In the City or the South Bay, I usually won't dine in a Chinese restaurant where there are NO Asian diners. Therefore, I was suspect about Tommy's Wok. But this is Marin, so I went with it. And that's exactly what Tommy's is ... clean, fresh, healthy Marin-style Chinese. My dinner date (thanks, M) declared the chicken salad "very clean", which is his way of saying "bland and tasteless". Dousing it in dressing did help, but it still seemed like it needed a little "kick" somehow ... some more flavorful vegetables, some marinade on the chicken, some spices. However, the fish special and Szechuan eggplant did not disappoint. Sauces were tasty but not overpowering. The orange roughy special included mushrooms and broccoli and had LOTS of whole cloves of garlic - at least one in every bite, but we treated them like bay leaves and pushed them to the side, and it was all good. We ate a disturbingly large amount of food at Tommy's Wok recently - a regular pan-regional feast of Chinese yum. It was all fantastic and the service was great - fast, friendly, courteous. Bonus points for the fact that our waiter was really concerned about whether or not our daughter should be in a highchair yet - he was pretty certain she shouldn't and I had to convince him she'd been in the exact same type of high chair many times. I really dig that he had her best interest at heart, even if he was a little off in knowing what she's accustomed to and capable of. Also, the wait staff, while bringing out plate after plate after plate for our 4 1/2 top (4 adults, 1 pee wee) were great about keeping a wide swath clear around the clutching paws of the little one who was eager to grab whatever was laid down within a 16-inch radius of her at the table. Finally, thanks, waitstaff, for not giving us the evil eye as my daughter blithely tossed Cheerio after Cheerio onto the floor like it was a sport going out of style. It's true - this isn't China-town / Clement street style "authentic" Chinese food, but that's how I like my Chinese food - predictable! It's pretty much been my experience with all regional foods (Mexican, Indian, Thai, Italian, American, French) that "authentic" is not as appealing to my palate. It usually lacks something in spice or creaminess or sauce because it hasn't been infused with the inventiveness of another culture's taste preferences, which broadens the appeal of the food. Like I said, there were 4.5 of us, all with varying foods that we like, and we all walked away (or were rolled, as was the case for the ".5") very satisfied. Will definitely be back... Be warned... if you don't like children, probably best to go there after 7 pm on a weekend night - the little ones dominated the tables at the early hour we were there (6:00). read more

This restaurant uses organic produce and meats. They mix their own sauces from scratch. You can easily taste the difference and FEEL the difference when you eat at Tommys! The female owner is so gracious and kind. Everything is delicious and carefully crafted. Best kept secret in Marin! Try their portobello mushroom and Bok Choy app - great for vegetarians or meat eaters. It's wonderful. We also love their delightful fish tanks, which kept my 3 year old busy during the meal, so mommy could finish eating. Great for families and moms! read more

The best Chinese food in Marin hands down! Yes, it's pricey, but you get quality & service. I can't believe I didn't rate my favorite Chinese restaurant sooner. Whenever I break down & eat some place else out of convenience (proximity), I am always disappointed. They use super fresh, organic ingredients, so if you're craving greasy msg-laden food, this isn't your restaurant. If you want the best of the best in all categories (NOODLE = Hong Kong style chow mein, SOUP = Wah Wonton, General's Chicken = POULTRY, Sizzling BEEF... there isn't anything on the menu that needs improvement), GO! The owner is female. (Yay girls!) The cool aquarium in the entrance keeps my eyes entertained while waiting for take-out or I can always watch the cooks prepare my meal through the full-length kitchen window. The beautiful orchids are always real & the bathroom is never dirty here. Whenever I've got out-of-town guests, they beg for a dinner from Tommy's Wok saying that no place does it like Tommy's. Thanks to Yelp, I decided to try this place for lunch today. Since it's been called the best chinese food in Marin, I had high expectations. For me, the best Chinese food I've been able to find in Marin so far is at the Dynasty in Tiburon http://www.yelp.com/biz/dynasty-restaurant-belvedere-tiburon Walking in, I was really impressed with their salt water aquarium; but, I came there for the food. I decided to order Combination Chow Mein with Pan Fried Noodles (Hong Kong style) for $11.90 (with tax). It came with an Egg Flower Soup that was tasty. Visually, the Chow Mein looked nice. However, I was really surprised to find that all the shrimp were old and tasted off (I'd guess they had been sitting around for at least a couple of days). I'd expect that in a poorly run asian restaurant on a Monday (where the shrimp had been sitting around since the weekend); however, not in a place that is considered the Best in Marin. I went here to celebrate my grandma's bday with the family and I was not impressed at all. My father has been telling me about this place for months now how amazing it it cause its all organic and what not.....not a fan at all. All the food that I purchase for my home is usually organic (my meat is ALWAYS organic) but I just don't see the good in a chinese restaurant being organic. It was not tasty at all. Hot and Sour Soup- tasteless, had too much black pepper, too much $$$ for the tiny portion Appetizer plate- nothing special, small portion for the money Garlic noodles with Shrimp- we got them with shrimp instead of lobster because the lobster here is gross! The noodles were nothing memorable at all. Just ramen style noodles tossed in some garlic even possibly garlic powder. Honey Walnut Prawns- totally not what I was expecting. They were just some prawns sauteed/glazed in a honey sauce and just very different. Tasted good but not what I expected. The service was bad as well. We asked at least 5 times for a beer, then 5 times AT LEAST for a wine opener and wine glasses, and then they charged us a corkage fee when we did not see it in the menu. Also we did not like hte wine that we brought (yes our fault) but we gave it to them yet they still charged us corkage fee. The lady was kind enough to take it off the bill but still. Also where do you see a corkage fee of $12?!?! Basically this place is not memorable at all, and would not drive out all the way to Sausalito for it again. read more

I have been going to Tommy's Wok for years now, and like an old shoe that's too comfortable to throw away, I keep coming back...even though I find it just...okay. The pros; Very fresh vegetables in their mixed veggies dish, and they always are very accommodating in adjusting the level of garlic for us. The egg rolls are super crispy, even after take out. Lemon chicken that is not too cloyingly sweet, with lots of tanginess. The cons; Kind of brusque service when busy. Rice is really inconsistent. Stopped in on a whim after a long day putting together desks and chairs for my work's new office. Expected it to be average Chinese food but cheaper than Feng Nian or Young Can Wok. We were pleasantly surprised on the food. In particular, the Sizzling Rice Soup (a favorite of mine since childhood) was absolutely delicious. We also had egg rolls and mu shu pork, which was also great. We had the house fried rice, which had perfect shrimp in it (a very light breading gave it some crispness without it being outright deep fried), but was otherwise nondescript. My main Chinese restaurant growing up was Jasmine down in the south bay (Los Gatos), and while much of their food has gone mediocre, they make some of the best fried rice I've ever had in anywhere. The rice itself is incredibly flavorful. Such was not the case at Tommy's; the rice was bland, mouthfuls flavored by whether you picked up some egg, bbq pork, shrimp, or chicken in it. But that was our biggest complaint on the food. The dishes were more expensive than expected-- probably only a dollar cheaper than Feng Nian across the street, but we haven't eaten there yet, so I don't know which of the two I'd recommend! All in all it was a very tasty, satisfying meal, and the bill wasn't huge, although it definitely wasn't cheap. (Where, oh WHERE is my ~$8-10 a dish decent Chinese food?! Do I really have to go to the city for it?) I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars, but decided to go with 4 only because there's no half-star option and I really wish they delivered! Anyway, I love this place. It's not greasy or heavy like most Chinese food, and contains really fresh ingredients. The prices are decent for the big portion sizes, and they are fast, polite, and the restaurant is very nice to dine in or get take-out. Love their fish tank and the glass "wall" looking into the kitchen. I love the mango chicken. Generous, well-trimmed pieces of chicken breast that are so tender they practically melt in your mouth (in a very good way). Sweet, large chunks of fresh mango is a sweet and fresh accent to the slightly spicy chili sauce. Order it with brown rice and it makes any bad day fabulous (add some white wine and it's PERFECT). I was hesitant to try this place because I'm not in to Chinese food that much. But boy am I into it now! This place probably has the best Chinese food I have ever had. They use quality ingredients and use responsible meats so you know you are getting the best. I love the orange chicken. Probably my favorite dish there. I live in San Francisco, which is no stranger to Chinese food, but many Chinese restaurants I've frequented are lit by blaring fluorescent lights and painted super white and the food has been just meh. Then I happened upon Tommy's while in Sausalito, and nothing compares. I drive over the bridge just to go there. Yeah, it's kind of situated in a parking lot/strip mall, but the decor and ambiance inside is lovely, and they have a nice line of bamboo hedges outside that sort of sets a boundary. The food is super tasty, not greasy, and you get white meat chicken in most dishes! I can't tell you the number of times I've been told "yes, white meat" and gotten the grossest most greasy and fatty dark meat. I guess it's white compared to beef, but yuk! The dog benefits from these meals bc I can only choke down so much of it. Also, my daughter has come with me a few times and once things we've both noted is that the service is so friiendly and polite. Our servers and the bussers are super nice. If you're tired of authentic low-to-mid-range San Francisco Chinese restaurants, and you want your white meat to be, well, white, and your food to be delicious (try the basil chicken, the paper-wrapped chicken, the lemon grass chicken, or hot and sour soup for sure) and served in a lovely atmosphere, it's worth the drive. There are some fine Chinese restaurants in the city, and some of the hole in the walls have excellent food, but Tommy's is my favorite wok. read more

Solid chinese food without being a greasy spoon. Prices are OK - neither sky-high nor a great deal. I'd say be prepared to spend about $10/person if you get entrees only. I'm a big fan of the pseudo-fusion they do. They have some pretty Chinese dishes (won ton soups, stir fried noodles...), but a lot of americanized stuff as well (kung pao chicken, mongolian beef, etc). The sign on the building says "exhibition wok cooking" which led me to think the place would be like Benihana, but with woks. Turns out that is not the case at all. The exhibition part was the cooks behind a big glass partition at the front. A bit of a disappointment, but not something I am going to knock them down for in the rating. As for the food... I call this type the Americanized Chinese food. Dishes like walnuts and prawns or crab and cheese puffs. Nothing unusual or weird (like chicken feet and the like). That said, the food was great. Their house fried rice had some of the best flavor I have had in a fried rice. The duck dish and the tamarind special were both really well done with great flavor and well cooked scallops. But you MUST believe me when I say this is the best Chinese-American restaurant in the Bay Area. - Clean. check. (The kitchen is separated from the dining room by a slightly tinted glass window, and you can see that they keep everything tidy) - Well-lit. (and I hate to sound like a complainer, but I need to see what I am eating, otherwise I will assume you are hiding something.) - Abundant portions. Check. We went there for lunch with another family today and despite there being 8 of us, they seated us quickly and even made sure we were near the aquarium because our kids showed interest in it. The service was prompt and efficient. They treated us very kindly, and I know how hard it is to wait on families with lots of small children. Thankfully our kids behaved! The establishment is clean, beautifully decorated, and comfortable. We were lucky it wasn't crowded today because our food came out within minutes of ordering. The quality of the food was top notch and everything was cooked to perfection. Even the tea was really yummy (and not too hot). Everyone was happy with their food and the kids really enjoyed their noodles and vegetables. I found Tommy's Wok by doing a search for family-friendly restaurants in Sausalito. I'm glad I did. I think Tommy's Wok is a bit overrated. I think it's geared for more of the non-Asian advanced beginner Marin crowd. I don't see very many Asian customers and it kind feels like an independent PF Chang's. They have a most of the lunch items on the menu would be graded with a solid C+ to B-. The Mongolian Beef and curry chicken were slightly below par. They do serve brown rice and have a neat aquarium at the front. Check it out if you're jonses for a light, slightly healthier than your typical Chinese lunch. read more

I absolutely love this place. I live in Sausalito And have been going here for years, but today pushed it over the edge enough to write a review as soon as I left. I have a cold and wanted the amazing vegetable noodle soup. Not only is the broth the best I've had, but the friend I was with had the chicken noodle and said the same thing. The portions are enough for two people so I took the other half to go. I decided to order another chicken soup to go. The woman I talked to could tell I had a cold and said some people just come in for the broth with ginger when they are sick. I asked if she could do that for me but to add the chicken. Not only was it packed and ready for me when we were done eating, she had taken our remaining soup we had for lunch, filled them with more broth and packed those up! Beyond the best service! We ordered delivery and got: 1: pork fried rice-no flavor 2: prawns with garlic noodles- only 6 smallish prawns and the garlic was burnt 3: mooshue chicken-ok i guess, but the plum sauce tasted weird, sort of like bbq sauce. My husband and I love going to Tommy's, especially for their relatively cheap lunch specials (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat). We enjoy the organic, fresh ingredients in dishes such as Spicy Basil Chicken (or Prawns), Cashew Chicken, Mo Shu, and Potstickers, among others. As others have mentioned, the pounded white organic meat in the chicken dishes is tender and delicious. Also, the Organic Shiitake Mushrooms with Baby Bok-Choy were a highlight. Note that one order of rice is enough for two (at dinner) and we often have leftovers since portions are generous. When with a big group you can get a large table with a lazy Susan so it's easy to share. We ordered the tower of appetizers for 3, even though we had 6 people, and it was huge (a combination of spareribs, crab cheese puffs, jumbo fried prawns, veggie egg rolls, paper-wrapped chicken & beef satay) so glad we didn't order for 6. As you get to know the menu, you'll likely find favorites like we did and return often. When we made "The Big Move" from SF to Marin, one of the things we were most worried about was a lack of good Chinese food. Thankfully, there's Tommy's Wok! It's an unassuming little place in a nondescript strip mall on the north end of Sausalito. I didn't have high hopes when we first walked in..but yum! The dishes we had were very fresh tasting, not too oily and included a lot of veggies (and not overcooked as so many Chinese places make it). We especially like their hot and sour soup, veggie potstickers and pea shoots. We've also had several chicken dishes that were yummy, all served with heaps of veggies. The only downfall is their brown rice. I'm not sure what's up with it but it's really off-putting. The staff is friendly and I love being able to be a lookie-lou in to their kitchen through the glass wall. read more

Tommy's is GREAT! We showed up around 8 on a Friday night. They were quite busy, but able to seat us immediately. Promptly waited on by a gracious server too. Started with the sizzling rice soup - EXCELLENT! Next, sweet and sour pork and Tommy's fried rice (bbq pork, chicken & shrimp) - AWESOME! And the tea!! Not your average green or jasmine! I asked, though the full name now escapes me, but it was lychee-something. Really lovely and complemented the meal without getting in the way. The best part about this whole experience? I came here tonight with my roommate for dinner. The restaurant was packed but no problem getting a table. We had the vegetable chow fun and the chicken mo shu (yup mo shu, not mu shu!). The mo shu was good, the waitress mentioned they use all breast meat and the dish was flavorful and satisfying. My roommate also enjoyed her chow fun. Prices here were reasonable (high for Chinese food but its Marin you know?). Most meat entrees were $12+ but portions were just right for sharing or for one. Service here was also fast. I only came here for take out. It was a Sunday evening and they were fairly busy. The ambience is pretty fancy but walking in and eating in gym clothes in totally oaky. They have a salt water wish tank that is beautiful and well kept. The to go order took about 10 minutes which isn't long at all compared to how many people were there. The food was oh my god delicious. I would drive to Sausalito just for their cream puffs and orange chicken. It was fairly inexpensive, although they do have more expensive dishes. Din. That's the word that came to mind after eating dinner at Tommy's Wok. The acoustics of the place are terrible and there's no way to have a normal dinner conversation without raising your voice or saying, "What!?" over and over. I attribute all the mistakes with our order not to any language barrier, but to the fact that our waitress couldn't hear us and we hadn't a clue when she repeated the order back to us. Too bad the people dining next to us had such an impression. It was an Italian couple with their children. Needless to say, I felt that I knew them far too well after hearing them yell at each other. As for the food, it tasted fine. I appreciate the fact that it didn't have the greasy feel that many Chinese restaurants have. There's a neat glass wall between the dining area and the kitchen, so you can see how your foods are being prepared. All the meats were free-range and the vegetable seemed to be very fresh. Of course, you pay a bit extra for these niceties. I might try going back on a slow weeknight, but this is someplace I would avoid during busy times of the week. read more
