We had such high hopes for this spot. Looks trendy and the pictures are decent. But no luck. The inside itself is strange for a downtown establishment. Super high ceilings, few tables and chairs that look like they were rescued from the side of the road. The cooling area in the center back of the room. Some cool graffiti art I guess. We got the pork belly bao. That was tasty with many toppings but barely any pork belly. Also the beef pho. A couple bites/ sips and my husband could not eat it (that NEVER happens). He tried adding more spices but the broth was bland and the noodles just tasteless. The beef was very tough it was hard to chew. He just felt there was something wrong with it so didn't even let me have any as I am pregnant and avoiding food poisoning. We are foodies so this was disappointing and a big waste of money. It's a shame. Probably won't risk going back and trying something else. :( read more

There was exceptionally polite service here. I got the Thai fried rice but it was missing ingredients like the cucumbers and there were hardly any eggs. I got a huge portion and it came out fast but I really missed having eggs. They have Vietnamese iced coffee there which was the biggest one I ever drank and it was delicious. Two thumbs up for the ambiance because the place is huge. I feel like a lot of restaurants get a bunch of business via DoorDash these days so there are people who are really hungry and hunger makes the best sauce. Toothpick has really unique menu items but the execution didn't quite hit the mark I hoped for. We tried: Bulgogi cheesy tots: bulgogi beef atop cheesy tater tots - sounded like an incredible choice. But the flavor combination of rich cheese sauce and Korean BBQ flavor was too dissonant for my palate. A really good cold weather/hangover cure option for sure. Spring rolls: pretty standard, about the same quality as you'd get from your usual Chinese takeout restaurant. Impressively crispy even though we got takeout! Pork belly bun bowl: Overall a very light dish, great flavor profile, a nice complement to the heavy cheesy tots. My favorite of the items we tried! We finally made it over to Toothpick in Torrington. We will definitely be going back! The food was amazing, service was fantastic, portions were very generous! We loved sitting in the window and watch the happenings in downtown. We shared the Bulgogi cheesy tots, I said I could literally eat those every day! Then we had the chicken & waffles and the bulgogi beef bowl. Everything was delicious! I was surprised at how big the portions were, we had leftovers to take home which I always love. First try at this joint and it's pretty tasty. Was not disappointed at all. Ingredients are fresh and the menu has quite the variety . We ordered take out and it was very well packaged (with care and not just thrown in a box like most places). That is a HUGE thing for me. If I'm paying the same price for dine-in service, then I expect that the same effort goes into the take out presentation. We traveled 15-20 minutes home and it kept its quality. I ordered fish Bao and cauliflower tacos. Both were tasty but I probably shouldn't have ordered both at the same time seeing they tasted pretty similar. Both cauliflower and fish were fried, so you had that flavor , along with the sauce and toppings being relatively the same. I think if the cauliflower had a taco seasoning tossed with it , it would have taken that taco to the next level for vegetarians. Otherwise it was good and would order them again. It's very light, yet filling at the same time. I also got the Corn Elote. This was ok. The corn had that stale chew to it like it had either been dried out or sitting in the warmer for awhile. That was the only off putting thing about it. If the corn was more fresh, it would have been a perfect side. My husband got the chicken po boy and said it was good. It was a very large piece of chicken. A very significant serving along with fries. This is enough for someone with a big appetite. He also got the veggie spring rolls. I didn't try one, but the smell reminded me of the 80s la Choy egg roll bites as a kid. Looked fresh and certainly crispy, but the inside had that cooked down cabbage appearance. Heard about this place opening up in Torrington and was so excited that more diversity was coming into the area. I went and ordered everything on the menu ! The food was really fresh and reminded me of when I went backpacking in Southeast Asia and ordered the street food. The vibe and decor of this place is modern and peaceful for anyone looking for a place to chill out ! The desert is also from a partnership vendor (crepes&cakes) I would recommend the strawberry shortcake cheesecake, really moist & fresh. Overall I have no complaints! A very cozy and clean atmosphere. The staff was delightful and adhered to covid sanitation guidelines which is always reassuring to see. I ordered a ginger lemonade, fish bao, and the pho birria tacos. The fish bao felt like eating a fresh garden in the best way possible. I have eaten here twice, both times it took over an hour for the food to be ready. I went back a second time because the food the first time was worth it but the second was huge disappointment. The Kim chi and chicken with waffles were really good and the elote was amazing. But when we ordered again the cauliflower bites were so soggy I couldn't even eat them, they didn't come with any sauces and the fried rice had so much cilantro in it that you could barely taste anything else. Just had the best sandwich I have ever eaten. Po' Boy chicken sandwich with Siracha Aioli and slaw. All the food I have had here has been exceptional and I can't recommend it enough. Amazing food, amazing vibe, friendly staff. Will be coming back for sure. When I think of restaurants in 2021 this is what I picture in my mind. The interior was clean and comfortable with cool music playing while I waited for my food. I got the steamed pork dumplings and the chicken pad thai. Dumplings were flavorful and perfectly steamed. The pad thai had an mixture of fresh vegetables, flavorful noodles and tender chicken. I haven't had a chance to review the whole menu but from what I saw I'd say they focus on contemporary Asian inspired dishes with a twist that's all their own. Toothpick is a nice breathe of fresh air to the, at times, flat Torrington food scene. Need more like this! read more

We've now eaten twice at Toothpick. The food is simply fantastic--certainly the best I've had in Torrington. The beef brisket pho is superb, even beyond superb. I've not had better pho. And they somehow turned "tater tots" into an artful dish. The tacos were good on both occasions, but maybe don't shine the way some of the more unusual items on the menu do. The decor is not fancy--it's almost warehouse-like, but quirky, with a charming library nook that my two-year-old loves. The place is a real gem. I hope it prospers, as it deserves to do. read more

Once again I'll post my review on the place I could be seen as a bias reviewer due to my employment. Tonight I enjoyed the shrimp tacos. They are wonderful. Too, again, cilantro is your preference. Too, it isn't your traditional Mexican taco. Factually, I don't even know if Mexico produces shrimp tacos. I have eaten in Mexico. I still don't know. These are balanced, ready for your own addition of hot sauce, and the texture meaty as one would hope. Overcooked shrimp is chewy and undercooked is unwelcome. Their texture is contrasted with a creamy, crunchy slaw. Lime is included and brightens the experience. I ate this in my car, and the only improvement would have been my hot sauce of choice. Something I believe about Toothpick's food is that it is designed to compliment the diners heat preferences, or saucing. That is an indicator of inspired culinary street food. You'll know if you've traveled. And, if you haven't you may just be motivated. read more

This new addition in Torrington is absolutely fantastic. I visited for the first time on Tuesday and was immediately greeted by a cordial and knowledgeable employee. I ate the special of the week as well as the pork belly banh mi tacos. The special, po'boy chicken sandwich with slaw and sriracha aiolo was fantastic. They should put it on their regular menu. The tacos were flavorful and the pork belly was done just right; truly a fantastic dish. I also have to say that the price point for the food was spot on, if not too low. $6 each for the tacos as well as the po'boy sandwich was a bargain considering the quality and the portion size. This is the kind of place that you want to see survive - they are creative, serve quality food, and are kind and cordial. Torrington is a very challenging market and demographic for this type of food. Their location is also not ideal. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they develop a steady clientele.
