Salads: I loved the variety of salad dressings available! Fruits were sparse. There was only watermelon available. Soups: Clam chowder & pho were delicious! I have lived in Reno for 13 years and I suspect I have eaten at Toucan Charlie's at least 50 times. I have long regarded as the 'to go' place for visitors. Well, not any more. I arrived at 1140. There were maybe six customers in front of me. It took 25 minutes to get seated. There had only one person checking in guests. There were 3-5 hosts waiting to get guests to their tables (I have never seen this before). Okay, let's get to the food. Birria dry and not much taste. Spanish rice was wet. Steamed clams were awful; the liquid was oily and smelled fishy. Ma Po tofu was cold and tasteless. Boiled shrimp were tiny. Orange (?) chicken was a little tough and did not have a lot of flavor. Pho was insipid. (Chinese) beef and mushroom was not tasty The only things up to the prior standard were the Smoked trout Sautéed cod Sesame ball Deserts were as expected. Service by Delphina was excellent as always. Even with 'the Monday locals discount,' the bill came to $82 for two, less tip. Given the drop in food quality, it is overpriced. There used to be buffets all over Reno, now there are only two left. This one, and another hotel/casino in town I had to wait in line a half hour, and it was worth every second of the wait. It was very busy on a Monday. I don't know if it was because it was the first day of hot August nights or not, but there was quite a bit of a line. I got up into the line, paid, and went inside..... What a spread! Mexican, Chinese, American, a station where they would make a salad for you, pho, Mongolian BBQ, a Carvery station with all kinds of different choices, including ham, prime, rib, and even sausage. They had a dessert section, including cobbler, bread, pudding, cakes, cookies, pie, large selection of gelato, even cotton candy! They also had a selection of sugar-free desserts. Everything that I ate was amazing. Some of the things, The shrimp were fresh, the Mexican choices were good, I loved the dim sum, and I had both prime rib and some of the sausage. They had both salmon, and trout, and both of those were amazing as well. For dessert, I had a rocky Road gelato, (very creamy with lots of goodies inside...) the cobbler and the bread, pudding. the bread pudding was just the right consistency and delicious, the cobbler was nice and warm. Went on a Sunday. Waited in line for 20ish minutes to get checked in then seated. Service is good and polite. Not fast, but good. I ran out of water twice. They had very little fresh fruit to choose from. They had cantaloupe, pineapple, oranges, and apples but the apples and oranges you had to peel and cut yourself. Stay away from the Mac N cheese. Looks great, but Kraft Mac N cheese has more flavor. Tried the steak, it had flavor but it was tough. All the seafood had flavor but was overcooked so it was dried out. The crawfish were the only seafood that was not over cooked. The dessert bar was ok. I had a brownie and 3 different Gelatos. Vanilla, coffee and chocolate. All of those were good. It has been several years since I have been to the Tucan Charlie's buffet. I would rate the food a 4 star and the service a one star. As far as the food goes, the selection isn't as quite as good as it used to be, but still pretty good and a lot of value. I always like the Asian wok option and the meat station where you can get prime rib. I also like the gelato option for desert but I miss the banana cream pie. As far as the service there were two different interactions that made me feel this way. The first was at the Asian wok station I asked when the meat options were, and instead of giving me the 3 options, the lady pointed to a sign that was not close enough to read where I was standing. Our server also ignored both me and my wife when we asked if we could get a drink refill on two separate occasions. We got lucky and scored one free adult meal since someone had a free voucher that was given to the next customer, which happened to be us! I was blown away and slightly overwhelmed by how big this buffet was. There were so many options and different cuisines to choose from! We tried a bit from each station and the food was decent but one complaint I would have is that everything was really salty. One place that stood out to me was the pho station. I had no expectations and didn't think it would be as authentic as Vietnamese restaurants. However, it was pretty legit in my opinion! It had a good flavored beef broth. Came here for the seafood buffet, it's not offered daily and it's considerably more expensive and there isn't earning any free seafood buffet so you're getting taxed All Round. Time tax: Unless you are rolling with someone in a higher tier of the players club you are going to wait. Sad but true, Maybe I was at fault for arriving as late as I did around 7:20pm but I wasn't sat until closer to 8:30. The line was peculiar. So many people skipped ahead. There was only one person at the register. Occasionally the nice blonde manager lady would come over and ring a few parties up, the line went fast for a few seconds, but the chap at the register only worked fast when the manager came by. Otherwise he took his sweet time, he'd only rush if another VIP waiting to skip the line showed up. It was often, this buffet is popular and the skippers show up in force, especially late. Server Attention Tax: the servers on a normal day work hard, they close at 9:00, they warn you when 9 approaches and it's a wrap, on the seafood buffet days they are not motivated, because they stay late. They act like they aren't getting paid for the extra time. I sat down around 8:25 and no one took my drink order till like 8:40. I was worried I would get a single plate but to my surprise they didn't shut down shop right at 9:00 in fact they were still seating people. So that was cool. But the servers are in no rush. I don't want to get all Mr. Rogers about it, but if you get me my beverages sooner, I'll get out of your hair sooner, you are literally prolonging your own suffering here. The seafood Tax Rebate: the seafood is good, fresh fish, crab legs and all the regular sides. Crab is offered seasoned crab boil style or plain steamed, make sure to wander around. Overall: I love to eat good, I'm not crazy about flights, hotels or hardware stores because I don't think value necessarily is affected by where you go. (There are a few exceptions) I think service flavors cuisine, Here the service isn't adding a respectively great flavor. Sure if you spend a lot of money here you should get some priority but even Vegas doesn't forget about the little guy. I felt sorry for the people with kids in the line. Every time I come to Reno, this is like a must stat for me. I go to their champagne brunch, Saturday and Sunday mornings and yes, it is a little pricey, but it's so worth it for all of the items that you get unlimited crab legs, muscles clams you get homemade pasta still get breakfast items like it the works. I took my friend this time and she was really pleased. At first she was upset with the pricing, but she was really pleased with the variety of food. We had the unlimited champagne and mimosas that kept coming our way the great customer service. I cannot remember our waiter's name, but he stayed on it filling up our drinks. When we arrived at the restaurant; there weren't that many people in queue but once we walked in to the restaurant, there was a large group (a girls basketball team) dining in the back corner plus a cluster of little groups all throughout the back part of the restaurant. My wife and I visited Toucan Charlie's Buffet at Atlantis Casino on Saturday, the Fourth of July, and had a mixed experience. Knowing it would be a busy holiday, we arrived "early" and joined the line at 4:12 PM. The buffet opened at 4:30 PM, and the line began moving as expected. However, after about 30 minutes, progress slowed to a crawl. By around 6:30 PM, we were finally near the entrance, only to discover there were two additional priority lines for Sapphire and Diamond Monarch Rewards members. We eventually reached the cashier at approximately 7:15 PM - more than three hours after getting in line. The holiday buffet was priced at $65.99 per person, plus tax. Once inside, the experience improved considerably. We were escorted to a spacious, comfortable booth, and the buffet itself offered an impressive variety of cuisines, including Japanese, Korean, Indian, Mexican, and many other international selections. As for the food, it was a mixed bag. Several dishes were excellent - fresh, flavorful, and expertly prepared. Unfortunately, other items were disappointing, arriving lukewarm or cold when they should have been hot and freshly served. The inconsistency kept the overall dining experience from living up to its premium price. One area that truly stood out was the dessert selection. The variety was impressive, and the quality exceeded our expectations, providing a sweet ending to the meal. If you're planning to visit, I strongly recommend making a reservation through OpenTable to avoid the extremely long wait, especially during holidays and weekends. It's also worth joining the Monarch Rewards program if you dine here regularly, as members receive discounted buffet pricing (for example, weekday lunches are significantly less expensive for members). As we left the restaurant, we found ourselves with mixed feelings. Stepping outside, we were surprised to see that the line was still just as long as when we had arrived. It's been 5 years since we've been back to this plentiful and excellent buffet. It's located inside the Atlantis Casino, there are massive parking lots which are full every time we came. The price now is $66, but there are many ethnic food stations, seafood, salad bar, desserts, everything you can think of, except lobster tails or lobsters. The service is excellent, the plates are moved as soon as they're done. The line was long on New Year day. I love the fresh oysters and shooters. The snow crabs are sweet and tasty with melted butter. The Chinese salt and pepper prawns are big and better than many restaurants out there. Lobster ravioli is very nice, a little rich for my wife but great for me. I found the gumbo at the Mexican station extremely delicious. The tacos are great too. The rare prime rib is a little chewy for me. I took my time and sampled many different dishes and I love them. They're all great. The clam chowder a little watery but I liked it. We lined up around 4 PM for the buffet which opened about 4:30 PM. By around 5:30 we made it to prepay, and after this we got a receipt. Once you get the receipt you can come back at any time to be seated. So we came back around 6pm to be seated as some members of our party wanted to do some other activities before eating. The food was amazing. I loved the lobster ravioli and lobster stuffed mushroom. The roast duck and ahi poke were also standout options. I also enjoyed the shrimp ceviche, taco bar, lox bagel, and shrimp skewer!! The brisket and crabcake were not that good though -- brisket was flavorless and not very smoky, though it was fatty, and the crabcake was weirdly sweet. Dessert is where Toucan Charlie's shines: the coconut macaron and creme brulee were sooo good (i was very impressed by the creme brulee as the surface was still hard and bruleed!). The chocolate cake was also great, but I found the cheesecake had a bit of a strange off texture as if it was frozen. I also highly recommend the small fruit tart!! There was a variety of food to try. It all looked good. I made sure to get small servings of what looked good to me. The dessert bar was nice and had a variety. To my chagrin none of the South Lake Tahoe casinos have buffets anymore. Toucan is the only option in the area so we made the hour drive. It was what I expected. It's Vegas style buffet 30 years ago. Everything was okay. My favorite was the pork belly. The prime rib was all medium and not the most tender. The shrimp scampi were small. Service was nice and a few of the staff at the stations were a little grumpy. Overall a good option if you had buffet set in your mind, like we did. read more

Our basketball team was in town for tournament. Our fun coordinator made reservation for 31 at 6:30pm on Saturday night. So glad he did. Line to get in wrapped around the restaurant. Khalid was our server. He did an amazing job getting our drink orders as soon as we were seated. Some of the favorites tonight were snow crab legs, prime rib, lamb chops, oysters, pho, crème brûlée, and gelato. Place was packed.
