I understand when places get busy and it is hard to be attentive to all tables...however, it was not busy at all and it took 30 minutes for the server to come to us to even get our drink orders. This review is long overdue, since I came in for lunch during Restaurant Week on the last day of January. Here's the bottom line--based solely on this one meal, fairly or not, I'm sure I won't go back. I loved sitting inside this place, especially once it came alive after the start of the formal lunch hour (a buddy and I arrived at 11:30, so the place was dead at that point). The salad? Lovely. Our server? Friendly. But the seafood dish served as a part of the RW menu was a miss--I was skipping meat that day, and this turned out to be a mistake as my partner got the prime rib sandwich and he kept rubbing it in on how good that sammie was--so my main was not great. Dessert was also a miss...although I guess sorbets can be your thing if you are looking for something light to finish off a meal. And these sorbets were fine but again, nothing to write home about. Love the location and this is a good place to hit before/after some of the scene-y spots to hit in River North or the Loop. But in terms of the food, I think you can do better. read more

Great menu to many entrees to mention, but it's Chicago Restaurant Week, and who cares a three-course lunch is merely $22 and a great Martini's is only $6. Is this heaven or what? Who needs anything but a martini for an appetizer. We opened our meal with a full bodied and wonderful bowl or pea soup. This wasn't your typical pea soup by any stretch. The salads were very good as well. We had a couple entrees first was White Fish, Herb Crusted, Roasted Tomato, Grilled Artichoke, Olive, Couscous and an entree of Ahi Tuna all were Excellent!! Dessert well who could resist tortoise pie, a signature dessert of chocolate, walnuts, whipped cream and bourbon-caramel sauce. Amazing! We also had an order of Rosé Sorbet, Always good. The musicians played a smart mix of jazz standards and Christmas music (we went about a week before Christmas). We also got the complimentary stuffed bread that was just amazing. For my entree I had the NY strip. It was tender and cooked just the way I liked it. One of my colleagues had the scallops and 2 others had the sea bass and they all loved it. For dessert we had the bananas foster & peanut butter cake. This was the best place we ate in Chicago while my boyfriend and I were there for our birthday weekend. Not only were we treated like VIPs from the moment we entered but the food was beyond amazing, the live jazz was perfect and our waiter was beyond attentive & funny at the same time (in a good way). The owner greeted us with a hand signed birthday card and offered us a mini bottle of prosecco to begin our birthday celebration. FOOD For the food, I had their bourbon meatloaf and honestly have to say it is the best meatloaf I've had in my life. When I asked the waiter if I should get the meatloaf, he said that if they have meatloaf on the menu, it better be good! And he was right! It was perfect. My boyfriend had the prime rib and he loved each bite. We were also offered desert which was amazing as well! I don't remember the name but I had a peanut butter cake which was delicious and my boyfriend had the sorbet. ATMOSPHERE Dimmed lights, live jazz, nice seating. Tortoise is the epitome of supper clubs from days gone past, done to perfection, from beautiful tufted banquets, to atmosphere, to service and, most importantly, to food. With family all far away, my wife and I ate there last night for their Thanksgiving buffet. What a spread! Bowls full of beautiful oysters, shrimp, tuna, lobster bisque, two carving stations (prime rib and turkey), all the fixings and the most amazing pie assortment for dessert. The place was packed, but I never experienced a better executed buffet. As soon as you finished a plate or got up to return to the food, your used plate and utensils were replaced. A super friendly server took care of drinks and anything else you may have needed. Food was replenished constantly so there was never an empty platter. Although full, the restaurant never felt crowded, as the tables (we had a booth) were well spaced and there is a lot of soft, sound-deadening material around. We had the opportunity to speak to both owners. I was particularly interested in the response of the older of the two when we praised our server. He said they look to hire friendly people. I so strongly believe in that. You can train many server skills, but you can't train "friendly". This is a great place for people who love to eat! read more

I came here for the Thanksgiving special and was not disappointed. I wasn't sure what to expect for a higher priced buffet, but the food and presentation were great. I pretty much just loaded up on the shrimp, prime rib, and turkey/fixings which were really tasty. Our waiter Jeffrey did a great job walking us through the offerings and stopping by just enough to make sure we had what we needed. An intimate place in the heart of the craziness of River North, this was an amazing change of pace for NYE. I chose those place for NYE because of no cover charge and I get spend that money to EATING. There was live jazz for the night with a very humble and personable owner and waiting staff. For appetizers, we got the fried calamari and lobster bisque with a couple salads. The squid were lightly fried to with a robust pepper sauce. The bisque was REAT GOOD. The thick soup with some meat in it had awesome flavor. I love salads that were made in heads of cabbages. So the blue cheese salad had a great crunch because it was a head of cabbage with a strong bleu cheese sauce and bacon bits in it. For the main entree, I got NY strip steaks that was in peppercorn crust. I ordered medium PLUS (if you haven't heard, there is plus and minus in grilling meat now!). It came with a Brussels sprout hash that was honestly flavorful. It had more Brussels sprouts than potatoes that enjoyed. The steak was great but not the best I had in the city. I would come back and try the fish options! They looked great- like the Chilean sea bass! My main issue I had last night was with the valet parking staff - they were incredibly rude and when we came out to get our vehicle, they couldn't find our keys for several minutes, then wouldn't accept card for their valet fee, and when we entered our vehicle, it smelled like giraffe ass in our car (whoever drove the car had really awful B.O.). So we came there for dinner. My husband and I both had the lobster bisque which was just ok. I like my lobster bisque to have some lobster meat in it and this had none in both our cups. I then ordered the oysters Rockefeller and I have to say it was one of the worst oysters Rockefeller I ever had. My husband had the prime rib which is supposed to be rubbed down with Lawrys seasoning. Well I don't know which seasoning they used but to me it was just big, thick and lacked seasoning. The mashed potatoes were good. We also ordered the corn which was not good. Oh and the bread in my opinion is nothing to rave about. Way to cheesy with a combination of crap that did not taste well. The Tortoise pies was good. As for service, our waiter was slow. And at one point I got up to use the bathroom. When I came back, the waitress for the table next to us was blocking me from coming back to my seat. I just stood there and stared at her. No response. I wanted to see how long it would take and after about a minute or two, a bus boy had to come over, tap her shoulder and pointed to me. She was rude. Asked what I wanted. I said I want my seat. She then moved but did not apologize. Not interested in coming back. Food and service was not worth it and for a place that has been around awhile this should be a no brainer. read more

What a gem! Met someone from out of town here for drinks on a Tuesday evening. We were immediately greeted and welcomed and shown to the bar. The atmosphere is great- dimly lit, each room has different color walls, and classy music playing in the background. Would be a great spot for dates! My bf and I had the whiskey sours and our friend had a dry dirty martini. The sours were delicious! And man did they pack a punch- I had two and was definitely feeling it after. Our friend said the martini was classic perfection as well. They had a happy hour deal of 1$ shrimp and oysters that looked delectable but we opted for the calamari appetizer with shishito peppers and a sauce. Man did we devour those- buttery deliciousness and with a balanced bite from the peppers. Would definitely recommend this spot and plan to come back for a special occasion to enjoy a full dinner. Ps. The cocktails we ordered were sub-par at best. Initially, we each chose old fashions. They both looked extremely red in color as if grenadine or some other syrup ingredient was added. Next we ordered a Gibson and a Tito's vodka martini (slightly dirty with onion garnish). The martini arrived extremely dirty with too much vermouth, so we asked the staff to return it and make another one. The second martini arrived, and then we realized that both of our drinks were made with old onion garnishes. They were slightly brown at the ends and tasted rotten ruining the drinks completely. My wife ordered the special, Pheasant Pie. She has eaten wild game her entire life, and she didn't think the meat in the pie was pheasant. She said it was white meat (not dark at all), bland tasting with not a hint of gaminess flavor. I ordered the Sea Scallops, which arrived with only 5 scallops on a bed of risotto, asparagus and artichoke. The flavor was mediocre; however, charging $40 for 5 scallops is robbery. Tried to organize after work drinks with colleagues by calling this place 10 days ahead of time. Was told they don't take reservations at the bar, it's first come first served, but if you come in early you'll be fine. My wife had drinks there a week before the date and inquired again on my behalf. They told her the same thing. I show up early on the chosen date only to find out it's closed for a private event, so I need to find a new place to go on the fly and let everyone else in my party know. Did not expect to find such a great neighborhood place two blocks from Magnificent Mile! Where to start? With the well-crafted cocktails in the intimate clubby bar? The delish $1 oysters at happy hour? The great service over dinner - we never had to ask for our water glasses to be refilled, never had to look around for help? How about the jazz, which was a notch above the usual lounge combo? Yes, all of that and more. The dining rooms were cozy and classy without being stuffy. There seemed to be a lot of regulars and the place had a neighborhood feel, especially in the bar area. The jazz combo played in the bar - we could hear them at our table but it didn't drown out conversation. I liked that fact that the tables were far enough apart that the atmosphere wasn't noisy, even when filled. The famous meatloaf was great. I love good meatloaf - it's harder to find than you think - and I was satisfied. My husband got the whitefish and it was perfectly cooked. The side dish of mushrooms went well with both dishes. If the live jazz, cool space/décor, and impeccable service hadn't already sold me, that Meatloaf would have. It's beyond comprehension. Smoky, luscious, with a great salt crust reminiscent of a great ribeye, and good to the last bite. But I still can't decide if that or the spicy creamy ginger coconut Chilean Sea Bass was my favorite! Coconut rice?! Come on now... Don't skip the Poké appetizer (sesame perfection), and if you dare save room for dessert, the Tortoise namesake is silky chocolate decadence, and the peanut butter pie is an upscale version of one of life's perfect foods. That approach to food seems to be a trend here: there owner said when he was looking for his perfect chef, he made them "audition" with a meatloaf worthy of an upscale menu. Went here for a late lunch today. Had a solid experience - closer to 3.5 stars than 4. Good food at fair prices. Service was relatively average - definitely not bad, but not especially good. Had the steak frites, which were very good. Loved the blue cheese butter and the frites. They also brought me a side of truffle aioli, which was delicious. My friend ordered the French dip, which was solid, and my other friend had the quinoa salad with salmon, which was good and came with a generous portion of salmon (although it was $12). Cocktails were decent as well. Great space though, and easy to get a table. read more
