Post watching the SF Gay Men's Chorus Dolly A Pride Show at Curran Theater yesterday, we ended up at Tonton after roaming. The restaurant is tucked away downstairs with no elevator. It was a late lunch and we were the only diners until people started coming. It is a small but clean restaurant serving ramen, bento boxes etc. They have many choices of ramen especially. There was one server. We ordered 2 Seafood Ramen and one with no green onions. The other friend got the Chicken Teriyaki Bento. We also got the Sake drink. The server said they don't allow split checks. They don't serve hot water. The ramen & bento box was delicious. We stayed awhile as we were chatting about the show. The server mentioned the Mexican restaurant above them. He said it is their sister restaurant. We said maybe next time we will try the sister restaurant. Very cool underground (literally) ramen spot near Union Square! They had some holiday decorations up at the time which was cute. Our group decided to sit at a secluded booth in the corner. I ordered the takoyaki, which came with 5 pieces. Our waiter was friendly but whenever she refilled the water she spilled quite often (faulty water jug?), and my bag ended up pretty drenched by the end of it lol, but I didn't mind that much because it's a cheap tote. When we went there, their bathroom was broken but the manager was really kind and even walked us upstairs to allow us to use the upstairs restaurants bathroom. This was my second time visiting Tonton this week and at first I was worried they were no longer there. Turns out, they've moved into the basement of their original spot. Not great for business (the sign was small). The space is much larger than the original and the food is still quite good. I got the Tan Tan Ramen which is a spicy ground pork style. I asked for medium spicy and a side of chasu (need my extra protein!). Since I was eating at my hotel nearby, the lady serving me very generously included more plain broth in case it was too spicy. Thankfully the spice level was spot on. I do prefer my broth to be a little more rich (think deep Tonkotsu flavor) but this did the trick to curb my ramen cravings. read more

A great find! After trying to get into 6 other restaurants without a reservation on a Sunday night at 7PM, we stumbled across Tonton and were so glad we did. Ton ton is comfort food. While the wait can get quite long especially on Friday nights, the food is definitely worth it. My go to is the katsu curry with chicken katsu. Treated my mom out for dinner here. We got the chicken karaage curry over rice and a seafood noodle soup. The portions are very generous. The chicken karaage was crispy and juicy, and the curry was nicely balanced by the sprig of pickled radish on the side. i went here on a whim with my partner because he was really craving ramen. they had solid reviews so we decided to give it a try. the place was empty when we arrived around 8p on a weekday, but by the time we left, it was packed! we ordered the pork gyoza, edamame, he got the chashu ramen and i got the spicy pork with added chashu. the flavor of the chashu ramen seemed to be lacking, it needed more depth of flavor. the chashu itself was pretty different than what were used to - it was so lean and a bit hard to chew. he didn't even finish his. he said it reminded him of sliced ham. the tantan ramen had a better flavor because of the spicy ground pork - i wish that flavor was more incorporated into the whole bowl. overall i'd say 3.6/5. i'd maybe come back but there are other places that have better broth and meat IMO. read more

Quick Summary: - Close to Powell, advice is to walk from Union Square - Great portions; entered hungry, left full and content This was marked as one of the places we wanted to try and finally the opportunity arrived. The weather was chilly cold, and we were starving. I could scarf up anything in a heartbeat, so that included fried food. It was the perfect time to try the fried pork cutlet dishes. We were walking out of the new IKEA store, and since it was an easy straight walk up Mason street to the restaurant, we took this route instead of going a loop around the more familiar streets we walk around the shopping area and Union Square. I would say, it's okay-ish if you are walking in a group, but the street didn't feel like a happy-go-lucky peaceful walk up the street. No tent encampments, but definitely a better idea to take a longer walk to Union Square and then walk up Geary. The destination to the restaurant is not exactly part of the food experience, but it gives a good idea on where it's like. The good thing about the restaurant is that is located close to Union Square and between large hotels, so there are more regular people walking about than the unruly ones. Inside the restaurant is small with a couple of seats here and there. The menu is categorized in large groups of curry, bento, and ramen. (I might have missed some of the categorizes, but my focus, narrowed by hunger, only recall the dishes with pork cutlet or ramen noodles). I was weighing on which to get: ramen or pork cutlet bento, but in the end I decided to get the bento. The wait didn't feel too long, and all of the dishes arrived around the same time. The bento box was very nice. I loved how there was cooked vegetables instead of a cabbage salad. There were also other vegetables side dishes like the potato salad and edamame beans. (For those who have never eaten an edamame bean before, you don't eat the outer husk. Using fingers you pinch the edge of the husk to pop the bean out) Wonderful cuts of pork cutlet were sliced into edible pieces, stacked in twos. Very good and could be a lot for some (I got some extra share from my relative who wasn't confident on eating it all). The outer crust is crispy and the inside was cooked soft and tender. A nice touch in my part is that some of the slices had a sliver of pork fat, a flavorful delight in that bite. Overall, I felt this restaurant did a great job at creating a balanced bento box.
