I let my fingers walking through Yelp and found this restaurant, looked and the menu and headed off. When I arrived it was fairly crowded but I found a table and was seated. My server brought a menu, I glanced and decided on a yellowtail roll, a California roll and a specialty roll called Kobe. The Kobe was interesting, having Kobe beef paired with king crab. It was good and definitely interesting. I'm not sure I would get it again, but I would certainly try some of their other specialty rolls when I next go back. There are some good food items, but don't expect to be overly impressed by the quality. Maybe it's because I was born and raised in Seattle and in my 10 years of living on the East Coast. I realize most Asian restaurants have different standards, but the food here is just not good. I've been to 18-8 many times and am always very happy with my food. Their lunch specials are really good with a pretty wide selection available for a fairly reasonable price especially because good sushi can really get expensive. For lunch, I recommend the sashimi bento box (pictured). It comes with rice, salad, California roll, two fried sushi pieces, and then a good sized sashimi platter. I have also had many of their special rolls and the lobster mango is my favorite. If you have never had mango in sushi rolls before, I highly recommend it! I got a ton of takeout from them during the pandemic and was always satisfied with how carefully they packaged each order and made sure to pay attention to the special instructions. Now they are open for indoor seating although I've yet to actually take advantage of that. Located within the Rotunda shopping center, parking can be a bit challenging depending on the day and time. I normally get some combination of sushi, miso soup, and maybe a fried appetizer of sorts. They have a pretty good lunch Maki deal during the week that comes with two or three sushi rolls of choice, a salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. It's a lot of food for a good price ($10-$13 depending on how many rolls you get)! I will say the one thing I got from here that I was not a fan of was the bento box. I ordered it with the salmon and it was lacking in flavor. That said, I haven't tried any of the other meat entrees so maybe the chicken or beef might be better? Pro tip: order through their website for pickup to avoid extra fees from third party apps. It's usually ready within 15-20 minutes! read more

The curry that they give you with any kind of cutlet is sour and the cutlet itself lacks flavor. Honestly I'd only ever go here for the sushi which is decent at best. As for the service I was with a group of people when I went and we had only sat down to look at the menu and look and it felt like we were pressured into ordering so we decided to stay regardless. They have a mandatory "service fee" that is above six dollars and still have an option to tip. They don't tell you about the service fee and just sit the check in front of you so you can be surprised by it at the end of your meal. If you're looking to get a good meal that I'll leave you full for under 30 bucks I don't recommend this place their appetizer serving sizes are really small, since when isn't appetizer ordered for only one person unless that person is alone. They're calamari is tough and rubbery and also lacks flavor. A lot of their fried foods get their flavor from a mediocre sauce. Also nothing has free refills unless it's a water or a fountain soda which they only have Coca-Cola and Sprite. The price wasn't worth the experience and I won't be coming back. read more

Decided to stop by late on a Friday after movie night. There were lots of tables available and the atmosphere was pretty nice. We were greeted pretty quickly upon arriving and seated immediately. After perusing the menu we decided on the Volcano Roll and I believe the Sunshine Roll. When our meal arrived I found the rice on the outside of both rolls to be extremely dry and I found the taste of them both to be unremarkable. Another takeout dinner from 18-8 and overall very good. They are available on Doordash but with a significant markup in prices so if you can pick up your order you'll save a fair amount. The food is not quite as good as Sho You in Fed Hill (which is the best sushi in Baltimore) and is a bit more expensive, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. For appetizers we had the shumai dumplings (steamed shrimp dumplings), the Gyoza (pan fried pork dumplings), seaweed salad, edamame, spicy edamame and duck roll. The dumplings, both kinds, were fantastic and the ponzu-like dipping sauce they came with was perfect. The seaweed salad was standard and good and duck roll was okay but had very little duck in it. I would suggest adding more duck meat to make this a better dish. The edamame was standard but the spicy edamame left something to be desired. It was covered in a kind of spicy mayo that wasn't all that good. I would not order it again. We had 3 special rolls, the Tiger, Dragon King and Tuna Amazing and one regular roll, the Alaska (salmon, cucumber and avocado). The Tiger is Salmon, eel, topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, eel, spicy mayo sauce, crunch, masago & scallion on top. It was good but didn't blow me away. Same with the Tuna Amazing which was good but not as flavorful as I would have thought given the interesting mix of different kinds of tuna. It is White tuna tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, topped with pepper tuna and a special sauce, caviar, and scallion. The Dragon King was the best, with Soft shell crab and snow crab in sesame soy wrapper topped with eel and avocado. I would get this one again for sure but I'm not as sure about the others. Don't get me wrong, they were good, just not fantastic. The nigiri was quite well prepared. We had tuna, salmon, yellowtail, unagi, scallop and octopus. All were very good quality and delicious fish. Reasonable serving size as well. If I have the time to drive across town to get to Sho You, that will always be my top choice for sushi but 18-8 is still very good and a lot closer so we'll be back and if you live in the area I suggest you check it out as well. read more

I've picked up 18-8 for lunch a couple of times, and it's pretty good sushi. Each time I've gone by, I've ordered ahead on the website and taken the food to go. Ordering online is easy, and they're very fast. I've tried: black pepper tuna, avocado, and scallion roll, yellowtail jalapeno roll, crab rangoon, Philadelphia roll, and avocado roll. I had some time to kill before seeing a movie at the movie theater next door so I thought I would eat one of my favorite foods before showtime. I walked in and there's a sign that says "please wait to be seated." I waited by that sign for 20 minutes, being purposefully ignored by the waitstaff that were sitting other people. I opted for one with a salad, the other with miso soup (included with lunch special). It was a 15 minute wait, they have the front entrance blocked off by a table though so you can't wait inside. You also must order & pay at this blockade and wait for a staff member to show up and detect your presence since there's no one standing right inside (awkward). Food was ready by then. We sat at some tables set up outside of the pizza place nearby and ate under the hot sun... I was really thrown off by the strange taste of the "curry" which was a thick reddish-orange slurry tasted a lot like ketchup and nothing like Thai red curry. It consisted mostly of random vegetables and a little bit of thinly sliced chicken breast. The chicken & broccoli in brown sauce was SOO SALTY and they put a ton of cornstarch in the dark soy sauce base that it wasn't very easy to brush off the clumps of sauce. Salad was fresh though, and the miso soup tasted a bit watered down. I could tell it's one of those mediocre Chinese/Asian places that sell a hodge podge of random Asian food not correctly prepared. Flavors are VERY OFF and not traditional. My sister lives at Icon so my boyfriend and I decided to check out some food spots around the area before we headed back to Virginia (womppp). We happened to come by as soon as it opened at 11am on Labor Day (surprised and happy it was open!). It was a big, open restaurant with nice lighting and very clean. Music was just playing from the radio, but it was still pretty good music playing. We ordered edamame and fried fish dumplings for an appetizer and it was pretty good. Let's just get on to the sushi. We got 4 Special Rolls (3 were his, lol). I got the Sunshine Roll and tried a piece of his Winter Roll and both we just so freaking good. When I first walked in the customer service was great, the place was empty for a for a Friday night. The waiter was nice. Thee decor was nice, with a nice bar. They started cleaning, while we were there, and closing time was not until 11pm. We order the Bento Boxes chicken and salmon. I requested the hot and sour soup, the soup was good. I was really craving sushi the other day, so decided to try ordering delivery from 18-8 sushi since the food looked good and I had never tried their food before. My friend and I ended up getting the sashimi platter for 2, which came with 40 pieces for $48. Sashimi was good but not great: PROS: decent variety (tuna, salmon, white tuna, mackerel, yellowtail, albacore), pretty presentation, decent price for 40 pieces. CONS: very thin slices (what can you expect for the price), some of the pieces were overly fishy (made me occasionally question the freshness). I ordered some of the more unusual appetizers on the menu, and though they looked interesting, the taste was just okay (which does not cover for its price). I will say that the best thing I had here was not sushi at all, but rather the chicken katsu a friend was eating. The shoppes in the Rotunda made their team stronger when they added this sushi restaurant. This location is great and it's exciting to see such a cool community development in this part of Baltimore/Hampden. Maybe the best part of 18-8 Sushi: Happy Hour daily from 3-6pm. We ordered a number of items from the happy hour menu and were filled up with our options. A highlight was the spicy tuna crunch roll. Subtle bits of "crunch" from tempura flakes made this texture and flavor delicious. We also ordered the shrimp tempura roll off the regular menu and were surprised with how huge this roll was. They include two shrimp tempura pieces in the roll making for a huge bite. One other thing that made this roll different from other sushi restaurants was it included shredded lettuce - weird flex but ok. Parking may look limited based on the spots outside the restaurants, but there is a nice parking garage just behind the restaurant. We ate on a Sunday and spend about an hour here and parking in the garage was free. read more

I stopped by this new restaurant as I was craving for sushi. The interior was very nice and clean. The waiters were also very nice and attentive. It felt very accommodating and just elevated our time there up a notch! I ordered the sashimi tartare and to my surprise, it was very well executed. The sauce on top was not is too overpowering and added a great texture The shrimp tempura rolls were good and were fried to a nice crispness. And I liked how the end piece were very long almost felt like a two in one! A shrimp tempura and shrimp tempura roll! I cant remember what my friends ordered but they said it was delicious and abit spicy. It wasn't too spicy to the point where we couldn't handle it but it was great. I've been to 18-8 quite a few times and I've also done carry out with them. In the past, I loved it. The fish is consistently good and fresh (I have gotten the vegetarian rolls, the specialty rolls and the more basic rolls and never been disappointed.) The soups are delicious-the coconut shrimp curry and the tom yum tasted authentic. Why 3 stars? The portions have gotten smaller and smaller and for the price point, it is simply not worth it. Today I left the restaurant and after a soup and main dish, I was very far from full or even satisfied. My spouse and I spent almost $50 (including the tip) and I went home and had a snack. Went here on Friday night for dinner with my girl, and we split 5 rolls - 1 classic and 4 specialty. My girl picked the Lobster Mango and Sunshine specialty rolls, while I picked the Dancing Tuna and Pretty Woman specialty rolls. Relatively empty for a Friday night so we were seated right away and the service was attentive and quick. Second time we have been here and the sushi has been tasty both times. Lobster Mango was my favorite as the mango came through just a bit to provide some sweetness without being overpowering. Pretty Woman said it had spicy tuna, but I didn't taste any spice. There was a good crunch from the shrimp tempura which I like, but it needed ginger and/or wasabi to provide some added punch. Dancing Tuna was my second favorite. The blackened tuna on top paired well with the avocado, and the spicy tuna crunch provided a little kick. Sunshine I felt had the least amount of flavor of the 4 speciality rolls, but the pieces were the smallest of the 4 and more easily eaten in one bite. Still was a good roll when adding wasabi/ginger/soy sauce. We also got the Spicy Shrimp Mango Classic roll, which was delicious. The mango was less prevalent than in the Lobster Mango, but that could have been due to the amount on each piece. Overall, I really like this place. It's okay... Long story short... Food: Reasonable with a mix of good quality and mediocre ingredients. Price: Fair but have adjusted their prices so it's different from what's listed so be sure to check in case you order online.
