My husband and I are in Petaluma to celebrate our anniversary. We walked around and checked out menus. We saw this new restaurant, Tortilla Real, was open and decided we wanted Mexican food. We made the right choice! The server was wonderful and attentive and the food was amazing! My husband had the Torta ahogada and I had the carne asada plate- everything was very fresh and tasted great. The corn tortillas were also made fresh and so good! His sandwich was incredible! The bread was a family recipe and loaded with pork. We could not believe the size of the portions of pork and carne asada. One word: Pozole!! Or posole. However you want to spell it, they make an amazing bowl of soup here. I like the pork, my husband likes the chicken. I love the oregano they put on the side. It's such a clean tasting Pozole, always tastes so fresh. The quesabirria is also super good, the dipping sauce is major umami. Yummy fish tacos on handmade tortillas. Chips and guacamole are great. Tortilla Real is no strip mall taco joint. Like the famed Margarita, they are keeping it top-shelf. They strive for flavorful and authentic and their house made tortillas and chips are a solid start. The decor blends the expected with the unexpected, comfortable enough for families and hip enough for date-night. They have a good selection of beer and local wines, plus some "not on every wine list" selections from Vallee de Guadalupe, MX. We had vegetarian tacos, rice, beans, chips and guac. The portions were large and we appreciated the chunks of fresh grilled carrot, squash, onions and corn in addition to the standard beans in our tacos. The guac was fresh and flavorful. This is also a great place for taco-truck aficionados to cut their teeth on some more complex Mexican dishes. On my list to try are their Agua Chile de Camaron (shrimp cocktail), the Corn Pancakes on the brunch menu and the Quesabirrias when they are back on the day's specials. They offer two sections of dog-friendly outdoor seating dressed-up with globe lights, tropical plants and colorful Mexican pottery. Well the food seems authentic and good. Service is pitiful and if you order your food from DoorDash to be delivered it's worse then pitiful. If the restaurant forgets to place an item that you paid for in the bag then you have to contact DoorDash and have them refund your payment or have the item they forgot to place in your to go bag redelivered. If your food arrives cold it could be that the door dasher was delivering food to other customers before you got yours or the dasher was late picking up the order. So cold food I blame on the dasher missing food I blame on the restaurant. There are so many Mexican restaurants to eat at in town that I'd think they'd all be on their game to exceed expectations. So tonight we had a friend over for dinner, the restaurant dropped the bal and neglected to place an item in the bag. I'm sure it's not the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last time. So a note to the dining establishment.... Double checking the order tags with the to go bags would probably be a smart idea! read more

my aunt and i went to tortilla real on one of the recent gloomy days. we were in the area and figured we give tortilla real a try to which we found the best pozolé and tortilla soup in town ! 1000/10 recommend. not to mentioned the chips and salsa as a starter were so fresh, a great appetizer to say the least. read more

Food and cocktails were amazing!! I got the quesabirria and carnitas taco and they were both fantastic. My husband got huevos rancheros and he said it was great. My Paloma was on point and his pina colada had orange flavored whipped cream (it should only be this way). We had stopped by the petaluma visitor center and they gave us a coupon for guacamole and chips free. It was an overflowing bowl of fresh chips and really fresh guacamole. Recently discovered Tortilla Real after looking through reviews for Mexican restaurants in Petaluma and wanting to try something different in the area. I saw many glowing reviews and I am SO glad that I went and tried Tortilla Real, because the food is outstanding and exponentially better than any other Mexican restaurant in Petaluma! Started off with their flautas as an appetizer and they were delicious! Loved the green sauce that they used on them, the chicken inside was delicious, and they were friend perfectly crispy. Also sampled an assortment of tacos, the fish and the carne asada and they were both outstanding. The carne asada is honestly some of the absolute best I have ever had. It blows away anything I have had in the North Bay area. It's amazing how much of a staple this is at just about every Mexican restaurant, and yet so many places have not the slightest clue on how to actually make GOOD carne asada! This was delicious, tender, flavorful, grilled perfectly, I can't say enough good things. I had to order an additional taco just because I enjoyed it so much. The fish taco was also wonderful, fried perfectly without being heavy or oily, it had a wonderful sauce accompanying it, the fish itself tasted fresh, a total winner! On another recent outing we tried the quesabirria and that was also delicious! The meat inside was incredibly tender, it was loaded with cheesy goodness, and the consomme to dip it in was so rich and and flavorful. The whole dish came together perfectly and was great to share as an appetizer. Also tried one of their shrimp tacos this trip and that was also outstanding! The shrimp was battered perfectly, also not heavy or oily, a delicious sauce accompanied it on the tortilla, one of the best shrimp tacos I've had! Also, their tortillas themselves are fantastic and you can tell are home made! Literally, every single item I have tried here I have loved and not one single thing has disappointed! The people are very nice and super friendly, I feel it is priced right for the quality and quantity of food you receive, I wholeheartedly recommend Tortilla Real to anyone looking for excellent Mexican cuisine! read more

Our first experience was getting a small order of food to go. Service was quick and food was fresh and hot. The fish tacos were excellent. Carnitas were very good and not fatty like many places. We got a side of beans which had an off taste like cigarette ash (smoker in the kitchen?). We also got an order of guacamole and house made chips. The chips were additive! So light and crispy. The guacamole was pretty good but a bit too acidic, as was the salsa. Overall we liked the food and will come in to dine on other traditional dishes. read more

We ordered take out tonight and this place is great! We had the Ensalada Real and Chicken Enchiladas - both were delicious. The salad was definitely a cut above the usual Mexican restaurant - fresh greens including some kale, black beans, a bit of cheese and we added some grilled chicken. Served with a nice lemon cilantro dressing. The enchiladas were also well prepared and generous portions. This is a nice addition to Petaluma's array of restaurants - we've been waiting for a Mexican place with healthier fresher ingredients- I think it's arrived. We will be back. read more

Service was horrible. Waited 20 minutes to be greeted by our server (short lady, glasses, pony tail). Then waited another 10 minutes for our drinks. Requests for more salsa, salt and refills went in one ear and out the other. Where is our server? We even asked another server for a salsa refill and she told us she was too busy and is not our server (dark curly-ish hair, pony tail.) Wow. Such team work. Just wow. Rice was bland, asada taco decent, chicken tinga ok, not the best. Server even brought the wrong burrito. It can happen, but it didn't score any points after all her other failures. Not a fan of the famous house-made tortilla, either but that's just personal taste. We will not return because of these servers who absolutely know nothing about service. We tipped her accordingly. No fun, seeing as just last night we tipped a server $50 for two people because of her awesomeness, in a pizza place, even. We WANT to tip and tip well, but not for this bucket of frustration.
