They got one star because you have to at least give them a one. We have been going to this place for 5 years and before that the one that was in Vermont. The "manager" was rude and food was of considerably less quality than ever. Manager said it has been this way for a long time. When asking why we were charged 18% gratuity she said on parties of more than 6 it is standard. Then she counted our party and said well 6 or more. For the record...Mexican food is not supposed to be sweet...It was slightly nauseating. I had to gamble on another dish that you wouldn't figure they could put sugar in, but, it still tasted faintly sweet. All the dinners on the specials menu had either honey or fruit listed in them. After not eating here for decades I have been here twice within the past month. Last month we were here for lunch after a funeral, and our party of 11 had excellent service and delicious food at lunch time. Tonight at dinner our food was delicious, but we were only two people, and the service was terrible. My cousin went to the ladies room, and we had a good long wait after she came back before our server came around to take a drink order. She didn't give us much time on our appetizers before delivering our entrees. She never came back to ask how our food was, but when she saw my cousin had stopped eating, she asked if we needed boxes. I said I was still eating, and my cousin said not yet, and did go back and eat more. Then we kept waiting and waiting for drink refills for at least an hour as she ignored us and walked by us while helping other tables. By the time she finally asked, my cousin was so pissed off at her that she opted for no refill, but I took mine. The server lost any chance at selling a dessert, which she didn't even offer, because she was so bad. The place was not full or busy, and head plenty of people working, so there was no excuse. I still left her a 15% tip (I normally tip 20-25%) but my cousin left her less than 10%. Oh, we had requested separate checks, and at the end she brought us one check, so we had to wait for her to come back with new checks. With the number of Mexican restaurants in NH with as good or better food than here, we don't need to put up with bad service. The service a few weeks ago was a 5, but today was a 1, so that's why I gave 3 stars as I am basing my review purely on service as there is nothing spectacular about the menu here. read more

Stop by for 1st time and walk out very disappointed as the tortillas for my fajitas were on a foil felt super cold like out of the fridge. The rice and beans also were very cold. The service was very slow for an empty place took about 6 mins for someone to come to the table and great us. The food was far from good for the $17.99 price tag as it was just cold and tasteless. Just had a one of the worst dining experiences ever! Although the food was passable, the service left much to be desired. Aside from some very loud and unruly patrons, a server..who was serving others in our area went out of his way to throw bottles and slam items very loudly at the service station behind us. We suspect he did this purposely, as I had to raise my voice when placing our order to a level of yelling to be heard by our server. Although we have frequented this place over the last 2 years, I will vote with my wallet...and not be going back. Our server got one of our orders wrong, but we accepted it, as we waited about 20 minutes to place the order, and we were hungry. By the time we got to eat it was quiet enough to have table conversation, but our nerves were shot from the din prior. All in all a terrible experience. read more

Love this place! Some of the best drinks in the area (and never weak) and such a great atmosphere to boot. This was a very interesting looking place. Looks like a log cabin inside. The atmosphere at this place was top-notch. However, the food here was not that great. Nothing major dissappointing, but we did not care for the rice and the margaritas were terrible (it was like 3 parts alcohol to 1 part mix). If you like getting a buzz with drinking alcohol, you will get it here. If you are looking for a good-tasting alcoholic drink, this is not the place for you. You will feel a lot after only one drink. All in all, not a terrible place. Would we come back if we were in town again? Probably not. read more

Stopped in for some simple tacos for me a a burrito for my son. Service slow and very poor. Ordered 4 tacos with 3 simple ingredients, beef lettuce and tomato. Well I receive tomato on 1 of the 4. The food had good flavor but the service is the reason for the low rating. read more

I went here a while ago, and probably was too young (tweenage) to really appreciate Mexican food other than Taco Bell. However, while I didn't like my tacos, I loved the enchiladas I had the next time I went; the sauce, extra cheese and good sour cream portions made an impression upon me, and for dessert, I was ticked pink by the fried ice cream. read more

I am completely disgusted by the food and service. Rarely do I give a one star but if I could I would give NO stars. First off, I told the staff it was a special day, my daughters 21st birthday. We ordered appetizers and her first drink, after 20 minutes the appetizers came without plates to share and missing guacamole and sour cream, which were supposed be included but the server vanished and we had to wait until she came back with our drinks. The drinks came 10 minutes later and not as requested, she asked for a sugar rim to her drink and they put salt, we asked for plates and our missing condiments, which took another 20 minutes to arrive, so the appetizers were cold. We ordered our food, it took over an hour to arrive, cold..dried out and almost uneatable, My daughter was so embarrassed that she asked us to take her here that she cried and begged us not to complain. I am sorry but when the staff knows its a special day they should at least TRY. over 2 hours of agony, for her 21st Birthday. SHAME on you read more

Totilla Flat is right up the street from where I work, and when I lived here in Merrimack, (years ago!), I always had fond memories. Those memories seem to have been tequilla induced. The food was blah. We ordered, and it came out within 10 minutes. How is that accomplished unless its already made and waiting under those oh so flavor inducing heat lights? Taking cues from other culinary delights, such as McDonald's? Not a great idea...Refried beans had what I like to call a layer of hardness to them the rice was meh, the quesadilla/enchilada combo was about as flavorful as tortilla's covered in Ragu and cheese (pretty much what it was), not even a bit of spice! The margarita's were excellent though, strong and great tasting. If you end up going here, I suggest sticking with the margarita's and maybe the free chips and salsa. read more

Ate here while traveling for work. Really good Mexican food for being non authentic. Had the fajitas. They had a very good flavor. Salsa was pretty good also. We ate in the restaurant so we could talk, but there was live music in the bar area. It was an intimate setting also, not a big stage production. read more

I've come to this restaurant on and off for 30 years. The years in-between I've lived in Boston (11 years), Clearwater FL (4 years), and McLean VA (3 years). All of which are great "foodie" towns. The thing that keeps me coming back to Tortilla Flat is the enchilladas. The cheese enchilada and seafood enchiladas specifically. They are delicious, and I've never been able to replicate them at home, even with Mexican cheeses on hand. The chicken with lime is very good also. Admittedly, I don't like anything super-spicy, but you can always request more spice if you want it. Also the service is not the best. But it's a great little place to hang out with friends and have some quality (ie not fast food) Mexican food. It's also a cool old building, although I've never seen any ghosts. It isn't fancy, but it's good. Recommending the enchilladas. read more

Tortilla Flat was once in Burlington, VT and every one we knew enjoyed the Food, the service, the atmosphere, the drinks, the waiters, the bartender, right down to the décor. If you want fish go to a fish market, give me a break! We are so sad that Tortilla Flat left us here in VT. We actually travel to NH just to have a bite to eat and ALWAYS bring back their sauce for the Nacho's. When we head to Maine or MA, we do a detour to Tortilla Flat. Never been before, the inside is very nice. Sat at a table in the bar. Got two appetizers and it took 25 minutes to get! Nachos were fine but the chicken wings were more like pigeon wings, they were very tiny,cold and meat dry when they finally arrived. I sent back and got the same ones back just a little warmer and dried up. Not very impressed. Service was so so but not very good. Wait staff were very nice though. Didn't realize you could get taco chips and salsa yourself for free until we heard another table being told that. By that time we were almost done. They were very nice but very slow. My bf and I stopped in for what we thought would be a quick dinner last night. Service was slow and we never saw the server unless she was bringing food. We had to ask for drink refills while we sat over twenty minutes for chimichangas and enchiladas. There was another party in our little room that waited so long that half the party had to get up and leave. They had a worse experience than us, with the incompetent staff bagging up the wrong meals, and having no idea what was in what package that they ultimately brought to the table. The mini chimichanga plate with rice and beans was dismal. I could have got better from the grocery store freezer. The sauces with it were just weird and the rice and beans were horrendous. The only silver lining was that they took the extra $2 for the rice and beans of the bill. I pulled out two twenties to pay or $27 bill and the waitress said "thanks have a good night!" Umm no, go get our change. She then brought three ones and a ten..guess she realized three bucks would be a generous tip for the service we received. Steer clear of this place! read more

My husband & I went here one night and weren't too impressed with the food. He ordered the 3 enchilada plate & I got a chicken enchildada & a bround beef taco. My husband thought the enchilada sauce tasted similar to spaghetti sauce, it was very thick, nothing we've ever had before! If you like spice, don't go here.. Nothing is really spicy at all & the only was to add any kind of spice is by jalapenos. Even the table salsa wasn't hot in the slightest! The place was dimly lit, if you don't get a table under a lamp forget about being able to see your table very well, we happened to be 1 of those unlucky couples! We won't go back again, while the server was nice & helpful she was a bit slow (our chile con queso dip was brought out cold, refills, etc.) for having 3 tables, one being a large party, but still....the place wasn't busy at all. You could hear the servers talking loudly & laughing in the back, kind of annoying. I prefer La Carreta's hand-down. read more

My review of Tortilla Flat mirrors my review of Espresso Pizza of Nashua, NH. The place hasn't changed one bit in 30 years and that's a good thing. It's a throwback from 1970-something... an earlier and better age. I agree wholeheartedly with other thin-skinned reviewers that the waitstaff is often absent and distracted. A host/hostess is generally present when you don't need one and absent when you do need one. The bartenders are also frequently absent or distracted. So what? Toughen up complainers! I bet your parents didn't spank you (enough) as children. Spotty service is the hallmark of a great establishment! The food is just fine, especially in portion size and price. If you weren't so alternately timid and cranky, you might actually ask to have it done a certain way, extra this, or extra that. The Espinaca Burrito is my wife's favorite and I like their microbrewed IPA. Tortilla is an icon... a casual throwback from an earlier age... not a place for thin skinned sissies or wannabe restaurant reviewers. read more

My family has been coming here for almost 3 years. We love coming here. It's the only Mexican food we've been able to find that actually has some flavor. The shredded chicken has the best flavor in everything made. We came in tonight and Danielle really took care of us in a timely manner and our drinks came out quick. I was sad tonight though because i came in for something specific i got off the specials menu the last time that i loved and when i came in wanting it again it couldn't be made again even by request. Something i would love to see is (i can't remember the name sorry! But it was apart of the weekly specials menu on July 10th) the homemade deep fried enchiladas trio that had chicken, pork, and beef and really Mexican cheese on top added to part of the regular menu. Anything Mexican that is deep fried fresh screams really Mexican to me not something out of a box unfortunately like the taco shells served here. If you made home made shells that would be a game changer since you can't find that anywhere else except in CA! Trust me I've searched everywhere! read more

Our experience was absolutely terrible. It started with me calling ahead as we had a party of 10 and wanted to make sure they could accommodate. I was told very rudely that they didn't take reservations, but the girl did take my name down just to be helpful and told me to call again before we arrived on Saturday night. I called again prior to us driving down and the women I spoke with informed that she didn't know why the other lady took my name or suggested that I call bc they don't do either of those things and basically we would have to chance it. It was my best friends b-day and this is were she wanted to go so we went. Upon arriving and a relatively empty parking lot we had to wait to be seated. The waitress never refilled our chips or salsa and forget to essentially check on us. Which was stupid on her part as we were all parents on a kid free night.......Once we got the check we had asked her to separate it out and she refused and gave me a piece of paper and told me we had to figure it out. Needless to say we still had a good time, but were beyond disappointed in the service and the food was just okay. I will never return to Tortilla Flat and really don't understand the business model that doesn't want to make accommodations for a party as 10 as that could be a nice profit. read more
