I can't drive by this place anymore without instantly having a hankering for their Tommy Bowl. Which is probably a couple days worth of calories in itself. But you know what?! It is super WORTH IT! Tamales drowning in chili, cheese and pico. It is like tamales and some sort of decadent queso chili dip had a baby. Let me tell you - you will have more than enough leftovers. Their just regular tamales are quite amazing as well. This time of year when it gets chilly I always want some tamales to warm up my soul and it does the trick for sure. There are also vegetarian options but I love the chicken and beef ones. Plus they have some of the best salsas and hot sauces around!! Boy do I miss seeing them at all of the Grapevine festivals pre COVID! You could go out there and sample all of the their lovely gourmet salsas. One day we will see the festivals again. This is probably my number one spot for awesome down to earth comfort food. The Tamale pie is my go to dish, Fritos, chili, cheese, with habanero pork tamales that add a little kick to the overall dish. Whether you're a local or close to the airport you can't miss a stop at Tommy Tamales. The original location is in Grapevine and if you haven't met the owner and his wife, it's definitely worth a stop in Grapevine to meet some of the kindest locals you'll ever meet (they spend most their time at the Grapevine location). Eric is the manager at the Coppell location and seems like a great guy, will definitely start coming to this location more as it is closer to home. I was a faithful customer since they opened. I'm Latino and enjoyed the tamales because they were close enough to what I can make myself but this way I don't have to cook for three hours. I'd always buy frozen to keep when I wanted tamales and at the time it was very affordable. I just recently went back after the pandemic shut down to restock my freezer but know, they cost $14.99.... Oh heck no. Plus the tamales are very thin. I realize this is a business and they need to earn a profit but nope. I'm not going to spend that much on tamales that I can get elsewhere like Mexican grocery stores or restaurants that are quite authentic and don't cost an arm and a leg. I will say that their chili con carne is outstanding, if anything I'll just go get a side of that only. read more

So annoyed. Stood in line for 15-20 mins for hot food to come to the counter and they said there are no hot tamales available. Before I walked in, I'm sure I read the sign and it read "Tamale" on the front -- it's like going to a steakhouse and they run out of steaks. Not that I'm an iron chef or anything, but last I checked you can make cold tamales (which people were lining up to buy) hot by using the microwave or sticking them in the steamer. SMH. Maybe they preferred to only sell cold tamales and didn't want to deal with eat in customers. A courtesy announcement or sign on the door would have been helpful, as I was waiting in line it appeared that many patrons had received HOT food. Not everyone waiting in line was getting cold tamales. Such a shame because I was looking forward to trying their tamale. I think they could have handled this situation much better. Unfortunately, the guy, who appeared to be a manager, wasn't even apologetic about it and was much more eager to serve the NEXT customer. Oh, wells. We won't be back. read more

We went to Tommy Tamale's when the opened their first store in Grapevine, TX. Tommy started by selling tamales at the Grapevine Farmer's Market and turned his love into a restaurant. I frequent the one in Coppell now, right next to Flower Mound. If you frequent the one in Grapevine, it is not unlikely you run into Tommy, who is welcoming and friendly The restaurants have a clean, simple decoration. Not fancy, but focused on the food. Each one also includes a "store" that sells chips, salsas/sauces, seasonings, etc. They also sell frozen tamales to go. I've tried almost all of them. Our favorites are the cheese & jalapeno (mild), and the habanero pork. These are great meals at home to heat up in a microwave in a matter of minutes. For ready-to-eat food, I love the Tommy Bowl. This is mexican rice, chili, cheese and choice of tamale. There is a "small" 1 tamale size and a "large" two tamale size. My favorite tamale in the bowl is the habanero pork. We also love their queso, quacamole, and refied bean sides. The prices are reasonable, and the food is good. I recommend. read more

Ive been in search for local tamale place-this is the one. Ordered hatch and habenero pork tamale bowls. They have two sizes. I bought the large size-they pack the bowls with chili, rice, 2 tamalas, pico de gallo, and queso. You'll def have leftover chili-great to finish off with their in house chips. Ordered the nachos-beef tamale. These are delicious and you can choose between queso or shredded cheese. They include a green cilantro, gaucamole style sauce. Its def got a kick. Ordered chocolate tamales-not bad but i feel i could taste the grit from the masa. Came with whipped cream, honey, and chocolate sauce on the side. They have other desserts in front of the checkout that I'd love to try next time. Where the have the drinks and condiments-they also have a market to buy texas specialty items-peanut butter brittle, salsas, etc. So unique! What was great was the customer service! I don't know why or how it took us this long to try this place out but so glad we finally did!! Their tamales and sides, we had their rice and refried beans and they were all perfect!! The hatch pork tamales had just the right amount of flavor and habanero tamales was pretty hot. I actually ended up stopping by the next day to stock up on some tamales for the busy weekday. YUM!! SUPER delicious. My husband and I are celebrating our first holidays in 7 years without his family...who apparently do tamales every year for Christmas. I can't make tamales. So I stumbled across Tommy Tamale in Coppell and we dropped in one day for dinner.....YUM. I loved the tomatillo chicken tamales. He loved the tamale bowl. We walked out with 4 dozen tamales *AND* some APPLE CINNAMON tamales to try!! The front counter guy was so sweet and took great care of us. Made the tamales today for our "Friendsmas" dinner and they were SUCH a good hit. And super easy to heat up. This is the ULTIMATE comfort food, and it's cheap, served up quick and large portions!! I got the Tommy Bowl- a delicious bowl of flavorful rice, chili con carne and chili con queso topped with spicy pico de Gallo with two tamales nestled in the middle! Every item in the bowl is delectable - the queso was the best queso sauce I've tasted - every item was full of flavor. I couldn't finish the large bowl, and ate the leftover for breakfast - it tasted even better the next day. They sell a variety of their tamales frozen in bulk, and I will purchase those as well. The beef tamale was a mildly spicy ground beef filled tamale. Good flavor and nice with the red salsa and some sour cream. The chicken tamale was ok but lacked a bit in the flavor department. I added some of their green salsa and kicked it up a bit. The service was really good - lots of smiles, thank you'd, followed up at the table and then came and cleared it for me. Tried this place out today and it did not disappoint! I tried the tamale bowl and my husband got a quesadilla. Portion sizes were more than ample- I wasn't even able to finish the small tamale bowl. i had been waiting and waiting for the new location to open, and i finally made it over yesterday. i was pleased to see that it wasn't a madhouse like i expected. it was cinco de mayo, after all. the restaurant is very clean and spacious. they were having a cinco de mayo special: buy 3, half dozen tamales and get one free. it was my first visit to the restaurant and i had lots of questions on ordering fresh vs frozen tamales. the staff was extremely helpful and they made sure that i was getting the best deal! i also got some salsa and pecan pralines for a friend who recently came to texas for the first time. i appreciated the time that the staff took to answer all of my questions and concerns. they also provided a card with the cooking instructions, which was super easy. the tamales were incredible! we got vegan (black bean/corn), hatch chile chicken and pork, and bbq. the avocado tomatillo salsa was really hot and flavorful, too! i'm definitely a fan and will be back to try many, many more flavors and dishes! read more

Eric helped guide me through the menu, the differences in what was fresh/frozen and made suggestions on what I should order as a first timer. I opted for the 4 tamale combo (black bean, chicken, pork, beef) with rice and charro beans and I really enjoyed the flavors. I ordered Uber Eats and ordered the black bean and cheese tamales. I was so sad to discover that I received black bean and corn (which wasn't an option...there was a black bean vegan tamale option. But it did not mention there was corn in it). I did open them and check for cheese since I ate one and found only corn with beans lol. I found them as on of 100 restaurants in the US you MUST try - not too shabby to say the least! And it holds up! I'm a huge tamale fan and seeing a local restaurant with main focus on tamales open is already a huge plus!!! I finally got to try this place today and was already blown away by just looking at the menu alone and being greeted by an extremely friendly cashier who explained the menu very well. The menu is SIMPLE and CLEAN looking- the restaurant allows you to either get frozen tamales to go or various specialized tamale entrees. What caught my eye was the tamale BOWL and Frito Pie. Yummy!!! I actually got the bowl to go - the bowl comes in two sizes so with one or two tamales but various other contents including rice, beans, and cheese. The flavors were explosive- loved it! The only thing downside for me with the bowl is the overflowing gooey-ness of it. That kind of gooey-ness seems to be more suited for nachos/Fritos. I was expecting to really taste the rice in my bowl except it was all lost inside a puddle of cheese and sauce. I think this dish would be really good with nachos on the side. BUT!! That is totally not a deal breaker because some people may actually like that and the flavors and not to mention the tamale itself were ON POINT. I will most definitely be coming back to try other entrees and may even purchase the frozen ones! Wow! I don't know why I've never eaten here. This place is so damn good! I've been craving a certain tamale texture, taste, and flavor for quite some time. So we ordered delivery. Even the best recommended homemade tamales as well as those sold fresh in big Latin American grocery stores lacked so much flavor or the masa to filling ratio was terribly uneven. Not at Tommy Tamale -- these were PERFECT! In every aspect. Size, filling, masa flavor and depth. I got the tamale bowl with two beef tamales. It's HUGE! We're both eating on it and it's packed with the BEST chili con carne and queso I've had in a really long time. My boyfriend got the tamale plate with two chicken, one pork, and one beef. He loved them! They went great with the beans and rice. Beans were DELICIOUS!!!! The only downside was we also ordered chips and salsa.
