Last year, my hair fell into the wrong hands and I was left with disastrous result. I decided to get it fixed at Tom Brophy with Zoe. I'm the type of client who gives the hair stylist enough space and freedom to do what they want (which gets me into trouble). As much as I give them my trust, I expect them to be highly skilled artists. Before Zoe, I've gone great lengths to find the right person to trust but many have failed me over the years. Zoe saw my train wreck of a hair and somehow, she magically fixed it. I left feeling beautiful again. She understands hair. She understands what works for me and what doesn't. I just moved to LA recently and everyone knows finding a new salon in a new city is always tough. However, I really lucked out with Tom Brophy Salon! I got my first balayage highlights done by Shayna and a cut by Rena and both did a phenomenal job. I'm extremely picky when it comes to my hair and both stylists listened carefully to what I wanted and were very sweet. Unlike some other salons, Shayna was the one to apply all of my color, not the assistants, and she checked on me often during the process. My hair can be difficult to color and a few days after the appointment, the color started turning brassy, which was not Shayna's fault at all. However, I emailed her and she responded immediately and got me in the next day to tone it at no additional cost. Now it's perfect! So I really appreciate her taking the extra step to make sure I'm happy. As for Rena, she is a freaking haircut rockstar. I'm very low maintenance with my hair and she created a cut for me that is wash-and-go while still looking fun and fresh. I've gotten so many compliments on it and I love that it's so different from other cuts I've had in the past. Everyone at the salon was very nice and professional. Was looking for a place to take my sister to get her hair cut for her birthday and took a chance on Tom Brophy based on the yelp reviews- they did not disappoint!! I was very nervous because my sister was going from long hair to trying a new short hair style. From the moment we walked in we were warmly greeting. I was very impressed that they greeted my sister and called her by her first name. Her appointment was with Rex and he right away made her feel comfortable. Even Tom the owner came over to check in on my sister as they could all tell she was really nervous. Rex was amazing!! He started by cutting the 12+ inches off my sisters hair and placed in a bag as she intended to donate it to Locks of Love. He cut and styled her so flawlessly and showed her multiple ways to style her hair. I was actually was a bit jealous!! LOL I'm definitely going to book an appointment with Rex soon. After extensive research and scanning reviews, I decided to schedule an appointment at this highly spoken of salon in Beverly Hills. I have paid a visit to all of its neighboring salons and none of them quite match up to Tom Brophy Salon! Courtney, who gave me beautiful blonde highlights was very patient and professional. Her excellent personality mirrors her excellent work. Unlike most hair stylists, she carefully listened to what I wanted and asked a series of questions just to make sure I would be completely happy with the result. Rex, who gave me a blowout was also amazing. I didn't receive a cut from him, which I've heard are his specialty. However, I will definitely be returning in the near future to get one. Given that the salon is in Beverly Hills, I was worried that I was going to get attitude from the hair stylist about waiting so long in between haircuts, but my stylist (Lia) was friendly and professional and the whole overall vibe of salon was upscale but unpretentious. Haircuts start at $85 here, and you can put the tip on the credit card. The awesome front desk staff also recommended a free 2-hour parking lot a couple of blocks away on Brighton Way near Rodeo when I called to ask where the best place was to park. I'm super picky about my hair. Rex does a great job of listening to what kind of cut I want, and how I style my hair, etc. He takes a lot of factors into account and gives me EXACTLY what I want, and even makes really great suggestions (I.E, making the cut softer or layered or to take out some weight, etc) which ultimately makes the cut end up looking even better than I imagined. He's talented and has the best dance moves. How can you not trust him? :-P Christine does my color (Tom Brophy is departmentalized so you go to a stylist for your cut and colorist for your color, so since they focus in one department, you can be assured that they are masters of their craft) and she is amazing. She has done everything from color correction, to the most well blended ombre (I hate ombres that are blunt "dip dye" types, I like a nice gradation), to going from black to blonde, to highlights etc etc etc Whatever you want, she can do it, and she's also very honest, so if you want something that's going to fry your hair, she's up front about it and can give you better options. The last thing you want is to go to a colorist who will take you to the color you want, but it destroys your hair!! They run a tight ship right here. You're greeted by multiple people when you walk in, and served coffee, tea, or water. I love this salon! read more

I visited the salon in hopes of finding a new colorist. I was referred to Davin through Yelp. Everyone was lovely when I arrived, I was given a green tea - wonderful first impression. I talked with Davin about how the last colorist went way too light and I wanted the color to match my own. He brought out the book (oh, no!) with the hair samples (red flag). He then put a permenant hair color on my hair (w/peroxide). Looked good in the salon. After a few washes, my hair began to turn orange - Quelle Horror! After three weeks I was so upset I called Tom. He said come in. I really wanted to avoid this situation...very uncomfortable. I went in and sat in Davin's chair. He looked at my hair and said there's nothing wrong with it. I said, "it's orange, like rainbow colors. How would you correct this?" He said everyone has orange in their hair. I don't see anything wrong. I thanked him and got up to leave. As I walked out Tom asked, "Is everything alright?" "No". He followed me to the sidewalk and wanted to know why I didn't come back sooner? I said, "Because I wanted to avoid this awkward situation. I just want my money back so I can fix this color." Tom says, "Well that's NOT going to happen". And he was right. They didn't fix the problem or give me a refund. Not my kind of place. The problem with Davin, is he didn't take responsibility for the color disaster - peroxide oxidises. Real disappointing experience. read more

Lia is my fav! I've been seeing her since she was still in training (over two years) and I've never once had a cut I didn't love. I have really curly and unruly hair and she always gives me fantastic cuts. She is well versed in both wet and dry cutting. Usually she does a combination of both on my hair. When I'm done with my cut she blow dries, straightens, and styles my hair. Not only is Lia great with cuts, but she does fabulous a updo. She's such a sweetheart and makes a point to develop strong relationships with her clients. Once, she even taught me how to do soft waves with a straightening iron (because I'm so hair illiterate) and now all my friends ask me to style their hair on special occasions! She even offers free bang trims. I highly recommend seeing her. As a curly haired girl I've had some pretty awful cuts, but Lia makes my hair look on point every time. Other shout outs: Tom is so nice. He says "hi" to every customer that walks in the door. Christine is amazing with the Brazilian Blowouts and with color. She's always gives me that shiny sleek look I'm after and she's a total sweetheart. Minami is great with the phones and booking appointments. She is so nice. She will do her best to help you no matter what. When I walk into this salon I feel like I'm part of the family, which means a lot to me. Rex always asks me how I'm doing and how everything is going. Everyone takes a lot of care to make you feel at home. I love this salon. These guys work so hard to make every haircut a relaxing experience. Even the guy who does the shampoos does a great job. Decided to surprise her with a hair appointment for Mother's Day, as we have a three month old and she had been wanting to visit a salon for the past three months. (Something that's not so easy with a newborn) I did some Yelp searches for the best place and finally decided on a stylist named Rex at Tom Brophy's Salon. Everything looked professional, the reviews were exceptional and I liked that the people on the phones were cool when I called them. Making this appt for my fiance meant one of two things: 1) She would return home extremely happy and love me. 2) She would return home extremely frustrated and hate me. Fortunately, she came back extremely happy, loved her hair and the stylist. She even decided this is where she'll go in the future too. I decided on getting my hair cut here because 1) I met a woman with an amazing haircut by Rex and 2) because of the 5 star reviews on Yelp. Apparently, that's no guarantee that you, too, will get an amazing haircut here. I have not had a proper salon haircut in four years. I've been cutting it myself and occasionally getting the back trimmed in a salon, even though I get my hair colored professionally. I finally decided to get it cut here on an instinct, although I thought about it for a long time before I made the appt. Rex is lovely--as is everyone here--but I have to say, I haven't been this disappointed in a haircut in a very long time. I explained, to the best of my ability, what I wanted, stressing that I had a lot of natural curl in my hair--though it was blown out straight that day--and I wanted wash-and-wear hair: to get out of bed and out the door without laborious ministrations to look presentable. In all fairness, when I walked out of the salon, my hair did look great. However, in the four days since the cut, I've spent at least an hour to get my hair to do something, anything, that looks decent. Instead of wash-and-wear hair, I wake up with hospital hair that needs three products and an hour of blow drying before I can leave the house. Though I made it clear that I hate super short hair, what I got in the back was a duck butt. I wanted to keep the sides longer, but now the top is flat and the sides curl into a ridiculous, short bob. Instead of trying to clean up what I had going on, which is what I thought was going to happen, I got a radically different hairstyle I did not want: a choir boy bob with wings--and I was never a fan of The Flying Nun. Obviously, I'm one unhappy customer out of many who sing their praises. Had I seen one intelligent post by someone who did not get a haircut they loved, it might have colored my decision to come here. Although a bad haircut is not the end of the world, it is traumatizing, not to mention the $100+ spent on it. Every time I look in the mirror I feel that sharp, unhappy pang of wishing I could undo what's been done. I'm sure if I asked, they'd be happy to re-do it, but I've learned from experience that once burned, it's best not to return to scene of the crime. I'll return to my old salon and chalk it up to a bad decision while I wait for my hair to grow out. read more

Thank God I found a new salon. Ohhhh the drama us women face trying to get juuuuust the right colorist & stylist. I really want to refrain from bad talking my previous stylist but wow, what a difference makes shopping around. I was left with a mess from the "other salon" b/c she truly had no idea how to cut my hair. She had no idea how to thin out heavy hair on the top or deal with texturized hair. It was tragic and I was depressed and quite frankly desperate. The color she did was really brassy too yellow. It wasn't warm or complimentary to my skin tone all. My roots looked like a different shade every time. It was swatch selected. Anyhooo... I digress, I'll save that for the "other salon." I'm sure you're catching my drift here... So thankfully I hit Yelp and found Tom's salon. I called and Erika (such a doll with killer curls) was kind enough to suggest Shayna to do my color. Shayna was the first colorist to tell me I don't need a root touch up... I don't even need my roots colored since I'm a blonde already. Even though I was booked for roots and highlights... Shayna talked me into high & low lights and just did a bump up on my roots to blend everything. I was floored. It's the most natural looking blonde I have ever had done. It complimented my skin tone and looked great. Shayna really put the effort in and I put my faith in her expertise to help a desperate woman out. :) I felt so much better... Now, on to the cut. I booked with Tom specifically b/c I did research online to know that he truly appreciates curly hair. He was an artist with scissors. He knew how to keep my length, give me volume and take the weight out. Tom took the time to educate me on how to care for my hair and also he taught me about color and how it shouldn't really be selected from a swatch board but it should be determined by skin color, eyes and eyebrows. Very interesting. It was my first experience with a stylist that took their time and seemed to truly respect curls. It's rare to find curl love these days since everyone desired poker straight hair. I walked out feeling sassy and so much more like myself. I didn't realize how depressed I was from my previous bad experience at that "other salon" until I got my head overhauled (so to speak) at Tom Brophy's. Oh gosh, I almost forgot to mention the cost. While the haircut was on average of a woman's haircut. (absolutely worth it) My color was half of what I paid for over at the "other salon." What a pleasant surprise. Rex is hyper...and fantastic for a hair cutter...He is great and smiles alot and talks alot. He wants and wants to please his client. He did an amazing job with my hair cut. I've been coming to Tom Brophy for about a year now and this review is so long overdue. The salon as a whole is so tranquil- everyone is so friendly, helpful and genuinely just wants to you enjoy your experience. Christine has been doing my color since I moved to LA and there's not even words to describe her. If you bring her a picture of your dream color she will nail it. I have so many memories of bringing colorists pictures and it always turns out close, but not really what I was envisioning. Most of the time I've never seen the techniques she uses- she has so much knowledge that it's incredibly comforting. I've been having her do my balayage color for a while now, which I absolutely loved- It was beautiful and low maintenance, but recently I wanted to make a huge change by going dark. I immediately fell in love with it and I can't even thank Christine enough for the beautiful job she did. For a while I was going back and forth to San Francisco to get my haircuts at the hair salon I used to work at, until Adrian was recommended to me. He's young, fun, educated, and up on all the trends. He recently gave me the very cool midi cut/clavicut/whatever you want to call it. He customized it a little bit for me and how I like to wear my hair and I absolutely love it. It's hard to find someone you really enjoy seeing, but every time I see him I leave so happy- he knows exactly what I'm talking about and makes it look awesome. Bottom line is, it's really hard to find people you trust with your hair, and with Adrian and Christine I absolutely love putting my hair in their hands because I know I'll always love it. read more

Talk about a hair cut that keeps on giving! Zoe was in charge of taking a mane of hair that went down to my mid-back, frizzed out and looked plain sloppy, and transforming it into a 'do that would speak louder than words. The Before: I've gotten great cuts before, but my main criticism has always been that the hair I walk out of the salon with is never what happens when I try to style it myself. I don't want to curl my hair or blow dry for 45 minutes every day. The cuts have been conventional, haven't fit my long, rectangular face shape. I was wearing pony tails ALL the time. The hair situation was giving me despair, to be frank. What I told her: I gave her a range of celebrity photos, and we actually discussed what would work and what wouldn't. I explained to her that I wanted something interesting but still on the cusp of conservative, something that would draw attention on a stage without inspiring fear into the hearts of parents at a religious school. I was not very specific. I trusted the good reviews on yelp and crossed my fingers. The After: Zoe came up with THE. BEST. HAIRSTYLE. I've ever worn. It's a hair solution! Sleek, modern, subtly asymmetrical for a bit of spice (that was Zoe's idea - brilliant), she gave me a long bob with layers that suited the texture of my hair and the shape of my face, neck and shoulders. I only need to flip my hair over after the shower and blowdry for 15 minutes and the result is adorable, professional, but interesting. The best part? It cost me $80. I was paying the same amount before to much less qualified hair professionals. The cut has paid off - I have gotten so much unexpected positive feedback for this cut. The length has made it easier to do interesting styles, but above all, the specific shape that Zoe styled seems to complement my features no matter how much effort I put into it. Jennifer has the only two hands that have cut my hair for the past 27 years since she rescued me from a horrible boy cut so if that doesn't say something I'm not sure what would! Now she finally has her very own salon (I've followed her to 4 or 5) with her amazing partner Tom! I also do my coloring with Davin and I've yet to met someone who's first guess was that it was anything but natural. Tom Brophy has a clean, peaceful, cool aesthetic and is perfectly unpretentious, which is really refreshing for a Beverly Hills establishment... all of the employees are really down to earth and invested in their clients and the business because they have an excellent mentoring/training program for young stylists, which is wonderful! I used to go to Rena to cut my long curly hair to a better version of what it was. Since she was gone, I tried Rex. I asked for my long hair, which was half way down my back, to be cut to my shoulder blades length. I explained I have a baby and don't have time to blow dry my hair most days and need something I can put in a pony tail. The haircut I ended up barely grazed my shoulders - when blown dried straight. It did look nice, but it was not what I wanted at all. Now I'm left with a curly gum ball that I need to straighten myself. For a stylist who has been at this job for over 10 years and charges $100 per cut, I would have expected him to have enough experience to know how to cut hair to the right length. I'm disappointed. So I wanted to try a different salon in a way off location from my home. Yelp directed me to Tom Brophy and I knew I wanted my hair cut by Rex. I should have been more prepared but on a whim I called at 9:20 am and they were able to fit me in at 10am. Little did I know, traffic and my horrible sense of direction, I would show up 30 minutes late which I never do. Anyway, everyone was so nice and welcoming. Rex decided to look at my hair and see if he can work it out. His next clients were nice enough to come a little later and he fit me in. Thank you for being so patient with me and I promise to never be late again. Onto the haircut, my hair is very straight and Rex was able to make it look nice and healthy and beautiful. He suggested that I keep it simple but still stylish enough for me to manage without doing anything to it since I'm a busy mother of 2. He has such a cute and wonderful personality that I loved listening to him talk. I might consider having my hair cut more than just twice a year. Only downfall is that the parking sucks. Next time when I'm not in a hurry, I'll search for a better spot. Oh and Tom came to introduce himself and was so nice. Clean and spacious salon. And very competitively priced; especially when you take into account that it's in BH. I've been twice in the last 4 months and the owner has been there each time and greeted me with a smile and a "how are you today?" each time. There's no bitchy/stuffy personalities here! I had a gift certificate from my mom for a haircut with Lia. I had recently cut my hair into an edgy angled bob somewhere else and was not happy with the overall cut. I really lucked out. When I first moved to LA, I had no idea where I could go to get a great cut and color but as luck would have it, I discovered Rex and Michelle at Tom Brophy. I love this salon!! Every time I go, the staff is so friendly and accommodating and I feel welcome from the moment I go in. Tom himself is always there (a very classy guy) and always greets me personally - I appreciate that! Rex cuts my hair and always does an amazing job. I am not a hair person (I can barely blow-dry and style my own hair) but somehow he makes my hair look great when all I say is, "Don't cut it shorter any than my shoulders," or, "I want to try something shorter." Once, a girl at my gym asked me who cuts my hair - and then she became a new regular customer for Rex! Michelle is great for color. I've never been one to do a whole lot in terms of color but I do like to get some natural-looking highlights once in a while. Michelle always knows what to do (I never know how I want my hair to look beforehand but she always talks it over with me and figures something out to best suit my look). I hear she does some great Brazilian blowouts too but I can't comment on them because I've never had one. I think it speaks a lot to Rex and Michelle's skill when I receive compliments from total strangers. Thanks for almost two years of great hair and more years to come! I just came back from this salon for the first time and I'm extremely satisfied with every aspect of the service! I had come here today after getting a horrible haircut elsewhere and was hoping someone at this salon could fix it after reading the great reviews. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by the reception desk with a friendly smile, water and the wifi password...can't get better than that! Rex saw me and he's really awesome. He's really nice and funny and totally laid back. Fixed my haircut and it looks AMAZING!!! One of the best cuts I've gotten, ever. I have to say that I am pleased with this journey!! When I move to LA it was hard for me to find good hair stylist, back home I used to go very often and to have the best service. Finally I have found it with lady Rrena and mr. Tom. Rrena is very passionate about her work, what you can feel after just once. She heard what I had in my mind and I heard her suggestion and result is amazing. I have to say that all other stylists are very nice too. You will fill like home. Enjoy!! read more

I've been going to Tom for about 15 years. I was referred by a friend of a friend. I've always been picky about my hair and my girlfriend told me about Tom and I've been hooked ever since. No matter what shape it is in when I go in, I walk out elated. I have fine, wavy hair and Tom always makes it look good. I was out of state for some time and once went a year between cuts as I couldn't bear for someone else to touch my hair. The one time I did (unavoidable) I was sorry. Tom fixed it and I was greatly relieved. Whenever I'm stuck on a project, I make a special trip into town to see him. I got my husband in with Tom and he loves him. His hair is thick and straight. Tom can do anything! Tom is truly the best. What he won't tell you is how highly trained he is and what a gem. Tom was trained at Sassoon in England and was Sassoon's art director. read more
