The food was incredible. The bulgogi in the hot stone was especially delicious. It comes out practically boiling, as you can see in the video, so it will absolutely burn your mouth if you're not careful. My mouth was sore for a few hours afterward, but honestly, it was worth it. The major downside is the ventilation. The restaurant was extremely smoky, and both my daughter and I were coughing nonstop after leaving and continued coughing for almost 24 hours. There doesn't seem to be enough ventilation or air purification for all the cooking smoke. I would genuinely love to become a regular because the food is that good, but the air quality makes it difficult to come back. Ambiance is simple and relax with lots of tables to sit. It is usually packed, but we came on a Thursday at noon and we were seated super fast. We ordered the Hot Stone Plate Seafood, Bul GO Gi and a Chef's Special. Each plate was delicious, super tasty and you get an egg to be cooked, one egg per plate. The banchan dishes were good but wish they gave us more. Our food came out pretty quickly. We enjoyed the seafood combo and the dumpling tofu soups. The spice levels were good too. Ordered a medium and it wasn't too spicy or too bland for me. I like the egg to crack into my tofu soup too. Parking lot is tight and there is never enough spots for all the restaurants in the plaza. This is our go-to San Diego spot for soondubu (soft tofu soup) cravings, even though the parking lot is quite cramped. While the menu is straightforward, our favorite is the seafood special tofu. The broth arrives piping hot with a good variety of ingredients and a raw egg on the side to crack in yourself. You also have the choice between white or purple grain rice. The seafood fried rice is deceptively good. It's well-seasoned with crispy bits of rice and a generous helping of shrimp and mini scallops (though the addition of lima beans is a interesting). The banchan side dishes are solid and refillable, and the two unisex bathrooms are well-maintained. One unique thing to expect: they often bring the check well before you are finished. The absolute BEST soup on a cold day (and any other, honestly). We always get the vegetarian boiled tofu soup and burn our mouths every time because we can't wait for it to cool down. It's super flavorful and full of mushrooms, cabbage, and tofu. The bonchon is also delicious. I like to add the fish cakes and cabbage kimchi to the soup. The cucumbers and radish are my favorites. We were a party of two and ordered (1) Galbi & Chef Special combo and (2) a Bulgogi boiled tofu. We wanted galbi to eat with our soup, and enjoyed the food. I will said the beef in the bulgogi soup was not my favorite, but I the galbi was more flavorful and tender. So their menu changed a while ago, now, all of the combos include this chef's special (seafood based proteins), very sad If you are allergic to seafood. If you decide to change it for another soup? Which, by the way, is the same price or less then the chef's special. You get the joy of paying 2 dollars more for your soup, kind of ghetto, it irritates me. But thats okay, why, you ask? Kinda sad this place used to be awesome the tofu soup was watery no flavor really. Service was not great the two workers today seem very unhappy. The placed smelt bad and smokey especially after the rice bowls came out l think there isn't proper ventilation. My friend with a new born had to leave early due to burnt smell. The sides were not great too fish cakes dry now. The bulgogi bowl tasted burnt and biter I used to love these they don't much veggies in it. This is probably the best jjigae I've tried in San Diego!! I recently went with friends on a weekday. There was no wait; we were immediately seated. That being said, we did come a little early for dinner, and the place got much more crowded later on. The menu here is fairly simple and straightforward. I only tried the kimchi & pork jjigae, but my friends also got the chicken jjigae, chef's special jjigae, and seafood fried rice. Our food came out quickly and extremely hot! Like literally, the pot was bubbling furiously with the deep red broth! It was perfect to crack an egg into. The pork soaked up the broth nicely, and the kimchi added a nice tang. This is the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out. I also got a side of purple rice, which was delicious. I love it when they offer alternatives to the regular white rice. I always like tasting the banchan offered. Here, my favorites were the cucumber kimchi or fishcake strips. They even refilled the little dishes once we finished. Definitely will be coming back to Tofu House! I'm always craving soups and jjigae, so I have no doubt that I will return soon. Next time, I want to try the bibimbap...! Did they change ownership again? This place is like a rollercoaster ride of flavor. When it first opened, it tasted great. The food was good quality and tasted good. They changed ownership and the everything went down hill. After a few years it either hired a new chef or changed ownership again. They food was decent at a slightly higher price. Now either they lost that mediocre chef or they changed ownership again. They is worse than the first ownership change. The recipes are closer to Chinese food than Korean. The quality is out the window. The prices are higher. The quantity is less. I'm not sure if the last part is a pro or a con. Would you want more or less bad food for what you pay for? The tofu soups were bland. The beef ribs were paper thin. The japchae was gooey and over cooked. If you are looking for authentic korean soon tofu, this place is not it. It wasn't all bad though. The stew was decent. Quantities are generous, but not inexpensive. They have also continued to provide one complimentary egg per person (which is appreciated in this economy). The service was attentive and fast, and the atmosphere was laid back. While Doc was cracking her raw egg into the sizzling hot pot and furiously mixing the ingredients, I was letting my phone post photos for Yelp. The outcome- my rice, some kalbi and bean sprouts were scorched black. Not to worry, I added some of the shoyu looking sauce and ate the top portion of my bowl. Everything comes out super hot, so you know it's fresh! Finally had the chance to try out The famous tofu house. Since the weather was cold, we were craving some hot tofu soup to keep us warm. A small cozy place to have a meal with friends and family. The service was pretty fast and attentive. The only thing I would say negative was that the back house staff wasn't subtle in letting us know they were closing. We were seated next to the food window. The kept banging the pots and one of the staff yelled for attention to foh (it was in Korean so I didn't understand.) the restaurant wasn't closing for another 10 minutes but there were still two parties inside the restaurant. Other than that the food was still good. I would recommend chefs special and the meat party. I would say just like anywhere in convoy this is a popular plaza for food. Tofu house has been around for a long time. It's not my favorite place for soondobu as that title belongs to Young Dong Tofu in Arcadia, 2 hour drive away. But for San Diego, tofu house on convoy is not bad. The menu isn't big, it's got maybe 4-5 different flavors of tofu. We ordered the seafood special which had everything in it. The meal comes with 4 side dishes. All of them are pretty decent, my favorite being the kimchi. It also comes with your choice of white or brown (purple really) rice which is delicious. The broth of the tofu is light and savory. There were tons of toppings in the soup. They don't skimp. They use large shrimp and everything tasted fresh. So why did I not give it 5 stars? Well, their ventilation is horrible, borderline bad for your health. 2 tablets away from us ordered some sizzling meat and the whole restaurant filled with so much smoke you can't really see through it for a good 10 minutes. I coughed so much I needed to step out. It's a shame because the food really isn't bad. But next time I'm doing takeout. read more

Even instant tofu soup tastes better. Only four side dishes, no option for a traditional bibimbap, and I don't know why they add glass noodles to the stone pot rice, which makes it weird. The stone pot rice comes in a sizzling bowl, but it was already completely charred when it arrived at our table, not the usual crispy layer you can control by stirring right away, just burnt and inedible. read more

So I'm the type to never leave reviews on yelp but the food here was just so bad that for the first time in my life I'm compelled to. We ordered the chef's combo that comes with one tofu soup and one steaming bowl of bibimbap. To switch the tofu soup to something other than the default seafood one is $2 more which was already kind of a red flag. I decided to switch to the kimchi beef tofu soup as I wasn't fond of seafood. The side dishes were dry, bland, and had absolutely no flavor. Probably the worst side dishes I've ever eaten at a Korean restaurant. When the main dishes came out I immediately noticed a funky smell coming from the tofu soup. It also looked pretty watery at first glance, as if it was 90% water and 10% actual flavor. My suspicions were confirmed when I had my first bite of the tofu soup. It was extremely bland, the tofu had no flavor, the meat was way too chewy and overcooked and it even had a weird dish soapy aftertaste. The bibimbap was no better. It was gooey, bland, and felt like I was just shoveling flavorless slop into my mouth. I remember coming here years ago and don't remember it being this bad. I guess I should've known something was off when this place is always empty when all the other restaurants in the same plaza are usually packed in the evenings. In the end the entire meal was almost $40 as well which thinking back now was probably the most regretful $40 I've ever spent on a restaurant meal. After we left I ended up going straight to The Taco Stand next door and eating a taco just to get the taste of whatever I had here out of my mouth. Please do better Tofu House. read more

Tofu house is a restaurant that serves up quality food that has home cooked/ comfort vibes. My go-to here is the Bulgogi Boiled Tofu ($15). The soup is very rich in flavor and is packed with lots of tofu, big pieces of bulgogi, and vegetables. It is served with a side of white or brown rice and an egg that you crack into the boiling soup. They have upgraded their water from single-use plastic water bottles to pitches that they can refill. One downside about the place that I have is the lack of proper ventilation. They serve a lot of hot stone items, but the smoke pours into other tables until the item cools down.
