-free option for just $1 more. Honestly, I think the wrap might be the better choice over the burger bun. I also tried the chili, which had a distinct split pea flavor with plenty of beans and a nutty undertone. The potato salad was creamy, made with diced potatoes that were lightly seasoned. It wasn't particularly memorable, but it was fine. Overall, for $13, the meal was decent. I don't approach vegan food expecting it to mimic fast food; I look for quality and originality, and this place offers something that's passable. The vibe is very indie and hipster, with a sense that they put care and spirit into their food. I've walked past this place before--I even visited once with my sister to try the cornbread and chili, which were okay--so I figured I'd stop in again. The location has charm, but the food didn't leave a lasting impression. It's good for what it is, and I appreciate the effort, but nothing really stood out. I've read other reviews saying the quality was better pre-COVID, though I can't speak to that since I never ate here before the pandemic. If that's true, it makes sense. Would I come back? I'm not sure why this vegan location has star rating of 3.9 when it should be a perfect 5 I say this because from time to time I do make a visit to this location but recently in 2024, I visit Before my birthday and on my birthday and after my birthday. All three experiences were so laid back and relaxing. I've even livestream my experience for social media. The food was and always made fresh and taste very good. Now, I'm homeless too now and I was able to afford my meals. The tomato soup they offer at the time of my visit, was do Balance and not heavy but creamy, flavor hit the brain with a wow. The vegan meatball parm was incredibly so good, I wanted another one for sure. Brussels sprouts are to die for. Cooked well and seasoned with balance. Toad Style opened when vegan junk food was still considered an oxymoron, at least for the omnivore normies who associated veganism with macro bowls filled with raw veggies. Perhaps some people still have this association, but finding vegan cheezburgers, vegan mac n cheese and vegan quesadillas, all of which you can find on the menu at Toad Style, is not hard in every borough, so while I thank them for being a pioneer of this cuisine in Brooklyn, I won't be returning. One thing I appreciate here is that you can get any one of their many sandwich in two waffles instead of bread. They even provide you with syrup and this blend of sweet and savory went well enough with the tofu scramble I ordered. Uniquely, instead of soy, they make tofu with chickpea flour, much like they do in Burmese cuisine. The texture of this chickpea based scramble did not hold up very well though and had little flavor. On the flip side, both bbq jackfruit and ceasar salad were overly salted, but lacking any depth of flavor. It pains me to say this because they seem like good people but this place disappoints me every time. I had the Burmese "tofu" scramble sandwich and it had a mushy, almost slimy texture and a weirdly bitter after taste. It's possible this was just a bad batch but I'm not getting it again to find out. Ambiance wise: we didn't get a great vibe but soldiered on in, considering we're on a vegetarian diet currently. My wife and I tried their $11 Soup and Salad lunch specials, with tomato soup and Kale and Caesar varieties of salad. Being used to Dig (formerly Dig Inn), I thought it sounded like a square deal until I saw the trays. The salads are surprisingly spartan (small, boxed, refrigerated, mostly leafy greens), and the dressings for our salads came out entirely congealed, rendering them inedible gels. I asked for lemon wedges as an alternative. They didn't have any. I asked for anything else I could use as an oil-free dressing (due to dietary restrictions). No options offered other than reheating my cold-gelled olive oil plastic cup in the microwave. No thanks! I ended up using the last of my soup as an impromptu dressing atop my kale salad. I'm not a fan of the wanna-be meat / impossible burger offerings, so I appreciate their patty choice. The burger itself had a nice crisp on the outside and a dense and soft center. Personally I love that, maybe not the texture for everyone though. The cashew dill cheese adds the perfect amount of creaminess. Nearly forgot there was no dairy in this. My only wish for this burger is that the bun was warmer, I would have loved that moist mouthful that a hot bun offers. I do appreciate the ratio of greens, the peppery arugula did a lot for me. All in all, the Sunshine Burger was quite delicious. Didn't feel like shit after eating it. Not greasy. And you can tell it's made with quality ingredients. The menu understandably shrunk amidst the pandemic and never recovered, leaving behind banh mi sandwiches, philly cheese steaks, gyros, deep fried cauliflower, and my favorite fries in the neighborhood. And the fried foods are apparently so sorely missed that they've had to put up a sign saying they're no longer available because people keep asking. Service is usually quick when in-person, though I always call ahead to avoid prolonged time with the cook who ran through the middle of the intersection at Ralph and Putnam who I yelled at for making me slam on the brakes while he sauntered past the "don't walk" signal. A good vegan sandwich. Toad style is a fast-casual takeout spot that serves all vegan items. The interior is small and cozy with friendly workers. No indoor seating during covid times, and only a small bench outside. I tried the BBQ jackfruit sandwich. It was flavorful and the bread held up against the fillings. Fresh slaw and tart pickles bumped up the flavor. I would love if they piled on the BBQ jackfruit a bit more since the bread is so plain and there's a good amount of it, or maybe even butter the roll. Overall, a solid spot. I had been wanting to visit Toad Style for a while, but was never in the area. However, now that I work 15 mins (walking) from here, I can come as often as I like. Yay! The employees are polite and very knowledgeable about the menu. After indecisively reading the menu for 5 minutes, and talking to the cashier I ordered the Sunshine burger. And I also got the cheese fries. Everything is still to-go right now, so you can't sit inside because the few benches they have are covered. And there's also no seating outside the shop, it would be nice if they added some though. When I first opened my box of cheese fries it didn't look too enticing but once I took a bite I was obsessed. They are not greedy with the cheese, literally every fry was covered. Next time I'd like to try the fries plain, because they were cooked perfectly, and I'm sort of a fry fanatic. Wow I'm not sure what happened to Toad Style but it's gone down hill. Many of the signature dishes it was known for have disappeared from the menu. No big deal! That's what happens at restaurants, right? That would be fine if the new options tasted good. The mac and cheese was TERRIBLE! The texture and flavor were way off. My Greek salad was so sad. Wilted lettuce,shriveled tomatoes, and a "dressing" that was just olive oil and pepper. The phone is always off the hook and new employees aren't the warmest. When it comes to vegan food one is most concerned about cheese. Oh wait maybe that's just me. The cheese at Toad Style is so freaking mouth watering delicious that you can't believe that it's not cheese. It's some of the best vegan comfort food I've had. There's definitely a pretty price tag and the portions are huge. I would strongly recommend coming with a group of four and sharing some sandwiches and sides. The cheesy fries were perfect. The bahn mi is always a win. And the mushroom cheesesteak fulfills my need for vegan gluttony!!! There's only a couple tables here. It's still in a not so crowded neighborhood but people are definitely making that commute. There's one bathroom and you have to pour yourself some water. And don't forget to order at the register. I especially loved coming here after a work out at the Blink or a bike ride. It's perfect for reloading after working hard. I need to come back for jack fruit. Aw man this is so sad to write. Toad Style used to be a haven for vegan junk food. The fries with cashew cheese-- a dream. There are no more fries. The vegan cheeseburger, once delectable, is now a sad interpretation of what it once was. It fell apart in my hands after the first bite. It comes with a sauce that honestly is better than the wings itself. Personally it would be better if it had more taste to it. VEGAN, GLUTEN FREE REVIEW: I had high hopes for Toad Style. I trekked from the city ... in the rain ... without an umbrella, and was sorely disappointed. I ordered the BBQ Jackfruit as a salad. The BBQ sauce was missing something (maybe more tanginess? or richer flavor?) and the salad was slathered in a creamy ranch-like sauce which I actually did not mind. Usually too much dressing is a turn-off but it was a good flavor booster in this salad. The pickles were an interesting touch but I can't say I loved it with the meal. All in all, this salad did not do it for me. I tried to like it, but I just didn't. I would be interested in trying some other menu items but would hate to be disappointed again. Oh the joys of vegan junk food. I mean you walk in to the soothing sounds of the deep fryer. And some tunes. But, it isn't all fatty. I've grown an appreciation for Toad Style, because unlike most vegan diners or fast food joints, they don't rely heavily on Fake meat! They're actually soy-free, gluten-free and creatively use vegetables as meat replacements. For example, their Philly Cheesesteak is made with portobello mushrooms. What would compare to a pulled pork sandwich uses BBQd pulled jackfruit. There are some patties like the mushroom & lentil used in the cheeseburger. The fried cauliflower is bomb and delicious with the sweet chili mustard they pair it with. I think my palate has grown accustomed to the over-processed soy clan, but I'm more than happy to trade that out for actual vegetables and not mystery fake meat. I'm slowly making my way down the menu and so far fried cauliflower is the winner (among the cheeseburger and Philly cheesesteak). Unfortunately, toad style seems to be going downhill with their food. When I first started coming here 2 years ago this was a go to place of mine. Now, it's disappointment after disappointment. I usually get a cowgirl with cauliflower bites (they didn't have the cauliflower bites or fries available); so I decided to try there Mac and cheese and a salad - I thought, you can't go wrong with those. I was pretty wrong once I got home. I paid $17 for NOTHING. My boyfriend quoted "that's a sorry ass salad" and he was right. This spot is now overpriced and the quality of food is going down.
