Anyone who knows me knows I love buffets. I'm gluttonous? If there's a line of food, I'm in it. So, I came to Tom Ham's Lighthouse ready to put in some serious fork work. The location, great. Ocean view, outdoor seating, kinda postcard worthy but time to talk about the grub. The selection is wide consisting of brunch staples, tri tip, pasta, fried chicken etc. BUT I came for the seafood, the glory, the treasure chest. Instead, what I got felt like the oceans leftovers. The crab legs? Not fresh and served cold. The meat stuck to the shell like they were welded in. Nothing like looking forward to a sweet bite of crab only to wrestle it like you're in a UFC match. The shrimp, oysters, scallops were also cold. And those scallops? Serving them icy was straight-up seafood abuse. Sundays here feel like Black Friday. Be prepared to shoulder your way to the buffet line unless you want to eat salad. Also several items were empty and had to wait a fairly long time. Service was fine and weren't the problem. My issue is that I walked in expecting a seafood paradise and walked out feeling like I just gnawed on a crab leg popsicle. Probably won't be back. Went for restaurant week. We luckily got a booth right by the window so we got to watch all the birds and boats go by while waiting for our food. Ceasar salad was amazing -- I loved the cheesy croutons! I would also recommend the salmon blt over the fish and chips. The breading on the fish got too soggy and was too thick for my liking. Absolutely incredible! From the views of surrounding water we were able to look out from our booth and take it all in. The place is very lively lots of people celebrating and dressed up. The food was absolutely delicious we went with the Raw menu which was extremely affordable and you can order by the piece or lb. Everything tasted fresh. The crab claws were a bit tricky but crab is crab. The scallops and oysters were the best! Our server was also AMAZING! he took great care of us and was super friendly. I have been going to Tom Ham's for about.... 8 years now? And it is truly my favorite spot to chill, have some great foods and cocktails, enjoy my husband's company and the view. I can't think of any one day where I felt I wasn't taken care of by the staff. It's a very well-managed staff and everyone always seem happy to be there. We love sitting at the bar. But they have a pretty big outdoor area for those who love to enjoy some ocean air. The water is right there. At night, San Diego Downtown reminds me of live wallpapers. I had some of the freshest oysters there. I'm not going to say what my record was but just know, you CAN have too many oysters lol Though I prefer fresh oysters, I remember enjoying their fried oysters as well. They are creamy and coated just enough with very well-seasoned batter. One of my husband's favorites is their Loaded Hummus. I don't particularly like hummus in general, but I love theirs. It doesn't taste very bean-y, which I like very much. I take home their house made pita bread every time because it reminds me of savory pancakes. Their chicken lollipops are one my favorite things to get there. It's one of those things you just have to try. Also, I once dipped them in their tartar sauce and WOW. Maybe not for everyone, but if you're feeling adventurous, try it! Their mussels, deglazed in stout and all that, are what I compare all other restaurant's steamed mussels to. This is the place to visit if you want to enjoy the San Diego skyline with some sun. We ordered their fried chicken sandwich, bbq burger, and regular burger. I tried all 3 and all were equally great + a good portion. My personal favorite is the friend chicken sandwich and the sauce on it gives it that special flavor. The fries nicely crispy and the salad is fresh. We celebrated a birthday and were given a brownie with ice cream as a sweet surprise. It was sooo good!! Overall this place deserves the 5 stars. For how much the brunch is you would expect everything to be good. We came for a belated Mother's Day brunch today and the lobster claws taste as if they were previously frozen. They were rubbery, the eggs Benedict was not runny at all. I let thr manager know of this and she said she hadn't heard anything from anyone else. We also had the olives and almonds delicious Then we were seated- no acknowledgment of my parents special day. We ordered and my parents shared the crispy fish which was excellent. My husband had the scallops which 4 scallops and not very large ones at that were okay. Ate here about a month ago but it was a super nice experience. Originally we were sat inside for our reservation, but the rowdiness of the tables behind us were a bit too much and our waiter was happy to move us outside which we were so thankful for! Once we moved outside, they got us a heater and we were able to enjoy the city lights across the water (I recommend going at sunset). The food was also fantastic. The ceviche was so yummy and great portions sizes. We also got the mussels which were fantastic and seasoned super well. My dish from what I remember was some sort of beer braised beef and the beef was so tender and juicy. The mash potatoes were honestly to die for and would come back for them haha. The last item were the brussels sprouts. My girlfriend comes here for special occasions solely because of these brussels sprouts and they were absolutely delicious. We went here for my birthday and they provided a free dessert which was so nice of them. It was a bit interesting to see that the dress code wasn't as fancy as we thought, as we saw people in hoodies etc. Overall I enjoyed the dinner and ambiance, 8/10! read more

We had the following items: Calamari Charcuterie Board Chicken with risotto Scallops Calamari and charcuterie board were great and held us over until our meal came. Our friends invited us to join them for dinner and a great view of the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. Tables near the windows provide a spectacular view of the bay and city skyline. It's a little noisy, but not any more than at other restaurants, especially during the holidays. I had a salad with mixed greens and added some perfectly grilled salmon. Could've used a bit more seasoning, but because it was well-cooked, I couldn't complain. We also got a side of brussels sprouts, which had a maple glaze instead of balsamic. It was surprisingly good. We go to San-Diego, maybe 4 times a year. We stop in here because our friend who lives here is a regular. Very nice restaurant and view. The problem is when the bill comes and there is a surcharge for their help. First of all we always tip 20%or more. We were seated outside with a great view as well as a heater next to us to keep us warm. The menu offers plenty of good appetizers, salads, soups and entrees. We started with the raw oysters, fried oysters, and roasted cauliflower. All three appetizers were a nice size portion and tasted great. Our high school reunion committee did an excellent job securing Tom Ham's Lighthouse for our 30th year reunion on Friday August 8,2025. I was part of our school's 20th year reunion committee. Those that know finding a venue along with what a ticket will provide attendees- will make or break the outcome and fruits of your labor. Although the economy has changed, price wise- 10 years ago- it was a good turnout for us. *Our 20th year reunion was in downtown San Diego (rooftop bar) Reunion attendees checked in at the table near main entrance and gathered upstairs for social hour (6-7pm). It was my first time ever at Tom Ham's and the clear summer evening skies are the reminder why this was the venue of choice. I came in screaming and hollerin classmate names! Some it's been 20 years and others- 30 years! It was great to see my energy was matched. LOL Wait staff (upstairs) was always enough to take group pictures. I know I was loud and excited to see everyone's faces. When it was time to herd us downstairs to our event space- guests were welcomed to mingle inside or take advantage of our reserved balcony outside the dining area. We had 105 attendees and there was plenty of wiggle room to walk around the 10 top tables. In the far corner, was a table set aside for our fruit and cheese platter. Fresh mixed assorted berries. Strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Sliced Gouda and Swiss. Salted pistachios and honey on the side. Another platter of water crackers. Staff walked around with mini chicken (curry?) skewers. Seemed a bit dry. And drizzled with Tahini (?). Some of us bee lined to the bar area and the Asian bartender on shift- had ZERO people skills. While I was waiting in line for my order- all the way til I ordered and throughout the night- he didn't greet anyone with a smile. He was the definition of deadpan. Thank goodness his coworker, the taller fella brought the energy. Because I know we were a good bunch of folk to be around. Heck- even our DJ was playing the jams from the 90s!! Dinner menu/ buffet style: *Lobster Bisque (at first- looked like cheese sauce). Not sure if it was served in a warmer? It was good. *Lighthouse Salad- baby greens, Granny Smith slices, shaved carrots, aged red wine vinaigrette. *THIS was my favorite salad! I was raving to others in the buffet line that The Joint in Ocean Beach has a sushi roll called Granny Grinds (with Granny Smith apples & salmon)! *Mediterranean Salad- Romaine lettuce, Kalamata olives, tomato, crispy garbanzos, red onions, feta, & Izabella dressing. *Did not try this one. *Herbed & garlic whipped Gold potatoes. *Yes, yes, YES!! So buttery and definitely not instant. *Oven Roasted Veggies *Oven Roasted Atlantic Salmon w/ sauce vierge *Herb & Dijon crusted chicken breast, pan jus *Chicken breast really isn't my go to. I dabbled with smaller servings from this dish. Scooped that creamy pan just and topped it on my Lighthouse Salad. Since the Lighthouse Salad had a thin coating of the aged red wine vinaigrette- it was perfect. Carving station: *Spiced Rub tri tip w/ natural jus. *The carver placed a slice waiting for the next person in line (me) and it already looked over cooked/ dry. I scooped a bit of the natural jus onto the tri tip- hoping it's help a bit. It really didn't. The spices were good. I forgot what the tiny desserts were. Cigarette smoking is frowned upon at the downstairs balcony. But, welcomed out front by the main entrance. Decent sized parking lot. read more

We also had a cocktail each $12-15 not bad at all. The drinks were actually really good. Our favorite dish is salmon. It was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. The crudo, on the other hand, was a letdown. The tuna looked and tasted like something you'd grab from a basic supermarket. Not what I expected at all. Would I come back? This always seems to be the case when you go to a restaurant for fine dining with gorgeous views. I ordered the salmon. I told my husband it was utterly tasteless. It just felt like eating warm food with a hint of sun-dried tomatoes. I originally wanted to get the scallops but when I asked about making substitutions the waiter said simple changes might be made but if it was too difficult to do they would add an extra charge. With the prices already so high I was scared to order a dish with any changes. But please know we did enjoy our waiter who was delightful and very attentive.
