I first heard about this place while overhearing a conversation that my grandfather was having with my mom. I didn't think much about it as I was convinced that famous Dave's was the best barbecue at that time, needless to say I was a teenager and didn't have a clue what good BBQ really was. Fast forward 10 years...my husband and I moved closer to Gallatin we happened to just drive past it one day...we ended up turning around and going in. That place is almost always packed, they do not accept debit cards, and never ever answer the phone but it's not because of poor customer service it's because they are always that busy. The food is by far the best I've ever had, and worth the frustrating crowd and Limited parking. This will forever be my number one place to go! read more

This place was tucked in the outskirts of Gallatin kind of of the beaten path. There was a wait when we went on a Saturday night. Best barbecue I've had. Place was packed with locals. Very reasonable and terrific service. Turnip greens and deviled eggs on the side were a great call...comes with hoecakes which I couldn't even finish..other guys in our party got burgers and fried catfish...not disappointed!!! They are always packed, which means its good but also means the wait is always extremely long. The only reason that I am giving four out of five stars is because they only take cash. This is a new favorite for Nashville! The environment was so cozy. There was no wait at 1pm on a Saturday. Inside was pretty crowded but the outside porch was nice and open! The food was amazing. Everything was at least a bit spicy but we loved it. The BBQ was tender, smoky, and the portions were big! I got the turnip greens which were the best I've ever had, and the Mac and cheese which was basic but delicious in my opinion. Drinks are served in huge mason jars which is great. Prices were fantastic, less than 10.00 for a platter and a soda. The food came out quickly and the service was fantastic. It is cash only. Will go back on our next trip down! read more

The ambience is perfect, the prices are inexpensive, the service is friendly, and the food ... holy moly the food. Rich, savory, and absolutely tender. Wife and I ate the bbq sandwich on Thursday. We have been throwing up since then. The bbq is old and reheated so don't think fresh!!! The max and cheese was out of a Kraft box and the potatoes were just greasy potatoes. Don't trust the reviews on this place it is terrible. read more

Food is really good. I'm sure that's what keeps them in business because the service and functionality of the restaurant is terrible. Reminds me of going to that aunts house, that you hated as a kid, for dinner. The server's reminds me of the old aunt who doesn't keep a clean house and is somewhat brash and lacking in customer service skills. They have no organized system of taking customers names and accurately getting them on a list. No text or remote transmitter to summon you when the table is finally ready. No central point to greet guests as you have to hunt down the waitress who is carrying the clipboard. No signage to tell amy new customer this procedure either. I watched two other parties our size that arrived after is be called to table before us. No way they are accurately maintaining the list. Ohh yeah and there is room for six customers to sit in cramped quarters inside the waiting area, which is nothing more than along the wall next to tables. I so enjoy sitting at a table with a group less than three feet from me waiting. The restaurant is not very clean either. It's old and shows it's age. The hamburger steak is very good. Everything we had was good but I can't justify the extremely long unorganized terrible waiting conditions. Too many other places nearby to go eat. Probably my last time to eat at Top Hog because I don't think management cares or will spend a dime to cleanup and modernize it. read more

Second time was a charm. This place is a real mom and pop, down home good cooking restaurant. Be prepared to have a small wait as it's cozy and has round kitchen tables. The fish was perfectly fried and seasoned. I had white beans and coleslaw which were equally good. Wife had the BBQ plate with baked beans and home potatoes. Delicious! Son had one of the best cheeseburger and fries money could buy. The sweet tea was awesome to wash it all down with. Took a slice of fudge pie home. Really wished I'd taken two... I have tried almost every place in Nashville to find good barbecue and always disappointed. Asked my cardiologist and he said "TopHog"in Gallatin , you can't go wrong. He doesn't live there now, but was born and raised there. I was very very happy to find a place that was deeelicious. The barbecue was fantastic. Now whenever I want good barbecue I go to TopHog. I have tried pulled pork, ribs , chicken, catfish, and the burgers and it's all good. The side dishes are like home cooked. My wife always tells me to get extra cornbread If I order a plate. The staff is super friendly. They even gave me an extra side and desert free when I said I drive from Nashville to Gallatin to get good barbecue. I'm retired and it's a nice short little drive i make at least twice a month. Now I don't have to wait for my nephew to bring me barbecue from Memphis whenever he comes up here to visit family and friends. I might add that I have been to some of the recommended places more that once, in Nashville, Mt.Juliet, and Franklin. And every time I was very disappointed. Just ok, we had the bbq and it was average at best. The mac and cheese is sub par .On top of all this it took a long time to be seated and even longer to get our food. A few warnings; there is no alcohol, so if you're dreaming of a beer with your pork sandwich, you're out of luck. Also, they do not accept credit cards. Remarkably, if you don't have cash on you, they'll give you an IOU. This is that kind of place-they won't take your plastic but they'll let you return tomorrow and pay. This is one of those awesome little secrets in Gallatin. When you pull up to the location it is in the middle of the projects. It leaves you with the feeling you may get mugged or car jacked walking thru the parking lot. Trust me....you won't. The people that live out here are very friendly. Top Hog is a nice little BBQ and Burger joint. You walk into a rustic style restaurant with wood floors and walls. There is a small bar top but its usually only used for spill over sitting. If you don't get there when they open be prepared to wait. Even if you do get there when they open, be prepared to wait. I have only tried the burgers....they are that good. There is no need for me to try anything else. Get it on Texas Toast (yummy). As I mentioned before you have to get there early or be prepared to wait. As busy as they are the wait staff has always been friendly and courteous. They don't rush you out the door when you are done. Highly recommend eating here. read more

First of all if you carry have it on you. No parking and no handicap parking. Got there and was crowded and could not get on a waiting list. I tried to ask the waitress`s and just got ignored. They are sweet when you suddenly find out they take no credit cards and trust you to come back with cash. This is weird. Sorry. Who doesn't take a card? But the dining experience is odd where it's a big room of tables. People's chairs hit another from other tables. Food is okay. I really really think it is rated high is because the prices are CHEAP. This place hits the nail on the head from every direction. Perfect location allows for appropriate parking, great outdoor seating, and a great indoor atmosphere. The wait staff is top notch and one of the friendliest I've encountered. I always get the catfish plate and it's always cooked to perfection along with the sides that are always good. Subpar all around except for the exceptionally kind and attractive wait staff - and it was relatively cheap. Onion rings tasted like the fry oil was old. Ribs fell of the bone but were very wet, too much BBQ sauce, and they had an off flavor of missing spices or subpar meat. Catfish wasn't impressive. Good batter, but just middle of the road. If you're looking for some good tasty barbecue....this place isn't it. Ribs seem to be cooked in a pan and heavy smothered in a bbq type sauce. Pulled pork was just blah and comparable to Whitt's bbq. They do however have really good catfish and burgers. Pretty generous portion of fish and sides. Mac n cheese is tasty and creamy. I don't believe I've ever had a bad side dish from here. I would tell you about dessert but I'm always so full from dinner. Be prepared to wait on any day and at anytime you come here. There is always a line and as other reviews stated they only take cash or check. Staff is friendly and helpful.
