We decided to try Shorebird after seeing so many stellar five-star reviews on Yelp, so we went in with pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, our experience didn't quite live up to the hype. First, the positives: the location is great, the restaurant itself is really cute and aesthetically pleasing, and the hostesses were absolute darlings, friendly, helpful, and welcoming. I wish the rest of our experience had matched that first impression. Once we were seated, the service was pretty disappointing. Our waiter came across a little arrogant and almost as though he was too busy to really give us his attention. Ironically, after nearly dropping our drinks when bringing them over, he seemed a little more personable afterward. Still, we were rarely checked on throughout the meal. No real "How is everything?" or checking to see if we needed another drink, anything else, or eventually the check, just the basic things you normally expect when dining out. So, if you're looking for a date-night spot where you can have a completely uninterrupted conversation, this might actually be perfect because you probably won't be interrupted at all. But if you appreciate attentive service and an occasional check-in, our experience definitely fell short. The food unfortunately didn't make up for the service either. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't memorable or something we'd go back for. My fiancé wasn't impressed with his steak but decided to just eat it rather than send it back. We also noticed the table behind us send an entire burger back because it apparently wasn't prepared to their liking, so it seemed we weren't the only ones underwhelmed with the food. Overall, I can understand the appeal of Shorebird for the location and atmosphere, but based on our experience, the food and service just weren't at the level we expected after reading all of the glowing reviews. San Diego has so many great places to eat that next time, we'd probably choose to try somewhere else. read more

Our server Lily was quite attentive to us ladies for our lovely Tuesday afternoon. We had a clear eye-level view of the stunning Coronado Bridge from our table. The Swordfish Sandwich was cooked perfectly, juicy & tender and the Key Lime Pie was the perfect complement to finish our meal. Such a refreshing and delightful sweet ending to our dining experience. Happy August! Shorbird at Seaport Village They do walk-ins and take reservations. Have tables for small groups or up to 6 at 1 table. We came here for a team lunch and they got our whole group of 15 on 3 different tables. We pre-reserved and thankfully heard back quickly from their leadership to get it reserved. We were in the back area (inside) but right by the water and it was a nice view. We had a screaming toddler in the same area so that was a little intense to hear the echos as we were trying to enjoy our time. Not the restaurants fault but definitely started off the experience a little stressful. The food was really good. Expensive though but for the most part, it was worth it. The service was good as well, our server Zeus was quick and met our needs to get out within an hour so we could get to our next destination. The appetizers were incredible! Our table shared the avocado tempura fries, rock shrimp and deviled eggs. All were incredible! I got the egg white frittata, it was pretty good but a little on the basic side even with the cheese added We shared the hot cakes and they were a little underwhelming. A few guys on our table for the wagyu burger and enjoyed them. And another got the crab egg Benedict. We started with the tuna tataki, and it was absolutely amazing. The tuna was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. For our entrées, we had the ribeye and the sea bass with risotto. The ribeye was cooked to perfection! It was tender, flavorful, and seasoned just right. The whipped potatoes were perfectly fluffy and seasoned as well. The sea bass was to die for, and the creamy risotto paired with it beautifully. Every bite was delicious. The food, stunning views, and relaxing ambiance made for such a great dining experience. The service was just as enjoyable. I was also a little surprised at the prices but I understand that everything costs more these days and you're smack in the middle of a tourist attraction. Service/Staff - 5 Stars I don't remember what our server's name was unfortunately, but he was really amazing. He was very attentive, friendly, offered to take our photos for us. Food - 5 Stars We started with the Tempura Rock Shrimp, which was really good! The Yuzu honey aioli dipping sauce was amazing. Loved this dish! My wife had the Chilean Seabass (which - side note - I always think is funny because FYI Chilean Seabass is not actually seabass. Look it up! It's actually a Patagonian toothfish!). Anyhow, it was amazing! I stole a few bites. I didn't get a photo of it, but it was a good portion and the fish was cooked perfectly. The risotto paired so well with the fish and had a ton of flavor. Highly recommend this dish! I had the Swordfish Sandwich. Everything about this sandwich was really really good. The fish was exactly how I expected it to be, meaty! Loved the brioche bun and the sauce. However, I would have preferred more sauce. If I were to order this again, I would see if they could give me some extra sauce. The sandwich came with French fries. I wasn't a big fan of the seasoning. The French fries tasted like bbq chips, and I don't like bbq chips lol. I somehow didn't notice that on the menu it actually says "BBQ spiced", and had I saw that I would have just asked for the fries without the seasoning. But, they were still cooked well and so if you like bbq flavor chips then you will love these fries. For dessert we got the chocolate brownie. It was AMAZING. The brownie was soft, moist, and very rich in flavor. I would totally get this again - and next time I would ask for extra ice cream. Especially if you're planning on sharing this with someone, an extra scoop of ice cream would be good. View - 5 Stars Epic view truly. Obviously a big reason why many people including ourselves come here. We wanted the view for our date night, and it really did not disappoint. We had dinner around 7pm so we got to see the sunset which made it even more romantic. TIPS: There was a pretty big parking lot, but we still took an uber here instead. It was our first time and didn't know what to expect. Also, Seaport Village closes up at 9pm, so if you're planning on walking around the village after your dinner, make sure you plan your dinner time accordingly. Definitely make reservations ahead of time. When we arrived, they were turning people away that didn't have reservations. Fortunately for us, we did! :) If you plan on going later in the evening and sit on the balcony, it's semi-indoors. Basically it's outdoors, but covered, and it got pretty cold for me. Served 3 appetizers, TEMPURA ROCK SHRIMP, HOKKAIDO SCALLOPS, and CRAB CAKES. All three delicious, and I adored the latter two. Such a cool spot to have lunch. This was my first time but it won't be my last. The upstairs dining is awesome and gives you a great view of ocean. Absolutely beautiful. Lets get into it. Food: We had a few options like always. I mean why not right! We started with * Tempura Rock Shrimp - this was crazy good. I did not expect the flavors to punch me in the mouth like it did. Crispy, light batter, the glaze and toppings really made it a phenomenal appetizer. I would highly recommend this dish. It is small in quantity but if feeds 2 people easily. * Crab Cakes - the crab cakes are good they do have a nice crispy texture on the outside but the inside is tender and packed with your normal Crab Cakes flavors. Not a bad choice. It was fresh and the portions are above average. * Balboa Rolll - somehow this roll with so many different flavors and textures went so well together. Cuddos to the chef for this one. The scallions on top changed the entire roll. I really loved this one. Would definitely order it again. Portion size was larger than the average roll. * Overstuffed Bacon & Eggs - this one was crazy!! It's literally a tower of deviled egg yoke with bacon, bits of celery and paprika on top. This was my least favorite only because the amount of yoke compared to the actual egg you get didn't add up. Once the egg is gone you're left with a mountain of egg yoke. It's way to much for my taste. The yoke also seemed a little dry and pasty. For deviled egg lovers this is a dream come true. * Skirt Steak & Eggs - wife said it was really good and the red chimichiri complimented the steak just right. The portions were large, the steak was juicy and cooked perfecrly to her request. With skillet fried smahed potatoes and toasted buttered bread. Very good option for steak lovers. Service: The staff was great from the check-in booth to the waiter everyone did such a great job and was so polite. I couldn't help notice that everyone was smiling and super helpful. This is a great team working at that restaurant. Bar tenders were on top of drinks which was nice to get your drink shortly after ordering. Atmosphere: It's an ocean side restaurant or should I say on the ocean restaurant with wall to wall windows showing the ocean and the beautiful San Diego landscape. Really enjoyed the area and activities. Price: The appitizers were above average prices but hey!! Totally worth it. It ranged from $16-$30 per dish, its really not too bad for the quality of food and service. Location: It's located in Seaport Village which has so many different places to try and plenty of businesses to walk and find some really cool things. I hope the business updates online info, and considers extending the hours, we were there before 6PM. We ordered a couple drinks as we were trying out different spots. I still got the Passion Fruit Martini and it was good, my friend ordered the Scratch Margarita and was not impressed. A bit too much yellow for me but once I scraped some off, they were so yummy. Caesar salad- we shared this and it was a perfect size. The fresh anchovies were delicious. Shorebird opened on the seaport this past August. Ambiance: the restaurant is located over the bay and has great waterfront views. The evening views are limited at this time of year, so I'd more recommend going for brunch or lunch for bayfront views. The hostess recommended we sit upstairs, which I thought was a poor recommendation. Upstairs is warmer, but views aren't as great since the downstairs has floor to ceiling windows. I wished we sat downstairs. There is also a small bar upstairs. I didn't get a great view of the downstairs. Service: Service was ok. Server didn't check on us often and left quickly when we would try to order additional things. Drinks: They don't have any beer on tap, only bottles. I ordered the passion fruit drop cocktail and it was really delicious. Food: Food was ok and overpriced. Dining at Shorebird was a positive experience. Love that the restaurant is right on the water and had huge windows as to not block the gorgeous view. It could get really bright (and hot) at around 12-3pm but that's the price you pay for living in Sunny San Diego! Our waiter was nice & attentive as well as the other employees we came in contact with. The menu had a lot of different choices, but not too much where you can hardly decide. Nice mix of everything. We opted for the crab cakes as a starter which came w/2 medium sized cakes & veggies. Really good choice! Got the avocado mushroom omelette (vegetarian option) which was delicious and oh so fresh. Definitely enough to share as it did come with potatoes & 2 pcs of sourdough toast. We also got the souffle pancakes which came w/3 stacks. This was kind of disappointing cause we've had souffle pancakes before and this was not it. Not to say the pancakes weren't good, it was just not souffle. Another reason to knock down the review a few points is cause they charged $53.00 a bottle for a $17.00 champagne bottle... Yes we still ordered it, but man that's highway robbery.
