Came here on New Year's Eve out of convenience. We arrived around 4pm to find that the restaurant was closed so we walked around for a bit and decided to look for other options within the mall. As we were leaving we noticed that the lights were slowly turning on so we proceeded inside to ask if there were seats available for our family. No, we don't usually come here and a big reason why it is because the service is terrible and food is expensive for mediocre quality that is not even owned and ran by Japanese people. We usually come here out of convenience, especially knowing that we have two kids. It gives us an opportunity to eat while watching the kids play. So knowing all of this, we don't expect much . But I was really unhappy with this particular experience because when we placed our order, they got our order wrong two times to the point where I didn't want to correct them anymore. I also suspect that they reused the sashimi on the don to make our nigiri because the shrimp tail was already fallen off. Adding to this the waitresses overall service was very unpleasant . It was New Year's Eve and they couldn't even squeeze out a smile. It was like they were mad at something. Again, we already know service isn't great, but this is next level bad . When we were seated, one of the waitresses was also just waking up from her nap in the corner. I know a lot of influencers are raving about this gem, but the only gem part about it. I want to love this place because it's conveniently located in Lansdowne with lots of parking, they have a lot of options for kids meal and decent sized bento box selections during lunch time. The place is packed with lots of family with kids and there's a small play area for young kids. But the service is...slow, and odd. Hubby's Sashimi Bento arrived 15min before the rest of our food came so he was done by the time the kids meal and my Sushi Bento arrived. My Sushi Bento was supposed to have 4pcs of California Roll but I got 2pc instead and 2pc something else... we weren't sure if they ran out of ingredients to finish the California roll? This place is located Lansdown Mall, free parking, specious with good food. The restaurant has lots of tables, and it pretty busy when we visited during lunch hour on a week day. They even offer discounts on kids menu on Tuesdays, as promoted. Even thought it's quite busy, the restaurant isn't overly loud. Lots of family and people work around the area go there. They have a a couple menus to choose from. I went with the bento lunch and special set menu, and got myself a sashimi bento set. It comes with side pieces of sashimi? Three pieces of assorted tempuras, and four California rolls and a couple of salmon pressed sushi. Miso soup came out first. I was quite satisfied after the meal. It's light enough yet got lots of proteins. It also comes with some seaweed and mochi as starters. The service seems to be on point, we had someone checking on us periodically to take away some empty dishes. There was a little bit of wait since we ordered, but they seem to be short staffed, so I don't blame them. We were at Lansdowne Mall, and wanted to grab some lunch. We normally grab something at the food court, but walking by Toku and looking at the display menu, it looked reasonably priced so decided to give it a try. It looks like a restaurant that at one time, was really nice when it had it's last renovation, but has just worn down over time. Not in a poor state, but clearly quite tired looking. We were provided with 4 different menus - the regular menu, the lunch menu, a bento menu, and special sheet. It's a lot to take in, but naturally moved to the lunch/bento menus. I ended up getting the chicken teriyaki bento box. The picture on the menu fairly represents what I got. Teriyaki chicken breast on a large bed of rice - the teriyaki sauce was thick and seemed like something from a bottle. The two aburi oshi were not bad, and maki included both a California pieces and spicy tuna pieces. Tempura was OK - a little bready. Miso was average. Service is pretty minimal. Took our order fairly quickly, and made sure our green tea pot was always full, but took awhile to get our plates cleared and get the bill. Overall it was fine. This place was a dime a dozen - average all around and nothing that differentiates it from from the hundreds of Japanese restaurants in Metro Vancouver. Shopped at TnT at Lansdowne, went to Toku for a quiet relaxing late lunch. My hubby been there a few times with friends but this is my first time here. He ordered the sashimi set lunch and I had the sushi set. Both sets came with miso soup and small dish of greenish sea kelp or seaweed+ mixed tempura. Each set costs about $20, reasonable price. Raw fish didn't leave any sweetness aftertaste when finished though. The tempura is very good, 2 shrimps + Carrot+ zucchini+ sweet potato pcs Lightly batter coated, crispy and not greasy. This is an underrated gem in a prime area of Richmond. My first time experience was positive and pleasant in terms of food and service. It was a weekday (not Friday) evening in September. - Sanshouku Don (Salmon, Uni and Ikura) - Saba Shio - Matcha Tiramisu Located in Lansdowne Centre where the storefront is facing the parking lot in the north. The main entrance takes you into this spacious restaurant with different seating options. The host and server I had were attentive and nice. My table had a built-in buzzer to request service which is quite cool. They have a wide range of menu from sushi, sashimi, to noodle, udon, and rice, etc. So many dishes to choose from. It's great to go with a group of friends. The Sanshouku Don I had was very fresh. They were quite generous with the ingredients. It was a great portion. I loved the creamy richness of these uni (sea urchin). Delicious! Besides the main dish, the order comes with miso soup and a couple of side dishes (red bean paste mochi and marinated seaweed and daikon). The Saba Shio was nicely cooked. The skin of the mackerel was crispy while the flesh was tender and juicy. Perfect to drizzle with lemon. Some restaurants may cook it too dry. Another delicious dish! Last but not least. The Matcha Tiramisu dessert was beyond yummy. As a matcha lover, the matcha flavour was definitely there. The egg custard was very creamy, and its sweetness didn't overpower the matcha. Yum yum! Located in Lansdowne Mall, this restaurant offer a lot of parking and we visited this Japanese restaurant a few times being this spot is close to Toys R Us, refuelling after kids shopping trip. Due to early dinner time (4:45pm when we arrived) we are at a empty restaurant and was seated quickly in a booth seat. On table you see hand sanitizer and was served tea/water in disposable cups. Server was quick to help and friendly. We ordered kids meal and 2 set lunches, with each set we added a sashimi side. Both of our box set are very similar, only difference is one is chicken and the other is beef. I really enjoyed their salad dressing but you can tell is boxed salad, California roll was good but not special, sashimi tasted rather fresh and cooked meat have decent amount of sauces. The portion is quite big compared to a lot of places so overall, it's great value. Kids meal was served in a train platter, they also have other variety that really works with different age group children which I found amazing. The eggs were a bit dry as well as the fried chicken (it's quite hard to chew) but it hit all the spots for my kiddo with steam broccoli California roll and grapes. Kids meal so comes with juice box and a jelly treat. Very generous portions so It can feed a big kid full for sure! I had never thought of trying this place because the previous AYCE operation in that space was....not at it's best. (But really, can you trust the freshness of raw fish at AYCE when it's too cheap?) On top of that, that place was dark...probably because they didn't want to you to see how "fresh" the fish really was. Upon entry, I thought I stepped into Earl's (next door) by mistake. It had a high ceiling, shown off by bright lights. They have a big bar as the "center piece" and many tables nicely spaced out. You won't feel cramped in any seating. With a larger group, they gave us the table upstairs at the end, which provides a nice view of the entire restaurant from atop. So 5/5 on ambience! Our server was friendly and all smiley. She did her job by trying to upsell but our host knew what she wanted....which was even better than what the server was trying to sell us. ;-) Firat came the raw lobster, first of a two course meal. Then came the sushi and kitchen items. All good but nothing extraordinary. They do try harder to be authentic. The tempura came with the radish daijon oroshi on the side. What was different had to be the dessert. We ordered a tray with 8 very Japanese items ranging from dorataki to hojicha custard to Marcha tiramisu. Presentation was 5/5. Taste wise it was hit and miss. For $30, I can see they put lots of effort into decorating the whole platter. (I was watching the manager preparing it with care at the bar from my seat above.) Since we had a big group and it was our first time, much time passed by before we actually started to eat each time the food arrived. We did cheers and of course took photos for that Instagram moment. Next time, I'd like to go with just a few friends and try their sushi. Again, another spot I may have looked over if it hadn't been for the Feast Dining Festival. I was very impressed with this spot. Located in the Lansdowne Center, Toku is unassuming and unpretentious. This was one of 3 stops on mine and Simon K.'s Feast Takeover Tour and personally, it was my favourite of the three we went to. Like most Japanese restaurants, they have a large menu consisting of maki, sushis, sashimis, aburis, dons, udons, and more. We decided to split a few things: the foie gras toast (their Feast signature dish), uni sushi, scallop magma roll, and for dessert, the strawberry mochi. I'm picky when it comes to uni, but this one was fresh and delicious. I wrapped it with some seaweed and topped it with lemon and soy sauce, and called it good. The foie gras toast was good, but I probably won't order this when I come back, purely because there are so many other dishes to try. I LOVED the scallop magma roll. This had spicy tuna mixed w/ tempura bits inside the roll and it was topped with chopped scallop and black sesame sauce. In my opinion, good maki rolls are when you don't have to eat it with soy sauce to add more flavour, they're good as is. And that's how I felt about the scallop magma roll. I'd order this again and again. But my favourite? The strawberry mochi. I loved this so much that we ordered another round. I could eat twenty of these and be a happy, happy, happy camper. Service was great and each table even has a call button so if you need something or are ready to order you can just press the button. Technology at it's finest! I remember coming to Toku when it first opened a few years ago, and I wasn't particularly blown away, but I've been coming back in recent months, and they've been fantastic! Great prices for the quality of food and portion sizes. Especially when compared with other Japanese restaurants in Richmond with similar menu selections. For instance, 7 pieces of blue fin red tuna at Toku was about $22-26, whereas 4 pieces of the same would be $25 at a nearby Japanese restaurant. Toku also has a rotating seasonal menu, so there's always something new to try. Their menu is so extensive, with both raw and cooked offerings; there will be something for everyone. The space is also very comfortable to sit in, with all the tables being booths, and they have the space for larger parties too. During this visit, we ordered the lobster sashimi & hotpot (lobster 2 ways), which was on special for about $45. The lobster tail portion was made into sashimi (delicious, so fresh), and the rest of the lobster was made into the hotpot. Since they incorporated the entire lobster into these two dishes, $45 is a pretty good deal. We also ordered the blue fin red tuna sashimi off the seasonal menu, and it melted in our mouths. The hamachi sushi and seared salmon sushi were nice and fresh too. Lastly, we chose one of their special rolls with fresh mango slices on top and prawn tempura on the inside. Attended this restaurant for the first time. Went on a Monday and after the busy lunch hours. The place looks clean and nicely decorated interior. Ordered their Sashimi Bento Lunch $20.95. Their miso soup was excellent, hot and tasty, not too salty nor watered down. The seaweed salad was also great. Service was also impressive. Why? Because I dropped my chopstick, bent down to pick it up and as I raised my head, there was already a waitress infront of me handing me a new pair of chopsticks. IMPRESSIVE! Then they came around refilling my tea mug, though I had to call their attention the next time I wanted a refill. For me, it was filling. I had to force myself to finish off the California rolls. In Richmond, you rarely to find a Japanese restro so spacious and some distance between the seats. Beef sashimi - our dish served the freezing cold beef and taste quite light. Hamachi Kama - it's was good. Charred outside and still juicy inside. BBQ squid and chicken stew - it's cooked perfectly. Trio sashimi we ordered just ok. Pretty generous portion but not fresh as I expected. The food, service and price overall was ok. Reasonably quick service though I waited like 15 mins to pay at the end (but they were quite busy), even though they have bell service. Two things of note: (1) the tipping POS conflates the your subtotal with your total with tax combined. So if you're paying via percentage, you'll be paying on top of taxes, which isn't cool. (2) Secondly, tables are very sticky here and the layout is very strange. Tables are on top of steps, so you have to be careful when getting in and out of booths. This is especially inconvenient when you come with older patrons or those with mobility challenges. Other than that, this was a good Japanese place that I will return to. read more

My friend is a loyal customer of this restaurant and suggested this restaurant for a lunch date. The ambiance is very nice and emulate what you would expect at a fine dining establishment with menu prices to match. However, they do offer lunch specials for those who do not want to pay the premium pricing. I ordered the teriyaki beef set that included miso soup, appetizer and rice. The portion size was good. The quality was average. I ordered a black sesame parfait afterwards and it was pretty good for what it was. It had everything you would typically find in an Asian parfait- red bean, corn flakes, mochi and jelly. Toku Japanese Restaurant is located in Lansdowne Centre, directly across from Earls (on the north side of the mall). It's a surprisingly large restaurant with high ceilings and call buttons located on the tables (similar to what you'd find at many Korean restaurants). Being the polite and reserved Canadian people that we are, we didn't even try to use the call buttons during our meal but we didn't have to as service was pretty good and it was easy to get the attention of the servers. We arrived for lunch during a weekend in late May and found that the place was fairly busy but managed to get a table. Their menu is fairly extensive so it was a bit difficult to decide what we were going to order. We wound up with the Sashimi Set ($18) which included 8 pieces of assorted sashimi, 5 pieces of tempura, miso soup, 3 piece California roll and an appetizer dish. The appetizer dish was the first to arrive at the table and contained a bit of edamame beans as well as seaweed salad. That was promptly followed by the freshly fried tempura which consisted of 2 pieces of prawn tempura, eggplant, zucchini, and potato with a bit of daikon oroshi (grated daikon radish) on the side. The sashimi, consisting of 3 pieces of salmon, 3 pieces of seared tuna, hokkaigai (surf clam), and hamachi (yellowtail) were just okay. I found the salmon to be a bit stringy (which typically means it was not cut properly). We also ordered the Unagi Don ($18.50) with pickled radish and miso soup along with the Oyster Motoyaki ($10) which came served in the shell. The melt-in-your-mouth unagi was one of the highlights of our meal here and we wound up using the rice in this dish with our creamy motoyaki. It comes in 2 pieces and we know what the other one looks like. I asked the manager and got the same answer and can make me a new one. Sure, the piece came back the same to prove their point. At least I find out that it's just a bad value item on their menu. I've ordered flamed sushi at many other Japanese restaurants including at Toku before, just never had been so disappointed. So they have this creation called the 'Mt. Fuji' don, which is essentially a chirashi don with a chunk of crab meat in the middle and a quail egg on top. We ordered this chirashi bowl/combo which was very overly priced...$35.99 for less than 10 pieces of sashimi, a bowl of miso soup, a few pieces of reddish etc and that was it! So it comes with lowered expectations that we had dinner here. KTB, her friend and I and Mom came for dinner. KTB thought the sushi was pretty good. Asking her for a rating she gave it 4 stars. Interesting. I ordered myself he mushroom tofu hot pot which was expectedly simple and healthy. No Gluten or wheat or carbs and I very much enjoyed that. yes. I rated it pretty good. Then again, you can't really do wrong with this type of dish. For me, the less flavour the better as I tend to like more often the simpler flavours than the bold. Must be my old age and appreciation for plain food. Well, also that and dietary restrictions pop up now and then. Mom had teriyaki which she really enjoyed. I still can't get over my family who are Japanese Canadian and don't eat sushi. The rest of us had the sushi and yes, I have to admit. KTB was right the sushi is decent. Clean, decent service and not too noisy. Maybe we came before the rush, but it seems this place is coming around. For sure, they're always busy during lunch. Mostly because of the cheaper alternative lunch boxes they serve. I do remember when they first opened up here with the fancy chefs and the hi-potency prices. People realized they weren't getting the bang for their buck. This is Richmond afterall. Land of the cheap eaters. The place is better suited for Vancouver. Hopefully they'll stick around and keep doing what they're doing because I think they're now on the right path. Honestly? There's just way to many Japanese sushi restaurants of this type. Somehow the offerings of this plethora of restaurants has got to thin out a bit. Regardless, I think I am a fan. So far so good. I liked what I got. Then again, I wasn't paying for the meal. Ordered Toku lunch combo with a medium rare steak. Steak came out extra well done. After pointing this out the server took my plate. I was expecting a new dish but they only replaced the steak on my plate which now came out more rare than medium. Lesson learned don't order steak they don't know how to cook it.
