Tony D's was amazing! We walked in at 7pm on a Friday without a reservation and as a party of 5 were given the option of being seated at the Chef's table or waiting an hour. We chose the Chef's table and it was even better than we could have expected! The Chefs were kind and nice and watching them prepare all of the specials was entrancing. For our first time there we figured that we had to order the coal fired pizza. We tried the Margherita, the Bianca, and the Alicia and all of them were way better than expected. The 14" pies are enough to split with people and are light and crisp. The Margherita was pretty authentically Italian with nice tart sauce and chunks of mozzarella. The Bianca is exactly what a white pizza should be. And my favorite, the Alicia, was next level! From the spinach to the bacon, it was light and succulent. We definitely will be coming back for more pizza as well as some of the other menu items (paninis and specials). The food was great enough for a second visit but the people were even better. The owner was amazingly nice and came to check in on us, the hostess asked us on our way out how we enjoyed the Chef's table, and everyone working there was kind and helpful. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Portions are very sizable here and prices are decent when you consider that each meal is actually 2-3 meals worth of food IF you can take it home for leftovers. My partner ordered shrimp scampi, which came in the form of a bowl full of shrimp and garlicky lemon sauce, with nothing else. My absolute favorite restaurant!! Always an amazing meal, outstanding service, and a really fun atmosphere too. The portions are huge, I always enjoy the leftovers the next day. I was super excited when they expanded the menu to add Classics. The "gotta haves" like Chicken Parmesan, Chicken Marsala, Spaghetti with a Meatball, Cavatappi with Shrimp and a bunch more. They also have daily specials, like Swordish, Zuppe Di Pesce, and the Filet is the best anywhere. So many choices, there's something for anyone. One of the things I miss most from back home was having girls night at Tony D's. A lot of fun nights, we ordered a few appetizers, of course the Meatballs, a pizza and we shared. I'm actually eating here right this moment as I right the review. Hey Deonna! I just moved to Rochester, and there's not too many good places to eat at. When I came here, I didn't know what to expect. I've been here a total of four times and every time I come, they don't disappoint The aranchini is god sent. Never even knew it existed until I came here. And honestly I'm afraid to try it from any other restaurant. I always get the pepperoni pizza which is enough for two people. It's Italian food but not your typical Olive Garden type of feel. There's nothing I've had that wasn't nasty. Love everything they have here. They do get packed during the weekend and on Friday nights. My only recommendation is staff the bar area better when it gets packed. Can't wait to come back read more

I'm pretty sure you have to be completely incompetent to be a host there. I order chicken Caesar salads all the time i know they come in 2 separate containers. When originally given me i got chicken and some lettuce in one container. No dressing so croutons....you want me to pay $17 for chicken and lettuce?! I had to ask for the rest and it was literally just separated..still no croutons somehow that was difficult to insert once the separated them. I'm not sure a salad is so difficult but if that is i can only imagine what else is complicated. This isn't the first front end incident. The last time i was charged for an order that wasn't mine. She forgot about my drink that I saw sitting at the bar when I went to use the bathroom and when I came back, I still didn't have it until I had to ask her for it. She didn't keep our waters full and a girl that was with us (who is 8.5 months pregnant) asked for more water and it took the server 10 minutes to bring it over. We are huge fans of this place. I've never had a regular meal here per se, but that's because the best thing to do is to just order a bunch of different things. If you're a first timer, you need to try the arancini, wings, and a pizza. I'd stick with pizzas with red sauce, especially the Lucia, but as long as you like a nice NY style pie (rather than the thick WNY style) you'll love it. The wings are ridiculously unique, and they come with caramelized onions and focaccia. I could eat the bread with the onions all night if you let me. I'm a meatball snob, and those are good here. I love-love-LOVE Tony D's. I would go there wayyyy more often if it wasn't packed all the time. I've seriously driven there probably three times, walked in, saw the wait (1hr-1hr and a half) and left. Due to this restaurant's crazy popularity, I've never actually gotten a table, I've just sat at the bar, haha, but I like sitting at the bar better anyways, tbh. c; Anyways, the two lady bartenders working there when I've been there are both awesome! They have a great selection of wine, and usually have a rotating white and a red on special each night. When I'm here, the boy and I usually go the build-your-own-pizza route. It's true it can be expensive (maybe $3 a topping?), but I've never exceeded $20 for a large pie. We usually pair it with the roasted peppers, which are delicious and fresh, but also huuuuuge. We can never finish the portion they give us. I really love the simple green salad they serve along with it with balsamic and grated cheese. I'd probably order it alone if it was available on the menu! If I'm successful at landing a table someday, maybe I'll try some of the entrees. :) read more

I am always hesitant to leave one star reviews. But Tony D's deserved it without a doubt. This was the biggest disappointment ever in Rochester. My friends and I traveled from Geneseo to come here. We've been here before and thought it had a good ambience. This experience was not good. It was busy and the service was horrible. We each ordered a pizza for ourself. We also got a couple appetizers. Each of the three pizzas were burnt and absolutely disgusting. This pizza was worthy of absolutely nothing but the garbage. The server never checked on us after delivery of the food. I was not enjoying my pizza and wanted a side sauce to go along with it. After over fifteen minutes has passed, I had to wave her over and make the request. She brought me the blandest (out of the can) marinara sauce I have ever tasted. It did not make the pizza any better. At this point we tell her that the pizza was absolutely burnt. Her excuse was that she has seen much worse. When the bill came, I was charged a few dollars for a very small side of the marinara sauce. I would strongly advice from eating at Tony D's. Beware! Refills on soft drinks are not free and the manager, Toni, is RUDE. My family and I went to this restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. While the music, food, and overall ambience was very nice, my experience was ruined by the fact that the waitress didn't inform us that refills on our soft drinks were not free. Consequently, we were charged $7.50 for two people to have two refills each on their diet cokes. The way it was presented was deceptive. The waitress kept asking the guys in the group if they wanted her to "put in another order for a soda." I was a little suspicious when I heard her say that, but we all just thought that was an odd way of saying can I refill your drinks. At no point did she state that the refills weren't free. When I spoke to the manager about this she seemed uninterested and blamed the owner for the policy. Upon my insistence she removed the extra refills from the bill, but was snappy and curt about it. Since we were at the POS register, I asked her if I could go ahead and pay for the check there, and she told me in a rude way to go back to my table and that my waitress would pick up the check when she returned. I just think that unless I am sitting at a bar, refills on soda should be free at a restaurant. At the least, the wait staff should be trained to tell its patrons that refills aren't free. To make matters worse, the glasses the drinks came in were narrow, filled with mostly ice. The soft drink refill policy is very tacky and is a bad reflection of the owner and his/her apparent disconnect from understanding what customers want and customer service. Had a great time dining at Tony D's tonight. On a whim the decision was made to go out some where fun. I said "hey Tony D's is cool, let's go there". So glad we did. The fun started with checking in and having a seat at the bar. Ah, the Gin Spritz sounds delish....and it was. The wife got the "Rasberry". A short time later we were called to be seated. When we checked in we chose to sit at the chef station. It was a new experience for me and wow, those guys work hard but still are friendly enough to make a little small talk. I highly recommend, if you are a party of two, to sit there. The meal started with the arincini for me and greens and beans for the wife. Arincini was crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside with a yummy pesto and marinara. The greens were very flavorful with plenty of sausage. The wife said it was the best she has had and by the way, it was huge, a meal in itself. For dinner I ordered the seafood special, Zuppa di Pesce. It may have been a meal for two. Little neck clams, rock lobster and a lot of shrimp that were so big they may have well been teenage lobsters. It was all excellent. I loved it and finished the feast. Being a little too excited we also ordered the large meatball and mushroom pizza. You can't go to Tony D's without getting meatballs. Needless to say, half of pizza and a portion of the greens and beans came home with us. My drink choice also changed to a nice Malbec while the wife got another "Rasberry" (basically a Rasberry martini). A wonderful meal and a great time. The stars of the night were the chefs. I know you, you know me (sometimes) and you have a good thing going for you so please tell me why, why, why on god's green you would want to mess up a great thing with the ONE thing I despise, OLIVES. To be fair, I can make room in my life and on my plate for food that I don't care for (i.e. white onions, beets, celery, #thingsjamiehates) I can gladly eat around these things or sometimes just hold my breath and swallow. I also LOVE brussel sprouts, I mean, I deserve some points for that right? Oh yeah, I also don't eat meat (insert embarrassed emoticon). So I get it, I'm a curmudgeon when it comes to food but I absolutely cannot live in world in which I must share a perfectly prepared dinner with olives. You heard me, perfectly prepared. Tony D's Coal Fired Pizza serves up some phenomenal looking dishes, perfectly presented and at the perfect temperature but if you and I share the same pallet, you'll be hard pressed to enjoy any of these fine dishes. Let's dissect (if you're like me, that's what you'll end up doing to your food) some of the menu options: 1) Arancini - Fried balls of rice and cheese and of course, prosciutto. 2) Mixed Greens salad - olives 3) Calamari salad- olives 4) Nicoleta pizza-olives 5) Tuna panini-olives And numbers six through eleven, all meat. Sure, I could ask for any of these items sans the olives (except for the calamari salad as it's all prepared as one) but I'm trying to make a point here, be an equal opportunity food-ist Tony and ease up on the olives! I can get past all of the meat options, this is an Italian restaurant after all, but even the Sunday Sauce has meat in it, can you pretty please think about making a meatless sauce (Marina, Vodka, alfredo) so I can enjoy my Sunday carbing? This place only gets three stars, these stars represent the three meals I can actually eat here, without altering my order. In all fairness though, Tony D's performed very well for other Yelpers, so if you're in to olives and meat like 90% of the population you'll do just fine here. Real rating: 4.3 Tony D's is an upscale, Italian restaurant to my surprise. I just never realized how spacious the venue is. The bar is located to the right as you enter into the building, and the dining area is upstairs with additional seating outside. Located in the Corn Hill area, it's a prime location to see the dirty Genesee River. But still gorgeous nonetheless! I ordered the Meatballs under the appetizer menu. For $14, you get two large meatballs. Cooked and marinated well in their traditional red sauce. The meal could have used a little more spice, but I suppose if you're going for the traditional Italian meal, you might not necessarily get that. Unfortunate, but I used some of the red pepper flakes which proved to be a decent substitute. My friend ordered their classic cheese pizza. By far, one the best I've ever had. I also knew it was great because I had it the next day for leftovers. Cold pizza, to be clear. Overall, I had a great time at this place. The food was good, but the real stars go to the employees. They were helpful, friendly, and funny. Especially since we sat at the bar where the food was being prepared. The cooks definitely have a sense of humor I can get used to. Tony D's is a beautiful and all-around appealing restaurant on the Genessee River. Sporting riverside dining within a heated and glass enclosed patio, you can enjoy scenic views year-round. The menu is very reasonably priced and often complemented by a wonderful selection of daily specials. Pizzas here are generally very good; the crust is fantastic and the toppings very fresh. Wines by the glass are reasonably priced and accessible. The bar is at street level and suffers in the winter when the front door opens and you're accosted by the arctic rush, but hey that's Rochester. The main dining room, up a few steps, is decorated like a modern trattoria with an open kitchen. It always smells fantastic. We like to go on weeknights or on Sunday nights when it's not so crowded. You can't make a reservation for a party less than 6. Excellent service every time. read more

Hats off to the people that got this spot opened after the unfortunate passing of the founder. Waiter, Zack, gets a five. Professional & just spot on. Pie was a one star on this visit. I had the Lara. The pie features Marinara Sauce, Fried Eggplant, Burrata & Capicola. As a rule, sauce should be uncooked if it is to be presented on a pizza. Why? Because the tomatoes were cooked to get the skin off them when they were canned. So if you put marinara on a pizza ( which is cooked) you are exposing tomatoes to their third cooking process. No flavor, no pop, no savory, no nada. Capicola tries to be the salt and the body for this pie but it is poorly distributed. Burrata is lost. And the minus three is the Eggplant. I got heartburn so bad from this crap that I needed a roll of extra strength Tumms and a 16oz Pepto-I'm-miserable-Cocktail to get me back to the Thruway. As Zack said; "These are still all of Tony's Recipe's with a few additions". I do not disagree but you need to make it with passion. Start by changing the fryer oil if you are going to fry eggplant for pizza and then try salting it, soaking it in milk and cooking it properly before you toss it on a pizza. Just a major fail. I want a pleasurable memorable pizza experience (Bianco, Dough, Molinari, Zoni's, Pepe, Patsy's, Luzzo, etc...) Not a miserable case of heart burn. On another note; I did not order the wings because they are $18 a dozen. I am sorry but that is bull shimy-me-haha, or BS if you live in Rio Linda. I have had coal fired wings in NYC, NJ, PA, NY, MA, CT, NH, FL, VA, DC and RI. Standard price is $12 for a dozen. You are losing business on this point. When you're all but married to someone who considers pizza to be the most important food group of all, and have had pizza from just about every place in Rochester, it's hard to find somewhere that really stands out--but Tony D's does just that. The food is excellent; definitely better than anything you could get at the corner take-out place. There's a whole long list of (mostly non-pizza) specials in addition to the normal dinner menu, for those who want something other than pizza. Prices are fairly reasonable, and two people can make a meal out of one pizza. It should go without saying that you shouldn't go here expecting something like Pizza Hut or Papa John's, though. The menu states quite clearly that the pizzas are "well done" and they're not kidding. The crust does come out very very dark, especially on the bottom...ours was borderline charred, which I personally don't mind, but my significant other wasn't quite as enthusiastic about that. I also got the insalata mista (mixed greens salad) which was awesome. The place looks gorgeous--awesome décor and I bet the view of the canal is really pretty in the summertime--but it is not the place for a quiet, intimate meal. We didn't know anything about the place when we decided to try it, so we didn't realize there was going to be a big bar when you first walked in the door. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if that's your thing, but the entire place was so obnoxiously loud that it was flat out impossible to have any sort of conversation--we could barely hear the waitress even though she was standing a foot away from us. I also was NOT a fan of the floor plan...way too crowded and close. The tables look like they're scattered haphazardly and even though we were seated along the wall, that setup didn't win any points with me, either, because it was one of those deals with one big long bench against the wall, then individual tables, then chairs on the other side of the tables. Meaning that you're pretty much sitting side-by-side with the person at the table next to you. If you like being out and about and social then this would be a cool place to hang out, but if you're somewhat reserved/introverted (like I am!) it's not really the kind of place that you'll feel in your element, trust me. The wait staff were all friendly and courteous...but service itself was a bit slow. And we went on a weeknight, so it wasn't like it was a Friday night or anything. I had a bad experience at Tony D's this evening. It is not a good place to take a group of people. The food was delicious however the service was not up to par. We had a group of 9 people for a birthday and it's a Monday so the place was not busy whatsoever. When sat, we told them we wanted separate checks. The bill came at the end all on one for 9 people. When I approached the server to ask him if he could separate it out since we all brought debit or credit cards, he said they can not do that, but if I wrote out whose was which meal that he could charge each card. I went back to the table, organized everyone's payments, wrote out which item each person ordered, and then brought it back to him. When he looked at it, he somewhat shortly told me that it had to be a specific dollar amount or he was just going to ball park it to include tax. I responded that I don't understand why it is our responsibility to figure out how much tax each person would be charged also and not theirs. To this he responded "well I don't see why you need to nickle and dime it." I told him that while everyone is friends at the table, we're all paying for our own stuff. He then explained to me that it is restaurant policy to NOT split the bill. I worked at a pizza restaurant myself for over 2 years, just 2 years prior to this. We were always able to separate out bills, split specific items, and it is not conducive to bigger groups if they are not willing to provide this simple service. This was always done post-sending the order to the kitchen so as to not send the kitchen separate orders (Aloha POS, if you're reading this Tony D's... look it up). If their software program does not allow for it then they need to update it. They are going to lose service of people who try to split checks if they can not provide this service. The setting on the Genesee River is really beautiful although parking can be a bit of an issue. So we have eaten here over 40 times (not exaggerating, I checked our transaction history for the past 3 years), and I'm finally reviewing. We live in Corn Hill and often get takeout from Tony D's. We also have eaten in the restaurant a ton of times at different times of day and with different types of groups. I will go through the menu items we have tried. Pizza: very good, well done (lightly blackened) crust, do try their specials pizzas (especially one with unusual meats & cheeses, or the veggie one they sometimes have). Coal fired cooking provides a great flavor. We also love the Bianca base and always have them add prosciutto to it. Delicious! Make sure you receive the size you ordered (once in a while sizing has been off; they are receptive to comments and have adjusted the bill). Do get the large pizza, the medium isn't worth the price, and any leftovers you have reheat well in a toaster oven/regular oven (not microwave!). Sunday Sauce: so good it deserves its own section in this review. 3 meats, minimum, are always included: pork, sausage, and meatball. I swear I've gotten veal once or twice as well. We order this once a month probably, and have always enjoyed it. For takeout make sure to check your container and make sure you got enough pasta (we have always gotten plenty of sauce & meat). The pasta is not overcooked. The sauce is rich & spicy. Also, the portion is HUGE. It's like $20 per plate, but expect to take some (usually half) home! It also reheats really well in a microwave. One improvement would be adding shaved chunks of parmesan, which we do at home when we get takeout. This may be obvious, but this dish is only served on Sundays! Arancini: we love it, but it needs to be served with seriously more sauce, especially marinara, than they give you. Do ask for extra marinara, and you might get it. Don't ask for a side (they will def charge you, which we think is total BS given the volume of sauce they must make and the quantity you get). The arancini come in a 3-ball serving size. If you only have 2, 4 or 5 people (or even 1!) and only want 1 ball each, don't hesitate to ask for the exact number you want; they will do it and split the price appropriately, which I love. They are large balls, so be aware that it is a filling appetizer! This dish doesn't reheat great. Warm, roasted vegetable salad: insanely good. Love the cheese and almonds! Great portion size. We recommend getting 1 large pizza (medium isn't worth the price) and 1 salad to share for 2 people. This dish also doesn't reheat great, so eat it when it's in front of you; you can always reheat the pizza later. Greens & beans are the best we've had in Rochester. We love the super garlicky sauce and rich delicious broth. The escarole is well-cooked; beans are really creamy. Also not the best for reheating. Cesar salad is really good and refreshing. Wings are grilled and very unique. My husband enjoys them (I'm not a huge wing person). Sauce they're coated with (garlic parm) is very good too. Not too much of it. Meat & pasta specials: We just have two words on these: try them. There is a LOT of variety. Call ahead and ask them what's being served tonight if you want something in particular. A veal dish they've had once in a while is one of the best off-menu dishes I've had at the restaurant. We have never tried the steak, it seems expensive and isn't what we go there craving. Our brother likes the seafood specials, which they frequently have. Our whole family loved a sloppy joe special they had once. It was served on amazing delicious brioche. It was served on a Monday, but we've only seen it that once. The specials list can be quite long, especially on busy nights of the week. Ask your waiter to repeat if needed. It would be better if they printed menu inserts. Cocktails: good, but too pricey for Rochester. Please, let's be real. Wine: way overpriced, especially compared with a place like Next Door Bar & Grill (which has a much nicer & bigger selection and fairer restaurant prices) but at least it's pretty good wine. I like a Malbec by the glass I've had numerous times. I think there are 2 on the menu, I believe I choose the 2nd one. They need more NYS wines; they have a tiny local selection, which I think is sad. I realize our Rieslings, etc. aren't ideal with Italian food, but they are good wines and sometimes it's just what you want. Also if you go just for drinks (as many, many people do - they have a busy bar!) you should be able to get anything. Setting & ambiance: LOUD, especially once the bar picks up at night. Also, they play the music too loud, in my opinion. Try to get a table outside in the summer (they have heaters if it's cool). The view of the river & city is quite nice & relaxing. Also nice to have a drink while you wait in the front of the restaurant (they annoyingly don't take reservations for groups under six people), but sometimes there are smokers out there, and it's gross. I came here yesterday with my stepdad. At first we immediately felt the "how do they know each other" thoughts by other patrons. We asked to sit on the patio and the view is gorgeous. That being said I didn't really hear anything he said during the conversation. Instead we heard our neighboring tables who felt the need to talk all over each other. Didn't we all learn one person talks at a time? Any ways we found it comical and was still able to have a conversation.. it just took some effort on the hearing skills. Our waiter came very quickly and we ordered a small lucia pizza and an order of the wings. The portions are so huge that together we still didn't finish half of the pizza and wings. This place is meant for sharing and days of left overs. Our order came very quickly and we chowed down. The pizza was delicious and had the perfect crust. It wasn't just only spicy, it had a pop of flavor that was enjoyed. The wings are also prime and not like regular chicken wings. It doesn't have a coat of sauce on it. Instead it has a strong flavor with onions and flavoring piled on top. I would come back for the pizza. However, I'd visit at an odd time so then I'll actually be able to hear the other people I am with talk. read more

The view on the patio is gorgeous overlooking the river. The staff are friendly and always helpful. The pasta is decently sized portions and very tasty. The pizza blew my mind thoughm. Was looking for a good pizza place and I found it. Coal fried thin crust pizza. I had the classic magharita with sausage added and oh my it was delicious. Very disappointing. The food just wasn't good here at all. To start, the restaurant has very limited parking. It is herded into another plaza with a few other restaurants and shops. This occasion was for lunch, I can't imagine an evening. Secondly, the pizza was awful. Cheese was running and the sauce was sour. I ordered pizza with roasted red pepper. The red pepper had no flavor either. The crust tasted bland and trust me I have tasted coal fired.... This was a regular rinky dink pizza with a $20.00 flare. Just awful. read more

It's consistently crowded and generally very noisy. You might have a long wait on weekend nights and Sunday evenings when they serve Sunday sauce for thei pasta but the wait has always been worth it. The pizza is thin and the crust can come out very, very dark. Now I like that but not everyone does. It's just the incredible heat of the oven which they never shut off. Try the Aracini for an appetizer if you like things deep fried or the meatballs if you like something hearty (and yes, the wings are good too). The menu is simple and that allows them to not miss a beat. Their recent expansion has allowed them to add but a few more tables but the bar is really hopping. Always on my lists for good, reasonably-priced food. Not necessarily a place I'd take a client because of the noisy atmosphere but definitely a place I'd take friends. Don't be picky about table in or out. If there's room at the food bar, that's often one of best seats. read more

Stopped in for dinner on a work trip. Sat at the bar - bartender was very chill and easy to talk to. Had a couple of solid and stiff manhattans. Ordered one of their pizzas with spicey sausage. Loved it. The crust was crispy but with a bit of a fluffy crust. Toppings were flavorful - especially the aforementioned sausage. Good service, good food, and strong drinks. read more
