Went to Top Hog for the first time last night. It was like going back in time. Future guest should know that it's cash or check only. Food was good. Service was great and they were all working their tails off. My only problem was as we were leaving, a lady was bringing some meat into the building and she was smoking a cigarette while heading inside. Disposed of it before she went in. This place was tucked in the outskirts of Gallatin kind of of the beaten path. There was a wait when we went on a Saturday night. I mean, I just don't think you could find a more authentic place than this restaurant in terms of BBQ in the south. You hear music from bikes arriving as you sip your fruit tea from a mason's jar. Their menu is simple and it is straight to the point. It is also very cheap. So what more could you ask for? I had their BBQ pork sandwich with mac n cheese. It was amazing! I finished it all. Love this place! Top Hog is exactly the kind of restaurant that I want to frequent to see what a place is like, and to get a sense of the locale. As the city creeps farther into the country, ringing Gallatin with chain restaurants that could be anywhere, Top Hog keeps the country in the cooking. The barbecue plate comes with more meat than many diners can polish off in one sitting, but like me, they'll try because it tastes delicious. Barbecue sauces are offered but not needed, as the pulled pork already is full of flavor. Top Hog's spicy turnip greens are a thing to weep over, as are the hoe cakes. Take a bite of pork, Cole slaw, and hoe cake and taste a bit of heaven right here on earth. To wet your whistle, there's sweet tea, fruit tea, and unsweetened tea which is probably anathema to some but which I found delicious as I worked my way through this unctuous meal. My only quibble is the sad little tub of margarine spread on the plate. Food this good deserves real butter, and I'd gladly pay an up charge for the real thing. I didn't even open that margarine tub--get thee behind me, Satan! After a filling meal at Top Hog, I definitely felt like I wanted to stand in the pond awhile, and I'm sure you will too! read more

Sometimes hole-in-the-wall restaurants are the best in town! This place is situated in the middle of the projects in Gallatin and has some of the best BBQ around. I always get the pulled pork plate with hoecakes (teehee!), onion rings and mac & cheese-it never disappoints!! They also have fantastic sweet tea that is served in an oversized mason jar. The service is always on point and includes lots of "honey's" and "darlin's." Those ladies run around like crazy and work their butts off. As a result, the food comes out super quick. What a hidden little gem this place is, y'all!! As soon as you walk in, there is a homey and winter like feel. The servers greeted us right away as the carried trays of food to waiting customers. It was crowded but we were sat right away in the side dining room. Our server took our drink order immediately and others came to check to see if it was taken. When drinks were brought out, (the sweet tea is good) we ordered right away. Me and the hubs ordered cat fish plates with fires and spicy greens. Omg! True southern fried catfish. It was delicious. I got it plain so I can't comment on their lettuce/tomato game. The pork bbq sammich was soggy on the bottom. Moist is good, but this was just plain wet. The meat itself was bland but not bad. The bbq sauce is pretty good but not great. The Mac & Cheese tasted ok but the noodles were way overcooked. It'd be much better if it were baked and had a little crustiness to it. I just went straight for the BBQ Plate with coleslaw and turnip greens. Also came with hoe cakes. Ive actually never had turnip greens or hoe cakes. And now I am scared to death I'm not going to find this in Vegas! So the BBQ has no gristle (all BBQ I've ever had contained gristle which tells me I need to move to TN) and the coleslaw was just plain yummy. Chopped up and juicy. The turnip greens were salty but for some reason didn't seem too much so. The hoe cakes: ok now I need these 'dinner pancakes' for dinner tomorrow. I mean every dinner. For life. We absolutely loved the character and the ambiance of Top Hog and the food. We came with friends who live nearby and weren't disappointed. I ordered a baked potato with the bbq pulled pork. The bbq had a nice flavor and the meat was saucy. The potato was a nice size, hot, and had a fluffy interior. I was excited to see a side item as deviled eggs; I thought this was unusual. I love deviled eggs so I ordered them. They had too many pickles for my taste so I was disappointed but my husband enjoyed them. We ordered the fruit tea on the recommendation of our friend. We weren't disappointed...so good. We now want to try and duplicate this flavor at home. My husband ordered the bbq pulled pork, the turnip greens, and coleslaw. He enjoyed everything he ordered.
