I contacted Frigidaire to get an idea of how much it would cost to fix, and they quoted me a $350 flat rate regardless of the issue. Considering my refrigerator cost $900 new, that felt like a lot. I decided to contact Columbine as they seemed to have a good reputation. They couldn't give me a quote over the phone without checking on the fridge (which mades sense to an extent, but I tried to get a range at least - which they would not give me), but would send a tech out. Just to look at things there was a $135 diagnostic fee, that (assuming I ultimately use them) would go toward whatever repair was need. This seemed potentially like a better deal so I scheduled a time for a tech to come out. Well the tech just left, after quoting me close to $900 to repair the refrigerator! $900 is literally the cost of the refrigerator new! He even told me that if there were other issues the cost could go up to $2000! I can't express how frustrated I am at this situation, and how absurdly expensive Columbine is. Had the person on the phone at least given me a range of potential costs I would never have gone with them. Now it's off to Frigidaire. In the end I will be spending close to $500 to fix a refrigerator that only cost $900.

Given I'm knowledgable about mechanical and electrical systems, I had a pretty good idea what needed to be done and knew it shouldn't cost anywhere close to $550. Larry came out 2 days after I called him (it was a hot week and he was busy), he listened to my concerns, he showed me everything that he was doing and why he was doing it. He recharged the system with R-22 refrigerant. He told me up front how much he charged per pound (very reasonable market price). He even taught me some new things about AC systems. All of this for around $150. He has 45 years experience in HVAC and now runs a small business for himself. I found him to be very honest, straight forward, experienced and reasonable prices. I would highly recommend Larry for HVAC work. NOTE: If you call another HVAC company and ask them how much they charge per pound of R-22 refrigerant when recharging AC systems and they won't tell you, hang up and call Larry.

The service vehicle and technician's card were actually for "Eco-Appliance Repair.com" which redirects to the website http://www.ecoappliancerepair.net It turned out the problem was that the unit was installed incorrectly. As there was no actual repair needed, he fixed the install and didn't charge beyond the reservation/arrival fee. He was organized, communicated clearly and acted in a professional manner. I give this business 4/5 stars because I think they could do better than a 3 hour window in a town as small as Lafayette and because there was no serious issue to put him to the test.
