Went here for a Sunday lunch, opted to get a bunch of skewers, the first impression of this place was immediately how busy it was. Got there around 1PM and didn't expected that many people - it was very crowded, this was for a two person and the tables are really small. Think about the Laowu Shanghai Dumpling place in route one, the seats are that small. It wouldn't be a big issue if you don't order more than 2 actual dishes, though even then that became a bit wild. The skewers are okay, I prefer other places only because when the skewers came out, it was not that hot at all which was odd. The place is very hard at hearing, so let's go to the food, the prices for the skewers were on par with other places nearby, the actual dishes, however, seem a bit steep. I would say the value for price is pretty close, but the seating left me a bit reserved about coming back, maybe on another day where they're not as busy. read more

From what I've been told, the food here is very authentic "Northern-style" Chinese food with an extensive menu of skewers, meats, stews, and noodle dishes. Some of my group's favorites included the chicken and mushroom stew and the fried eggplant dish. While very flavorful, the meal overall gets oily and dishes like the skewers do add up in price. We ordered a recommended off-menu item for the rack of lamb ribs and were surprised that it was $80. After going to chubby skewer in New York I feel like my expectation bar has been skewed, haha. This place does have a so called "grill" but all the food is cooked in the kitchen and the grill is just there to keep the meat warm with tea lights underneath. We got a little bit of everything brisket, pork belly, chicken, etc. I think our favorite was the brisket as it had a nice char flavor. However, it seems like all the rest of the meats and mushroom all have the same spice dry rub on them, I wish there was more variety in flavor. This place is always packed and we finally were able to get a table on a weekday without much wait. We did put our names on the waitlist before arriving. We tried a few kebabs and some of their classic dishes. -Signature fried pork: this fell flat, breading too thick and extremely sweet. - Fried eggplant was the star of the night, very fluffy and crunchy with a sweet tangy sauce. -Colorful mung bean noodles were a little too mushy for my liking. Peanut sauce it came with was fine. -Homemade dumplings were a disappointment, dumpling skins were broken when they arrived at the table. Filling was fine. -Fried pork ribs- tasted exactly like fried pork ribs, no sauce or much seasoning -Stir fried intestine, liver and stomach. I didn't try this, but family members enjoyed it. -Kebabs- We got different lamb and beefs one. Spicy seasoning was good but there was a lot of fat mixed into the kebobs. The waitress was extremely aggressive when ordering and kept telling us we didn't order enough food. With all the food we ordered for 5 adults (2 of which are seniors that don't eat a ton) she kept telling us that what we ordered is how much food two people normally order. And she wouldn't leave the table when we said we would take another look at the menu and order more if we needed. Pretty rude and unnecessary. I had a mixed experience here. The beef and lamb skewers were extremely soft, almost falling apart, with very little meat texture. Beef and lamb tasted quite similar, aside from color. The skewers felt more like they were pre-fried and then quickly torched, rather than grilled fresh from raw. After the meal, there was a noticeable baking soda-like aftertaste that lingered for a long time and made me uncomfortable. The grilled scallops were also very tough and hard to chew. This was my first time at Tonight Kabab in Edison, and I really enjoyed it. The staff were friendly, the restaurant was clean, and the food was flavorful. We ordered the bunch of beef, beef brisket, special chicken soft bone, and roasted eggplant. The eggplant was my favorite. I loved the garlic and noodles, and it had just the right amount of spice. I liked the flavor of the chicken, but I wish it was boneless because it would have been easier to eat. We went to tonight kabob when when the original place we were thinking of going ended up not being open. Having never tried the place, I'm always down to try a new place. From looking through the window it seems a little deceiving cuz I wasn't sure what to expect but the inside is a nice little sit down. If it's cold out I would try not to sit in a straight shot at the door because when people would come in and out I did get a chill. The food we got was okay. We got several skewers and they all tasted really good. My one complaint was the amount of fat on one of the skewers we ordered. I split them with my wife and maybe it was just the luck I had but the skewers had more fat than meat on them. Not one to like a lot of fat on my meat. This was definitely a turn-off for me. One ordering I felt a little rushed. The woman had come by three times and a very short amount of time when I had told her that I was waiting for my wife who had not sat down yet who had to run back to the car to get my son's water cup. They did bring a pot of tea which is a nice touch. However, once they dropped off the food they did not check on us until I flagged them down for the receipt. I've been eyeing this place for awhile and we finally came here for dinner. The skewers are great. I tried the chicken skewers and the meat was moist and tender. The twisted potato is also very good. It's got a crunchy exterior with a soft center. The other dishes were just ok. I tried the Mr and Mrs smith. . The beef was tasty with the sauce. At first I thought the beef was spoiled though because it tasted sour, but our waitress said it's because of the vinegar in the sauce. The tofu dish was good but nothing extraordinary. The thin sliced pork belly dish (can't remember the name) was too hard. It's hard to chew and it's not crispy. Our waitress pushed hard for us to get the meatballs. She said everyone gets that and it's their specialty. This dish came out room temperature, not even lukewarm. The meat was tender but we didn't expect this to be a cold dish. We decided to take it home and heat it up. In fact, none of our dishes came out hot, except the twisted potato. They were lukewarm at best. When we were almost done, I noticed some tables had a candle lit under their skewer box to keep the food warm. Our waitress never mentioned this to us. Go here for the kebabs which are top notch - lamb, chicken, pork are all standout hits with an addictive sprinkling of seasoning on top. The fish stew was good but the lamb stew was difficult to eat with the large bones and large amount of oil. Busy, popular spot that my friends saw on social media and wanted to go-- expect instagrammable kind of vibes haha. Food was fine. Nothing mind blowing in terms of flavor, quality, preparation, etc. but it's one of a kind in the area so that wins points! For me, these types of restaurants are selling an experience/concept over just food. It's very trendy inside with a somewhat chaotic flow of the dining room as servers run in circles with skewers of meat-- all surrounded by happy and laughing diners. We ordered a 12-15 types of skewers and it ended up being too much, plus the cold colourful mung bean noodles salad. If you love this type of cooking you'll find the food satisfies a craving. The mung bean noodles we only ended up tasting but nobody enjoyed the extra wide and thick style. The noodles were slightly overcooked and felt soggy while the sauce was very average. We happened to be in the area and stopped by when one of my friends recognized the restaurant. It was early in the evening but already packed inside. We used a QR code near the front door to conveniently sign up for their wait list. It took about 40 minutes for a table for 4 but there are SO MANY shops and other restaurants to wander in the same plaza we did not mind. read more

Always done for skewers and there's none around me that's good. Decided to stop by Edison for grocery shopping and found this gem. They opened at 11:30am and we got there at 11:50am - the place was 85% packed!! You know it's good when they just opened and the restaurant is packed already. It's a cute place, kinda dim for anyone who doesn't like to eat in a dark place. Servers were quick to take your order so make sure you know what you want to order. We ordered a bunch of meat skewers and enoki mushroom. It's pretty much all the same seasoning and topped with sesame. But everything was so tasty and cooked just right. Nice little place to hang out with friends and have some kabobs. Service was friendly (Chinese restaurant standards, which is usually not a high benchmark) but has a bit of a long wait for small party size (2 people). Out of everything we ordered, I was least happy with the clams, they were definitely not fresh; most likely previously frozen ones. All others were ok, prices on the higher end for kabobs but not outrageous. The two of us ended up paying $150ish with tips, but we had leftovers to bring home. PS, they offer 5% off if paying in cash, which we didn't know. Realistically, I wanted to give a 3.5 star for this place. Since there's no half star, I rounded down given the long wait. read more

Ambiance is quite nice inside but expect a wait of you go on the weekend or dinner time. Waiters can speak English but most speak mandarin. All are very nice. Food is served rather quickly which is nice if you are hungry. We ordered a few kabobs (gizzard, beef tongue, beef intestine, and beef tendon). All have the same seasoning and not overly spicy. I would pass on the beef tendon though as it was quite chewy and hard to swallow. Our favorite was the beef intestine as it went very well with the seasoning. There is a hot plate on the table that is kept warm with small candles, which they light as soon as you place your kabob order. I didn't find that it kept the kabobs warm at all, but they did only light 2 of the candles when there were many other candles there. The young chow fried rice didn't have much flavor but paired nicely with the braised pork belly, which was served over vermicelli. We found the sauce for the braised pork belly to be quite salty so the rice helped make it less salty. Our last and final dish was the stir fried string beans, which as you can see from my picture, was loaded with red chili peppers and peppercorn. We didn't realize it was a spicy dish nor that it came with peppercorn as we are not a fan of the peppercorn flavor. Overall, it would have been more fun if you could actually cook the kabobs yourself over a grill. There are many other dishes to try so if you like spicy, definitely try this place out. I only gave this place a 3 star as I wish there was more variety in each kabob order. read more

I'm going to have to give this place a 3 star roundup in rating. I'm not a picky eater to satisfy. The menu looked promising with its endless variety in selections. The pricing was just confusing, though. Some appetizers were $15, where seemingly more expensive specialties like clam noodle soup were $13. Not sure how pricing works here, but that's not the issue. As soon as my table and I put our last skewers down, the server charged to our table with a wireless transaction device and asked how we were paying. What if we were still talking? Or cleaning the last of our plates off, which had food on them? I'm not sure, but the night wasn't even busy and it really turned me off. As someone previously mentioned, there was quite a bit of fat mixed in with skewers. Fat is fine, but when you're paying premium prices for an elevated experience, you'd want more of the actual meat. Came on a Friday evening with a reservation for our group of six. The restaurant became super busy, so I'd recommend booking ahead. Craving some chinese bbq skewers? Edison's got a new place in town to tame your craving: Tonight Kebab. Parking is atrocious as ever in the Hmart Plaza, especially with the new mini plaza fully opened, but if you can hunt for some parking, try stopping by this place and try out some skewers! The waittime at dinner or weekday evenings and weekends can really build up, so I definitely recommend using the website or calling for a reservation. Coming in, the decor is modern chinese, with nice and comfy big seats. Note that the service is friendly, but mainly caters toward mandarin speakers. The menu is in English and Chinese though. I thought it was a cook-it-yourself type of skewer place, but it was not. They grill them fresh to order in the back, and just bring out to a warmer. I personally prefer to grill it myself, so you can control the char, but I can see how having someone grill it for you in the back might be easier, especially on hot days. Lambs 100% the best skewers. We also got beef, chicken gizzards, chicken skin, taiwanese sausage, king oyster mushrooms, and seitan. All were general good, but very salty, so highly recommend ordering rice with it. The chicken skin was sadly extremely salty, so we brought it home as leftovers to crisp it up. Other dishes included their fried eggplant (truly the delicate balance of crispy outside and fluffy inside!), beef stew (this soup was a 10/10 for its umami savoriness), and duck blood (if you never had blood before, this is one to try! The texture is very similar to silken tofu). Overall, ready your water pitchers and rice because you will be downing a lot of both, but worth the parking if the wait isn't too long. read more

Great new spot in the H Mart parking lot, right next to Meet Fresh. Got here at 5ish on a Sat night and had to wait 30 minutes for a table. When we left around nearly 7, the line was at least 15 deep. Definitely get here early if you plan to come for weekend dinners. Now on to the most important part, the food! I love northern Chinese food, and it's not easy to find them. I love love love meat skewers and they do them very well here. We opted for squid, beef and lamb ones. They were all well cooked and seasoned well (I asked for hot peppers on the side so the kids can enjoy them). Meanwhile, the sweet and sour pork was a huge hit and so perfectly crispy. New spot in the Hmart shopping center in Edison. 1.5 hour long wait at 12:30 on a sunday. After 2pm, It seemed to die down. Either come super early or after 2pm or on a weekday. Service could be better. Seemed disorganized and scattered. We say a while before they gave us water and the menus. Then it was another 10 minutes wait before they returned to take our order. Mind you, it had been about two hours since we first came in here by that time. Once the orders were taken, the food came Out fairly quickly. We were pleasantly surprised by the food. Everything we ordered was good. We loved all of the skewers. We had the 10 beef skewers. 5 lamb skewers. 3 fish tofu skewers. All great. Our fav was the grilled oysters $9 each. A little hefty on the price but still worth it. So delicious. We also loved the garlic eggplant. Next time we each want our own eggplant dish. There was a mixup with the final bill. They have our bill to our neighboring take and have their bill to us. Our bill was higher than theirs. No wonder they seemed confused but they still ended up paying the wrong bill. In the end they realized that they gave us the wrong bill so they printed out another bill. So it looks like even though we ended up with our correct bill, the neighboring table paid too much so make sure they give you the correct bill. Overall the food was good. I'd go back. The Crispy Sweat and Sour Pork Slices was also different enough than the Shanghainese version. The Four Crispies was an interesting concept of mixing cucumber cubes. roasted peanuts, black tree fungus, and preserved egg slices in a vinegar and soy sauce. However found the special beef kebabs a little chewy and the $39 special chicken cubes with mushroom soup not worth its price. The place was packed and had a 20 min wait for a two-person table. The inside is very nicely decorated and well lit. Not good for a very big group. Probably good for groups 2-8. Food was delicious. We got a few skewers (beef bunch, roasted bun, squid tentacles, gizzards, corn, lamb) we also got 3 hot entrees (shrimp, vinegar pork belly, fried rice) to share. The skewers were good, don't expect like big pieces of meat on there. They were cut up into small cubes. The shrimp was addicting. The shells are also edible and we ate them like chips. The vinegar pork belly was also really good. Reminded me of a Filipino dish but it's pretty much braised pork belly in a vinegar soy sauce sugar sauce. Very flavorful and served over Rice with bok choy. The fried rice was also good. As far as service. They should probably update their ordering to iPads at the tables or hire more people.. We were seated at the back of the restaurant. I noticed that the waitress serving us was wearing gloves, but she did not change them while cleaning the table, removing used skewers, and handling dirty plates and glasses. She continued using the same gloves when placing new plates, glasses, and serving food. Because of this, we felt there could be contamination, so we had to wipe our plates and glasses ourselves. It did not seem like the gloves were changed throughout the shift. I hope management can improve and maintain better cleanliness and food-handling practices. When we first entered the restaurant, I was surprised that there was a QR code, which was to wait in line. We went on a weekday, so we did not have to wait. I'm assuming if you go on the weekend, the QR code will be utilized. When we first sat down, the waitress insisted that we get the special, but we came for the meat sticks. I was also surprised that the chair was super comfortable. The menu can be a bit confusing, so just read out what you want. We ordered the fried rice, beef & lamb sticks, fish tofu, fish balls, enoki mushrooms, and green beans. Everything was great except the green beans will make the mouth numb. New BBQ and Chinese Dongbei Cuisine located in the Hmart plaza next to Tasty Moments. Great location with parking (if you can find any open spots). The servers were super attentive to our needs and recommended a great selection of food. The Lamb Spine Claypot is super flavorful, lots of lamb spine meat and boiled down with white radish. The skewers came out super hot and with a little sizzling of half fat half meat, the skewers were mouth watering tasty. Make sure to ask for the You Bian (油边) skewer, this was the king of the skewers!!! (This is pork meat btw) This along with the Claypot are their secret menu items. The Clam Vermicelli was also very well seasoned, packed with lots and lots of clam that gives it a fresh taste on top of the vermicelli noodles.
