I have lived in the Kearny Mesa area for over 10years. I saw an offer for free membership. I decided to inquire. Arrived approximately around 1030a ish 6/5/24. I was initially inquiring with a delightful, professional, energetic young female. I requested more info she removed herself to another area to retrieve the info. Another representative of Toby Wells approached the desk with a container in his hands. Slammed it down on the desk, opened the box, slammed the container down. With never acknowledging my presents. When she returned and I inquired about the information he respond with a loud indirect tone. I asked another he said its on the paper I was given. Moreso trying to "shoo" my off. I am over 55, disabled & military affiliated. With all these this place will not get my presence ever again!! Sadly I live close. With the unprofessional attitude of the young man maybe that's the reason I never stopped by. read more

Love the YMCA!! Got a membership with my sister for $60/month for both of us and unlimited classes (since I'm not very good working out solo). They have schedules up for every month and have plenty of classes as well as a big variety of classes from yoga to TRX for both early and late times during the day. For the rest of the gym, Mon-Thur is from 5AM-10PM, Fri 5AM-9PM, and Sat-Sun 7AM-7PM. The instructors are all very friendly and so motivating. There was seriously one instructor who was pregnant and due to give birth the next day who was KICKING MY BUTT in a class. Ego was damaged a little but dang did my body feel good! :) Parking is a bit tricky because there's one way to enter and one way to exit. They have a huge parking lot on the other side of the "park" as well as right next to the gym. I have never really had a problem with finding parking close to the gym. They also offer day care and gymnastics but I'm not sure on the details on that. One thing I would LOVE for Toby Wells to get is a little snack bar or area for smoothies or even snacks. They have a vending machine though. They also have an indoor pool but I have yet to take an aquatic class but it's on the to do list! OH yeah, AND with this membership, you can go to 3 different locations-Toby Wells, Mission Valley, and Copley Price. I haven't been to Copley Price but Mission Valley is also a very nice location (might be the main location since it's bigger). So no excuses to miss out on working out! Maybe some shopping therapy after a good work out to reward yourself at Fashion Valley. Hope to see you there! :) read more

Been coming here for 7 weeks now and I enjoy this location. The equipment is always working, and the staff is very friendly. I'm always greeted entering and leaving this YMCA. Parking is good, and the vibe of this place is good. Dalia is great, her classes are very good. They also have a nice park and playground for the kids. The only thing they need to improve on is the AC temps, some days its cold and on other days its hot! read more

They have a nice facility here with multiple rooms for group exercises, a huge gymnasium for gymnastics, a room with weights and cardio machines, and a pool. I took a Zumba class here and didn't feel like I sweat much. I need my big butt to be kicked small. Help me get a skinny biotech's(-e) body! read more

Prior to joining the cult that is 24hr (hey, it's convenient!) I was a member of YMCA and although this location was a bit of a drive for me it was always worth it! Friendly staff, great group fitness classes, and a clean facility made this a great location. Plus they offer many great programs for families with children, I know my future tikes will be signed up for gymnastics amongst the other programs offered here. Back to the gym though...There was never a wait for machines, even during peak times! Parking was a bit tricky but there is an overflow lot across the street which made parking a breeze, so don't complain because the extra feet to walk to the gym is good for you and just extra exercise! They offer towels to use while working out, a nice perk! read more

Why oh why did it take me so long to join the YMCA??? I love this gym and this location. Great kids events, great classes, great summer camps, great machines, very clean, nice pool, awesome fields. The only downside is parking can be a bit of a pain. Only one way in and one way out and they are not the same. Overflow parking can be found across the street. Its and lot for some industrial complex that is always empty. I also love that membership here gets you into the Mission Valley and Friars Road Y's too. Depending on where I am, I can stop in to the closest location and get a quick workout in. read more

These guys are great! Yeah, the gym is a smaller than 24 hour fitness, but the staff are way cooler. I'm visiting from out of town, and after i signed the waiver, my gym session tonight was free, and i get another because i get two guest passes before i even need to pay for a daypass when i'm in town. Extremely disappointed in this place! I signed my kids up for swim lessons and they sent me a confirmation email. I also received an email from Sierra dole with some paperwork to fill out before the lessons started. Then I show up to swim lessons and they tell me I'm on the waitlist, the lessons are full and my son won't be able to join the class. It was never in the subject line of the original confirmation email that we were on a wait list, it was hidden in the context of the email. I had to take my very upset children out of this place who could not understand why we could not go to swim lessons. You should have better communicated that we were on a waitlist! read more

I like to come to Toby Wells when I want to escape the commercial feel of the Mission Valley Y. It is a smaller gym, but it's quite personal and charming. It has everything you need - an indoor pool, workout room, nice equipment, multiple rooms/sessions for yoga, zumba, pilates, etc... The showers are NICER than Mission Valley. Although it is a smaller facility, they have triple the amount of shower room space compared to the one on Friars. People are much nicer, and the atmosphere isn't has busy and hurried as the sister location. read more

YMCA gyms don't play music, that's too bad. Gyms are more fun with music, not everyone wears headphones. Why silence? everyone is there to practice activities and exercise and brighten the day, music brightens the environment, and there are elderly people, for example, who do not use headphones, and work out in a sadness that only, there should be music to brighten the environment. read more

I love this YMCA. We were members at the Mission Valley first and we visit Toby Wells one day to try it out. What I love about it is their special programs that they have for the kids. The Halloween Fright Fest was a blast and all of these other programs are amazing. We are moving closer to this Y than Mission Valley, so i'm excited to see how we like it once we are regulars. read more

I've been coming to this location for 5 months now honestly, I don't have any complaints. Well, one. The gym gets packed quickly. But other than that, the staff here are extremely nice. The child watch is fantastic and they know me and my kids by name and actually care. The place is really clean and it's overall a great location. I come here, normally, 6/7 days a week. Lately a little less. But parking is almost always great. I've never parked in overflow parking. My kids love it and so do I. read more

I love coming to Toby Wells. I have never had a problem with childcare. They love my son so much. They do have certain policies like they won't wipe your kid so you have to stop your workout and go help your child, but that is reasonable. The facility is always clean. One downfall is parking in the main lot. They do have overflow parking at National University which is behind the soccer field. The playground here is huge and my son really enjoys it. The weight room can get a little packed but that's like every gym. I love the frequent Y'er program. It motivates me to go more often and puts you in the running for a free month! The cardio room is awesome. The equipment is up to date. There's a TV to each cardio machine. Enough towels around, etc. etc. What more can a girl ask for?! I would love to say that this is my FAVORITE YMCA, but I can't for these reasons: (1) It gets super crowded at peak times. (1A) When it is crowded at peak times, there is no parking (2) There's a lot of kids running around here. I'm not saying that the kids should go! No, not at all, the kids are cute! AND THEY'RE BEING ACTIVE! But... (2A) When there are kids, that means that there are parents. And those parents...well they drive big ass SUVs/Vans... Add reason (1A) and (2A) together to get my ultimate reason for this location being my favorite. HORRIBLE PARKING SITUATIONS! I cannot tell you how many times I've almost got into an accident because: (A) The parents in those big ass SUVs/Vans are in a hurry to get home and cannot see, (B) The big ass SUVs/Vans create such a horrible blind spot for everyone and (C) those big ass SUVs/Vans still try to make their way into the TINNIE-EST, TINIEST parking spots and make it a hassle for everyone around them! I hate going to the gym. Just absolutely hate it. But I'm 40 and I know that the gym is a necessary evil if I want to continue to lead a lifestyle of travel and adventure. (LOL) So back story - I used to go to Curves but their hours sucked and the whole atmosphere just drove me to drink after a couple of years. My sister has been going here for years and loves it but she's one of those crazy gym people, so I was not convinced. But they were having their semi-annual no sign up fee special, so I joined. And surprisingly, even though I hate every moment of every day that I am here, I know that I made the right choice to join the Y. The cardio machines are all super nice and new and I love that you can sign up for a Precor account and it tracks all sorts of stats for you. TVs on the machines are definitely a bonus. The weight equipment is on a circuit - there is a set of beginner machines in addition the ones the hardcore enthusiasts seem to use. I haven't ventured into taking any classes yet, but they are plentiful and they seem to have the same mellow vibe as the main training room. Definitely take advantage of free services, like having a trainer go through the circuit to show you how to use the machines. It will really help you to build a routine that is right for you and your fitness level (now and where you want to be....) So I guess this is pretty much a RAH RAH, this gym is rad review. Don't get me wrong, I still hate the gym. I am just able to deal with it because the Y works for me. read more

I was a die hard 24 Hour Fitness person...back when I was like 22 years old. Now a mother of three kids and a lot older than 22, I am not so into trying to work off this pregnancy blubber while next to some super fit perky, youngin' while she's being hit on by some beef cake. YMCA gym, not like that. Don't get me wrong...there's definitely a young crowd here, but it's just a different vibe. Families, military, singles, couples, senior citizens, handicap. Plus they have free kid watching if you have a family membership. And we're talking a really great place for your kids to hangout while you get your workout on, offering snacks, coloring worksheets and creative play (24 hr fitness, not happening). And after you workout, swim or take a class...you can take your kids to the playground which is on grounds, or take a short walk to Robeks and pick up a smoothie. It's all good. Why not a 5 star rating... sometimes it can get packed if you so happen to come by when classes or camp time is transitioning. Not that it's super annoying or much of a problem, but I do try to avoid going to the gym during those times. read more

This is a bad Y to go to if you hate kids. There is a gymnastics program here that usually has 87 underlings running thru the halls on a regular basis. If that doesn't bother you, then this Y stands out from others. First, until the Mission Valley Y opens up their spin class, this is the only branch that offers one. The also offer a number of aerobics classes, pilates classes and mixed yoga. There's also a very popular basketball court here. I like coming here for the classes. When I want cardio I go to the Mission Valley branch. read more

This YMCA is definitely my favorite one (my membership also works at the Friars location and the scary-ass Mind/Body annex - or, as I call it, the "exposed insulation annex" - at the Hazard Center) because it's nice and clean with modern machines and tvs attached to every cardio machine. Sometimes parking can be a pain, but there is an overflow lot across the street at the county building, and seriously, if you're there to work out, what is walking an extra 50 feet going to hurt? The classes are a little hit-and-miss (depends on the instructor), but I think that's probably the case anywhere. I will say that I *love* the Zumba class with Fleeta, and am super-excited that they moved from the tiny studio where I couldn't flail my arms without hitting someone to the gymnasium, which is much more comfortable (sorry basketball dudes!) Lastly, the costs of the membership go towards a good cause! The YMCA does wonderful things for families and kids, particularly underprivileged ones. So think about it: do you want to give your money to corporate douches, or needy kids???? (end guilt trip.) read more

This place has changed my life. It is a wonderful facility both inside and out. And because of the fact that they have amazing daycare for up to two hours while you work out I am able to have mommy time and stay healthy at the same time. They have a pool which is indoor but the ceiling opens up when the weather is nice which is almost always because we live in San Diego :-) It is clean, friendly, and welcoming. They have lockers for daily use that you can set your own combination with, they have programs such as swimming and gymnastics for little kids. They have classes like yoga and Pilates etc. as well as every machine you could probably imagine. I can't say enough good things about the YMCA here at Toby Wells. So happy I am able to be a member and enjoy all of the awesomeness! read more

This is just a review of the indoor soccer at the YMCA. The refs are good and keep the game under control. The players have all been nice so far. I only have two complaints: the scoreboard is broken so you don't know how much time is left for some of the time, and there are leaves all over the field that are very slippery. They should clean the leaves up, someone will get hurt. read more

Great facility with excellent vinyasa yoga classes taught by morrow on Mondays and Fridays. Parking is always an issue. The childcare is okay, but there is often a long wait to drop your kid off, which makes attending classes difficult. The on site preschool and gymnastics program seem to clog everything up. My son comes home with a runny nose everytime I take him. Maybe they need to be stricter about allowing sick children in the kids place... read more

I recently joined because they waved the initiation fee (which was awesome) and i was getting tired for not having a gym. Here is my experience during the month that I have been a member: Pros: It is reasonable priced, free 2 hour childcare with family membership, lots of group classes, tv's on cardio equipment, indoor pool, it is never packed (like 24 hr fitness) if you sign up for this location you also have access to the Y at Friar's road and the one downtown. Finally, the bootcamp and the sport drills classes are amazing!!!!!!! the best kick butt workouts i have ever had at a gym. oh there are no contracts so you can quit your membership by just giving the a 15 day notice Cons: the bootcamp and the sports drill classes are in the morning, which is not convinient for somebody like me who works during the day. In the afternoon the only classes they offer are "easy" classes, like step, or zumba...not real workout for somebody in good shape. I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD ADD MORE TOUGH CLASSES IN THE AFTERNOON PLEASE!!!! also there are always lots of kids, very family oriented, so if you don;t like that it might be a problem. the locker rooms remind me to my highschool locker rooms, minimum amenities. overall I am happy with my investment, but I will get bored soon if they don't add more difficult classes, after all i am paying to get fit read more

Love this ymca! I take my toddlers to the open gymnastics and they have an absolute blast. The facility is really nice. Equipment seems relatively new and the work our classes are great. I only use the weight room, so that is what my review is focused on. There's a ton of cardio equipment if the cardio bunny thing is your jam. Lot of crossfitters here having seizures while doing "pullups" and generally flailing about, so the wait for a squat rack is long regardless of the time of day you go as there are only two. (Even if you go at 1 PM on a tuesday, they're typically taken, for example) They do have bumper plates for deadlifts, so that's pretty neato, and chalk seems to be accepted. Long and short of it, if you just want a treadmill and somewhere to do leg curls, it's great. If you're more of a seasoned lifter, there's not enough equipment. read more

Here lies Susie, who is dead after just one whirl at Kathy's "Turbo Kick" class. Toby Wells is a top notch gym, super new & clean and just huge with all kinds of facilities from a spinning room (with classes throughout the day) to gymnastics, day care, basketball courts, etc. It's located right off the Balboa Ave exit on the 15, and has all new equipment & super-friendly staff, and the class I took was AWESOME. Kathy was super funny & high-energy, took the time to learn everyone's names, and just made me want to be stronger as we rolled through an hour of fast-paced choreographed kicking, jumping, punching and (sort of) yelling "PAR-TAY" - don't ask. I was beat, but that's all the more reason to come back. I'll be back to check out the pool too. Did somebody say 'water slide'? read more

(This review is of the Pool Facility only.) I had a great group experience with "Mitchell" last Saturday, Feb.18. This YMCA doesn't book pool parties, so I figured I'd just invite a couple kids and their parents for my daughter's birthday (during Open Swim). I had stopped by several days before and spoke to Mitchell about an upcoming celebration at the pool, and luckily he was there on that Saturday when I showed up with my big group. Mitchell was friendly and organized. We counted all the swimmers in our group (non-members: $5.00/adults and $1.50/kids) and before I paid, he walked us in and make sure everything was square with the lifeguard on duty, letting the lifeguard know that I was there with a big group and if he had any questions or concerns to please let me know. Mitchell explained to me that their rule for the pool is 25swimmers per Lifeguard, and that if there were more people, then we'd have to rotate swimmers. I was fine with that. When our group of kids/adults were settled and swimming, I gave Mitchell my card and he took care of my tab so that I didn't have to leave the pool area (and my guests). He was very helpful throughout the process and I couldn't have had a better 'host.' Thank you, Mitchell! The pool is heated, indoor and very clean. It starts at 3.5ft on both ends and is 5ft in the middle. For those who need it, there are Coast Guard approved life-jackets available for kids. The changing facilites are clean and uncrowded. Although we came on a Saturday to celebrate my daughter's birthday, we usually come here on Sundays when there is practically nobody at the pool. This is our Spot after church. ;) Lots of parking. Friendly people at the front desk. Large, clean pool. (Beats "Boomers" ANY day; see my review of that place.) We'll keep coming back to swim at Toby Wells YMCA. read more

I'm a big fan of the Y. This is my first time going to Toby Wells. I need to look around more, check it out, but my wife & I took a class today with Nikki & it was awesome. My wife goes way more than I do, & she thought it was a good workout. (which means it really kicked my butt) My one and only complaint (and it's a dumb one) is that all the water fountains are super low. I felt like I was doing yet another squat just to get a drink & after working out, it was hard to do. I told you it was dumb. Thank you to the YMCA for great programs & classes for our family. I have two toddlers and really wanna like the Toby Wells Y. First off, parking sucks - anytime. Pool rules and teenager Lifeguard are enjoying. Compliments to another Yelp reviewer that also noticed the constantly nagging and condescending teenager lifeguard and staff. And forget the swim classes for toddlers unless you want to see your kid hold on to a plastic pol-structure for 70% of the time while the teacher is taking turns one child at a time. One last but very important thing. Keep a very close eye on your toddler and be ready to jump in the pool. I seen more then once where the teacher was teaching one-on-one while one of the children hanging on to the pol structure looses his footing and slowly going under. This pool layout and design is just bad for a family YMCA. The Waterslide is closed most of time. The outside Playground is pretty good and is open to the Public. read more

I love the YMCA! Great variety of equipment, so many classes you can take, which are included with your membership +++++. Also lots of space. For seasoned lifters, obviously, you aren't going to find EVERYTHING you want. You should probably visit a gym that caters more to lifting purposes if that's what you're in search of! I do think the YMCA is fair though, it's a happy medium. Lots of cardio machines. Also when classes aren't in session, you can use those enormous rooms for your own workout! I don't have kids, but the Y does have lots of activities for them it seems like. The only complaints I have are that this gym needs another stair master. Only one, and it kinda sucks. Also wish there was a sauna or steam room of some sort? But all in all, great prices for what you're getting at this gym. read more

Very family oriented and great facilities. They have free two hour child care while you workout. The weight/cardio room is awesome. All the cardio equipment have individual tv screens with cable. They have a full size basketball court, full size gym floor, full size pool. There is a park with a great playground and soccer field. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The members are family oriented and appear to be more interested in working out then looking hot and meeting other singles. Toby Wells is on the old Missle Park for General Dynamics families when General Dynamics/Convair occupied this land. The exisitng Toby Wells park is all that remains of Missle Park. PS, the Atlas rocket that stood here is now out at Gillespie Field in El Cajon. read more

This is my place!!! I like this facility. It's big and everything is pretty nice. Heck, when I was a kid growing up in a small town, the Y was always kind of old, dirty and smelly. The Ys here in SD are pretty nice! If you go at certain times, you will be absolutely ENGULFED in children. I'm saying, you will hardly be able to walk down the hallway. This can be annoying, but Hey, it's the Y. What do you expect? At least they aren't in the parking lot, spray painting your car. Speaking of the parking lot -- good luck trying to find parking right after 5pm. I've spent many minutes circling the lot before. Annoying, but whatevs. They have a good schedule of workouts every day of the week. It took me a while to find the ones that I liked and the ones I didn't. I've finally found my favorite classes that fit what I want. There's everything from zumba (hated it) to tough boot camp (love it, but suck at it) and lots of options for yoga. Over time, you will figure out which instructors you like. I think the fitness room with all the machines is pretty good, and really big. Sorry I'm not good with the fitness terminology. I mean, like, treadmills and stuff. The machines all have their own TV and ipod inputs, which is cool. I'm impressed by how many machines there are. $40/month. read more

I came here for gymnastics, and the trainers are very good. I also stopped in to watch the karate sessions - if you're interested in karate, their program looks pretty well made. Everything here looks great! Parking was an annoying experience though. If I ever decide to go healthy, I might just come here again. =) read more

This is such a wonderful gym! I actually prefer to go around 7am on weekdays and find the gym is pretty empty with my choice of any cardio machine I want. The machines are up-to-date, the staff is friendly. The locker room is a little smaller than I prefer, however, it only gets packed after 5:30pm on weekdays. I prefer this gym to the Mission Valley YMCA because it is smaller but has less people at it so even when it's busy, it's a pleasant gym to be in. read more

Beautiful facilities and location! We took swim lessons for our daughter who is four years old and didn't feel like we got our money's worth. For one, the kids in the class were very distracting and the classes were too short. For a 30 minute class they only really swam for about 7 minutes. We decided not to return because the teachers were bad but we had a better experience with one on one swimming through Kick n Swim that was eight classes for two weeks consistently. I also play indoor through the adult league and I have to say it is well organized and the refs are nice. read more

We are not members of the YMCA, but I do bring my 2.5 year old daughter here for open gym on Friday mornings. she loves it. They play a good kids music mix, and they basically get the run of the whole place. My 8 month old and I just chill. The hour goes by fast but she burns out and has a blast.
