I had heard great things about Toast, but it just didn't live up to the hype. The waitstaff seemed uninterested in serving me - like it was a chore to even take my order. The food was okay, but nothing special. The restaurant itself was COLD inside. Granted it was in the single digits outside the day that I went in, but the place does have heat! So why they weren't using it is beyond me. I was actually shivering at my table, and ended up having to wear my jacket to be able to enjoy my meal. Unbelievably rude - will never return I went this AM and waited and I asked if I could take an order to go (traveled from NY with friends and they were still sleeping - wanted to surprise them with breakfast) The woman that came up to me said 'no take out' and quickly turned her back on me and started taking someone's order. I stood their shocked and another wait staff (woman) came up to me and the same thing happened. Both very rude and I said to her turned back, what if I just sit down and order it (I would have given great tip??) she said NO without even turning around. I went outside and I stood there just kind of stunned and there were a bunch of people outside (it's a little strip of 5 other stores). We started chatting and I told them what just happened and everyone outside there said the place is well known for rude / bad service - Went down the street to another restaurant and what a difference!! Really nice staff. I told them what happened and the lady said everyone in this area knows about their rude reputation... even a customer behind me agreed their reputation is well known. First time here this past weekend, was fantastic. Was a little bummed to not be able to get lunch on Sunday, but the breakfast we had made up for it! I had hash (little salty but good) with scrambled eggs (fluffy and fresh!) and whole wheat toast (I think their butter has crack in it since it was addictive) and hash browns (proper hash browns! I can tell what part of Boston you're from in one sentence by accent alone. I can decipher what ingredients were used in a marinade and I can transport myself back in time just by closing my eyes and imagining a memory. Blink.... Click click click,... the chain pulled me up the 94 foot apex of the rickety wood framed monster that's haunted me in my dreams. Seagulls and clouds are all I saw because I was too scared to look down. I only did it to shut my little brother Sean up who wouldn't let me live it down that he had bigger cajones than I. I regretted it, but persevered despite butterflies the size of albatrosses mixing it up in my stomach. At the top was the most amazing view ever. I could see the Caterpillar and the Tilt a Whirl in the distance encircled by bluish green water dotted with people. Then the drop lifted me out of my seat and I opened my eyes .....to enter the breakfast diner in Hull called Toast. There's usually a wait but the food is well worth it. I broke tradition by not ordering the Creme Brulee French Toast. It's crack. I went with the Italian Sausage Skillet with two eggs over easy cloaked in hollandaise sauce and Cranberry Pecan Toast. The sausage was mixed with the crunchy stringy home fries that had cheese onions peppers and jalapenos speckled throughout. My puddin skin daughter got the Mediterranean Omlette with extra feta cheese. Both were exceptional. A vast menu and priceless view can be had while harkening back to 1984. just close your eyes. I've been to Toast twice and enjoyed it both times. If you like tea with your breakfast, this is a place for you. Not only do they give you an individual pot of water in a cute little tea pot, but they also give you a wide variety of teas to choose from, some of which are a little on the fancier side and not the type you normally stock in your home. Both times I dined here, I came as a twosome so we've never had to wait for a table and have never had anything but friendly and efficient service. My boyfriend once got the Wave (mentioned in a review below) and it was the perfect breakfast to get a little bit of everything. The omelettes here are huge and very filling. I've also had the Fireking French Toast from a local bakery and that was delicious as well. The only thing that I don't like about the place is that they portion out the syrup in a cup on your plate and if you want more, you have to pay extra. I stopped in for some quick breakfast before relaxing at the beach for a bit. Not too large of a place, but my wait for a seat at the bar was only about a minute. Had I wanted a table I probably would have had a ten minute wait. I had a female server in her 20's I would say, with curly light hair. She was friendly at first. (More on this later) After looking over the menu, I spotted Creme Brûlée French Toast with Caramelized sugar, and real maple syrup. I ordered that with some sausage links, and (as written on the menu) "freshly squeezed" orange juice. As I was waiting for my food I was staring at the containers of juice in the fridge, and noticed cartons of orange juice. My food came approximately 10 minutes later looking very yummy! When she brought the food I pointed, and asked her if that was the orange juice in the containers as I thought it was freshly squeezed. She replied Yes, and something to the effect of 'We can't squeeze it in the back' her expression was that of me speaking some insanely crazy idea. Numerous restaurants I frequent do in fact have in house freshly squeezed OJ, and it wasn't out of the ordinary around Boston. But in any event I was polite about the whole thing, and asked her if I could just have a water instead. At this point, she was noticeably disturbed, and seemed to get aggravated at me. She kind of walked away quick, and gave me water, with very quick communications for the rest of my time there. I would have gave 5 stars if she kept a smile, and that didn't happen. Breakfast here this am. Awesome western omelet and pecan toast, Been here numerous times- usually with out-of town guests when they are staying over and it's always a hit. Not the cheapest breakfast, but well worth it. Usually busy on the weekends so there's plenty of trinkets, signs and antiques to look at around the restaurant. Haven't read many great things about Toast but we were willing to try and see for ourselves. I'm glad we did because I have nothing but positive things to say. The wait seemed it would be long since we didn't get there until 11 on a Sunday morning, sat at the counter and were readily greeted by Jess. Drinks were quick and the food was delicious! I had my go to bacon and cheese omelette with hash browns and a side of limp bacon, everything was excellent. A DEFINITE MUST! I've been going to this place for 6 years and I have never had a bad meal here. They have the best breakfast in MA. Some of the complaints on here relate to the owner which is unfair. She probably only gets upset when people are on their cell phones which is a major no-no in this small place. Your best bet is to go during the week or early in morning if you don't want to wait longer then a few minutes. Breakfast must haves: Cape Cod Homefries: chunks of potatoes with grated potatoes with peppers, onions, cheese and sausage. Best with a side of scrambled eggs. Blueberry pancakes are another great choice. Locals also rave about the "Burnt Toast". Lunch must haves: Turkey club sandwich with roasted turkey and just enough mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and bacon to make it the best one I've ever had anywhere. My husband and I went here for the first time the morning of our anniversary because our local favorite in Hingham (Star) was super crowded. We didn't wait long to be seated which was great, the space was cozy and fun. We did however wait about 45 minutes for our meals. The server felt really bad, and she and the manager (I think) came by a few times to let us know it wouldn't be long. I ordered a waffle (ONE WAFFLE) and my husband and the "Wave". He loved his meal in the end, which helped, but my one waffle wasn't anything special and the bacon I ordered extra crispy was limp and soggy. The waitress offered to take it back but at that point we were both just ready to get out of there. We were told that meals usually take 35-45 minutes, which for breakfast seems excessive to me, pretty sure we won't go back. read more

So I'm from trumbull CT, I go restaurant hunting in my spare time. while on a trip to my aunts we went out for breakfast at Toast. Toast is a very unique diner, they serve both breakfast and lunch. The atmosphere is very friendly, the decor is interesting. I ordered the Vermont cheddar cheese omelet, and I must say very well made(compliments to the chefs). It is all fresh made food. Even though it took a little while to make, I believe that it was well worth the wait, and they were always making sure we were set on drinks and such. It is worth visiting if your around. read more

My husband and I drove to Nantasket early Sunday morning and decided to get some bagels and coffee at Toast. My husband walked in and was gone for about 10-15 minutes. He came out empty handed and said "they were so rude to me, told me I should have called ahead and ordered the bagels. After I stood there for 10 minutes, the woman behind the counter said 'it will be 45 minutes for take out, you should have called ahead' (waitress already said that to him)." Toast. Saturday mornings on the South Shore would be bland without you! Assuming you can get a seat without waiting forever (this place is very popular), Toast is excellent. Every dish is a homemade homerun. It's the real deal. I had the Creme Brulee french toast last time I went. After I recovered from the sugar coma, I decided that this was positively the most lively and unique little breakfast dish I'd ever had. Yum. The Hot Chocolate is excellent, topped with real cream. The potatoes and omelettes are flavorful and fresh. Definitely worth a fan. Just need to figure out how to handle larger crowds! read more

This is the place I take any visitors for brunch. they love that it's on the ocean, not a chain and the place has character and the food is awesome. The service is not lightning fast but it's not slow or rude either. It just is that kind of place where they get to you when they get to you. If you want fast in and out go to Denny's - god help you. The place is small. There is always a wait if you go during brunch. Again. That's the way it is. During season, you could potentially starve or miss a meal. I see people with many kids and they seem to do OK, but I wouldn't choose it because of the wait to sit and the wait to be served. That's just me. The staff is also very knowledgeable about where to go or what to do in the area and the history - again a plus for people who are new or visiting the area - or if you like to chat up the locals. Why would people willingly pay for abuse??? The positive reviews I expect are from regulars who have passed some sort of litmus test from the staff on their pain tolerance. We will never go back. The sign says "worth the wait". I roll my eyes. It's Sunday. I'm in Hull. Sunny with a bit of cloud on a late Oct day which is "off season" in this beach town. No space at the counter. Waitress who I later learned is the owner says at least 20 minute wait. I remember the sign's promise. 30 minutes later with an apology, sat at the counter, curt but friendly same waitress who I later find out is the owner. Ordered the White Omlette (filled with chicken sausage, spinach and cheese)and bottomless coffee and a giant blueberry muffin (because I didn't eat the night before). If you read this far, it WAS ABSOLUTELY worth the wait. The coffee was outstanding, I bought a bag to tag home. The omelette although look dried because of the slight crispiness of the egg white was soft and oozing of delicious cheese, sausage and spinach. That simple! The muffin I wolfed down in the first 5 minutes and I made no apologies about it. Yes! It was worth the wait and I will gladly go to Hull again and eat at Toast again. I hardly ever review on Yelp, but I just had THE WORST customer service experience of my life, and feel like this business deserves to be shut down. I went to breakfast with my children, and things seemed ok at first. We ordered our food, and it was a bit busy, not crazy, but enough so I was ok waiting a bit longer than normal. However, after about 20 min of waiting, I decided to just check in with the server and ask when our food might be out. She very rudely said something like " you just saw me bring those other peoples food out, so you know it's gonna be soon. You're gonna have to wait a little longer" and then walked away. My kids and I just sat there she'll-shocked for a minute. THEN, she came by the table and reiterated her rude response-totally unprovoked. After that, we can literally hear her talking trash about us to the other servers!! Still don't have food. Probably half an hour after we ordered, the food comes out. It was fine. Nothing great, but fine. I finally had enough, and decide to call the manager over. The MANAGER (who I believe is the owner) tells me that she saw the whole thing and the server was fine, that they are busy and I just need to "get over it". While I was speaking to the manager, my daughter sees the server MOCKING ME behind her and says so! Again, the manager rolls her eyes and walks away. I was in tears when we left. I usually tip well over 20 percent regardless of service when we go out because I served tables for many years and know how it is. For the first time, though, I wrote a big zero on the tip line. I cannot tell you how terribly they treated us, and for absolutely no reason. Do not ever go here. These people do not deserve any business. read more

This was the first breakfast place we ate at when we moved to town. It's a little pricey but they have really good food and good service.

The food was very good, the service was friendly busy and happy to accommodate our needs. There was a small wait but that was during the End of Summer Festival. I am now a frequent visitor and bring others with me to experience what they have to offer and that is "A great view of the ocean and fantastic food served with a Northerner attitude. Somebody always needs something from someone no matter what side of the counter we all sit on. So lets all try and be patient. The place is must be doing something right as it's always full of customers eating , having coffee, reading the paper at the counter or waiting for a table. It's all Good I would recommend but if your in a rush leave yourself with pleanty of time for it is busy . again that's a good thing! read more
