Inside smells like Japan bbq perhaps because of the popular premium set, the 11 years old boy enjoyed the cooking experience and the food quality, unfortunately he didn't feel full after finishing the $46 set -- the food portion was on the small side, even the 6 years old boy almost finished everything except 4 slices beef left. I am glad i do not have to travel to Japan or parts unknown to try out this self grill experience that has been on my list. My party and i started with some fried zucchinis to start off our meal. I came here earlier in the evening with my boyfriend since we've been craving gyu katsu for so long since we went to Japan. We came the last hour of closing and there was still a couple of tables eating inside still. We were greeted upon arrival and we didn't need them to tell us how to order as the only thing on the table was the ordering tablet (self-explanatory). We ended up ordering the premium gyu katsu set along with the curry pork cutlet set that comes with rice and sides along with some beer. The drinks and food came out fairly quick and were steaming hot. I like that the curry came on the side so the pork cutlet wouldn't get soggy and you could pour over as much as you want over the cutlets. The veggie sides were a nice touch and complemented the meal well. The gyu katsu didn't taste like Japan to us, but it was still good especially with the wasabi and sweet soy sauce that came with it. If I came back here, I would give the beef tongue a try along with the creamy udon because those also seemed like a favorite for customers. The bar was very high as we visited Kobe Gyukatsu after having been to Tokyo and having the very trendy Gyukatsu Motomura. I was pleasantly surprised to find a dupe of the meal we had in Japan! It was like 70% similar to what we had in Japan. I liked that it came with a lighter ponzu sauce, but wish there was more wasabi. The breading for whatever reason was sticking a lot to the hot plate, which caused burnt panko to accumulate over the course of the meal. The broth was great. The cabbage salad with ginger dressing was identical to the one in Tokyo as well! The meat was very tender already, so I preferred the plain meat compared to kalbi marinated ones. It was a hearty meal, so I would come back for just this alone. The cream udon was just ok, the cream dissolves pretty quickly in the heat of the curry. The curry is very standard Japanese curry, which plenty of veggies. I would say skip this. The service was very fast and we were the first table to be seated upon opening, so we didn't have to wait. Came for the Cream Curry Udon but stayed for the Beef Gyukatsu. We made a reservation for a Friday night and were seated right away. You order on the tablet at your table, and someone will bring the food out to you when it's ready. I really wanted to try their Cream Curry Udon that has a Japanese curry broth with udon, topped with potato cream. The curry has meat and some vegetables cooked in. The broth itself wasn't as thick as I thought it would be, but when you mix in the potato cream it thickens up a little. It was not bad; I would say try it at least once! We also got the Beef Gyukatsu, which is a Japanese-style beef cutlet. The outside is breaded, and they bring an individual stone grill to your table so that you can cook the beef cutlet on it. If you order the Beef Gyukatsu as a set, it's also served with rice, miso soup, cabbage salad, side dishes, and housemade gyukatsu sauce. You're able to park right next to the entrance! 2 cars are able to park in the green just fyi. We got a lot of food they had to move us to a bigger table. I've been to Kobe Gyukatsu a few times now. Honestly this is my go to place! I brought my family here because we love food experiences and Kobe Gyukatsu doesn't disappoint! After ordering through a kiosk, the staff brings the set up to the table which consists of a tray with the food and a ceramic box with a flame inside it. The meat is cooked on the ceramic cube. The meat itself is incredibly fresh and coated with a crunchy katsu finish which works amazingly with the provided sauces. My recommendation is to get the set with the meat and order the kelp egg to dip the meat in after. It gives it a nice creamy flavor! COMFORT FOOD AT ITS FINEST. I've been to Japan three times and let me tell you this was the most comforting meal I've had since the last time I went in 2024. Was it EXACTLY like what you'd get in Japan? No, but it was pretty darn close, especially for being in America. Ordered the Beef Gyukatsu (cheapest meat option), Cheese Cutlet (katsu), and Potato Cream Curry Udon. You order on the tablets they have at the table, and my total for 3 entrees was $84.87 after taxes split between 2 people. A bit pricey, but worth it for the experience. The Beef Gyukatsu set comes with shredded cabbage salad, miso soup, rice, edamame, red pickled ginger, your choice of protein (mine was beef) with a sweet soy sauce, horseradish sauce, and wasabi to dip. The meat was okay. It was crispy on the outside and you can cook it to your preferred done-ness, however I would really recommend to ask for plain salt and pepper to dip the meat in. The sauces were good--my favorite was to add a bit of wasabi directly onto the meat and then dip it in the sweet soy sauce OR just dipping it in the horseradish sauce. However, sometimes eating meat with just salt and pepper is the best way to enjoy the natural flavor of beef so I'll be doing that next time. Rice came out piping hot, cabbage was super fresh and crunchy (just wish they added more dressing) and the pickled ginger was super crunchy! The Cheese Cutlet (katsu) here is DELICIOUS! It comes out super crispy, crunchy on the outside and nice and juicy on the inside! The cheese is also melty so long as you eat it right away. This set also comes with the same shredded cabbage salad, miso soup, rice, edamame, red pickled ginger and a katsu sauce with crushed peanuts. The katsu did not taste overly oily at all and it was a good protein portion! I would absolutely get this again. The Potato Cream Curry Udon was also good. The potato cream is whipped so well that it was essentially a thicker whipped cream consistency. That, combined with the very comforting curry udon made it a good meal. I wish the curry was slightly thicker and the udon noodles were al dente instead of slightly overcooked. I would also ask them for togarashi (chili spice blend) to add some spice. Never came here during all my years living in SoCal, but now living in the Bay and after having just come back from Japan recently, it instantly moved up near the top of my list. We each opted for the Beef Gyukatsu ($26.95) and added the meal set, which cost only an additional $3 over just the beef gyukastsu meat on its own. We also shared the Cream Curry Udon ($17.95), having read and heard so much about it. We greatly enjoyed our gyukatsu set. The beef we ordered was the cheapest of the gyukatsu options, so while the beef wasn't overly tender, it still packed a lot of flavor. The sides that accompanied the meat were good, especially the cabbage with the dressing. It was really fun to re-experience the gyukatsu cooking style again. We also enjoyed the udon - the cream helped cut through some of the spice in the curry (yes, I'm weak with spicy foods) but still provided its own flavor! The udon had a nice chew with it as well. My first time trying this location! The inside was clean and held lots of tables. When we arrived around 5:30 on a Friday, it was empty. You order through their tablet that is fixated on the table. We got the cheaper order of the gyukatsu, cream carbonara udon, soba, and tempura plate. The meat in the gyukatsu is super tender and is a fun activity to sear before eating. From personal experience, I think the cheaper gyukatsu option is sufficient as the quality increase to the more expensive cut is not worth the extra cost. The meat pairs really well with their wasabi and sauces. I enjoy eating the soba, especially on a hot day because they add ice cubes into their dipping sauce. The soba, though, were sticking together and we had a difficult time pulling them apart to dip and eat. The cream carbonara udon came super hot (which is good), however, we felt that the flavor was lackluster. The tempura plate was def the star of the show. For about $18?, you get a whole variety of tempura (onion, sweet potato, shrimp, broccoli, pumpkin) and 4-5 pieces of each. The breading was phenomenal and crispy. From the moment we walked in, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming; the staff took time to explain the menu and the tabletop grilling process perfectly. Our last dish comes 10 minutes after first dish is out. Not good if you are sharing - miso soup is bland and lukewarm. Took one sip and didn't drink it anymore - pork katsu: this was the last dish that came out and the pork was a but dry.and lukewarm. Very disappointed - creamy udon had 2 TINY pieces of beef. $18 for this? A bit extreme - service: lacking, everyone running around like they are lost. They gave us 1 water (?) when we had 3 people. I've had the Creamy Udon in the past, but have yet to try the gyukatsu. I've been missing Japan and on the hunt for the best gyukatsu in Socal. So far this is the top contender, the meat is tender and flavorful. They offer three tiers of gyukatsu $29.95, $35.95, and $45.95. On top of that the meal sets are an additional $3. The meal was very filling, I had everything except for the rice. The cabbage was very bitter, I think it was the cabbage itself and not the dressing. They have a small parking lot and indoor seating with tablets at the table to order, super easy.
