I have been quite remiss! I love Tomo, having been here four or five times now and, somehow, not having raved about it earlier on Google. My apologies. ‍ I love the coziness of the restaurant, the attention you get from the hosts, servers, and chefs. I'm partial to sushi and sashimi and all my selections have been wonderful. My wife loves the Shrimp Teriyaki with udon noodles. She also had a ginger salad today and we both enjoy their miso soup. We almost always start with a green tea but have enjoyed nihonshu (sake) as well when not driving soon after. Sherin, our server, answered questions about the new menu items we considered and was delightful. We will continue to return, I hope more frequently now that summer is upon us. Stopped by lunch for the first time and found this little gem of sushi place in north Tampa. Plenty of options from the lunch menu including pick 2 rolls selections, Korean dishes like bulgogi, Japanese dishes like pork and chicken katsu. The atmosphere is quaint and place is nicely decorated. It's a family run restaurant so don't expect lots of wait staff but our service was personal and on point. Location: It is in a strip mall at Bearss and Florida. However it is behind a Marathon Gas Station with stores like La Bahia Bakery among others. Inside is a small but nicely decorated Japanese restaurant. Sushi: I ordered the Spicy tuna, Arizona, and Hawaiian rolls as well as a soda. The sushi was fresh and about average sized maki rolls. The spicy tuna was slightly mushy, but had good flavor. The Hawaii had fresh mango slivers on top which added to the taste. The Arizona roll was ok, but not super memorable. The food was solid 3.5/5 The service and prices are what elevate it to 4/5. My server was very polite and was always checking on me. My bill before tax/tip was $28. My normal bill usually is around $33-36 and in this post Big C world, that is appreciated. I didn't really see any roll exceeding $13 which is nice. It seems like this is a place with lots of repeat customers who are loyal. Cons: Closed Sundays (I'm getting tired of Sushi restaurants or Tampa Restaurants being closed on Sundays.) We both ordered the pick two lunch special. For a very reasonable $15, you get two rolls of your choice from the lunch menu plus a miso soup or a ginger salad. Very close to 4.5 stars restaurant. I would said they are good enough in this area. In fact, they are better than most of the Japanese restaurant which serves by non Japanese chef. I believe many enjoy the food once they have the sashimi. Restaurant is kind of tuck away in the plaza. Not visible to the Main Street. We got bento box special and the Arizona roll. We are kind of in hurry for a movie but we didn't tell them so. However, the speed of the serving, we were able to finish at 35 minutes. I like my bento box. It has sashimi, sushi, California roll, goyoza, teriyaki chicken, tempura shrimp and veggies. Accompanying with salad and soup. I like the way they prepared the sashimi. The fish was glazed with sesame oil. Nice touch. The temperature is crispy and evenly spread of flour. I like they special made goyoza. The infill include meat and scallions. Very nice. They have racist staff, and their piss poor service overshadowed their creative selection of sushi. I sat in their restaurant for 2 hours because the waitress had an issue serving people of color, we waited 38 minutes for the appetizer, and an hour and a 1/2 for the fried rice and Sushi! Because the waitress waited to put in our order! There was only like two or three tables they were serving! My daughter told me she kept seeing the waitress look at us and kept walking by our table with a scowl! What an old miserable lady; you just lost your employer business! Very small but very cute. I got edamame as an appetizer and they seemed very dry.but the miso was nice and warm. The red dragon roll was by far my favorite I love tuna and it was super crunchy with a little spice! Oddly though the tamago was warm which I have not encountered before. For dessert I had mango mochi and it was very good minus the whip cream and chocolate my server was very helpful with recommendations as well at refilling waters and anything else we needed. I'm giving it 4 stars because for the most part they did nothing wrong but, I would not come back here again. I think if it's close to you and you don't have a favorite place, go. We walked in around 6 so it was pretty quiet. We were immediately greeted by the sushi chefs! and seated ourselves. There was only one waitress so we were glad to have beat the dinner rush. She was very quick and friendly. We were greeted with somewhat warm towelettes, only bad part was that they smelt dingy. I did go to the restroom and actually wash my hands regardless. Along with the towelettes they gave a side platter of edamame. I was super excited about this part because I'd been craving them for about a month now. Much to my surprise they were already cooked and preheated;nonetheless I was starving and wanted them always. We ordered sake, chicken katsu (deep fried breaded chicken)- which came with rice, salad and miso soup. We also ordered the Tomo roll, mainly because it said 'scallops' and i'm a huge scallop fan. The soup was piping hot and the salad was what you expect from a Japanese restaurant. The chicken katsu came out and it looked very crispy. More like it was crispy a while ago and then re-deep fried to be crispier. It was too dry for me but the hubs ate it anyway. The reason I'm a fan is because of this roll the 'Tomo roll' It has crab, avocado, asparagus tops and then there is a mixture of scallop and mushrooms baked on top of the roll. It was so good I ordered two! I'm pretty sure they put more mushrooms in the second roll but it was still good. Will definitely go back for more sushi rolls. read more

Sushi wasn't bad but I'm rating a 1 star because the smoked food wasn't really smoked, the red dragon roll was small (every sushi bar I've been to has the sizes way bigger) and the miso soup was straight up flavored hot water and you don't give hot water as a soup!!!!! I am basing this review purely on the quality of the food. One of the reasons why I tried this sushi restaurant was due to the 4.5 star rating on Yelp. I ordered the chicken Katsu, Tampa roll, and the bagel roll. The chicken Katsu was possibly the lowest quality poorest rendition of this dish that I have ever eaten. The meat was very dark and low quality. The chicken tasted old and was primarily thigh meat. The breaded portion of the chicken was very thick and texturally off. My complimentary salad included a little fly/nat who climbed out of the bowl. The sushi was also sub par. I have enjoyed Sushi from Publix that seemed to utilize better ingredients. Wow what a disappointment. As others have indicated the prices here are also steep. I hate writing a 2 star review, but I must be honest and I don't want another patron to see 4.5 stars and expect an excellent meal. read more

This is our go to spot for sushi... and not just because it is a 1/2 mile from our house... the kindness of the people, the flavors of the food, the careful preparation of each roll... it's all there. Our meal that we get everytime consists of their Miso soup (without onions), the House Ginger Salad and 2 rolls: Sweet Potato Tempura Roll and Avocado Roll with Avocado on Top, Eel Sauce, Spicy Mayo and a generous sprinkling of Tempura Bits. They always get it right and always provide generous amounts of wasabi and soy sauce for our dipping pleasure. I have been coming here for well over a decade and have been impressed with the consistency and quality of their food as well as their impeccable service levels. Love the sushi from Tomo. If you live near here, please go there! It's often empty when we go so I want to make sure that quality businesses survive and thrive. The sushi is remarkably fresh and clean. Some of the larger specialty rolls are good but you're not going to find the heavy and "trendy" rolls that you will find in South Tampa. Go here for the simplicity and quality of the food. Take out usually takes a few more minutes than they quote, so keep that in mind. The staff and owners are always super nice and appreciative. Visiting from the east coast for work, I was alone and looked up restaurants on yelp. This had the best reviews, so I drove 15 minutes to come check it out. It's in a little strip mall, the staff are incredibly friendly, I believe the family has been there 13 years (if I understood correctly). Salmon Sashimi was so fresh and had that buttery quality. Delicious! The unfiltered cold sake was amazing, definitely try it! The vegetable tempura also tastes incredibly fresh. They used some delicious squashes in mine. Sadly the quality of the food was not great. Over the years we have noticed there are never many people dining in, no matter what time we pick up food. When we sat down I noticed the tablecloth was really dirty and had literal food stuck to it, so I looked to move to another table and to my dismay ALL of the other tablecloths were filthy! I finally visited Tomo after planing to eat here for months. The Yelpers who reviewed it before me are correct. The sushi here is great. It tastes fresh and prices are slightly above average, but you get your money's worth. I ordered their Tomo Lunch Box, a bento box which comes with a miso soup, ginger salad, teriyaki chicken, rice, tempura veggies and shrimp, 4 pieces of a california roll, and 2 nigiri rolls of salmon and tuna. All of the food was great and they were generous with the portions. The service was on point and our server was quick to seat us, put our orders in, and handle the bill. The atmosphere was great as well with traditional music playing softly in the background and a well decorated restaurant with many Japanese inspirations to it. They also have Korean BBQ on the menu being Korean-owned. I'd definitely go visit Tomo again! read more
