I like the food here but hate the service. First time I went here the chick working there was a total (fill in the blank). She had messed up a guy's order and he was being really nice and she didn't care that she had messed up. When she got to me she copped all kinds of attitude. The next time I went there (about a year later cause I was annoyed) the guy there was only a little better. He greeted me with a grunt, later he gruffly said "sure, I can put chili on the dog...if you pay for it" even though I had asked "How much is adding chili to the dog?" And then he forgot to include the chili with my to-go order. The food is good, so now I go to the one on Durant which is a little better in the customer service department. I'm going to write that one a review now. But I do recommend that you avoid this particular Top Dog. read more

BUT the service and their cleanliness totally makes me wanna puke all over their grill ... and wanna give this place a lower rating, but their dog is definitely yum. she was this young korean gal who apparently has a stick btwn her 2 buns. o man, i so wanted to smack her. =0 must say, the dog was sooo goood... so he orders his dog, and we wait and wait... i watch this lil girl grill the dogs, and mind you, after she gets the money (with her 2 hands) she starts touching the UNCOOKED dogs onto the grill. i was grossed out thinking, how unsanitary can you be? you touch the money and then you touch the dogs... i kindly ask her, which one is the "bla bla bla (i ferget which one we got, and i can't call him right now since he's at work) dog?" she points over to the ones that is already cooked. *sigh of relief* so we get our dog, and she asks what im getting.. "iono yet.. im going to try this one first" "hot dogs aren't supposed to be shared." Every time I wear my Top Dog shirt, people ask me if I work there--I don't know if it's my love for Top Dog that shows, or if it's everyone else's love for Top Dog that makes them want to talk about it. This location on Center Street is the one I frequent the most, when I need a pre- or post-movie snack. Top Dog serves a world of sausages, including their all-beef Top Dog hotdog, kielbasa, bratwurst, bockwurst, chicken, veggie, etc. Their buns aren't the typical squishy hotdog buns--they have a nice chew and a little bit of a crust. I cannot play favorites here, but if I had to choose, I'd have to say the kielbasa is the pick of the litter--it's got a nice snap in the skin and very bold flavor. I also like the delicate bockwurst as well. The veggie dog has a nice, spicy bite to it, so don't pass it over, either. You can add your own condiments and dressings (onions, sauerkraut, relish) to taste; you can have them put chili on your dog, but I've never tried that because it's pretty satisfying as is. (I get my chili dog fix from Pink's.) Aside from the fabulous sausages and the lovable logo, I adore Top Dog because they have RC cola on tap. That, to me, is a mark of fine taste. read more

I came in after a concert since I was having an allergic reaction, and all I wanted was water. The place just closed, but there were still customers inside, so I told the lady about my situation and she said to me "you're not having an allergic reaction" and kicked me and a friend out. i had never had a veggie dog (the wienie) at top dog until yesterday, and it's honestly not too bad. i used to always get the chicken dogs here, but my bf wanted to try the veggie dog yesterday. it's a bit more crumbly than other dogs, since it's made of soy and gluten, but the flavoring was pretty good. after you glob on the spicy russian sauce, onions, and jalapenos, anything tastes pretty good anyway! read more

Fan faves are the Hot Link, the Chicken Apple and Lemon chicken. Would be nice if they had more room to sit, but I understand they gotta keep the overhead low. The shop and the people who work here have the classic Berkeley attitude of "take it or leave it, don't BS with me". Ever since I discovered Top Dog (catered) at a bbq lunch, I was addicted. The price is wonderful ($3!!) and the dogs delicious. My favorite is the Smoked Chicken Apple. I always tell myself that I should try something else for once, but I end up getting the chicken apple anyway. A few days ago was my first time at this particular location, and I liked it! Very roomy and plenty of places to sit (compared to south side/north side top dogs) aaaand super close to the west side of campus. Also, I found out about this doggie bag deal where you can get a dog + chips + drink for only $4.75! The dogs at this location were not cooked to the point of charring a bit like the other locations I've been to, but it was still delish. Top Dog gets a lot of rave reviews from Berkeley denizens, but I would typically rather eat a grilled up Johnsonville Brat from the supermarket. And as stated by another reviewer, $3 for a hot dog seems a bit much. Maybe you're just paying for all the libertarian propoganda plastered on the walls. Went here yesterday with my three kids. There was no one in the front to take our order for at least a good three minutes. When the lady finally appeared, she proceeded to clean the sink and did not even look up for another two minutes to see I was waiting there, even though i was talking to my kids within earshot. When she finally saw me waiting, no acknowledgement of "I'll be right with you" or anything for another 30 seconds. When she took my order, she was cordial enough. HOWEVER, after she handled my cash, she used tongs to put the dogs on the grill, but used her unwashed and ungloved hands to put the buns on the grill. EWW! I normally would have said something, but at that point I just wanted to feed my famished kids. Also, as I said earlier, she was nice enough. I just wished she washed her hands after dealing with money. She did the same things to the customers after us. The hot dogs were average. The grilled bun was good- germs and all. I was on my was to an athletic event at UC Berkeley and desperately needed to get a quick something to eat on my way there. As I was walking along the street, most of the places were sit down cafes/restaurants, but then I found Top Dog. If you like hot dogs/sausages, this is the place for you! They have a variety options, all of which are only a few dollars, and the service is extremely quick. The only downside is that there isn't much seating, so plan to stand or take it to go.
