We were seated right away and had our orders taken immediately but we had to wait over half an hour for our food to be made. My 50th birthday celebration was extra special thanks to Tokyo Garden. The food and drinks were amazing. Tokyo Garden is never a disappointment. We always receive excellent service. The waitresses and teppanyaki chefs are always friendly and accommodating. The owner even came by our table to make sure we were enjoying everything. Our family of 8 went to Tokyo Garden to celebrate my wife's birthday. The teppanyaki table service is terrible. Two members of our group had to consistently go out to the bar to refill soft drinks, iced tea, beer and cocktails. Apparently there was a large party that was waiting for our teppanyaki table. 1/2 of the group was seated next to us. The second half of the group kept walking in and making comments that are party apparently didn't understand that a Christmas party was scheduled. To the restaurant, not my problem. We were bum rushed out the door by the servers. Two members of our group weren't even finished eating when our check were handed to us. Even members of the party waiting asked Us if we needed boxes. We were not even offered dessert. I spoke with the manager about this and was left so unsatisfied with the response that I will never go back nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone. We spent over $300 and I would've had better service at McDonald's. read more

Ate lunch with a group of 7 here today. I'll start with the design/decor/layout. Well laid out and spacious enough that we had a private section for the teppanyaki grill. The koi pond at the entrance and the fish tank in the lobby are a nice touch. The server was not knowledgeable about menu options or what was being offered. She was attentive and offered refills before drinks were empty so that was nice. The chef was great! He put on a good show and entertained/interacted throughout. Another gentleman (owner? manager?) did a few magic tricks which were great for the kids and also piqued the adults interest. As for the food, it was decent. Definitely not worth it. My girlfriend and I went in for teppanyaki, seating was horrible and very uncomfortable. The salad was absolutely disgusting, you could tell it was just store bought salad mix from a bag, and it was extremely watery. The miso soup was decent. Their "market price" for the seafood special (lobster, Calamari, Shrimp) was a range of $180-$270, so I instead opted for chicken and calamari, my girlfriend got the New York steak and chicken. Calamari and chicken were over cooked and the only flavor you got was soy sauce, since that's what it was drowned in. The fried rice and vegetables were nothing special. I also ordered sushi, the dynamite roll, which came out stuck on the aluminum foil, so each piece just broke apart. It was decent, nothing special. We did order the tempura green tea ice cream which was pretty good. TL:DR; We paid $140, not worth it in the least. Food is not good but upcharged like it was a very fancy restaurant. Been coming here for years, rarely sit at the teppanyaki, but from what I can remember, this place is solid. Anyways, Tokyo Garden is much like Benihana, but more of a locally owned spot, in Visalia and Fresno. The food is around a 3-4 rating, but what gives this place the 4 is the atmosphere, decor, and garden/stream with the koi out in front. Anyways, this last time I was there it was more of a 3 xperience, all we ordered was sushi, and appetizers: calamari, cucumber salad and chicken wings. Tiger tail was really good. The tuna, red snapper and unagi were standard. The rice was pretty good too, but not great. The chicken wings and the Tiger Tail were the highlights If you're in Visalia, there's like, 6 different places you can go to get Sushi, I'd say this is place is in the top 3 PS - I was really disappointed in the Calamari. I expected the crunchy batter but we got the tempura style. Also, the squid was long cut, not small little rings. It looked like a tempura mozzarella stick. read more

My family and I have been coming to TG for years- I'd say at least 20. It has only been in the last few years that I have enjoyed the sushi that they make here. I have had numerous special occasions at the Teppanyaki tables- that is always fun and entertaining and who doesn't like sharing all that food with your group of friends. Sushi bar is a different kind of meal being near the chefs while they create your meal in a more intimate manner. Service is unique in the way that my family has come to know the family who own and run the restaurant. So it is more like visiting friends when you come in for a meal. It has been years since I last visited this restaurant. I usually eat at Gozen down the road, but when I attempted to order sushi rolls from Gozen, there was a one hour wait. So, I thought I'd give Tokyo Garden a try. If you know anything about sushi, you know there are two very important components to good sushi (1) the freshest ingredients, which is especially important when it comes to seafood, and (2) properly prepared rice (i.e., flavorful and texturally balanced). My wife and I ordered close to $60 of sushi rolls, on a Friday night, and we had a less than satisfying experience. First, some of the fish used to prepare the rolls were clearly not fresh as evidenced by the fishy smell. Second, the rolls were mostly rice and lacked composing ingredients. Third, the rice was overly moist , sticky, and lacked flavor. Lastly, the unagi sauce looked old, thick, and stringy (definitely, not fresh). Plus, they applied way too much for an individual roll and it really took away from the flavor of the small amount of ingredients in the roll. We also ordered an order of fried rice, which was just okay. There was no meat or veggies apparent. It seemed to me the itamae (sushi chefs) or the owner took very little pride in the preparation and presentation of their food. Very unfortunate. I will not return, and will likely decide to wait for Gozen next time. read more

Brought my Mom and Cousin in for a birthday dinner they absolutely loved it, the beautiful entrance with a bridge was a nice touch to view the pond/garden very peaceful with huge Koi fish. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and the decor nice, simple, clean, you definitely get a little taste of Japan. My Fam received a great hibachi experience, had a taste of the chicken fried rice, with fresh veggies, myself i order sushi and vegetable tempura. The end they were kind enough to sing and wish my Mom a Happy birthday served with a complimentary ice cream made with Green tea and vanilla very delicious if you enjoy green tea. This place is actually suprisingly decent. The setting is really cute, a koi pond where the koi follow you while you walk hoping to get fed. The fish is very fresh and the rolls are ok. The best roll that i tried was the sunset roll, the rainbow roll was nothing to sneeze at and there was a three-amigos roll which was actually ok. Sadly though, this is probably one of the best places that you're going to find for sushi in a 20 mile radius. read more

As far as sushi goes in the Central Valley, Tokyo Gardens is above average - but I don't know if that's really saying much. I'd much rather have sushi here than say, Gozen. Both follow the same quasi-sushi menu template: provide a vague ingredient description coupled with a catchy name, and then the sushi chefs will make the roll however they please on that day (there really is no consistency, but decent tasting most of the time). Aesthetically, the restaurant is very nice, as another reviewer stated. However, they just recently jacked their prices by what feels like 10-20% ($24 for a beef teriyaki dinner, combos range from $23-$28 a dinner, $18 for their pricier rolls). Made a reservation for 7:30 which turned into an 8:15 by the time we were sat down. After being sat we were told we'd have appetizers and sushi on the house due to our excessive wait. Our chef didn't come until 9 to cook our food. After everything was said and done we were then charged for our sushi which was supposed to be on the house which was argued that "they said they'd pay for one appetizer not any sushi". Hadn't been here in years and it used to be my favorite place. However, after last night, we probably won't go back. We waited close to an hour for our sushi. And it was disappointing when we got it. We got a variety and 3 out of the 5 rolls fell apart while trying to eat them. There wasn't much flavor to any of them and each had very little filling. Not what I remembered from the past. They had uni which was delicious and is hard to find in this area, but at the extraordinary price of $17 for a two-piece sushi! I also ordered a Philly roll and a muscles appetizer and was very dissapointed in both! They use TONS of rice like the cheap places (yet this place might be the most expensive in town) with a tiny chopped pieces of salmon (not a good cut of meat) and a tiny dab of cream cheese and avocado. All I could taste was rice which wasnt seasoned very well. I didn't care for the way these mussles were flavored. They were extra small compared to other restaurant's mussles and besides mayo, all I could taste were the bonito flakes which were abundant and were very dry and salty and I couldnt taste the mussles. Usually, restaurants prepare their mussles fairly similarly but I did not care for TG's unique take on them. Since I haven't tried more of their menu, I'm giving them three stars, but I don't recommend getting anything I ordered, save the uni (Only if you've got money to burn). I had never been here for the sushi until recently and I am thoroughly impressed. The environment is very nice. We got sat at a table with a beautiful view of the gorgeous koi pond. Upon getting seated we were very well taken care of. We ordered a side of edamame and 4 rolls between my hubby and I. The edamame portion was somewhat small but still delicious. They have a beautiful koi pond in the front followed by some beautiful decorations inside as well 2. We felt rushed to order. If you were on a diabetic, renal, cardiac diet (no salt, no sugar, no fat diet) then this place is for you. Bland is chocolate and vanilla. Their food is tap water. You get the picture 4. The waitress barely checked up on us and towards the end she was MIA. It took a while for someone else to get our check. I finally had to get up and look for a waitress to get it.
