First the disclaimer and my response to all the other naysayers: This is a local fast food restaurant AKA greasy spoon AKA dive. They do not serve gourmet food, Gordon Ramsay does not work here, and the owner(s) do not purport to offer a "fine dining" experience. If that's what you're looking for, you're better off going to Gibon's or Wildfire. What do you really expect from a hot dog/burger joint? Fast, cheap food, period. (And by fast, I don't mean it's ready 2 seconds after you pay; if that's what you expect, go to McDonald's. This place cooks their food to order, so yes, you should expect to wait a few minutes). That being said, I give them 5 stars because they always exceed my expectations. I go here several times a month and have been for at least 7 years, and I have never had a bad meal or complaint. Hot dogs are what you'd expect; the burgers are good; I enjoy the Italian beef (though it's not as good as Novi's down the street), but you can tell they roast it fresh in house, not from a bag, and the au jus has a good spice and flavor; their tacos and quesadillas taste good (I do wish they made their own tamales, but nonetheless they use Supreme brand which is fine with me). Their fries are cut fresh, crisp, I can taste that they use peanut oil, and thankfully the oil never tastes "old" like many other places. I absolutely LOVE the greek potatoes, and they just might have some of the best chicken noodle soup I've ever had! You can tell a lot about a place by its employee turnover. I've seen the same group of people working behind the counter as long as I've been going there, which generally means they are treated well and enjoy their jobs. For that, they also do their job well. As I've said already, I've never had anything to complain about. I'm not sure if the guy that's usually working the register is the owner (Tom?), but he gives off an aura that he is. To be honest, the first few times I went in there I thought he was kind of grumpy -- maybe just having a bad day, I know the feeling. After several visits, he opened up and we can banter now. He recognizes me any time I go there and, by now, remembers what I usually order. Personally I feel the new gaming room is tacky. However it seems almost every food place in Illinois is doing that sort of thing now, and if the additional revenue keeps the other prices down, then I really don't care -- go in and gamble to your hearts desire, just not for me. All in all, I think the place is excellent for a good, quick meal. The prices are good and the quality is excellent. There are several other fast food joints in the area (Pop's, Stella's, Henry's, Lucky Dog) and none of them compare -- I will choose Tom's over them any day of the week! read more

This place keeps putting everybody around it out of business. That should be worth a look. Great gyros, and burgers. Fresh cut fries with the skin on. A little pricy compared to other greek joints. But you have to look for the specials. They are on a little 8 x 10 sign at the register. Of course they have a huge menu. The ribs and baked chicken are in a case on the front counter. So they are reheated. My friend has had both for dinner and said they were pretty good. Sorry, I'm not taking anyone's word for it again. But I'm not eating something that's been in a heat box for who knows how many hours, or days. Stick with the fresh cooked fair. Expect to wait in line at lunch. One register, slow service. read more

I've had a few of their items and I have to say my favorite is the Gyros sandwich. The burgers and chicken sandwiches are good. However, their Gyros sandwiches may be the best in the city (Chicago - metro). I consider myself a Gyros connoisseur. This place ROCKS! The fries are fresh and tasty. The refills have to be requested at the counter. I'll continue to try their other food items. So far so good! read more

I used to go here a lot when i live in the berwyn/lyons area. We always got the greek chicken with fries and the "salad" on the side. I loved that chicken. The sauce it was in is amazing. But of course, they had other non-greek items. When I was younger, I used to get the corn dogs. All in all the food is good, but not to die for. read more

This crew works hard, works fast, and cooks up quality food at decent prices. I find the Italian Beef especially tasty, and the gyros is also pretty darn good. There's a lot of the menu I haven't tried, but I don't imagine going wrong with any of their many choices. read more

I really like this place my favorite are The Greek Fries OMG soo good if you are carrying them out ask for them well done because they pour Greek juices and feta cheese on them, such a guilty pleasure! There Beef sandwich is also really good way better than Portillos which is down the street I honesty rather have one from Tom's they are packed with tasty beef I usually ask for it dipped and with sweet peppers. I have only had two things here, hot dogs and they gyros. I would never get the gyros again. The meat was a weird texture and did not taste like gyros meat you would get elsewhere. The hot dogs are good except I wish they were not so tiny, they are definitely not Vienna beef hot dogs. The fries have good flavor, but are limp and not crispy. The food needs improvement. Just an FYI, there is a review in here that says they do not take credit cards, that is incorrect, they do accept credit cards. read more

Nothing special. Greasy, hangover food. But it's 2011, they do not accept debit cards, etc. Only cash and I dont carry cash. Bullcrap! Might as well go a block away to Mister Submarine which has all the same foods, but they take debit cards. read more

Another burger joint, or as I like to call it, that I will never forget. First time I tried this place was around 2007 when I was still living in Lyons. I always admired the smell of burgers in the air as you pass by the place. When you walk in: you see the grill and such behind the cashier, the flames coming up from beneath the grill, the gyro meat spinning slowly in the cooker. As they take your order, they tell the cooks what to make as they finish taking your order. Pretty quick if you ask me. The food is fully cooked and made just like you want it. Sometimes I have to wait for the food to cool down a bit before I can enjoy it. I went back a couple of more times that year. That's when the family and I moved. Now it's tough to find a place similar to this where I live at now. There may be a time where I will visit that area again and when I do, I'm gonna visit Tom's and get myself a nice, big burger with their amazing fries. read more

I was at Tom's Carry Out just about an hour ago. I ordered a Gyros dinner and got a sandwich. I told the cook this is not what I ordered and he said sorry made a mistake. When I got the food it was stiil the same thing. I at that point just gave up and was leaving. Before I knew it I had Tom the owner in my face screaming at me that he was going to give me back my money because I was obviously not going to be satisfied with my meal. He listened for the last 15 minutes on how rude I was to his employee. The man was inches from my face yelling. My question is would anyone paying customer like to be treated like that especially by the owner. By the way when I got it home it was still not well done like a requested. In fact a one star review from me is more that generous. It should be 4 thumbs down.. So if you would want to be treated like a piece of dog dodo just visit Tom at Toms Carry Out after all he is the owner. Tom's is the first place my family suggests on nights we are eating out. The Gyros are AWSOME other family favorites are their Cheeseburgers, Italian Sausage, and Taco Dinners. My husband and I also love their Rib Dinners. Yum. I don't think we have had anything we haven't liked! read more

The food is great! We try something new every time we go there, and have never been disappointed. However, the business would benefit by accepting credit/debit cards--I have seen several customers leave because they do not have cash on them. I didn't expect the customer service to be spectacular, considering it is a carry out place, but don't show up within a half hour of closing time, or you'll be rushed out. Always good always fast always fresh.. What more do you want? This place has been here since I was a kid and remember when it was a small hot dog joint attached to the fruit market. A lot has changed and a few decades passed, but the food tastes exactly the same. Gyros, Double Cheeseburger, and Chicken pita's rock and you can't beat the fresh cut fries. I like to eat and never finished a meal so portions aren't skimpy. If you've never been there you should go, it would definitely be a place you'd go back to. read more
