My parents came here on dates when they were younger and I don't think much has changed. The place has a homey yet funky decor. They have a huge selection of tequila and other drinks. The bar is huge and wraps around most of the place. The bartender who always is there when I am there is awesome. Always a friendly smile and recommendations. Food is served quick and is fresh. Definetly not a chain restaurant. Prices are reasonable. Last night I had a steak quesdilla with a cooling avocado creme sauce. It was hot and filling. I also had a House margarita a bargain at six bucks and it was huge. One was plenty. Flats, as my friends and I lovingly call it, has earned my extra star. Why does it deserve this, you may ask? Well, first off, I have been finding myself at the bar there more and more. Friendly service, decent tex mex, and yes, of course, the awesome margaritas have made my husband and I regulars over the years. Since my last review, I think the food here has grown on me since I've found a few items that are pretty damn good. The garden quesadilla is filled with fresh veggies and is perfectly paired with their tasty cucumber salad. I also really enjoy both their fish (catfish) and their shrimp tacos. They are a bit pricier, but are very good. If you want something a bit cheaper, their chili is a very good option. It is paired with a buttery giant hunk of their house-made cornbread. They have a rotating specials menu, including drinks (margaritas, mason jar cocktails, and frozen concoctions), apps, entrees and desserts. I typically go with their awesomely strong margaritas (skinny on the rocks with salt is my usual go-to) but I've had an awesome frozen mojito recently that was pretty delish. They also have a pretty good, but small, draft selection for the beer lover. As I've mentioned in my previous review, it can get pretty busy on the weekends and evenings as it isn't far from Brown and their margaritas are pretty famous in the area. I recommend grabbing a spot at the bar if you can, as their bartenders are super friendly and helpful. Surrounded by some rough areas of Providence with a mixture of the college crowd this Mexican place fits quite well in this setting. Had a lady convince me to try my first margarita ever and it sure didn't disappoint. Ended up going with the Pomegranate and Mango Flavor in which I totally recommend trying. I've been here a handful of times and the food is pretty tasty. I'm very impressed with the service above all. I've actually had the same waitress each time I've been here and she is fantastically pleasant, which makes everything approximately a billion times better. I tend to order the same thing, but different variations of dish -- I love chimichangas, this time I had it with pork, and that was not a regrettable decision! The chimichanga itself is pretty large, with a generous topping of fresh guacamole (woohoo!) and a side of rice and a shredded cucumber salad. I like the mole sauce as a compliment it, it seems to pair well and tastes especially good with the pork. Drink margarita, rinse, repeat. They're exceptionally good. Also, the blood orange sangria, wow. Very impressed. You can see how impressed I am, as my friend and I are downing a pitcher with straws, shamelessly. I had to knock off one-star for the tragically aloof hostess, the unbelievable ear-splitting volume of a vast majority of the students that go here, and the lack of a good chipotle sauce! It's maybe a little unfair to judge this place against El Rancho Grande, but...man, how can you not? We have driven by this place for years and finally decided to dine there on Cinqo de Mayo. We went for an early dinner. And we were told it was a 45 minute wait. Well, the wait was barely 15 minutes. My husband is a beer drinker so he order some random beer and it came in a nice sized glass. I ordered the house margarita. It came in a large plastic cup. We split the sliders. Delicious. My husband ate most of them. Then we had the spice is nice quesadilla. Yummmmmy! They don't skimp on the alcohol at all. Thank goodness I wasn't driving. Haha. The special grilled burrito appears to be boiled chicken and sautéed green peppers, onions and canned corn with a side of boxed rice and canned refried beans. Lots of cheese....I mean a lot!! The chips and salsa were a bag of store bought chips (still in the bag) and their "homemade" salsa. High hope for salsa , but no... We've been wanting to hit this place for years and what a perfect night..Cinco de Mayo!!! Nope... not even close. At almost 50 bucks for two burritos and chips and salsa, a big disappointment. Quick weekend lunch ended up at Tortilla Flats (http://www.tortillaflatsri.com/), one of the few good Mexican food in Rhode Island. Started off with the Buffalo Chicken Nachos, made with homemade fries covered in shredded Chicken, Buffalo Sauce, Blue Cheese and Shredded Cheese. A delicious starter, or enough to be a meal. These delicious nachos were followed by the meal, my meal was the Slider Trio. Which included a Buffalo Chicken Slider, Pulled Pork Slider, and Traditional Cheese Burger Slider. A little bit of everything, this was a wonderful sampler plate. I have to say the Cheese Burger slider was the best of the three, followed closely by Pulled Pork Slider The Buffalo Chicken Slider was average and had a hard time competing after the Buffalo Chicken Nachos. My lunch guest ordered a combo plate including an Enchilada and a Tamale, with sides of Rice and Beans. Everything had great flavor and the Tamale was cooked traditionally in the corn husk. Both topped with a delicious Enchilada sauce and plenty of cheese. A great place for Lunch or Dinner, this has been one of our lunch favorites for sometime now. Sadly we tend to get the same waitress every time, and time after time she is a miserable host with a rather disgusting attitude. When I go to a restaurant I look at the food first, that is the most important part, but the next thing is the wait staff. When you are greeted with a smile and the waiter or waitress happily waits on you, you pair this with good food and you have a great review. Sadly that's not the case here.. Luckily the food compensates for her reoccurring rudeness. Before leaving we saw a table order the desserts, while we just got a glimpse they looked phenomenal! Came here quickly with a friend to get an appetizer. We ended up getting the buffalo chips which were very tasty if your into buffalo sauce incorporated menu items. The interior was nice they had a decent size bar which I would probably sit at next time but it was a long day so wanted to relax in a booth. Service was good. I was disappointed that this Mexican joint didn't serve complimentary chips and salsa I believe it's 2.50 per order. Oh Tortilla Flats we returned for another dinner with the kids. Good drinks. The Queso Fundido was another planet. It should not be microwaved, yuck. I think you need to visit Mexico Garabaldi or ViVa Mexico to try a more authentic version. It was gummy and tasted like cheese wiz. After chatting with a friend at the bar she told me they had sent theirs back too. I ordered a Tamale with Verdi sauce, and eat arrived was bizarre. A tamale with a bit of sauce and melted cheese. If you have ever eaten a tamale melted cheese is a no no. Should have sauce , shredded cheese and Con Queso cheese. I have been here about 3 times and each time was worse than the time before. The food is some of the most flavorless food ever. I had shredded beef tacos that literally tasted like boiled beef that had absolutely no salt or seasoning. It was watery and made the tacos soggy. Bath water would be more appetizing. The sauce that accompanied the tacos lacked any heat or salt or flavor. I don't know how they have survived this long. Perhaps their drinks and their location attribute to that but their food is not worth the money and I wouldn't eat it if it were free. Not to mention my friend ordered tacos as well and one didn't even have the meat in it. They forgot the meat and gave her a taco with just cheese and lettuce. I agree with the reviews that this place is not authentic...it is tex mex. However I really enjoyed the food here! We went on a Thursday night and it was quite busy...waited for about 30 mins for a table for 2. Street parking only, but easy enough to find. We got the queso and guacamole dips to start which were both delicious. They offer chips and salsa for starters, too. For my meal I opted for the veggie/black bean chimichanga. The only complaint I had was they didn't fill it all the way so some bites I was just eating fried tortilla. Not sure if this was just because it was the veggie option but if I were to order this again I would tell them to stuff it a bit more. What really made the meal were the drinks!! This place is neat and can't wait to check it out again!! So firstly, street parking is pretty much expected in this area of Providence. My party went at around 6:30 for margarita pitchers and some chips/queso/salsa after a long day and we were able to find parking easily. I can't comment too much on the food, but according to my friends, it's very hit or miss. But the margarita was lovely!! They had different salsas and all of them were a good level of spice. I just love this place. Some of the best margaritas I've ever had. The food is very good - especially the chili con queso (Tip: try it without chili but add tomatoes, chourico and jalapeños...epic, trust me). The burgers are on a brioche roll which I know is not unique but it really works here. They are just so so good. This place does not serve Mexican food. It serves a kind of Applebees lite version of what someone thinks Mexican food might be like. That being said its also not a dive bar. A dive bar has a good atmosphere and cheap drinks. This place has a miserable atmosphere and awful margaritas as its main fixture. A lot of people seem to think its a college-y Brown student bar. It barely rises to that level. Last time I was in there (we were only drinking thankfully) we saw a rat in the kitchen. My hus and I had been wanting to try this place for a while, but it was always so packed we would be told it was an hour wait! No thanks. The other night we finally got in. I ordered the Chimichungas, as I assumed it was like a chimichanga, and I was right. I opted for shredded chicken based on another Yelp review, and I was quite pleased with it. It was properly cooked, tasty, topped with guacamole (really avocado puree here) and came with a side of rice and a little cucumber salad. It was fine. I like the atmosphere. It was very open and rustic in a charming way. The waitress was friendly, and we had good service. Amigos mios, I have mentioned before that I spent most of my life a few miles from the Mexican border and have traveled quite a bit in various parts of Mexico. I grew up on cheap, excellent Tex-Mex food, but have also cultivated a taste for the cuisines of places like Mexico City and Veracrúz. Sí, my total life experience has made me a real cabrón when it comes to Mexican food. I am hyper-critical. I don't like to see this amazing cuisine abused. So, Tortilla Flats. This is not Tex-Mex. It's Tex-Mess. The menu is a schitzophrenic mashup of pseudo-Mexican, vegan, New England wannabe hipster and California oh-how-I-wish-I-was-cool-but-sadly-I'm-just-lame. I saw nothing on the menu that looked remotely authentic aside from a tamale (and given our experience with what we DID order, grácias al Señor that I passed this up). Chips: hard, tough, flavorless. Salsa: Just WEIRD. What do they put in this stuff? It's not the hotness (I LOOOOVE hot!), it's some ingredient in there that just doesn't belong, like okra or eggplant or tofu or ram's bladder or some damb thing. Ick. Guacamole: If you've ever had poi in Hawai'i, this is the green version... a flavorless, starchy paste that makes Cream of Wheat seem exciting. Baja Tacos: Tortilla Flats' take on the iconic, beloved fast food of San Diego county. There, it's a riot of textures and flavors that leaves you breathlessly, burpingly begging for more. Here, the only flavor was garlic (way too much, and that's coming from a guy who would walk around with garlic cloves up his nose if he could get away with it). Garlic, attempting to make up for the fact that everything else in the preparation was utterly flavorless, without a trace of any herb or spice. Rubio wept (sorry, inside joke for the San Diego crowd). Whatever beef quesadilla thing my SO had: Okay, so my woman is a true New Englander. She has little tolerance for chiles or intense spiciness of any kind (I'm re-learning how to cook... HAHAHA). When she says something is BLAND, you know it is pretty much like a big old plate of Wonder Bread soaked in warm nonfat milk. I took a taste. The beef was dry and overcooked, there was no trace of salt, pepper, garlic, cumin, onion, ANYTHING... puta madre, they even managed to find cheese that had no flavor. I'm told this place is popular. We went on a Thursday night at 8:00 after visiting a friend in the hospital, and the wait staff was TOTALLY overwhelmed... we sat for nearly twenty minutes before we even got water and had a chance to put in drink and appetizer orders. I gotta tell you, I do not get it. What's the appeal here? Is this place for posers who actually hate Mexican food and truly love Yankee pot roast but want to PRETEND they're into foreign cuisines? I'm stumped. This was quite possibly the worst meal I've had anywhere in Rhode Island, and the place was packed. Qué lástima! If you want Americanized Mexican that isn't 100% flavor-free, try Cancún on Route 44 or Tapatio on Atwood on the Johnston/Cranston line... they're both plenty dumbed-down, but at least their food doesn't taste like boiled turnips and cardboard. Tortilla Flats: One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor... I sincerely believe that the above statement properly sums up the Tortilla Flats experience and no additional review is necessary. However, in the spirit of fairness and informing the reader about this popular Tex-Mex joint, I guess I'll carry on. ;) Anyways! Tortilla Flats is one of those places where things are truly hit-or-miss. There are a number of reasons for this, but it does deliver precisely what it promises. This restaurant is typically very busy. That's because it has got some prime real estate! Not only is it down the street from Brown University; it is also close to apartment living for many other local universities, including Johnson & Wales and RISD. This means college students with cash to blow, and also university faculty and staff who are very well-paid. All in walking distance from a restaurant that is too small to really support demand. That's one of the kickers about Tortilla Flats. It has a beautiful interior. I love the wooden benches and such. But because of the oversized seating, there isn't enough! You can sometimes wait forever to eat/drink here... ..Which doesn't make all that much sense, considering that the only real perk to Tortilla Flats over any other Tex-Mex location is that it's in stumbling distance for people with cash flow. So yeah, Tortilla Flats can get pretty darn crowded. That's fine and all. I can deal with a packed bar. But I don't go to a Tex-Mex place to just drink; if I really wanted tequila, I'd go pretty much anywhere and have a marg. The whole point is to go and enjoy the food! Unfortunately... the food isn't really all that stellar. The rice and beans are as plain as can be, which works and yet also isn't a real reason to order the Mezclar Combinar (combo plate) other than the fact that it's cheaper than purchasing the individual items. The enchiladas are pretty good, but a lot of their meat is dry. The veggie option is more of the same bland rice and beans. So either way, the filling inside your enchilada, or tamale, or taco is going to be tough to chew. Bummer! Their nachos are plenty to share and could pretty much make a meal for two or three. They've got some good nachos! Margaritas are delicious, a good price, a bit strong, and come in pitchers for larger parties. But to be honest, there are SO many great mexican restaurants on the west side--I'm not sure why anyone would prioritize tortilla flats. It doesn't have the view/location of lola's, and it certainly does NOT have the authenticity of chilangos or el rancho grande. My greatest grievance: NO FREE CHIPS. There's an old saying: the more liquor, the more loud-mouth. Ok - that's not an old saying. But what *I'M* saying is...*ahem, WHAT I'M SAYING IS that Thursday night's dinner was really...REALLY loud. We came, we put our name in, we order beverages. When *hiccup* we had finally been seated, our server had put on a smile but seemed a little distracted. After a few passes we finally were able to attract her attention to place our orders. For an appetizer we passed over the alligator option (?? in RI?!) and selected the Coconut Shrimp - huge shrimp with knock-out flavor. My entree selection was the Veggie Quesadilla (served with pickled cucumber - yum!), while the boys chose hearty plates pooling with tamales, corn bread, tacos, pulled pork, and enchiladas ("you pick three" isn't just for Panera, people!). Certainly enough food (enough for two meals, in fact), but our server seemed eager to turn the table... I will say - if you're looking to drink enough tequila to take on the worm: this is your place. Drink prices hover between 5-14$ and TWO delivered me to Happytown (without next-morning grumbling). The Hot Pepper Margarita was "a perfect three": tall, sweet, and spicy. But whether or not one margarita is worth making the same face as their logo (a sad mad leaning on his hands in despair) is up to you. However, if you want a creative take on some Mexican classics, this might be your place. After experiencing Tortilla Flats well over a dozen times I can safely say that the quality of the food and service is terrible. I'm not sure if the kitchen staff cares what they produce and the waitstaff needs a period of instruction on . . . well, everything. I almost always get the California Chicken Burrito. They used to grill the outside of the finished wrap, leaving distinct "grill lines" and a pleasant charred flavor; those days are gone. The last few times I have eaten at Tortilla Flats the burrito was served at room temperature. The salsa (Mild, Hot, or Mixed) will leave you with peppery-garlic funk breath for at least 36 hours after ingestion; it is not fun. The Margaritas are decent. My date once ordered a vegetarian salad, when it arrived there was a piece of chicken right on top of one of the wilted pieces of lettuce; it seemed intentional. The service is usually very poor. So I don't have anything new or startling to say...just more to say about The Flats. The main reason to come is still to have margaritas (legit, my friends and I will text each other "do you want to get rita drunk?" if we are debating coming here). A house margarita will run you $6 and they are potent. Typically the more you order, the more booze they contain as the night goes on. My suggestion, have a DD or a place that is within stumbling distance or take a nice long walk before calling it a night. Caution though, it seems if the bartender is overwhelmed you will get an abnormally salty drink, which I think people (including us) need to get in the habit of sending back to tell them to watch it with the salt sometimes. The cucumber jalapeño margarita is SPICY. Almost too spicy to drink when I had it on saturday. The food is what it is. I suggest always getting a basket of chips and salsa so you have something on the table as the margaritas set in. I always get the cactus flower with black beans, and for $7 its filling. Authentic? Nope. A new discovery (to me at least) is the plain chili, plain = vegetarian in their book. For $4.99 you get a decent sized bowl and a gigantic piece of buttery light cornbread. Get it for the cornbread alone, folks. Their specials actually look appetizing, I am just never hungry enough for a large meal when I go here...plus sometimes things are disappointing and over priced. Not going to talk up their food...thats not possible. There is always a wait, but I will applaud the servers as they have gotten a bit more attentive as of late. I haven't been left sitting hoping to get another round or the check like I normally have. They also are preemptively now giving water to those ordering 'rites. Ok... I'll admit. If you want authentic Mexican cuisine, this isn't the place to go. However, if you're in the mood for good, wholesome, generously-sized Mexican dishes, come here immediately. It's definitely the best Mexican option on the east side of Providence. First of all, the margarita's are a must. A pitcher is enough to make a two people sufficiently buzzed, and sufficiently satisfied. Not to mention: they're delicious. My favorite option on the menu is picking between two or three options as a combo (I call it the "You Pick Two" or "You Pick Three," for all you Panera fans). I've never been able to finish three combo items, but I've certainly tried; I especially like the burritos and the tamales. Poor Tortilla Flats. There are so many other, better Mexican restaurants in Providence. It is really hard to compete. I will give them credit, they do have average food but they excel in making those margaritas and carrying some top shelf tequilas. Flats is in a great location, far enough away from Hope Street so you can get some parking. With the focus on the bar, it would have been nice if they opened up the huge wall that is behind the bar for some open air. Get this feeling like a true Mexican place, right? On the plus side, these people KNOW how to make a drink. If this was just strictly a bar, it would be a five star review. However, the food is very lackluster to the point of bland. And not particularly plentiful. The prices are ok. However, not exactly bang for your buck. The service is mixed. I have had awful waitresses and great waitresses.
