Bonsai has hands-down the best sushi in Wesley Chapel and north of Tampa. I have been coming to Bonsai since high school and still love its charm and food. However, it could use a slight revamp or remodel since it has looked the same since day one. Due to its small size, the restaurant can get busy on the weekends. However, the service is good, and the food always arrives promptly. The best part about this place is the food. I have never had a bad meal here, and I often bring friends who love sushi. For a long time, my favorite roll has been the volcano roll; I adore the combination of flavors and crab all in one bite, especially when dipped in eel sauce! Walked in and was greeted by an exceptionally friendly hostess. Lots of energy and very funny. We had multiple severs stopped by one of which was either the manager or owner. Awesome service. We had five rolls. Yes that was one roll to many but easier than making choices. I ate two of them and they were delicious. Ben ate the other three and he liked them. Good service and great food. They're SO skilled and FAST. So fun to watch. The plain sushi (fish and rice) is our go to. The fish is always fresh and they do not skip on the fish. The restaurant is always clean. First things first, five out of five! Second, my wife and I have passed this please many a time as it is well located, but, without much signage, or hearing from others any positive (or negative) reviews, we just did not give this place a thought before... When I got home, and we opened the packages, everything was very artistically arranged on the foil, which definitely made me more excited. I don't remember all the rolls we got, but, we did order the A&A Roll, the Bucs Roll (go Bucs!) and the Volcano Roll. My wife and I both agreed they were all delicious, and we know next time we'll probably get two A&As, a Bucs, and a Volcano Roll. Give this place a chance, but, also do know, for quality sushi it will come for a price, and this is definitely more of a special occasion type of pricing to get you fully satiated. read more

They have menus but when you are ordering sushi, you order off a piece of paper like if you were at a DimSum restaurant. They definitely operate differently from other places. My sister's friend has ordered their Krab Rangoon before and said that it was unique. I have to say, it is not like all the other krab rangoons that you have tried. The imitation krab meat and cream cheese was stuffed between 2 perilla leaves and lightly fried in a batter covered in eel sauce. It was pretty good but I wish they were wontons. Been here a few times now and each time am pleasantly surprised by the quality. The fish was extremely fresh (Friday night). I preferred the tuna and my wife preferred the salmon. The ginger sauce the pink lady roll came with was good too, but don't go crazy with it because it can be very overpowering. Also, the wasabi is very powerful here which I very much appreciate. We had miso soup- very good, shrimp shumai- delicious and of course sushi were pretty good! 3 stars for service- they felt rushed and overwhelmed, one guy was nice but a lady wanted to take away our menu and expect us to share one. We said we need two and didn't give her the other menu. So weird, they had plenty of menus. Also they didn't give us drink menu, we had to ask for it. 2.5 stars for ambiance- I would say place needs an upgrade. They had in the corner bunch of tables together and had some dirty towels and cleaning supplies, but then they would cram all tables together, Simone would I touch me every time they walked next to me. They should remove those nasty tables from the corner and put tables for people to seat. It's not very nice to eat and look at some cleaning supplies. Bathroom was clean but very run down. This place would be amazing if they would upgrade the inside, or at least clean it well and organize tables in the right way. They also would need some workers who are a little more considerate. The best sushi in all of Wesley chapel and Tampa. I've had them all ( ken sushi, kelp, sushi ninja , the one in ybor is pretty decent) point being this is my favorite place. I recommend the hamachi Kama for appetizers. Lightly fried so the fish stays moist. It is a yellow tail jaw fried and it's so good. I recommend: doctor roll, sexy man roll, sexy Wallace roll. All cut thin. With egg sauce and "spicy sauce" (which is their version of spicy mayo). With extra slices of lemon I like to bite after my sushi (interchange it with ginger to refresh my palate, trust... this is a game changer. Even after you you eat a sashami of oturo) They have otoro and uni as well. Otoro is better than their uni quality. For uni I like Izakaya on Dale Mabry. That's my second favorite sushi spot. If you get any other rolls then I can't guarantee the same satisfaction. Boss lady is name Mrs.Jung, she's been here for over 10+ years so show her some love. They don't have Instagram but this place is a must try. Definitely best sushi place around. Other appetizers that are good: ginger salad, cucumber salad, baby octopus which is my second appetizers to get. A lot of people like the crab Rangoon as well they use a leaf instead of wonton chips which is a nice twist. Their spicy tuna is good too, good filler choice. read more

They need more sushi roll options. The rolls they have did not offer enough fish ingredients on it. Most rolls had one or two types of fish and then rice, cucumber, and sauce to cover. 2. It took a bit long to get our food. So, I have more positives but the ones they need work on is providing better options on their menu and the wait which are two big ones when customers are hungry. This is our new standby for sushi in New Tampa. The staff is fantastic! There is a decent selection of sake and wine. In addition to delicious sushi rolls they also offer yummy basic Japanese entrees. During COVID this remains our favorite in the area. They do take out and also dine in at the sushi bar at the time of this review. If you want a custom roll they will do it.
