We've had better Ramen back home in SoCal. Service was good. You order your food first and find your own table. We were excited to try this place for lunch and the menu looks quite good. However, given the prices we were a bit disappointed in the serving sizes. Both our dishes were really lacking much in the way of veg - basically just some fried meat, starch (rice/noodles), sauce and the odd bit of seaweed or a couple beans. I've been here twice now, and while delicious I feel the ramen is missing a certain flavor. Umami as we all know it, is the heightened flavor that brings any good Japanese meal together, unfortunately the Raman broth here is just missing this element of flavor that leaves you with a hollow feeling. I suggest you try getting the Butter Corn ramen with Miso broth and try it for yourself. (Although I have had better since I am from CA, but the best I've had in Eugene so far). I have been about 4-5 times. The owners (sweet grandparent vibe) are so sweet and greet you with a smile. The restaurant also has that open kitchen look where you can see them prepare your food homemade style. I love the chicken katsu and how crispy it is. The katsu is more on the thin side than thick, so there is more crispy outer to every bite. The ramen noodles taste fresh and my favorite is the miso base (shoyu is a little too salty for me). Tonkotsu broth was thin and not too flavorful and the noodles were not great quality but the ramen tasted OK and was moderately satisfying on a cold night. This place is absurd. Why have numbers on the menu if your staff can't understand that concept? They got our order wrong and expected us to PAY EXTRA for the correct meal? We ordered two things of ramen and an appetizer. They brought out our appetizer first. Then our entrees came out and they brought out one ramen and one other chicken appetizer (this was incorrect) - keep in mind when I ordered I stated the NUMBER and the name of the dish but they still wrong up the wrong thing. When I told them it was wrong the staff member said they could get me the right thing if we went up and reordered. So you want me to PAY EXTRA for the second appetizer that we didn't order along with the ramen that we initially should've had in the first place?? They never gave us a receipt so how were we supposed to know they rang us up wrong. Also what kind of place doesn't have napkins at the table and you have to specifically ask for them? Solid place with decent service. You order at the counter. I had some sushi and ramen here. It was good, nothing spectacular, but overall very solid. The portion sizes were good. It's downtown so keep in mind parking can be a little frustrating at times. I would definitely go back here although there are now quite a few of Japanese options in Eugene, too. read more

This was a spur of the moment, sprung on me by my husband choice. We love Japanese food and he told me this was a highly rated restaurant. Ambience I'll give a 4/5; my biggest complaint was that it's cold and seating at that time precluded us from being away from the doors and windows. Food we are giving a 3/5; neither of us were very happy with the flavor of our ramen, and my vegetarian ramen was barely flavored at all. My husband got a pork miso ramen and he said the flavor was good but not worth getting again. We were both a bit disappointed but the food didn't taste terrible it was just lacking seasoning in comparison to other ramen restaurants we've tried (outside of the Eugene area). Since being back in Eugene after living in Los Angeles for eight years, I've been craving a good bowl of ramen. With Toshi's closed due to the 'Rona I thought I may be out of luck - until I opted to check out Tokyo Tonkotsu. I'm glad I did! The tonkotsu broth was decent, the egg perfectly cooked to my liking, and the noodles - I wish I'd ordered a second portion! I crushed the bowl in around five minutes (oops). The chashu was dry, but that may be what the owners chose due to regional preferences - aka not the fatty goodness that you get at ramen houses in places like LA (Tsujita, Obikoru, and Silverlake Ramen come to mind), but otherwise delicious. My family were heading to Wildlife safari from Portland. For early lunch we stoped by here. We've got Tonkatsu, Porkdon and Korean style spicy boneless chicken. All of them were so good. The tonkatsu was perfect like what I ate 15yrs ago in Korea. The spicy chicken texuture was so soft and sauce was just like ordinary Korean style. Miso soup was not salty at all. Granted, we came about 45 minutes before closing, but the search for amazing ramen in Eugene continues!! The king ramen looks a lot bigger in the pictures than it actually is. In reality, mine was about the same size as my friend's Tokyo, though a couple bucks more. But there were a TON of string beans, which I'm not a huge fan of, though I can usually tolerate them. Most every bite I had felt like a 71.5/28.5 string bean/noodle ratio. It made everything crunchy, which wasn't ideal. The noodles were also very soft and thick and the broth was watery, which is understandable since we came in pretty late, so they were probably made earlier in the day and left in the cooker. The toppings were good, but I would've hoped for more than 2 thin pieces of pork for a "King Ramen." Can't complain too much, though. the pork was delicious, so I would've been asking for more regardless of how much they gave me. One highlight was the ddukbokki (Korean rice cake) which was pretty bomb. Good texture and good taste. Also on the pricey side, about 15 ish small pieces for 8 or 9 bucks. Didn't feel too satisfying, but tasted pretty dang good. They also know how to do softboiled eggs! They were great in the ramen, and weren't over or undercooked. It was extra in the Tokyo, but came with the King. I'd rate them higher if the noodles tasted more fresh and the broth was stronger. Maybe less string beans would be nice too. The wack bean/nood ratio really killed it for me. Hopefully I can go again earlier in the day and see the rating go up! read more

Wandered in here after looking for a good rice bowl in town. I had been by here many times and never quite took the time to check it out, but I'm glad I did! I had the Tonkatsu Don, which was a rice bowl with egg, onion and chicken katsu on top. There was also a thick, sweet sauce I couldn't quite identify, but it worked beautifully! Great crunch to the chicken, even with the bowl getting steamed up in transit. I ordered it to go and it only took about 5 minutes before the piping hot bowl was packaged and ready for me. There is plenty of parking garages and a few meters nearby if you'd like to sit down in this quiet but nicely decorated space. Our absolute favorite hidden spot for Asian food in Eugene! Their specialty item is chicken and pork Tonkatsu which is amazing! Perfectly crunchy and flavorful. Everything is cooked to order and made with special loving care so expect a little wait time for your food but when it comes out you will be pleased with the care taken to plate your order. The owners are the cooks and take pride in their food. They don't speak English well but try their best to interact with customers and always say thank you for coming in. There are only a few tables for dine in so I suggest going earlier in the evening before the crowd hits. Street metered parking is limited but we've never had a problem. Excellent presentation. First impressions are clean, casual, and delicious. I ordered a rainbow roll and was a little scared at first when I saw the igloo cooler - but it worked out... Taste is king and the king is "in." I particularly like the rice, the pink ginger and the background music. Rice tastes fresh. I prefer the pink ginger over the yellow or white variety. We stopped here for lunch after reading all the positive reviews, and sadly, left very disappointed. The lunch specials were cheap-- I think around $7. I ordered the tofu teriyaki with rice. I was excited to read that they make their own teriyaki sauce, but I wasn't too impressed by it. I found it bland and boring. The tofu tasted like... well, tofu. haha. I think of it as a meat-substitute to soak up the goodness of spices and sauces, which in this case, not so much. We also ordered a spicy tuna roll ($6.50)- and YUCK. I didn't even want to eat it just by looking at it. The color was off and it wasn't fresh. I ate one piece because my partner asked me to, and it was gross. Not fresh at all. Not a good sign when you're consuming something raw. The service was friendly, although it was weird hearing our waitress banter with other workers in the back about personal issues.
