Recently ordered takeout from Tommy Tamale and the entire process went very smoothly. There were big signs posted on their windows with instructions on how to place an order for curbside pickup. An employee came out with gloves to take my method of payment once I placed my order, and then a few minutes later, another person came out, with gloves on again, with my food. The employees were both very kind and cautious to minimize contact with me. Their food was also delicious! My parents and I loved their mild and spicy pork tamales, and the chicken ones were phenomenal as well. Their rice and spicy beans were perfectly seasoned. If you go to the Grapevine store you might meet Tommy himself. I've always heard fantastic things about the Grapevine location and have had that location bookmarked forever. A couple of weeks ago I saw them on UberEats and went for it. At first I was disappointed to realize this was the second location, but there was no reason to be... it was great! I ordered the Tommy Bowl which comes with 1 tamale for $6 or 2 tamales for $8. The Tommy Bowl comes with rice, queso, chili, tamales, cheese and pico de gallo. The first time I ordered the bowl with no pico and one pork tamale. The pork tamale was definitely the best thing about the meal! The second time I got the 2 tamale bowl with one chicken and one beef. They were good, but the pork is definitely my favorite! Item of note, with two tamales the bowl is heavy and it's a little harder to mix everything up. I was astounded by how dense the bowl felt so I took it over to the mailing scale- 2.1 pounds! My original thought was that the 2 tamale bowl was the way to go because there was plenty of everything else left over to go with a second tamale. However, I have a smaller appetite, I'm more of a grazer, so the 2 tamale bowl was actually wasted on me because I can't eat that much heavy food in one sitting. If you have a big appetite, this is a good fit. That being said, the price for the portion is more than reasonable and their menu overall seems to be reasonably priced. The tamales are a little on the short side but it must be an optical illusion because they were stuffed. Tamales to go are $7.50 for 1/2 dozen and $13 for a dozen. They also have a tamale plate, a tamale pie, burritos, quesadillas and nachos on the menu. They offer chicken, beef, pork and non meat options, including spicier versions like hatch chili or habanero. I was super excited to see they have sweet options like apple cinnamon, chocolate and pumpkin, which I think is seasonal. I want to try a sweet option in the future. I wish there was an option to sample a single dessert tamale, but alas there is not. This isn't exactly on my route, so I plan to go out of my way to get over there and take advantage of their tamales. I either need to get a few half dozen hot tamales (including a dessert one) to share at work or get some frozen ones to bring home. If you enjoy the Americanized Tex-Mex flavors, then this place is for you. The tamales themselves are somewhat small and in my opinion, the filling is a bit dry and the meat needs more sauce. So why didn't anyone tell me about this place??? Everyone told me about Rosa's and Dallas Tortilla & Tamales Factory but to me this place has them beat. The overall offering of different fillings in the Tamales and just the overall taste is amazing. I believe this is their 2nd location and not the original but that shouldn't stop you. When you walk in the seating is to your right and there is a dividing wall directing you to the cashier to place your order. The cashier was super friendly and answered any questions I had. They have multiple tamales to pick from and they have some traditional offerings like Burritos and Quesadillas so you don't have to only do Tamales. But why would you not eat tamales?? I got the small Tommy Bowl (sorry for no pictures this time) and also ordered 2 dozen of assorted tamales to go. The Tommy Bowl was pretty good my only compliant is that it was a bit heavy to me. Just a little too much cheese and chili with a little bit of rice and only one tamale (from what I could tell) in the small bowl. So given the depth of the bowl it became just a bit much of the non-essentials (give me tamales!!!). However, this could be just because I got the small as the pictures for the large look to be more portioned out evenly. I also waited to write this because I wanted to try their to-go tamales. I got the Habanero Pork, regular Chicken, and regular beef. I cooked a pack of each (they come with 6 in each pack). Y'all!! Every. Single. One. Was. Amazing. A lot of times with frozen food it's never as good as the original fresh ones but these were. You could taste the love put into them. They give you directions on how to reheat them and I did the boiling water and not the microwave in case you're wondering. It was super easy and you really can't get it wrong. Overall I highly recommend this place. I only wish I lived closer to it so I didn't have to drive so far but that won't stop me from going back. I've been patronizing Tommy Tamale for many years, at their original W Northwest Highway location in Grapevine. For the longest, you couldn't eat there, you could simply purchase packages of Tamales and a few choice condiments. They finally expanded to offer both a second location, a menu of food for consumption on premise, and the accompanying staff required to run such an operation. The Tamales were always among the better varieties you could get in the area, though Central Market has some that offer fierce competition. My favorite items here, outside of the Tamales, are the Quesadilla (specifically the gargantuan portion) and the Tamale Pie. To my knowledge only Grapevine is BYOB, so you can plan a very pennywise outing with excellent craft beer or fine wines such as a German Kabinett, Alsatian Crémant, or a Douro red wine (such as a 2016 Quinta das Carvalhas Reserva) to accompany any beef items. I would like to see the Coppell branch append itself to Grapevine's BYOB policy, if it hasn't already. Service here is scant, but this eliminates the need for standard gratuity, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Like everything else in the area, the weekday lunch hour makes the dining area thronged so plan accordingly. read more

Thought I would give Tommy Tamales a shot since it already had some decent reviews. Well they were spot on. Tommy's doesn't just have tamales, they have Nachos, Quesadillas, Grilled Burritos, Bowls, Tamale pie and even a couple of desserts as well. Atmosphere is cozy and it's just a little small place but those are the places I love. They even have a cooler of Mexican cokes should you want that sort of thing. I had the quesadilla (chicken) with a beef and pork tamale. All was delicious and typical to a texmex restaurant. Their sauces were all good. Green sauce was tangy while the red sauce had slight punch to it. This won't be the last time I try Tommys. I hope to come back and get my fill should I have a crave of decent TexMex grub.
