Been to Tony D's many times, always great. Tonight went off track and ordered the steak special, 14oz strip with blue cheese and red wine reduction sauce. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. Tony D's is our go-to spot for celebration dinners. They never disappoint. We always sit at the chef's table and it's pretty cool seeing our food prepared. It's like watching art. You might think that's a hyperbolic statement, but real foodies know what I'm talking about. There are a lot of affordable food options here; however, the specials are where this place really shines. Everything is worth its price and we can nearly guarantee you'll be satisfied. Our advice: 1. Go when you are celebrating something special (birthday, anniversary, engagement, valentine's day, Leif Ericsson day). 2. Request a seat by the chef's counter. You may miss out on the views of the river, but having a conversation with the people making your food and being involved in the process makes it worthwhile. Nice looking place service was pretty good. Went around lunch time was moderately busy. They did bring a big basket of bread out which was pretty fresh. First time I ever tried this place so it was somewhere I would probably stop back. I got a calamari salad which I will say was loaded with calamari. Ahhhhhhh. Tony D's. I wanted to give you more stars. But couldn't. My highlights of the meal: the server, Rena and the view. Service. On point. Rena showed up right away. Rena was so friendly and quick with drinks and our order. She was a delight The food... ehhhh. I met some friends. We shared a bottle of wine, the greens and beans, and all of us got the chicken Milanese. Now, I hate, HATE ordering the same thing as someone at the table. But I already checked out the menu and had my heart set on this. Let's go back though... greens and beans. Presentation was slopped in a bowl and lacked any flavor or color. All I wanted to do was add a little more salt and maybe some crushed red for at least something. It really tasted like nothing. And had maybe a couple pieces of sausage. Chicken Milanese. Looked beautiful, I'll give it that. The chicken was crunchy and juicy. And that's it. No flavor! The menu described roasted tomatoes, cucumber and parmesan cheese with balsamic vinaigrette. This is our go-to pizza place when we can't think of anything for dinner. Drinks are good with a decent amount of alcohol, and pizza portions are huge. Our go to is a cocktail, a beer and a large pizza to share. Bill usually ends up around $40 including tip, which isn't bad at all considering we usually have leftover pizza to take home. Sitting beside the oven gets you close to the hilarious and entertaining chefs. Oh Tony D's, I have a hard time figuring out if you're a restaurant or a club on weekend nights! Don't get me wrong....I love the vibrant atmosphere, but sometimes it's nice to not have to yell while at dinner with someone. It seems to be a frequent place for suburbanites that are having a midlife crisis or ones that think they're The Real Housewives of New Jersey. The food is usually great. I always enjoy the calamari and olive salads. I have been here a couple times for lunch and was pleased with the paninis. The pizza on the other hand, has always been inconsistent. Sometimes undercooked, sometimes overcooked, and sometimes perfect! When they get it right, it comes out lightly charred and delicious! Tony D's offers daily specials and I absolutely love the zuppa de pesce. My parents tend to get this when I take them here. During my last visit on Friday, I tried the Chilean sea bass special. I thought it was decent, but somewhat boring and it lacked seasoning. The fun part of my visit was when I got the bill stating the sea bass was $37...... Tony D's is a very popular pizza restaurant and bar located alongside the Genesee River just south of downtown. It's kind of the 'chic' area pizza establishment. While there are a growing number of places offering wood-fired or high heat gas-cooked pizza, I believe Tony D's is the only Rochester restaurant to cook their pizzas with a coal fire. They warn on their menu that their pizzas are "well done," and boy do they mean it! My pizzas were quite well done on the undersides. Personally, I believe this detracts from the flavor of the pie, but to each his own - and many do frequent Tony D's. My pizzas were both under-sauced and tasted quite dry. Additionally, there seemed to be a little too much crust compared to toppings. It was like eating a crispy cracker, and not so much a pizza. They tasted ok, but I really wasn't impressed, especially compared to other area wood-fired and high heat pizzas. So it's taken me awhile to finally get this review up...almost an entire month. Whoops! Well, late is better than never so here it goes... I was in the Rochester downtown area for a concert @ Blue Cross Arena, so we were looking for a place to eat before the show that wasn't too far from our hotel or the concert. After checking out the less than impressive small selection of choices we had, we ended up choosing Tony D's. We were a bit apprehensive of our selection, based on the prices (which seemed a bit steep), but were pleasantly surprised! I'll start off by saying that parking here is a bit confusing and hectic, but the plus is that it's free and off street so I guess it's worth it. Tony D's is located with a few other restaurants and businesses on the ground floor of an apartment building, so it's just a very crowded little spot. When you walk in, the bar is right by the door and it's a pretty loud little area, but the seating for dining is upstairs so that limits the noise level a bit. We were initially seated in the main dining room but we say that they were also seating people on their windowed porch area so we asked to sit there. I'm glad we did because the view of the city and the river was great! There were three of us, my mom, sister and I and we wanted to share a few different things family style. Some places don't like this, and even charge extra for it (wtf!), but our waitress offered to bring us extra plates so we could share before we even asked! A+ We got: the insalata mista - mixed greens with grape tomatoes, kalamata olives, ceci beans, red onion, hard boiled egg and mushroom with a house vinagrette chicken wings eggplant panini - roasted eggplant, fresh mozzarella and basil pesto and a Margherita pizza - mozzarella, marinara and basil. Holy moly...where to begin!? The salad, which might seem like a simple salad, was perfectly dressed and awesome. All the ingredients were fresh and it was a pretty big salad. perfect for us to share. The chicken wings were insane!! They were seasoned with Italian spiced and baked, then topped with the most obscenely delicious caramelized onions I've ever had (seriously, I could have eaten these by themselves), and came with two large slices of chaibatta bread. The Eggplant panini was actually our favorite. It was done perfectly, the chiabatta had a great crisp, the mozzarella was fresh, gooey and delicious and the pesto was perfect. The panini also came with olive salad. I was a bit apprehensive about the olive salad, but it was incredible and I would have been tempted to get some to take back for later if we hadn't had so many leftovers as it was. The pizza (which I suppose is the main dish of the place) was great. The basil was the real winner of this pie and really kicked up the flavor. Overall I would definitely say this place is worth the trip, and I would go back next time I'm in Rochester, if only to get something to go even - it's that good! read more

This place is so great! It's beautiful and has a huge bar with a great wine list and my favorite gin (Nolets!). When waiting for a table, you can sit in the covered outdoor patio which has a beautiful fire-pit. The menu has pizza and Italian specialties. We ordered pizza which was delicious, a meatball sub, wings and our favorite-greens and beans! The prices are extremely fair. We sat on the river which was really pretty. The servers were professional and very nice. We had a wonderful time and I really recommend this place. It would be a great place for a first date ;). Whenever I go home to Rochester, I eat here at least two times each visit so that I can eat as much of the menu as possible. Yes, the pizzas are as good as the other reviewers say, but don't stop there. It's all fantastic! My personal faves are the chicken wings (tossed in parmesan and smothered in caramelized onions. huh?), the meatball appetizer (two meatballs the size of oranges, topped with ricotta cheese and a thick tomato sauce. FuhGETaboutit!) and the roasted red pepper antipasti. The specials are the real gems at this restaurant, though. Make sure someone at your table gets one... or two. The portions are monstrous, so get ready to eat and take home some leftovers... and eat it all family style so you can try it all. A group of friends and I went to Tony D's for dinner to celebrate a birthday. It was jam packed on a Friday night so definitely make reservations if you don't want to wait. Tony D's has a great atmosphere, and a well rounded crowd (old & young!) Our waitress was great and handled our big party really well. For Tony D's first timers, we went a little over board on the food--appetizers & pizzas galore! We started with the arancini & meatballs. HIGHLY recommend the arancini (rice balls with pesto sauce) they have a very different taste mmmm, and the meatballs are not your average meatball, they are triple the size! and delicious. The appetizers were my favorite part- A+. I had heard that Tony D's is known for their pizza so my boyfriend and I split the Allesandro (meatball pizza) and the special which was an artichoke pizza with mozzarella. If you like REALLY thin crust pizza, then this is your place. This is more of a cut your pizza with a fork type of place. Our pizzas were pretty burnt and the crust was rock solid. Their chicken wings were good and different tasting, not like your normal wings. All in all, the drink selection is great (blood orange margarita for me!) and the atmosphere is fun & vibrant. Ayyyy it's a pizza pie! Rochester has their fair share of pizza shops and restaurants that claim they have coal fired pizza. This isn't your pizza tossing, apron wearing, Italian screaming pizza parlor. Tony D's is the only place I have gone to where the pizza tasted just like the kind i had when I was in Naples, Italy. Sometimes I just sit and stare at the menu at work picking out what I am going to get next time I go there. I have always had a good meal there and this is the ONLY place I will wait over and hour to sit. If you are not with a big group, then sit at the chefs station and watch them cook! It gets pretty hot because of the pizzas cooking, but its worth it! In my eyes the only two things you need to eat when you go to Tony D's are the Margarita Pizza and the oven roasted wings! So simple, but sooooo delicious. I wish they had some type of blue cheese or aioli sauce to dip the wings in, but it really isn't necessary. They even have a heated out door area that you cans sit in any time of the year. I have been wanting to try Tony D's for some time now. In the past, all efforts to plan ahead had been road blocked by the fact that they don't take reservations for parties less than six. This past Friday we seemed to luck out and get a table practically upon entry. It was 6:30 so I was pleasantly surprised to be seated within minutes. The hostess was very friendly. We were seated at a table overlooking the river which was really nice. I can't wait to come back in warmer weather when they open up the glass enclosure. It would be so nice to have dinner there in the warm open air of summer. The food was fabulous! We had the special calamari appetizer and an order of wings to start. So good. For dinner my boyfriend and two other friends ordered the special fillet mignon and unfortunately his was well done instead of medium. No problem! Our server took the meat on a separate plate so he would still have the sides to eat while he waited. She returned in what seemed like two minutes with another fully plated entree perfectly cooked. I sampled it. His meal was delicious. The best fillet I've tasted in a long time. I had the Bianca pizza with spinach added. It was good. The coal fired pizza that Tony D's is known for is excellent. My favorite is the Carciofi, which has tons of artichokes, goat cheese, and sundried tomatoes. I also appreciate the "choose your own toppings" option if you want to customize your pizza. The small dinner salads are decently sized (I couldn't finish mine knowing I had an entrée coming). It was nicely presented with a mix of field greens, different types of tomatoes, chick peas, and toasted garlic bread. I wish the appetizer selection wasn't so limited for me, as the only meatless starters are salad (and half of those have meat), and the roasted peppers. I'm not a fan of peppers, but one of my dining companions ordered them. It appeared to be the same ingredients as the small dinner salad with some red peppers on top. There is definitely room for creativity here. Reservations are highly recommended. Even with an 8pm reservation, my group of 7 waited almost 30 minutes to be seated for dinner. We were seated on the patio overlooking the river, which is a big draw for Tony D's, but on a very hot and muggy night, the open windows were not cutting it to cool us down. That and the patrons seated around us seemed to be hammered drunk and were very loud. Credit must be given to our server who was extremely attentive and patient despite having to yell over other diners. Pricing is reasonable for the ample portions, especially because you'll probably have leftovers. If you don't mind the annoyance of trying to find parking in Corn Hill, it's worth dining here for the delicious pizza. Or maybe try take out! read more

I am giving Tony Ds a 3.5-4. The food was very good. The seafood salad was a delight. The rigatoni with chicken cutlet was very good but needed more chicken. We sat on their outdoor patio because it was a nice summer night and that is where the disappointment began. The outdoor patio is very small, which I understand can't be helped. However, the ground was filthy with dirt and litter and the windows surrounding us were filthy as well. We always liked the pizza at Tony D's and that was what we thought we were going to order....until we heard the specials. It was early on a Saturday around 5pm and the place was just starting to fill in. As usual, it was loud even with few people...I do like the restaurant but it's hard to have a conversation with the acoustics. Enough of that, to the food. We decided on the 18 oz strip which was one of the specials. It consisted of: Creek stone farms Eighteen oz dry aged boneless NY strip. Sweet pepper butternut risotto with Andouille sausage. Tuscan Kale. Steak topped with Sundried tomato Gorgonzola compound butter. The risoto was outstanding and the Andouille sausage was smoky with a little kick. The kale was kale...I'm not a fan of kale regardless of how good it is. The steak itself was perfectly cooked to medium rare and melted in my mouth. I normally don't think of Tony D's as a place for anything other than a quick bite but this meal certainly changed my mind and the $42 price seemed well within range for the meal read more

This was my first time dining here since the change in ownership (I know, I'm a little late). There was definitely some updates in decor and the atmosphere was modern and classy. Our waitress was prompt and friendly. It was impressive that she could remember and recite every beer they carry (which is a lot). There weren't too many changes to the menu (why fix what isn't broken?!) and everything my table ordered tasted amazing... even better than I remembered. We started with arancini which had a good crispy shell and a cheesy center. They were topped with a red sauce and pesto. For my main course I got the pasta and prosciutto dish which had a cream sauce and peas. I love how they used shell pasta which meant the sauce snuck in to every shell and every bite was creamy. My husband and a friend got pizzas. The crust was perfection, crispy yet maintained the doughy texture when you bite in to it. The toppings were plentiful and seasonings were great. I can rave enough about how good the food is here. I will definitely be returning ASAP. The only reason I didn't review this at five stars is because of the noise. They sat every table next to each other along the patio. While the view was nice, it was congested and I could hear the conversation at the table next to me better than I could hear the person across my table. We went here on a Saturday night. It was 7:30 before we got there. Parking is a real bummer, there is street parking and a very small lot. The weather was nice so the 50 min wait was ok because we sat outside and had a couple of glasses of wine. Good wine selection, a bit steep on some, expect to pay 2x what the bottle is retail. There is inside and outside dinning areas. We were sat on the inside, next time we will ask for the outside if weather permits. The inside is very noisy and is very difficult to hear the wait staff explain the specials. We had the calamari app and it was very good. We each ordered pizza and both were excellent with left-overs to take home. Don't expect this to be just a pizza joint, it has a very small, limited menu but the waitress presented us with many specials that included several cuts of steak, seafood, and pasta dishes. Our Waitress was very attentive and the manager was around a couple of times also checking up on our satisfaction. So don't be put off by reading the menu on-line, they have much more to offer. This would not be a place for you to go with a group and expect to hear each other unless you were outside along the river. Also be prepared to wait because it is popular. read more
