We shopped at this large and well stocked Foodland every day we were in town. The Produce and salad…read morebar was very fresh and they had an excellent selection of meats, including smoked salmon plus a large variety of dairy and yogurt products including hard to find soy and almond yogurts. The staff were very friendly and twice staff members struck up a conversations with us out of the blue - a nice touch.

I'm a 48 year old man on a cruise stop, buying a 6 pack of beer. I might look a little younger than…read moremy biological age, but no one has mistaken me for a minor in a very long time. With a smile I place the beer on the counter. The woman behind the counter, a short overweight lady I would guess to be in her early to mid-30's just scowls at me, before asking for my ID (it's been a long time since I was carded at all). With a smile I hand her my Canadian Permanent Resident card, issued by the federal government of Canada, whose border is about 30 miles away from where I was standing. She inspects it quizzically before handing it back to me saying "it needs to have an expiration date." Confused, I take the ID back to inspect it, and again cheerfully, I point her to the bottom of the card with the expiration date, and my birthdate directly above it. She again looks it over like she can't really read, hems and haws and acts like maaaybe she is going to ring the order up, but maybe not. Here's where I made a mistake apparently- I jokingly said "my 21st birthday is over 27 years old, what exactly is the issue?" and shrugged, she immediately shoves the ID back at me and says "I'm not going to serve you." Shocked, I ask to speak to the manager, but I notice there is a customer behind me so I ask her to please take care of him first since she had been wasting our time for a couple minutes now. She ignores that and leaves him waiting while she gets the manager. I'm expecting the manager would have half a brain and some sense of customer service unlike the clerk, but the also 30-something manager young enough to be my daughter looks at the ID and says "we're not going to serve you." I should have asked whether she thinks I'm under 21 years of age (preposterous) or that my federally issued Canadian ID is fake (ridiculous), instead I just left empty-handed as she said "we do things differently in Alaska." Yeah, apparently you do.

This is one of Juneau's largest grocery stores, and it's very well stocked. They also have a…read moreseparate section that sells clothing and small appliances, so it's like a supermarket and department store all in one. There's a massive parking lot with plenty of spots, a full-service pharmacy, and an on-site fuel center too. Since this chain is owned by the same one that runs Kroger and Smith's I was excited that I could earn rewards points with my purchase! The store has a big deli and bakery with fresh items, and has all sorts of local and national brands. The prices are on the high side (this is Alaska, after all), but they carry just about everything you could ever need or want. There's even a small section that sells generic Alaska souvenirs if you need to pick up something for the folks back home.

A Well-Stocked Retail Chain with Room for Improvement in Customer Service! This longstanding retail…read morechain is a one-stop shop for everything you might need, from groceries and fresh produce to apparel, furniture, electronics, housewares, and more. Walking into the store, I immediately noticed the clean, well-organized layout, making it easy to navigate through the different sections. The selection is impressive, offering a variety of styles and options, whether you're shopping for clothing, home essentials, or fresh vegetables and meats. One of the biggest conveniences is the ample parking space, so you never have to worry about finding a spot, even during peak hours. Inside, the store also features a pharmacy, appliances, electronics, and plenty of other interesting finds, making it a great place to explore if you're looking for everyday essentials or even a few unexpected deals. While the store itself was clean, well-maintained, and had great promotions, the customer service was unfortunately not up to par. What really stood out was my experience at self-checkout. I expected a quick and smooth process, but the cashier assisting at self-checkout seemed unprepared and overwhelmed. When I asked for help scanning the barcode for my loyalty discount on the app, she didn't seem to know how to find it. Instead of trying to figure it out or asking another employee for assistance, she appeared stressed, nervous, and ultimately didn't make an effort to resolve the issue. She also seemed distracted and wasn't fully listening to my questions, which was quite disappointing. A little more attentiveness and willingness to help would have made a huge difference in the overall experience. Sign Up for Membership. Despite the customer service hiccup, the store does offer great promotions and discounts, but to take advantage of them, you should sign up for the free membership. It's fast and easy to do online by simply downloading the store's app. This will give you access to special deals, reward points, and additional savings at checkout. This store has a lot of potential, with its wide selection, fresh produce, and clean, organized layout. However, they could improve their customer service training, especially at self-checkout, to ensure a smoother experience for shoppers. Would I come back? Yes, for the convenience and selection. But I'd be prepared to navigate checkout on my own if needed.
