Have been to Topaz multiple times over a course of decade and it never disappoints. Ambiance has now turned little dated, it has always been a small restaurant with a cozy feeling so yes it can get crowded easily. Food is always top notch, fresh and delicious. No matter what you try it's always great. Service is prompt and attentive. This time around realized some of drink's prices are super inflated. Singha beer doesn't have price on menu but was charged $11. Also for 3 people dinner, automatic gratuity was added. This is more recent experience. For this reason 1 star taken off. read more

Really great Rama Chicken. Atmosphere now in January was still Christmas and really cute. Online it says they have a lunch menu but they don't, which is a shame. Most Thai places do for cheaper options. read more

When you get there, you need to walk down stairs, slightly below street level; note the bottom last step is really short. You get deep fried rice chips as a complimentary snack, its served with a small dish of peanut sauce. They have a full bar so these chips would go great with beer. We started with the Chive Lover... yes it has a glorious chive flavor. I think its chive mochi that has been fried. 1 order is 4 cubes... crispy crust and soft center. Thumbs up for this appetizer. The Beef Pad Thai was pretty good... beef was tender and the dish had a rich tamarind flavor. Sweet with just a bit of tartness. The noodles were soft and had good bit of bite. The Royal Duck, I think was winning entrée. The duck was roasted and crispy. Most of it was boneless. The sauce is on the sweet side, but the good news is that it was not swimming in sauce. The thin egg noodles under the duck was cooked perfectly, I think it was better than the Pad Thai. The greens under the noodles were tender. Overall this dish was awesome and it deserves 5 stars all by itself. The Massaman Curry with chicken was OK. The chicken was strips of white meat. The curry is suppose to contain peanuts, but I did not see any peanuts there. Please note that the chunks of potato were on the hard side. The sauce was a bit on the watery side, but very flavorful. There is only 1 unisex bathroom available to customers. Unfortunately, I was unable to take a look at it. The only thing that kept me from giving Topaz 5 stars was the service. They were attentive, but it seems like they were rushing to get out fast. There were open tables so I do not think was because of occupancy. Another thing was after I paid, the wait staff took the bill folio before I had a chance to pull out the bill and then he threw the bill away. This was part of why it felt so rushed. read more

Came here on a Saturday for lunch , as closest restaurant to our timeshare -I don't consider Sweetgreen in rainy weather. Complimentary Thai rice crisp chips came with dipping peanut sauce The $9.95 tom yum shrimp soup came with a dozen mushrooms, herbs, lemongrass chili, green onions and two shrimp. A bit on the salty side, and could have used more vegetables, as the soup was on the thin side. The $16.95 pad thai was excellent, with stir fried rice noodles, egg, crushed peanut, scallions, along with a generous amount of sliced chicken cooked in the sweet tamarind sauce. The $16.95 drunken noodle was superb, with stir fried broad noodle, spicy basil, onion, egg, carrot and Chinese broccoli. Wife gave me all of her jalapenos, as too spicy for her, but just right for me. Decent amount of chicken. Great lunch experience, although you can get the noodle dishes with chicken for $15.95 for the weekday lunch specials, albeit a smaller portion. Employee had to periodically sweep the front grating at the entrance to allow water to drain, as restaurant located at basement level below street level. Walked back here on Sunday 830pm and the place next door, Kin Ramen was packed with people waiting out the door. Same owners as Topaz wised up on what is the hot thing. Would not want to repeat getting soaked walking the 3 minutes from our timeshare 2 blocks down the street in a rainstorm, which would last 42 straight hours from Friday 2pm through Sunday 8am. read more

We arrived on a Saturday evening and were promptly seated in this cozy restaurant. They brought complimentary rice chips with some yummy sauce. We ordered spring rolls ($8.95) which were 5 tiny rolls served with sweet sauce, crispy and tasty. My entree of Pra Ram Rong Song ($18.95) had peanut sauce which was slightly sweet with broccoli and chicken. The included rice was a nice compliment. My hubby ordered Lovely in the Golden Nest ($22.95) chicken, cashews, pineapple and the dish was medium spicy. He enjoyed it. My Chardonnay ($17) was nice and not citrusy. I expected more given the great reviews from friends but I was left feeling unsatisfied and a bit grossed out. I love Thai food, it's my favorite cuisine. I love curry, noodles, spices and flavor. I ordered the fancy noodles and was really let down by how little noodles there were. The curry in the dish was so shallow and I swear there were only 2 forkfuls of noodles. The dish tasted a little funky and the curry was a bit separated and chunky. I didn't think that was a great combination. I left still hungry and a bit unsettled by the texture and sour flavor. Seriously, this place never gets old. Always perfect. Going all the way back to the days when JFK Jr. used to grab lunch here at his regular table, and when I used to work just a few blocks away. Everything's good, but the Swimming Duck is exceptional. Just the right amount of heat to keep you shoveling more into your mouth to satisfy a craving you never even knew you had. Crispy skin. This place ask you what type of tofu you want either fried or soft. Other places do not ask you that so I'd like that. We were in and out by half an hour or so. We wandered towards this area and to be quite honest, we were headed for Kin Ramen. When we saw Topaz, we quickly scanned the menu and decided to give this place a try. The inside is warm and cozy, for some reason it gave us cruise ship vibes. We were indulged with crispy chips for appetizer after we made our selections and ordered drinks. The tom yum sup was tasty, although I think it's a little pricey for a small serving. The mango salad came as chucks versus what I'm used to other Thai places (julienne cuts). The curry puff was delicious. The serving portions are generous for the noodle dishes. The Pad Thai was flavorful and Drunken Noodle had the perfect amount of heat. We stumbled upon Topaz while we were looking for a dinner option before seeing a show at Carnegie Hall. We were pulled in by the look of the menu on the side of the restaurant and the sign that it was having its 30th anniversary. Clearly you're doing something right if you've been around that long! There were four of us and they were able to seat us right away. It's a small place but they have a surprising amount of tables. It wasn't too crowded, but I can imagine when they're packed it can feel a little cramped. They give you crisps with peanut sauce that are flavored with shrimp so be aware of that. My friends ordered the Bangkok dumplings and the Little Mermaid and they said they tasted really fresh and bright. I got the chive lover which was fantastic. Other Thai restaurants make them so large and bready that these bites were just delectable and balanced. I got pad see ew which was great, although I wanted more veggies in it. My partner got green curry and said it was really flavorful with a good spice level but a bit more watery to his taste. Our friends got pineapple fried rice and chicken pad Thai and said they both really enjoyed the flavors. The service was attentive and friendly, although they use tablets for orders which slows down the process a bit, and we had to all repeat our orders for the server. My family and I came to Topaz Thai Authentic since we were staying at a hotel nearby. The restaurant was tucked away in a basement. For food, we ordered a Thai iced tea, massamun curry, drunken noodles, pad ka prow shrimp, and pineapple fried rice. The portions are decently big but seemed less than other Thai spots usually provide. Also, if you like spicy food I would definitely recommend ordering it more spicy. We asked for our food a bit spicy since asking for spicy can sometimes be REALLY spicy at Thai spots but this is not one of those spots so ask for the level of spice you want. The food wasn't bad but there are definitely better spots in the city. The food came pretty quickly and the waiters were nice. read more

My masaman curry was simply amazing, Spicy enough but since I like it spicier, I ask for spice on the side, it was so worth it, wow. Let me start by stating this is not my preferred Thai restaurant in New York City. I prefer Wondee Siam on 9th Avenue. Here's why: First, Topaz is not exactly authentic. They come close on certain dishes but as someone who traveled to Thailand extensively, I feel they Americanize the food. In other words, "It'll do in a rush." Here's what annoyed me today. I ordered 4 dishes for 4 different people, including a salad. The total was $98. When I picked up the food, there was ONE tiny bag of shrimp chips inside. This surprised me so I asked the hostess if I could have one bag per person and she nastily spat at me that the shrimp chips are complimentary so they only give one per bag. I should have asked her for a separate bag for each order at that point but I didn't. Another time they talked to me as if I didn't know what I was talking about. I have been eating Pad Kra Pao for over 30 years, first eating it in Thailand, yet, when I ordered it here, it is not minced chicken. When I asked them about that, they told me that if I want it minced that is a more expensive dish called Dancing Chicken. In all, the food isn't bad, they just don't live up to their name and are stingy with the chips. read more

Came here on a Sunday for lunch, this was my second visit to this establishment. The first was during a great fall day (they have limited outdoor seating), today we opted to dine indoors. We started with the Singha Thai beer and the complimentary Thai rice crisp chips came with dipping peanut sauce. This gave us time to read the menu, the staff wasn't pushy to turn tables, more welcoming to assistive. We ordered the Chicken Wraps (Larb Gai) lettuce wrapped ground chicken salad in spicy lime dressing. Though the most expensive on the salad menu it was well worth it to split and savor. It says spicy and delivered on this promise. Next for the main two courses, we had the Beef Drunken Noodle which in a word PERFECTION. Again the stir fried broad noodles were well cooked, along with the spicy basil, onion,carrot and broccoli. My wife picked out jalapenos, so it was a bonus for me not to have to hunt for the additional heat I was seeking to justify having a second beer. The second main course was the Pumpkin Curry prawn in red curry sauce with generous rounded chunks of pumpkin and prawns on this dish. The peppers, zucchini and basil leaves rounded out the order. NOTE: order a side of rice to pull in a red curry sauce along with the vegetables. Spoke with the manager who was wonderful and yet undersold the pumpkin curry, but was very happy that we enjoyed it all. Overall a 5 of 5 stars, leisurely pace, warm atmosphere, and really savory meal. Coupled with a leisurely Sunday pace made for a great time at Topaz. read more
