Wow, times are a changing.. I hate to bring up pre and post COVID but... dining out post has been a unique experience. While I gave 5 stars to Topaz nine years ago, that feels like an experience from yesteryear. Rochelle and I chose Topaz because we have been a fan and we're going to see Harry Connick at nearby Carnegie Hall five minutes walking. Topaz is small and festively decorated, I might say Avenue A style, thus you always feel as if you are celebrating something. We were hungry and decided to order two appetizers, unsweetened Thai iced tea ( big mistake), Massaman curry and Pad se ew with chicken and dessert. First, the beverage.. we just wanted a lightly sweet version and waitress recommended just the tea and a shot glass of half and half. Well, let's just say this is Lipton tea USA version not Thailand. Yikes! We loved the curry puffs from past dining experiences. Well, we got the shrinky dink version which cost more, $12, for little triangles not " empanada size. Tasteless with minimal sauce. On to the next, pork dumplings, pint size "kreplach" with no taste. The entrees arrived and at least they were better than the appetizers. Rochelle liked her Massaman curry with avocados, potatoes in a rich broth served with a side of sticky rice which she barely touched to soak up curry. ( "My A1-C" yeah yeah yeah whatever, lol) The Pad See ew was decent and a generous portion but needed more spice. We decided to try the Coconut Ice Cream with sticky rice and fruit. Not bad...if you like overly sweet. The bathroom is located near the kitchen and a bumpy walk to get there. We had to ask for the check, paid and I took one last look.. Adorable Thai Restaurant in Midtown on 56th Street. Solid food. I had the Red Curry Chicken which was full of nice cuts of white meat and a sauce with a healthy kick. My wife had Drunken Noodles with Shrimp that she devoured. Also said it was just the right level of spicy. Atmosphere is warm with beautiful wood Trim throughout. Friendly service rounds it out for a dining experience. Perfect location if you're attending a performance at Carnegie Hall. Also close to Broadway theaters and a short walk to Central Park. Definitely recommend giving them a try. read more

Topaz Thai was an unexpected stop while I was in NYC. It was very close to the hotel my husband and I stayed in, so we stopped in for dinner on a whim. We sat in the front window which was fun to have a little secluded area to ourselves and be able to people watch. The wait staff were all very friendly and attentive. We got our food quickly and they kept our waters refilled. I was happy with the meals we got. I thought they were both good, but not "blow your mind" good. Tried this on a whim while visiting NYC. It's a small location but the ambience is delightful. Their AC struggled to keep up with the heatwave but I don't blame them for it. The service was fast with the dishes coming out very quickly. The food was spiced for flavor and not heat. The duck was prepared extremely well and was the highlight of the meal. This place was recommended to me by a friend and I am glad she did because I'm this area frequently and never even realized this place existed! We came here pre show at radio city and were seated quickly. We weee presented with the menu and the specials, I ended up getting the yellow curry, and we split an order of the spring rolls. I had the Thai iced tea. Can't go wrong with it! The spring rolls were crispy, hot and fresh. The yellow curry was amazing it was some of the best I've had in a long time. A must try if it's available! The restaurant was busy but relatively quiet. Service was great, fast, and super friendly. The prices were good too. Perfect- since we were turned away from another restaurant around the corner with many empty tables but were told it was fully booked. Service was welcoming & quick. The restaurant's decor is vibrant and fun, and I loved that they were playing Thai music--it really added to the atmosphere. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly. The moment I finished my cup of water, someone came by to refill it right away. When I accidentally dropped my napkin, they brought me a new one almost instantly. They started off with some complimentary shrimp chips, which were simple but a nice touch. I ordered the Swimming Duck, and it was absolutely outstanding. The meat was incredibly tender and sliced just right--not too thick, not too thin. Topaz has been here since the 1990's. This was my first time back in many years. The location is perfect if you're attending a show at City Center or Carnegie Hall. We had a reservation and our table was available when we arrived, even though the place looked full. The service was friendly and efficient. Multiple servers checked on us and they seemed to be working well as a team. The decor was cute - they've hung a combination of Christmas and Valentine's decorations. came on a Sunday evening for a spontaneous dinner with a friend - it was quite busy so I was expecting something very delicious! I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and it came our spicy which loved. The portion was quite small so I ended up eating more when I got home, but the flavor of the drunken noodles nailed the spice and had a lot if veggies and chili sauce. After roaming around the streets of New York on a cold winter day, enjoying the lights and holiday vibe we wanted some soul food. Came across Topaz, good reviews online so we (party of 7) got a table. Called them 15 mins earlier which helped to get a spot in a rather small and crowded place. The restaurant was all decked up with Christmas decorations. The service was friendly, quick but felt they were bit overwhelmed with the holiday crowd. Coming to the food - glad we checked out this place irrespective of a name which didn't sound 'Thai'. Awesome food. We had the red curry (chicken and veg), drunken noodles, dancing chicken, pad ka prow. Food was full of flavors. Either we were super hungry or the food was right portioned. Didn't have any left overs. As for the spice level, they didn't ask but bit spicy. Of course we didn't mind on a cold night. If I am in the neighborhood will definitely go again. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for literally over 30 years. The portions recently have become a lot smaller, they don't offer chips and peanut sauce at lunch anymore, and most shockingly, I just paid nine dollars for a cup of tea here. OnG! I ate it TF i was torn between Swimming Duck meal and Red Curry with sooo many questions. The waiter was kind to answer all of them (like they even have mock duck wtf is that?!?! I asked its tofu too ) I was made a silly remark wishing i could get both and he recommended the ROYAL DUCK! It wa a literally everything i wanted. It was a very small portion than what was on the photo but it was still delicious. It had some small pieces of the roasted (real) duck, with red curry sauce, some pineapples and spicy peppers cut inside but the sauce was not too spicy it was perfect (i thought it wasn't spicy at all til i bit into what i thought was green peppers. Def scotch bonnet level! And i got a side order of sticky rice on the side. Now that i think of it. They didn't give the noodles like it was suppose to come with either (i just realized that now my 5 star rating just went to a 4 cuz i feel a bit gypped). In all fairness i did have a lot of questions and bc of my peanut allergy and OUR shellfish allergy he probably was nervous to kill us lmao. We ordered spring rolls for the table and my date ordered the drunken noodles. They taste delicious but I always get that or Pad see ew. One of the only Thai places near my job that is within a 10 minute walk - while it doesn't have a lunch special, the average price for a noodle or rice dish is about $18-20. I ordered for pickup and it was ready pretty quickly, and I peeked inside and there was a bag of shrimp chips! I love shrimp chips but was surprised. I'm pretty sure they were home made. The pad se ew with tofu I ordered was pretty delicious however the tofu was burned, more than one piece. I'm sure it was just a fluke - I'd be willing to try them again! read more

This was my second time dinning at Topaz Thai Authentic restaurant in the heart of NYC. I'd dinned both on a Sunday and Friday evening and have to say this place is always filled and busy, but yet enjoyable. My friend and I are both fans of Pad Kra Prow. It's served with all type of meat sautéed with onions, peppers, carrots and the best Thai sauce/gravy in the entire world. We usually ordered our Pad Kra Prow with chicken. They also served either with brown or white rice. Honestly I so loved how amazingly tendered the chicken was cooked and mixed with the basil sauce. It was so totally delicious and although I was filled I'd greedily wanted more. Haha! I usually ordered my meal with a traditional Thai beer served in a very iced cold plastic mug. It's a bit salty, but you can't really taste the saltiness when combined with a spicy meal. The staff were so sweet and patience. They did not rush us as we took our time to scrolled through the menu. The services and atmosphere here was great! One of the staff was telling me just about everyone who works there are from Thailand. Haha! I think that's pretty cool and so authentic. I would definitely visit again in the future. The food and service at Topaz was good. The staff is attentive, kind and continuously checked in to make sure that we were comfortable and to check-in which I appreciated. Good service and hospitality goes a long way so I was very impressed. The decor is nice as well, it sort of felt like a Thai restaurant in a speakeasy to be honest! I'm curious to know which business was in the space prior to the restaurant. My friend and I ordered the spring rolls, Thai dumplings, royal duck and swimming duck. Both of the duck dishes were a bit sweet but very tasty. The dumplings were probably the best Thai dumplings I've tried in the city thus far.
