Meh. Went here tonight and realized why I haven't been back since they opened. The service was non existent. Waited a good 10 minutes for a waitress to take my order. I ordered the Cajun fries and 1 pound of shrimp with 1/2 pound of sausage and corn in the Tom's combo sauce. The Cajun fries were pretty good. The Tom's combo sauce had potential to be good, but it was too thin and oily. Rolled the dice on dinner and landed on Tom's Crab Shack, I want my dice back. Was wary of the fluctuations of larger portions pricing as they are based on the market, and this was a first attempt. So in good faith I ordered a taster combo, it consisted of a box of french fries (95% meal) with dumped seasoning- not blended at all. Butterfly Shrimp 4, extra small chicken wings 3, and lastly calamari 4(rubber textured). One day I'm sure it will get better, today was just not that day. I won't compare this place to Boiling Crab, rating it strictly on it's own merits. I ordered a pound of shrimp, with Tom's Combo, medium spice. The sauce is decent. It could have used a bit more butter and garlic in the mix, but it was enjoyable. The shrimp was a little overcooked. Kind of mushy in some instances. The price I paid was definitely too much for the lack of quality. The only reason I would ever come back is that there is really no alternative in the East Bay. read more

Went to this restaurant for my birthday yesterday and I all I can say is I will be returning. As soon as we walked in we were greeted seated and helped,without reservations. I have been here many many times and gave many chances, but will not be going back. I live in the area and was excited to have a crab spot to go to, so I am disappointed it hasn't met basic expectations. 1) They often don't open on time. There have been a few occasions they were more than 30+mins late opening because of the owner running late. Employees would wait in their car since they didn't have a key. 2) I've seen the seafood sit outside in the bed of the owners truck, on a warm day, for at least an hour. If you think you're getting fresh seafood, sorry to disappoint. I've gotten a rotten leg one time. 3) Service needs major improvement. 2 of the girls I've had in the past were nice, but was really pissed off the last time I went. She had a terrible attitude when she tried to overcharge me ( by $40 - place is not cheap to begin with). 4) Always out of King Crab. If you're getting the combo, they'll still charge you the full price - even though there is no King Crab which costs more. Review your receipts!! I could go on, but I'll stop there. I make better sauce at home (which speaks volumes for a restaurant). I ordered corn and they gave me a potato instead. In addition, my garlic noodles were burnt! I will say they have the best sauce around. I tried rockin crab first and It was extremely disgusting. If your looking for a good viet-cajun sauce then Tom's crab is your spot. This place is a bit of a dive, but we go regularly and like this place a lot, but we partake of a limited subset of the menu. The best things is the (expensive) King Crab Legs and the Sausage. The crab is steamed is served with a buttery spice mixture. It is a real mess to eat, but it is very tasty. I get the extra spicy version which do have a kick. They have beer and wine. The shrimp is ok, as are the quite small clams & mussels. We have not had the crayfish or calamari nor the chicken wings. The corn is standard fast food corn-on-the-cob (not great). The potatoes are good to soak up the spicy butter. The lobster was not worth it. We have tried the combos, but now go for just the king crab, sausages, and potatoes. No idea what it was "boiled" in...? I went to a Cajun shack while in Miami a feed months ago, so I do know how it's supposed to be (only had garlic noodles then). Plus my fiancé has had a boil before so I got the info ;) Usually there is some kind of bread offered for soaking up all the yummy broth, but that isn't an option here, only rice so that was disappointing as well. It took a while to get said sausage. Then we had to go up front to find out how to pay, never got a check. Again, kind of odd. Spices and flavors were decent. This place has a lot of potential but they need to step up their game to get a better rating from us. To start, they serve their soft drinks in mason jars with handles. A nice touch, however it's a small serving and refills are full-priced. Their crawdads are frozen, not fresh. They're upfront about this and it could be that seasonally, fresh may be too expensive but if they're selling other fresh seafood at Market Pricing, those wanted fresh Crawdads will most likely pay for them too. Food was tasty, however service is horrible! I get there are only 2 people running around, but how do you not bring water to people (or even ask especially with the type of food being eaten, could be ?!). We have 7 people seated, she brings 2 cups of ice water when we specifically ask for 7. She then she brings 3 more (10 minutes longer and still short 2 cups) and had to stop another waitress to ask for 2 more. We then ask for 2 cups of rice and had to stop them multiple times for it because they forgot to bring it. They didn't bring any of the limes, salt/seasoning, some utensils and bibs after the food was brought to the table. I then see the waitress (the one serving us) go over to another table that just left, looked at the table on the side and mumbled something and shook her head. Was she looking for her tip? . Anywho, they really need another hand to help or learn to better manage tables even if short handed and it wasn't even a full house when we got there. $85 later, we still left a small tip (hubby felt bad and we normally tip 20% if the service was good or at least if it looked like they were trying). I don't understand how this place has been given 5 stars for anything. We went here not long after they opened and it was like they had forgotten EVERY detail about running a restaurant ever. So to give them the benefit of the doubt, we went back again about a year later to see if things had gotten better. They haven't. Not really. While we didn't have to wait for 2 hours to get a seat, and we didn't have to clean our own table like we did the first time (or get our own silverware and tell the server what to do), the service was still terrible and the kitchen was clearly in disarray. How do you run out of CRAB at the crab shack? We tried to order the boils and they were out of everything. They were out of king crab and didn't tell us until after we ordered it. The server asked to give us one additional leg of the snow crab instead (but still charged us king crab price. Snow crab is significantly smaller than king crab, btw). They were out of corn on the cob (How Sway? There is Ranch 99 AND Grocery outlet across the street! How do you run out of CORN??). They were out of fish and chips. When the crab came, it didn't even taste fresh. The little plastic ramekins they give you with butter in them only had (I kid you not) a centimeter of butter in the bottom. As if they were rationing the butter. They were low on potatoes so each boil got one potato each. We asked for hot sauce and the server was confused and brought us cocktail sauce. When we asked for to go containers, they brought containers that were too small. We had to break up our food to fit it in there and he said it was all they had. So...you don't carry containers that fit the food you serve?? Hmm. It just seemed like they didn't make an effort. The server acted like this was typical and even though we really wanted to give this place a chance,we likely won't be back. My family ordered one of the deluxe combos with crab legs, crawfish, clams and sausages. I had their little combo baskets that came with garlic fries, shrimp, calamari, and chicken wings. First off, my garlic fries tasted like plain fries. Not enough garlic. My calamari and shrimp were BURNT. My chicken wings were okay - but I feel like they were fried together with the shrimp and calamari. My mom said the crab legs didn't taste fresh - they were on the dry side. My brothers said the sauce was good, but on the oily side. Our waitress was barely around even though there was hardly anyone there since it was the day after Thanksgiving. Let me preface this review with the fact that I really wanted to like this place. I saw it a couple of days ago on my way to the Rockin Crawfish across the street. I figured The Rockin Crawfish can't be the only game in town serving great garlic crab, so let's go for it! The atmosphere has the same concept as with any of the other crab joints, I.e. Boiling Crab, Rocking Crawfish, etc. Knowing this is a new establishment I anticipated slow service or lack thereof. I ordered the strawberry iced tea, which was okay. A bit too sweet for me, but I tolerated it. The menu doesn't have a huge selection, but most of these places don't. What I did like were the combo options, but decided to stick with what I came for, which was the crab. I ordered the Dungeness, garlic butter, mild sauce. I added on corn, sausage, and potatoes. The young girl that took my order told me the wait would be very long for crab because unlike the shrimp it wasn't already streamed. I asked how long she said she didn't know, but maybe 20 minutes?? Okay, I'll wait. After 30 minutes we asked another young girl when my order would be ready, she flat out said, "I don't know". WTH? A couple of minutes later we had our order. The server plopped our order down in a plastic bag without a bowl, pan, or anything. I asked for a bowl and got a dirty wooden bowl. I immediately sent it back to be cleaned and wondered why in the world they're service greasy, buttery, seafood in a porous container. That is food poisoning situation waiting for a place to happen. Once I felt satisfied with the cleanliness of my bowl I opened the plastic bag to an overwhelming amount of a paste-like tomato substance. The flavor of the "sauce" was horrendous. I was instantly dissatisfied. While poking at this disaster of a 65.00 meal I realize the crab hasn't even been cleaned! GTFOH! The entire body was still fully attached with all the sea gunk and other gross fluids! TURN OFF! So, to some it up, would I return to this place? NO. I finally found a place that compares to Boiling Crab! It's so hard finding a place in the east bay that is up to par with Boiling crab! I wish I had known about this place sooner. I came here on a Saturday night around 7pm and there was no wait or even a full house at that! We were greeted and seated right away. The place was pretty quiet, no loud music playing like Boiling Crab or Rockin' Crawfish. They even played Christmas music which I thought was cute, since it is the holidays, especially since they played an *Nsync song! That alone gave this place points in my book. We ordered garlic noodles, cajun fries, rice, 1/2 lb sausage, 1/2 lb shrimp and an order of potatoes in Tom's combo sauce mild. Overall the food and sauce was sooooo similar to Boiling Crab. It's so freakin' close in taste! Finally, I don't have to drive all the way to Sacramento or San Jose! Their fries are a thicker cut but they were still good. Their garlic noodles were tasty as well. I like that their potatoes were huge but at the same time I didn't. I guess it's more bang for your buck compared to the small, red potatoes at boiling crab, so in the end it is a good thing. Other things I liked about this place is you can order shrimp in half pounds, other places like Rockin' Crawfish or Kickin' Crab don't do that. So that already was a plus for me. I also like that they have garlic noodles here. I know there are other cajun places like this that offer garlic noodles but Boiling crab doesn't. So that was another thing I liked about this place. Also they serve their drinks in cute mason jars. Some things that I didn't really like was that their "boil" (shrimp, potatoes and sausage) were served in a bowl which made the food get cold quicker. Also they didn't provide enough sauce. It also would've been nice if their fruit teas had free refills. Also if you order potatoes or sausage you have to order it with some kind of seafood in order to get it with a sauce (lemon pepper, tom's comobo sauce). All are pretty minor but wouldn't deter me from coming back. Because overall I really enjoyed the food here, and the service was decent too. I'll definitely come back here since this is now my go-to for cajun/boiling crab-esque food in the east bay! read more

Came here w/ my family on the restaurant's 2nd day open. First thing that came to mind when we walked in - this looks like Boilng Crab. The theme and decorations of this place is very similar to Boiling Crab. Not sure if that's what they intended but the food was right up there w Boiling Crab. The restaurant was super clean and the service really prompt. The thing we liked the most was the special seafood combos they had that ranged from $25 - $60 and included lots of food. We got the $38 combo that included 2Ibs shrimp, 1ib clams, 3 corn and sausage and potatoes. We also ordered sweet potato fries and garlic noodles. It was plenty of food for a family of 6 people (4adults 2kids) All the seafood tasted fresh and there sauce was pretty damn good. I highly recommend the combos and ordering some sides w/ them. Concord has their own version of boiling crab! I think if I didn't live so close to boiling crab I would have given this place 4 stars, but upon comparison, 3 solid stars. They're hidden in the corner of a little complex next to Smile Care. Parking isn't too bad, but I can assume the lot may fill up during peak dinner time hours. We ordered the Combo #1 for $28.75 which included 1lb of shrimp or crawfish, 1lb of mussels or clams, 2 corns, 3 potatoes, and 8 sausage pieces. This was perfect for two people. For additions, we ordered the garlic noodles and steamed rice to drizzle the Tom's combo sauce on. The noodles came in a basket, a decent portion for the price ($6.99). They were a bit on the buttery side, a bit too much imo, but a good amount of garlic. Get ready for an overload of flavor if you pair it with the shrimp in that Tom's combo sauce. The shrimp was on the softer side, so for a few of them when you peeled it some of the shrimp came off with the shell :( I think it was a tad bit overcooked. Otherwise, the mussels were large and easy to eat. The Tom's combo sauce was more oily and peppery than those who have had the whole shabang at BC, so I'm definitely biased there. But my boyfriend who hasn't had either liked it a lot. I recommend putting it over rice ;) Overall for the price and the location I'd say try it out, especially because boiling crab is in the South Bay a long way away. I had a craving for some Cajun shrimp boil and I've been to Rockin' Crawfish before but the service and a few other things kind of threw me off so I decided to try Tom's out. There was actually a party of 30 that night when we were dining and the workers seemed very accommodating. * they have lots of flat screen TV's inside if you're interested in watching a game. SERVICE: I sadly didn't catch our servers name, she was attentive and friendly. FOOD: Our food didn't take too long at all, thank goodness we ordered before that party of 30 started ordering. SHRIMP: I ordered a pound of shrimp, mild and with toms combo (garlic butter+lemon pepper+Cajun) $12.99/lb. First thing I noticed was that the shrimp came in a wooden bowl and not in a plastic bag which I personally thought that that was a bad idea since the shrimp is going to get cold quicker without the bag keeping the shrimp piping hot. Also, 90% of my shrimp was over cooked, it started to become difficult to peel the shrimp, and my shrimp ended up being cold when I was almost done and I was going at a steady pace too. I ordered mild, no kick and my friend ordered spicy for hers but even that had no kick to it. CAJUN FRIES: Pretty good, their fries are steak cut fries. Ask for extra seasoning on them! CALAMARI: My friend ordered this and it was alright, definitely not fresh since they were really chewy. *$10 minimum and they don't take AMEX. They don't take reservations. And we were the last group to be served. The staff apologized profusely, but we kept seeing other tables sit down, get food, pay the bill, and leave. BEFORE WE HAD EVEN GOTTEN OUR FOOD! They comped a few items for us, but pretty bad service. I came again with some coworkers, and again, really slow service! It is a shame though, because the food here is good. Great alternative to Boiling Crab and better than other Cajun seafood spots we've tried (Crawstation in SF and Red Crawfish in San Mateo). Our server was pleasant and very attentive. We ordered the Combo #2 with shrimps, lobster tail, sausages and corn. We asked if we could substitute the potatoes for more corn but they don't allow substitutions. I think they should be a little more flexible with substituting certain items that are offered in the Combo, which is why I deducted one star. We ordered a mild garlic and butter sauce which had just the right amount of kick. The shrimps were very plump and the lobster was meaty. The sausages were just as tasty. The corn was bland and not sweet but they can easily fix that by getting sweet corn from another vendor. The plain iced tea was good. We also ordered catfish with cajun fries. Both were good too. We will definitely return to get our Cajun seafood fix. Hopefully on our next visit, they will be a little bit more flexible with substituting items in the Combo menu and serve tastier corn. read more

I am giving this a three because of our family dining situation. My husband and kids loved the atmosphere and food. THe tastes were great, environment was perfect for loud families with kids such as ours, and the staff was very friendly. The reason i don't rate it more is because it was expensive for the amount of food we received. My in-laws were with us, and we ordered what we thought was a substantial amount of meals but it barely fed us all. I would definitely come back without my in-laws if my kids and husband wanted to visit. read more
