I took my family to Tortello since we had heard only good things about it. When we arrived we were told that it would be a 45 minute wait. We happily agreed to wait. They told us they would text/call when we would could be seated and were given no indication that it would an issue to accommodate us. We wait 45 minutes and hear nothing from Tortello. Sometimes it takes a bit longer, so we wait another 15 minutes. Still we hear nothing from Tortello. After waiting over an hour I go in just to check how much longer our wait might be. I figured that we had just been given an optimistic timeline, which I can understand, but instead, I was casually told that "it's not going to work" and then got turned away. I was shocked. They had us waiting over an hour and they didn't communicate with us once that they wouldn't be able to seat us. Luckily I went to check because we would have likely waited another hour! I get it, it is a very casual restaurant, but why did I had to leave my jacket on? I even overheard one of the waiters saying that it is cold. What a great family style meal for my holiday party! We were treated to 4 different homemade pastas, so much good wine, tasty espresso martinis, some excellent breads and salads, and two desserts. I don't know... I had a good experience here at first but we've been 4-5 times now because we live in the neighborhood and I just have been disappointed in my dishes the last few times. Not bad by any means but just nothing I would return for. I love the ambiance, the fact the owner is inside taking orders and interacting is great, and the focaccia with ricotta is every time BUT again last night just found our pasta to be meh. I got the baked duck paperdelle. It was good but nothing to write home about. My husband thought the noodle texture was a bit mealy. He got the special which was a Gorgonzola and olive pasta. Basically just tasted like a watered down creamy pasta with a few olives, no real flavor. I was pretty sure I got food poisoning from the saffron dish which is why I gave the review 2 stars. But now I believe it's from a different dish from somewhere else. I also didn't love the taste of the pasta dish. I would try a different pasta but would NOT recommend the saffron dish unless u love the taste of saffron. I got a note from the restaurant owner privately that also told me about their temperature controls and that they didn't hear of any other complaints which made me reevaluate my food from that day. I love Tortello! Their pasta is seriously the best and I love the ambiance of the space. It's cozy and quaint, and very warm and inviting. I've pretty much tried all their pastas and you just can't go wrong with any of them. My favorite is the aglio olio. Simple but so flavorful and the pasta is so perfectly al dente. Oh and don't forget to get the focaccia with ricotta and honey! It's absolutely divine! I think the only problem I have with Tortello is I wish they had more protein in their dishes. Most have no protein at all. Meatballs would be a great addition to their menu in my opinion. Other than that, I love this place! read more

TLDR: the homemade pastas were great but the sauce could've been better. What's the best way to judge a pasteria's pasta sauce? You get their pomodoro! We ordered the pomodoro, pesto, and beef ragu. The pomodoro was sweetened, which was unexpected for an Italian joint. The beef ragu was tasty but not amazing; the pasta was perfectly al dente. The pesto was probably the best sauce we had, but the Cavatelli was quite a bit more "al dente" compared to the other pastas. The burrata was tasty--but burrata is always tasty. Fantastic spot for dinner with friends! Focused, excellent menu of mostly salads and pastas, all of which were delicious. The octopus salad was cooked perfectly as was all of the pasta. Great textures and flavors. The tiramisu, salame di cicolatta and deeply rich Italian hot chocolate were strong as well. I appreciated that the portions were more-Italy size than American size in return for the quality of ingredients and execution, but it is not an inexpensive dinner per se. I had chiusoni alla gallurese. Pasta in a saffron, onion and sausage cream sauce. Sounds good, but I learned I'm not a big fan of saffron. Kind of a mustiness to it. Also, very little sausage in there. Donna was much happier with her basciate all puttanesca with capers and green olives. Moderately spicy red sauce and the green olives were a variety I've not had before, lively, but not too much. Then we capped it off with an excellent tiramisu. The food is still fantastic, obviously. The problem is that they're really super unclear with what their hours actually are. I drove from Ravenswood, which was a 20 minute drive on Sunday morning and would've been longer on another day or another time of day to pick up some of their Pesto that they had advertised on their Instagram. When I arrived at 10:40, the door was locked. Another woman came just behind me and also tried to open the door and looked in the window and saw the same thing I did on the door, which was that the place opens at 8 AM on Saturday and Sunday. She remarked about how it says that they open at 8 AM before she walked away. I knocked on the door thinking maybe someone had locked it accidentally. The person who opened the door said that they were sold out and the door was that's why the door was locked. That was pretty confusing--out for the entire day, when you've been open for 2 1/2 hours maximum at this point? And then he started to shut the door and I asked: Wait, sold out of what? Because again I was very confused that they would have sold an entire days worth of pasta by 10:45 in the morning when it says that they are open until 9 PM on this particular day (didn't really seem like a sustainable business model). Apparently, they were out of whatever they serve for breakfast... I didn't even know that they offered breakfast. I knew that they had a retail section, and I assumed they opened at eight to sell retail items or some fresh pasta. So I clarified retail open at 11:30; he said yes, I'm alone, and he shut the door. He was really rude, brusque, and didn't really seem interested in helping me or alleviating any of my confusion, so although he issue where they don't say their hours are "breakfast until out", his attitude is on him. Better if they'd indicate that they're open from eight until ~~whenever run out for breakfast, and they open again at 11:30 for retail, rather than suggesting they're open from 8 am to 9 pm daily. This was an incredibly huge turn off. Food is not the only thing that makes a restaurant great and unfortunately, I think some restaurants, including Tortello, have forgotten that. It may say to Google for holiday hours, but probably it would be better to call (or *maybe* check their Instagram, assuming they keep it accurate). read more

What an experience! We came by for dinner on a Sunday afternoon. Parking is street parking and boy was it difficult to find something, there was a local festival going on nearby so it took us about 30 minutes to find parking, but needless to say it was so worth it. Once we came in we walked up to the counter to see their menus. Once ordered we picked our table and the food was brought out to us. We started with the focaccia and ricotta and honey. The bread came out warmed and the honey and the whipped ricotta spread beautifully on the bread and was a great start. We also got the burrata pomodoro which we were told that it just came back on the menu because it's finally tomato season. Let me tell you, I am obsessed with burrata and tomato. And this knocked my socks off. I was excited to eat every bites we even used the extra bread to spread it on to make a bruschetta type of bite and highly recommend to. The pasta dishes we got to try were the Tortelli, Squid Ink Bucatini, and their weekend special strozzapreti ricotta basilico e peperoncino. The tortelli was certainly worth the hype. The fresh pasta and the cheese on top and filling makes every bite magical. A must try dish. The squid ink pasta dish was beautiful, I'm not usually a fan of squid ink pasta but this plate was great and the prawns were super flavorful. The special pasta had a bit of a kick but the cream sauce and the noodles were worth the experience. We wrapped up our meal with the tiramisu. Probably one of my favorites I've had. The atmosphere was so fun, being able to watch them make pasta during our meal, see folks come in and buy fresh pasta to take home, and the bathrooms- it's like an Italian class! The pasta is great, but the main reason I keep coming back is the tiramisu. I do enjoy the pasta, but I personally don't find it tasty enough to be worth the price and smaller portion. What I like to do now, is to check their Instagram for the weekend special, and if I see one I'm particularly interested in, I'll plan to come for an early dinner to ensure a seat with no wait. Without fail, I'll order tiramisu with my meal every time. Eating the pasta is basically my excuse to come eat the tiramisu. There are many great pasta spots around that I would normally prefer, but none have a tiramisu as amazing as Tortello! I prefer to dine in because I did take out once, and the tiramisu portion was much smaller. To dine in, they'll let you know what table you can sit at when you enter. If there's a table, you'll order at the counter and take a number to your table. It's probably best to eat at off-times on the weekends if you don't want to wait. It can get quite crowded at peak hours. My favorite off the regular menu is the squid ink bucatini. I like the putanesca too, but I wish it was more savory. I usually make sure I eat something before or after dining here since the portions are small. As for the tiramisu, it's probably the best in Chicago. It's so creamy and full of flavor. It's more eggy than most places. Normally, I would find a tiramisu like this too rich, but there's an adequate amount of espresso to counteract this. In fact, there's so much espresso, that I usually have trouble sleeping if I eat the tiramisu too late in the evening. In conclusion, the tiramisu is always 10/10. read more

I knew this was counter service going in, and that was fine. The issue was how the whole meal unfolded. We ordered everything at once, but unlike other tables whose courses were paced, all of ours came at the same time--and a table that ordered after us even got their pasta before we received anything. After waiting 20+ minutes, our food finally arrived. We tried to order more wine, but despite being told staff had handhelds for that, no one came. My husband ended up standing in line for over five minutes for a carafe of wine while our food sat getting colder. Even the bread we started with was served cold and soggy. The Tagliatelle was a clumpy, cold mess that needed a knife to cut, and the tortelli had hard, undercooked bits. On top of that, I was given a dirty napkin with lipstick stains, we had no silverware until we went inside to grab some, and we even had to bus our own table. For the price, I expected far better. I would say this place is more of casual Italian dining restaurant, rather than a fine dining place. The decor is simple and basic, and the dining room is very well lit. I wouldn't come here for a romantic dinner. None of that is bad in anyway. It's actually quite nice to be able to walk in to a casual place, enjoy some Italian food without a white cloth dinner and candles. The unfortunate part is, you will still be paying fine dining prices here. You won't be getting the "casual" discount here. The pasta here is priced high for the portions you get. But the quality is definitely there. They make their pasta in house. When I walked in to pick up my order, I could see them making the pasta at the front window. Which is always nice to see. We ordered their Cacio e Pepe and their Aglio e Olio. Both pasta dishes were good, but the Aglio e Olio was the best out of the two. The Cacio e Pepe came with the traditional ingredients, black pepper and aged pecorino with bucatini. The Aglio e Olio came with spaghetti, full garlic cloves, chili, parsley and olive oil. This one came with a little heat. Something I usually don't seek in Italian dining, but it's nice to have every once in a while. I eat way too much spicy food, so I try to avoid spicy dishes in certain cuisines. Italian is one of them, the other is South and central American. They don't like spicy foods down there. Fresh pasta is real time, reality TV for me. I saw this place as we were biking and had high hopes for Tortello. It's a mix of a causal sit down, gourmet grocer and gourmet restaurant, everything is ordered by counter. Any place that takes the time to hand make pasta gets noticed, so we came here for dinner. I got the Duck Paparadelle, mostly a hearty tomato based pasta with chunks of shredded duck. The only striking impression was that it was hot off the oven and the cheese has caramelized on to the plate. For $29, it was perhaps the going rate for Italian, but I thought it was ok. The tortelli made for a nice shareable for the table. It's like a big Italian dumpling with cheese coated with sage infused olive oil, hazelnuts and balsamic vinegar. Simple, but delicious, probably the most beautiful and complicated of the handcraft pastas on the menu. You can get take home pasta to go, as well as other Italian products. It is pricier than at a normal store, Nutella for $28, despite being a large jar, seems high. Tortello has both indoor and covered sidewalk patio seating. The space is warm, quaint and charming, and if you want to have a mini-vacation to pseudo-Italy and experience fresh pasta, get an espresso and spritz, this place hits the check boxes. read more

OMG, where do I start. Family and friends had raved about Tortello and I was so excited, I don't know where to begin. First of all I do have to warn that this restuarant let's the food speak for itself, there are no frills here, it's almost self serve and the ambience is small but cute, not a lot wow factor of the space itself. But the food and the WOW and the selection of authentic Italian beers and drinks. It is pricey but we knew this going into it, it was one of the best meals we had in Chicago. I would say know what to expect before you go and know that you're paying for the quality of food. We ordered the squid pasta, the pesto, and the tortellini. We loved every bit of it.
