My Little Girl and I used to come here for breakfast on the occasional Saturday, but won't do so again. Arrived at Toast Saturday AM, and were directed to the counter. I switched two adjacent chairs at the counter so that my Little Girl could have a cushioned seat rather than a wooden one, and saw a waitress appear bothered that I was doing so. Odd. Four minutes later, that same waitress started talking exasperatedly to a busgirl, whose eyes kept flickering up at me as they talked. I walked down and asked the waitress if she were complaining about me, and if so, what I had done something to offend her. She explained that she really doesn't like it when customers switch the chairs and wanted to know how I knew she was complaining about us. I considered explaining why I had Moved Two Chairs Around, but then realized that was ridiculous, and instead just said that we had come there to have a good breakfast and start our weekend off right, not realizing that they didn't want us there. She said that we weren't unwelcome and that it wasn't a Big Deal, but had no answer when I asked her if it weren't a Big Deal, then why was she complaining about us, and worse, why she was complaining about us right in front of us. We opted to leave. Point of irony: Toast has two signs up, one of which reads, "No whining," and another which alleges they won't tolerate rudeness from customers. Boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try for brunch except we didn't actually get to sit down and try. This review is for the service we received. This was a tiny place and not at all appealing. It was a bit crowded and there was a wait, which we expected for a Sunday morning. We went in to put our name down. An older lady took his name and gave us an wait estimate of 30 mins. We decided to waste time by checking out the nearby shops and walk along the beach, all of which took us about 15 mins. When we got back in to check on our table we were met by the same lady. She was downright rude and unapologetic about giving up our table and putting the blame on us for not being there when she supposedly called our name and said she will put us down again. *Beware of rude owner* The place is called "Toast". You think they might have awesome toasted bread. Its toast people. Put bread in a toaster, right? I guess it is more difficult than that since mine was burnt on the outside and soggy inside. The linguica omelet had a few pieces of kielbasa (not linguica) in it and the rest was just dried scrambled egg with some cheese. The hash browns are just shredded potato. Nothing to write home about and it took a long time for the meals to come out. The coffee was good though and the rest of the servers seemed great. Overall, the food was below average, but the entire experience was made unpleasant thanks to the constant nagging from the MISERABLE owner talking down to employees and customers loudly throughout the visit. I've been here many times and here's another place I find difficult to rate. I can't give 3 stars (A-OK), so I rated it "Meh. I've experienced better." If there was a rating for 2.5 stars, I would have chosen that. The problem with the place is it's inconsistent. When they want to be good, they are excellent, but they aren't committed to serving excellent food. For example, when the waffles are cooked to order for you, it's excellent. But sometimes you'll get bad tasting waffles (soggy and not crispy at all) . . . I imagine they had left over waffles from the previous day which they frozed and de-frosted to serve the next day or two. Well, they saved money by not throwing it out, but it just damages their reputation, so during the week be careful on what you order. I am sure during the busy weekends that wouldn't happen. The food can be 5 stars which keeps me coming back despite their problems (more on that later). Burnt Toast is great! Their hash browns are great too, not too salty and just enough grease/butter. The secret is not to deep fry it like at McDonald's so they do take the time to make good food when they want to. And it's one of the few places around Boston that serves real maple syrup. Who wants to eat bad-for-you calorie laden pancakes or French toast with gross corn syrup instead of delicious maple syrup?? So the food can be 4 or 5 stars, or it can be a 1-2 stars. If you come during the weekend you should be all right. Now, you say I should have complained about my waffles? Well, if you see the owner's body language and facial expressions you know you'll get no where with that, and it wouldn't be worth discussing. Every time I go there, she's grumpy, under stress, and impatient. The first time I went to Toast I got the hint . . . with "no substitutions" and $1 charge for sharing food on the menu along with her posted "rules". It's hard to avoid her as she's also the hostess, but I just try stay out of her way, and talk to the wait staff if I need something. The wait staff service is very good. Side Note: Naturally, I also read reviews besides writing them, and laughed out loud that other reviews on tripadvisor.ca and on another site (can't recall) had reviews that said the owner is rude. Have heard about Toast a couple of times from the locals, I live in Hull. Had friends visiting from out of town and thought we would go for breakfast. Not a friendly vibe, but proceeded to sit. The food was good breakfast food, but certainly not worth the attitude. When we finished our meal (slow service), I took the check since I was treating and presented a $100 bill. The server explained she couldn't break it and I informed her that I had nothing smaller. The manager (or owner) rudely came over and said they didn't have change, which I assumed was not true, since the place was crowded. They servers must get their own bank in the morning. Anyway, my guests covered the bill, since I left my cards home. Go to Stars in Hingham, great brunch and nice folks. After all, we're talking about eggs. read more

Food is ok. I mean it's breakfast. Not that challenging of a task. Hash and eggs should not take 45 minutes when the place was one third empty. The staff made us feel very unwelcome. They never once said a kind word even though my wife and I were very polite on every single request. I will list them. Our order. May we please have water. Our bill please. Oh yes in full disclosure we told them up front that we had a Groupon coupon. We still tipped 20% so we can tell them in our own way that they really are a bunch of idiots. I really wish that I could have given this place a better rating but I was so disappointed with the way that my family was treated that I don't even want to give them 1 star. went for a late breakfast earlier today with my family (mom, dad, sister, brother in law, niece, and my 14 month old son). We were quite a large party and got seated RIGHT away, got our order taken right away AND got our drinks RIGHT away. However, our order wasn't put in for probably 20 minutes after we got there and we sat waiting for our food for almost an hour. Now normally this wouldn't really be a problem but we had a baby with us. We FINALLY got our food and as we were sitting eating, my 14 MONTH OLD son started to become quite vocal and frustrated over a coffee cup that he couldn't have. The manager decided to come over and VERY RUDELY tell us that EVERYONE in the restaurant had complained to her about my sons behavior and then proceeds to tell me to take him outside... then she sets down the check, though NOONE at our table was NEAR done eating. How can ANYONE expect a 14 month old to sit for OVER an hour and not get bored or frustrated, it doesn't matter HOW many things you have to distract or occupy them, sitting for that long at 14 months old is practically UNHEARD of! Can you REALLY be THAT ignorant of a person? I have taken my son out to plenty of restaurants and USUALLY when they see someone come in with a baby they make it a point to put in the order faster and move the table along more quickly as to cater to the need of the child. I am utterly disgusted with the way my family and I were treated and needless to say I will NEVER be returning to this restaurant. I would recommend the S&S in Inman Square in Cambridge over this place ANY day! Their food is healthier and better prepared along with their menu having WAY more options and they are open for dinner as well but serve breakfast ALL day. I like to try new breakfast places and it was time to take a trip to Hull. The view is gorgeous as you are smack dab right on the water. I arrived and my friend was a little tardy, so I was waiting with two people for my table. The waitress assumed we were all together and started seating the three of us. I had to speak up and say, no I am not with them (sorry), I am waiting for a friend. She sat me at another table but still with no communication or smile. I ordered the eggs benedict and she had the scrambled burrito. I liked that I got my coffee in addition to those little mini mugs for additional coffee. My eggs benedict was good, but the sauce neededed a little more kick to it. I would go back to try the creme brulee french toast and enjoy the view, but won't be holding my breath for a smile or friendly hello from the staff. read more

Unable to manage a small crowd very cluttered and the waitress was short tempered it cost me 17 dollars for 3 coffees and two muffins and on the weekends they cannot accommodate a take out order. I truly wonder why they are in business and how they still are in business. On a positive note the god o the tables looked good but you will never see me go there again!! I'm surprised by all of the over-the-top complaints about the service and owner. Okay, she seemed kind of surly, but she was polite to everyone who was there and was friendly with the locals. Regardless, she was manning the bar. The lady who served us was very sweet and prompt. The food was great! I had the white omelet with hash browns and multigrain toast. The omelet was huge and yummy. The hash browns were greasy, but very good (I don't mind greasy hash browns). Overall a great experience. They were very busy and I can see why. We got our food in about 10 minutes, regardless. The food is mediocre at best. The hashbrowns were undercooked and underseasoned. The waffle is an awful deal at $6 and all you get is a single small waffle like the free ones offered at hotels. I nearly never post reviews, but this past visit deserved one. Food was fine, but the owner was unbelievably unfriendly. She was clearly annoyed by a request for different table (the restaurant was literally empty when we arrived at 6am on a weekday), and I had to ask three times for a refill on coffee. She told us very rude that it was only for parties of 4. Then she seats us at a table for a party of 4. The food is nothing to write home about and it is super dirty. My husband and I were at Nantasket beach early today (6:45AM) and after walking the beach we were looking for a place to have breakfast. We stopped in a convenience store to ask if there were any places in the area for breakfast, and they recommended"Toast". It was around 8AM on a Sunday by then, so it was a little busy, with limited indoor seating due to the coronavirus. We waited 15-20 minutes and then were asked if we minded counter seats (we did not mind). Extensive menu for it being a smallish location. I had the 3 egg omelette, home fries and english muffin (omellete was huge, hot, and delicious). My husband had a bagel sandwich and shared my large breakfast. It was nice and cool inside, which was delightful (in fact if you sit at the end of the counter you may find it "too cool" with an A/C unit nearby). Owner was pleasant, courteous, checked on how everything was after we tried it, offered multiple refills on coffee. Overall we were very happy with the experience and will probably go there again next time we're at the beach. read more

Don't go here, if you are lucky enough to get seated without waiting, it all goes down hill from there. It took 20 minutes to take our order and another 10 minutes to bring our drinks. I ordered a two egg omelet cooked light, specified," not brown" with home fries and toast, seemingly easy. After waiting an hour and twenty minutes,watching others seated after us,who had extensive orders,getting served ahead of us. It came out looking like more then a 3 egg omelet, overcooked and brown! The home fries weren't cooked. My husbands sausage and home fries were also cold and his pancakes tasted like they came from a card board box. This is a great little place! Food and service are great. The tough part can be parking, which is limited during the summer season. It's almost always super busy, so be prepared to wait many times. Solid choice for brunch if you've got time. Our party of four dined in the off-season and waited about three minutes for a table to open up. Waitstaff/hostess were pleasant, coffee cups were kept full. Brunch was delicious. Docked a star for the amount of time it took for our food to come out (30 minutes for brunch food). The place wasn't THAT busy. It would also be nice to have a bloody mary, but since they have only a beer/wine license, mimosas are the only possibility. I compared my experience to Stars in Hingham. This is our FAVORITE breakfast restaurant! We go at least 2 times/week. The restaurant is immaculately clean and smells like fresh toast and yummy coffee. Speaking of coffee, their coffee is THE BEST EVER! I don't really like coffee, but I find myself thinking of Toast's coffee during the day! The food is fresh - a must for me. The omelettes are huge. The french toast is yummy. I've had their multi-grain pancakes, french toast (you can get it in multi-grain bread if you want), eggs and omelettes and they're all awesome. The wait staff is the best I have ever seen. They are always very pleasant and friendly and calm under pressure. And, believe me, weekends can be extremely busy. The one down side is it can be a wait for your food. That is because the owner is the cook and he has only one assistant. Each meal is lovingly prepared and it is always worth the wait. Enjoy the atmosphere! Lunches there are also good. Homemade soups, crisp, fresh salads and great sweet potatoe fries. Same great service! read more

Love the food, great atmosphere, but the owner is super rude. Was there for breakfast today, have been there many times and it's always busy which is to be expected. Was sitting at the counter and had already put in our order with the owner. She was standing behind the counter, eating, having a conversation with her friend, also a patron. We'd been waiting 25-30 minutes after putting in our order when she brought her friend their breakfast. My father politely asked when our breakfast might be out and her response was a curt "it's coming out, it's only been 15 minutes". She brought our food a few minutes later and just set it there without a word and went back to her conversation with her friend. When we left a few other employees wished us a good day and thanked us for coming but she just continued on her personal conversation. As I previously stated, the food is fabulous and the atmosphere is great, the majority of the staff is very friendly but the owner should take a tip on customer service from her staff. I might also mention I've heard from several other people that they've also had less than pleasant interactions with the owner as well. read more

We left a $100 bill and said we were all set. Well she brought back the change, when we were getting our coats on the waitress came over and asked "was your service not good ?" We had no idea what she was talking about. So it would seem my tip was not big enough. Really, I was so upset I called from the car and spoke to the manager. Toast is an amazing restaurant with amazing food. the wait can be a little long, but you have to realize that it is only one chef and a sous chef in the back. all these negative reviews seem like they're coming from people that are naturally jaded. you're mad because they dont like cellphones in the restaurant? it's a very small place that gets bad cell reception, there's nothing worse than having someone next to your table talking so loud that everyone can hear. you don't like the "passive aggressive" signs? get a f***ing grip, you're being ridiculous. would you go to the 99 and complain about all the tacky stuff they have on the walls? no, relax. the wait staff was mean to you? honestly, you probably deserved it. treat them with decency and they'll give it right back to you. disregard the sign saying "please dont seat yourself" and you will be told to wait until a seat is ready. there's a plague throughout restaurant goers lately, you all feel so entitled. these restaurant workers are people, and they're doing the best they can. don't try to make them out as villains just because you didnt like your eggs, or you had to wait a little longer than expected. if you present your problem to the staff and treat them with dignity while doing so, they will be more than willing to go the distance to help you have a great meal. if you're the type of person that gets PISSED over having to wait a little longer for some great food, or gets PISSED over being asked to step outside to take your phone call, or you're the type of person that gets PISSED at wait staff in general, this is NOT the restaurant for you. you dont deserve to have what toast offers. everyone else, try it out! i go every single weekend! the food is prepared with passion and an attention to detail for every plate.
