This spot lives up to and beyond the hype. It is the true definition of a great hole in the wall and a true hidden gem. While in town on business of course I used my trusted Yelp app to see where the locals dined at. They got this one right. Top Hog is top dog. I've heard of Top Hog from several locals but just never find myself out in Gallatin that often. I live in Hendersonville and it's too far out of the way. But today, after spending my morning watching barbecue competitons on TV, I had a craving for some barbecue (specifically ribs). I was out in the Gallatin area unexpectedly and decided to look up barbecue joints on Yelp. Top Hog was relatively close and I started reading the reviews. Good thing I did because another Yelper stated it was cash only. I never ever carry cash so I had to stop at an ATM beforehand. I went for lunch to a packed restaurant. Workers were running around like crazy. The only available seat was at the bar. I would like to say the staff (especially the women) were very nice and polite. I watched their interactions with various customers and it was something you don't see everyday. Think textbook good 'ole country hospitality. The menu is one page long and I wish there were more barbecue options (for future visits). For now it's only ribs, chicken, and pulled pork. There are other options like burgers, chicken tenders, and catfish. The platters are really cheap (comparatively speaking to other barbecue joints). It's about half the price that I've seen, which makes it a steal. Since I was craving ribs, I ordered half a rack of babies, with deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese (recommended by my server), and Texas toast along with a Diet Coke in a humongous Mason jar for about $15 and some change (cheap cheap)! The Mac and cheese was good. It had a nice creamy, buttery flavor (which I like) but I wish it had some sharpness (aka sharp cheddar). Nevertheless, I downed it like a little kid. The deviled eggs were awesome. You get about 4 of them and they were as good as any I've had (especially homemade). It's tangy/creamy with the right amount of zing. Plus it's a bargain because everytime I get deviled eggs anywhere in Nashville, I have to pay about 8$ for the same amount. For the record, sides cost $1.95 here. As for the ribs, the flavor was good. Nice tender ribs with a good balance of smoke. However they are served wet. I prefer my ribs served dry so I can dip them in sauce. I didn't ask if dry was an option. Irregardless, I enjoyed them as any guy would and savored the flavors. Their sauces come in mild and hot varieties but otherwise taste identical. It's vinegar-based and a little runny/watery. I enjoyed my first visit to Top Hog and it definitely won't be my last. It's hard to find good barbecue in Sumner County so as of now, this one is the place to go in my book. read more

We visit this place from time to time and the food we order is always consistent. I usually order the catfish and it's always fresh and flavorful. Probably one of the best places for catfish, surprisingly enough is a bbq joint. My girls order the bbq baked potato when their with me and they seem to like it. My things is the bbq in my opinion isn't really a true smoked bbq flavor. It kind of reminds of the chain place down the street if you know who I mean. They have a good selection of sides and their desserts are great to help with that sweet tooth craving. Gave them the benefit of the doubt that food quality could have been deteriorated in transport for the event. Finally went in to have fresh bbq and we left full but seriously not impressed. The bbq chicken was heavily sauced and if you ate the skin you got some smoke but once that was removed you were left with dry, flavorless chicken. The BBQ pork was smokeless and flavorless. The white beans needed salted but did have a decent flavor. BBQ sauces were meh. Two redeeming factors were the large drinks and the ranch dressing that helped the chicken taste better. Really REALLY want to give this place 5 stars. The food is great and cheap. But when I get home I realize the lady didn't give me my fish platter I ordered. I go all the way back up there and am told I'm a liar and I didn't order it. Then when I said it's the first thing I ordered she argued that a cheeseburger was the first thing being rude as hell as she dug through her tickets she took. Well she found it, and saw I MOST DEFINITELY DID order the catfish. Then she challenged me and said it was in the box when she checked it. Again, calling me a liar. So, this place does nothing homemade or fresh. Everything is from a bag or container. I have done many of barbecue competitions and I can promise that the barbecue is dry and you have to use barbecue sauce to flavor it. The ribs are horrible. They over cook them. If ribs fall off the bone then they are over cooked or boiled at the beginning. The sides are pretty much out of a bag if fried and a container if coleslaw or potato salad and such. (assuming you are the passenger, of course!) Found this place on my way to taking my puppy to the spay clinic down the street and SO happy I did! We went on a Friday night and it was packed but we were able to get in and the wait wasn't terrible. 20-30 minutes or so for a party of 2 and they went in the order of when we came in, not in order of party size. The atmosphere feels so much like home. It smells like a fireplace and BBQ and is so warm and comfy feeling. The service is good. These ladies do pretty amazing jobs despite being so busy. Our server was awesome and even came packing jokes and personality! And now the food..... O. M. G. We had the full rack of baby back ribs, the BBQ plate, and the catfish plate. Got the Mac n cheese, the beans, the coleslaw, and the onion rings. The hoecakes are missing the sugar and the Mac n cheese and pulled pork was a miss. Everything else knocked our socks off though. The ribs were sensational, the coleslaw (creamy) is so great, the onion rings aren't over seasoned which is such a welcome thing in a land where everything is heavy on the salt. The catfish was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the beans... I'd go back for the beans alone. We will 100% be back and I want to try the country fries. The French fries looked like they were crinkle cut fries but we didn't try them. The sweet tea was excellent and the drinks are served in big mason jars. Also, their BBQ sauces are amazinggggg. Went to Top Hog for the first time last night. It was like going back in time. Future guest should know that it's cash or check only. Food was good. Service was great and they were all working their tails off. My only problem was as we were leaving, a lady was bringing some meat into the building and she was smoking a cigarette while heading inside. Disposed of it before she went in.
