The bathrooms at Common Kitchen are definitely kid friendly. I was able to use the changing table in the stall for my toddler without any issues. I also appreciate the cleanliness in the bathrooms at the tables. Many food halls look trashed and this place is well maintained. Overall this business is ideal for my husband and I taking my active toddler out to eat. I liked that she had freedom to move around as needed without being in the way of other customers. The real standout for me was the Haitian pâtés: flaky, flavorful, and worth ordering more than one. I tried the codfish which was way too salty but had a nice kick, and the oxtails. Wish they had the chicken and beef available to try. The only miss for us was the Vietnamese spot, which was a little underwhelming compared to the rest--fine, but the simple things I ordered just didn't land for us. Will definitely try another visit to check out the bar and different vendors who weren't open today. I also reviewed a location that used to be in Clarendon, Arlington, VA in September 2012, which was a 3-star. Today, there are 4 locations: 3 in VA (the original in Alexandria I've been to) & 2 I haven't as well as the only location in MD, which I have been to their Rockville location on Sunday, October 26, 2025. My girlfriend's parents love Hard Times Cafe. They used to go to the one in College Park, but it closed so they occasionally will drive much further for them to Rockville. My g/f & I were in Gaithersburg that afternoon, and her parents mentioned inviting us to dinner at Hard Times, which we agreed. It had been a while since I had been there and got samplings of the various chili. I thought I liked their signature Cincinnati chili the best, but I think I realized I liked the Texas even more. Terlingua chili was great too. I got a beer, which was good too. Service was friendly & prompt. I got a chili dog with Texas chili & fries, which were great. We also split chili nachos, which were good too. Hard Times Cafe isn't necessarily a place I'll go out of my way for, but it's a place I enjoy when it works out.

I always get it with jalapeños and onions, and get a serving of beans on the side. (Not in the chili. My momma raised me right). Served with a soft and sweet piece of cornbread it's a tasty, quick, and inexpensive meal. Hard Times opened - and closed - a shop in my hometown a few years back, and I don't get down the road as often as I used to. Today's meal gives me incentive to make the trip more often in the future.

They had two dessert options, one lentil based pudding and another rice pudding. The service was great, tables were actively being cleaned and reset, and the interior felt clean and comfortable. The buffet was $24, which seemed pricier than expected, but I don't do lunch buffets that often anymore so perhaps this is on par with other comparable places.

If you are going for lunch buffet, wait until after 12:15pm to show up. They advertise their lunch buffet as starting at 11:30am. We showed up at 11:50am. She told us in person it would be ready at 12pm (there was at that moment nothing on the buffet at all). She told us to sit down and wait. We contemplated going elsewhere but decided to give them a chance. 2. Water comes in plastic bottles. When she told us to sit down and wait for the buffet, she brought two bottles of water to the table. Then she went back to setting up the buffet. 3. They have zero sense of urgency. As our tummies growled louder and louder, she was in zero rush at all to set up the buffet. I never witnessed anyone so nonplused about hungry diners in her dining room in all my life. If I were to compare her motions with that of a sloth or molasses, I would not be exaggerating. The buffet was finally ready at 12:15pm. 4. The food was okay. There were two "wow" items, a few lukewarm items, and several okay items on the buffet. We definitely got our money's worth, but if we had it to do over again, we would drive 20min to India Palace in Germantown instead of the 5min it took to drive here. 5. Payment procedure is weird. They have a sign on the door saying they prefer tap to pay. She would not allow tap to pay. She insisted on me handing her my physical card so that she could put it into the machine. I did not even get to see the screen while she was tapping on it after inserting my card. As far as I know, I was charged appropriately, but it would have been nice to at least see the screen. As she handed me a receipt to sign, she pointed below where my signature was to go to where the suggested tip amounts were. I tend to be a generous tipper, but I found myself filled with the "what am I tipping for" thoughts you see people express on social media all the time. She did not serve us other than bringing bottled water to our table after telling us to go sit. 6. Don't even hope to get to use the bathroom. While we were there, there was an employee in the locked bathroom washing his/her/their hands over and over and over and over again. It had to be an employee, because there were only five customers in the restaurant, and all five of us were accounted for as we waited for the bathroom we finally gave up on ever hoping to be able to use. 7. No music. Instead of music, they have a loud TV playing some girl's youtube videos with tips for teenagers.
