I hate to be the one who "firsts" Fleming, given how many other people have reviewed it under Harding's banner, but Fleming deserves its own review. I got out and played Fleming for the first time today, and it is a wonderful 9-hole course for fine-tuning your game. The course plays par 30 - so there are six par 3 holes and three par 4's. Think of it as a mini-Harding. Fleming plays on the interior of Harding's back 9 - and if you've ever played Harding you've at least seen some of the yellow flags marking Fleming's layout. The holes vary in length from easy to reach par 3s of 130 yards to "hit & hope" 235 yard par 3's. The par 4 holes are fair tests of golf, varying from 400 to 450 yards from the white tees, when they are moved back. I walked on at noon on a Wednesday. The pro shop staff were extremely courteous (I love those guys at Harding, really I do), got me processed and out the door in less than two minutes. The course itself was near-empty. I saw a few groups ahead of me, but never caught them. I had the green light to hit when ready for the entire round. I played 9 holes in under 90 minutes. Alone. With a lot of the same views you get while playing Harding and (this is the important part) the same condition fairways & greens. The greens at Fleming are in great shape, better than Lincoln, GGP, Sharp or Glen Eagles. In fact, the only muni in town with greens close to or better than Fleming's are...Harding! Fleming has all of the same amenities as Harding: clubhouse, range, practice greens, etc. It is the best "executive course" in the city, and my new found home for quick rounds. Played here yesterday afternoon for $25 and was one of about 10 people on the entire course. I think it might be the world's best/toughest par 30. I'm about a 5 handicap, medium length. Here is a brief hole-by-hole just so you can get a flavor of it: 1) Longish par four that narrows near the green. I hit Driver, 6-iron. 2) Par three, 9-iron. Overhanging Cypress trees make the tee shot scarier than you'd think. 3) Par three, 8-iron. Ditto overhanging Cypresses. 4) Par three, 6-iron. Had to play a cut because of crosswinds and Cypresses. 5) Par three, 3-wood. Yes, 3-wood. 6) Par three, 3-wood. Again 3-wood. 7) Long par four, Driver, 5-wood. 8) Short par four, Driver, pitch. The only "easy" hole on this nine. 9) Par three, 7-iron. Had to play a draw because of overhanging Cypresses. So that's two nasty par-fours, one easy par-four, two very nasty (200+ yards) par-threes, and the rest medium/hard par threes. It's in the SAME condition as the big course. Relative to par, I think it's much more difficult than the front nine on the big course... maybe the same difficulty as the back nine. Don't miss it. read more

TPC Harding Park is an absolute gem of a course to play golf. It's hands down my favorite course to play in the Bay. Location: The course is located just south of the City, so it's a great place for both tourists and locals. I live in the south Bay, so it takes me a while to get up there, but in my opinion, it's worth it. Also, I obviously don't have to go clear into the city. Clubhouse: The clubhouse is very nice; at the higher end of clubhouses around. The restaurant is good for a bite, they have free WiFi, and the pro shop is stocked with good merchandise if you need to take a TPC Harding Park souvenir home. Prices are okay for a TPC clubhouse...felt about on par. Driving Range: The range leaves something to be desired, but I think the course itself makes up for it and then some. The range is mats, it's small, and it's not very deep. I would probably just plan on hitting a small bucket of irons before your round, but hey you do what you gotta do. Course: The course is spectacular. It's layout is really built for walking. Let me be clear that I much prefer, and almost always do, ride versus walk. However, the course layout, and the fact that it's cart path only, kind of makes your understand why the majority of folks walk. There are definitely carts available, and if someone like my dad comes to play, we definitely grab a car. In general, though, if you've thought it might be fun to walk a course, this is the one. The fairways and greens are beautiful, and the scenery is so good. Price: Harding Park is definitely not cheap, but it's also a pretty good deal for being just south of the City and in the Bay Area as a TPC course. Plus, to give you an idea of how good the course is, the US Open and President's Cup are being played there in the coming years. That's just sick nasty. I typically get there for twilight as it's a bit more affordable, and I get another break being a Bay Area County resident. The SF city residents get the prime price reduction...lucky dogs! If you are looking for a 9 hole golf course that feels like simply 1/2 of an 18 hole course--this is not your course. Go to Gleneagles and prepare to be frustrated because Gleneagles is just down right tricky. Fleming is not that tricky. But it is no walk in the park either--for that go to the park, literally, and check out Golden Gate park's 9 hole course. Fleming is very well kept up, the holes are not too difficult and not too easy, and there are a few par 4's that are decently long and allow use of woods and long irons. I played this morning for the first time and truly enjoyed myself. The location in gorgeous as it is set in the middle of the 18 hole course at Harding park, right on lake merced. Good golfing in the city. Can't beat that. ****Update**** Have now become a somewhat-regular at Fleming. I love it more every time I play. The upkeep is killer and for a 9 holer it is hard to beat. The course is mediocre at best and not worth the high prices charged to out of towners and even Bay Area residents. The cypress trees are dying and being removed and with them the picturesque scene you would get from playing there. Much better experiences and deals are found elsewhere outside of the city (Eagle vines, Wente Vineyards, Half Moon Bay, etc). The newly redone greens are still slow for a TPC course (even Jim Furyk told me they were very slow during the WGC match play). Cart path only leads to most players walking and thus prolonged playing times (5+ hours). Even city residents have to purchase an additional golf card for $90 to get the resident rate. Compound these problems with a verrrrrryyyyshitty pro shop manager (rude and unrelenting to reservation problems (ie. see comments by others about pro shop employees)) adds to the reason why the sport of golf is dying. this is someone who use to play the old harding back in the early 2000s and 90s.. First if you have a resident card it saves you half the cost.. you pay 46 compared to 90 or 100plus.. Course9 :Very wide open .. Cypress trees surround the course.. There are all sorts of holes out here.. Not that many blind shots. Length: 9 Most the holes from the whites are over 350 yards. The par 3's take a 6 iron or up... number 10 is a easy 2 shot hole for the pros but a 3 shot par 3 for the average golfer.. Holes:8 : Some of my favorite is the 4th hole dogleg right par five.. 3 shot hole into a well protected green.. I like hole 7 a short par 4 but I sill always mange to double bogy because its well guarded by bunkers and has elevated green. Number 9 is fun.. a straight par 5... Background 9 is designed on the outter part of the course and lake merced. Number 11 is a average par 3 that you aim at SFSU building. Hole 12 is famous for all the golf balls on the fence that are stuck because of people who have that power fade. Hole 14 is a pretty hole.. Now hole 18 OMG is long.... Your drive is over a part of the lake.. But the second shot is to an elevated green that use to be the old putting green. So for me its like driver, 3 wood, and wedge.. Bunker: 10 .. Hit in the bunkers is like sitting on Carmel Beaches.. Fairways: 9 super nice except when its fogy Service: 9... you can book ahead .. or show up. Actually one time I ordered lunch but had to tee off. They brought me my food and didnt charge me. nice people. The price keeps it from being 5 star. I think non-resident during week is about $120. Type of place to play couple times a year. One of the great walking courses. Played yesterday. Penile rough. Yes, I said penile. Rewards hitting clearly defined fairways. Straight ahead golf, no blind shots. Lots of fun. Oddly, has a lot of dogleft left holes so be ready to work your drives or go 3-wood off the tee. Front gets a little repetitive with 380 and 400 yard up and back holes to slightly elevated greens. Back provides more challenge and elevation change. Surprised slope from the 6400 white tees only 121. It was hard to hit good shots out of the rough, whereas lesser Bay Area courses you always have a shot. HInt: don't try to hit fairway woods from the rough here--just choke down on your irons and rip it out. Last hole one of the great finishing ones in Northern California. Restaurant is nice, range is okay. Staff somewhat helpful. Challenging track, just pricey. read more

**Disclaimer: I've only tried the driving range. It is not a real lawn. So, be sure to bring a lot of tees if you are hitting the driver. I want to give this course 5 stars but I can't because of the gun range across the lake. Constant shots being fired during the entire round... I know its not Hardings fault, but definitely got annoying after a while. Besides that, Harding is GREAT. Easy to walk, course is well taken care of, and the club house is pretty nice too. A course that is sneaky tough, subtly beautiful and generally in good shape. Sometimes the greens can be a little iffy. One complaint as an out-of-towner is they keep raising the rates ($160 is a little steep, this is a nice course but not quite worth that rate in my opinion). However, it's always cool to play where the pros have -- if for nothing else than to realize how much better they are than the rest of us. Fleming course: Not bad for beginners like me. Definitely a good 9-hole test for anyone beginning the game to see how he/she will fare against a decent course. From the men's tee, there are 3 par-4's ranged in the 260-425yds (two of them are difficult dogleg left), 3 long par-3's in the 190-235yds, and the rest are short par-3's 140-165yds that will test your ball placement skills (avoiding trees and greenside bunkers). The place is well kept for a public course that sees a good amount of players. Greens aren't bad either. Be sure to look for the sprinkler head yardage markers or bring a Skycaddie. Just like others have said, there is hardly a wait typically on the first tee, although play can get really slow (2+ hrs) when you catch up to the groups in front of you. Went there on a Saturday afternoon around 4:30pm and had to wait for two foursomes off Hole 5 235yds par 3. $30 green fee on weekends ($22 with SF resident card). They have a nice range with about 25 stalls at $5 for 50 balls, but it can get really crowded especially during weekends. read more

A challenging, interesting course that needs some TLC and better management. The conditions as of now are miserable for what they charge (especially for out-of -SF players.) We played it yesterday, and specifically asked in the pro shop if there was anything we should know. They should have mentioned that the 7th fairway was closed, so it was playing as a 150 yard par 3 from a temporary tee. It might have been good to know that there were 6' diameter holes dug in the fairways of a few holes (helpfully marked with orange traffic cones!) Saying that "it's a little wet out there in spots" means you're going to lose properly struck balls--in the fairway--to plugged/buried lies. Or that the greens were a mixed bag of bent, poa, bare spots and bumps that never acted the same from one green to the next. Or that they haven't mowed anything in a week. Or that the practice green was closed--at 10AM on a non-rainy day. WHY? The sound of gunfire from a nearby shooting range can be a distraction as well. Maybe I'll try again after the Schwab Cup; it seems like they put on a good show when they know company is coming. read more

Harding Park is a fabulous SF golf course.. with a resident card, it's a great deal too... I mean, $40 for a PGA quality course is hard to beat.. The Amex Championship will play here in October.. Since they lengthened it out a few years ago, the course is in great shape and now drains pretty well... The course is challenging and really fun to play -- Not every hole warrants hitting driver off the tee, and some interesting doglegs make playing at Harding an enjoyable thinking game. I was lucky enough to sneak out here at Harding Park with not long ago, and enjoy a pleasant if chilly and socked-in summer morning round with an old friend and a couple of his unsuspecting colleagues. In getting out early, the pace of play was good, unlike memories past of 5 and a half hour death marches here on weekend afternoons trying to race the sundown. This course is a really enjoyable walking course with a challenging but fair layout. We played from the blue tees at which the course plays over 6700 yards. That means even good drives leave long irons to the greens, and if you are not striping it off the tee, expect a lot of hacking out of the rough. If you're not a San Francisco resident card holder, find someone who is and have them call a week in advance to set you up with a tee time. UPDATE: USING A CART WITH "CARTPATH ONLY" RULES ADDS 1/2 HOUR TO A ROUND OF GOLF. IT'S A FACT. FACTOR IN THE EXTRA TIME AS WELL FOR ALL THE VISITORS PLAYING THE COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THE 1/2 HOUR STRETCHES EVEN LONGER! What a great layout! And you play the same grounds as golf's current greatest pro's play (Amex, Presidents Cup, etc). With a residents card it's a steal Without the card it's a "play it once in awhile when you can afford it". Harding Park - can I suggest something? I know the visitors pay a premium and a cart is included, but with the Cart Path Only rule in effect it's much better for them to take a Pull-Cart. All too often I get paired up with visitors who take the cart only to wait forever for them to walk all the way across the fairway to only have to walk back because they have the wrong club. It's a flat course and 99% of the visitors can handle the walk and everyone will have a much more enjoyable experience. read more

Wow, what a day that was. It's one of these days I'll never forget in my life, getting a chance to play at this course that is an TPC course. A golfer's dream. TPC is The Players' Championships where PGA tour players compete on. My mentor and I played at this course one WEEK before the Champion Tour event, which Fred Couples would win. I could see yard crewsmen working on the course and even one guy stopped sprinkling water and stood aside as I was working my ball that lie near the sand bunker. I got a little lucky getting a tee's time here as I took Friday off and treated my mentor because he was the one who got me started on the game of golf when I was young. It would be our first time playing here. I got off to a bad start as I made a bogey on the first hole, then a double bogey on the next hole because my ball got into a sand bunker and my ball hit the edge of the bunker and stayed in the bunker again! I was pissed, but was able to settle down and started to make par, a birdie, and ended up with a decent score, which was 82. It's a classic course with lots of cypress trees, fairways kept clean and nice, and as you progress along, the last 5 holes are close to the water, so you will have to keep your swing in check. I did and did not lose a single ball. Will try to play again! read more

I've played this course dozens of times, both before and since the acquisition by TPC, and I have to say, it continues to amaze me. My most recent visit this past Monday (Memorial Day) only served the solidify that opinion. The course is beautiful and well-kept, and the greens and bunkers have been vastly improved by the recent restoration. The bunkers are now full of pristine, fine, white sand (compared to the inconsistent, clumpier sand in the old ones), and their lips are much cleaner and not collapsed like so many of the old ones were. The greens, while somewhat slow due to how recently they opened, roll true, and again, are much more consistent than their poa annua infected predecessors (let's hope that doesn't happen again!). I was reminded of Harding's natural beauty when I played on Monday. The back nine truly is a treat, meandering around the inner front nine and showcasing beautiful views of San Francisco, The Olympic Club, and Lake Merced as you progress through it. The course is forgiving for those who spray it, making it (unfortunately) somewhat of a hacker's paradise, but it is by no means easy. Both birdies and lost balls are few and far between; the length and subtleties of the course make up for its forgiving nature. The course culminates with arguably one of the best 18th holes in golf: a long, dogleg left par-4 with Lake Merced on the left and bunkers to the right. A draw isn't necessary to hit the fairway, but shaping one around the corner makes the hole significantly easier. The green is tiered and domed, with bunkers swallowing shots to the left, and gives me fits each time I play the hole, but it doesn't mean I love it any less. It's a perfect finish to a great course, and a challenge I always look forward to. The Cypress Grill is great, too. The waiters and waitresses are nice, and the food is solid. I always order the chili, which is delicious. Most of the people in the Pro Shop are polite and helpful, and will try and help you when they can. It's also very organized. If you have a tee time, you'll almost always get out on time, and if you don't, you will either be given a time, or asked for your phone number, put on a wait list, and called when there is a time available, which is great. A few cons: first, it can be pricey. I was lucky enough to have been able to get the junior rate for many years, which was $15 M-F and $21 on weekends and holidays. That was a deal! Now that I am no longer a junior, the rates have jumped, but that's a theme for most courses. Harding is especially expensive if you're not from the Bay Area/SF. Another con is the range. It was recently outfitted with new mats, but I liken that to trying to fix a bullet wound with a band-aid; it's just not going to work. For the money you're paying, Harding should have a grass range. The chipping and putting greens are good, however, so that's a bonus. Overall, Harding is a great course and experience. If you're from out of town and have the money to spend, do it. You won't regret it. read more

It's a wonderful course but, it would be nice to be able to get a tee time before noon. It seems like all the best tee times are given to "regulars". Even with my resident card green fees are still a bit pricey for my taste. If you enjoy Harding then I suggest you try Blue Rock Springs(Vallejo). I've been to Harding twice, once to play and the other to watch Tiger win a tournament. It is a great muni course, so great that the PGA has used it twice for tournaments in the last four years. When I played here, I was shocked to see such a low course rating and slope. I played the tips to give myself a chance for a good differential, and that was a huge mistake. The trees absolutely feasted on my balls. I played poorly, the course ate me up, I got discouraged... I moved up to the white tees by about the 8th hole because I needed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. My game was dying. A great place to play, totally disregard the CR and Slope because they are bogus. Don't get all macho and move to the blues. I'm proud to call Fleming my home course. It's well maintained, picturesque and players are friendly. Even the food at the clubhouse is good. Being flat and wide, the course's biggest challenge is...trees! The cypress branches extend over the fairways clipping shots short and returning balls in every direction. I can't remember a round without someone in our group hitting a tree. A cypress gobbled up my husband's ball once - here are your options if it happens to you: 1. Climb in to tree and play the ball - unlikely with these cypresses 2. If you can see the ball from the ground, take a drop with penalty stroke 3. If you can't see the ball at all play lost ball rules The only negative thing about Fleming is that there are a lot of really slow beginners. A little slow play on nine holes is expected but the last time we played in the afternoon a foursome took almost 40 minutes to play each hole. It looked like one person was giving everyone lessons on the course and they even let three groups play through. Since then, we only play first thing in the morning so we can get off the course in two hours. As a bonus, the driving range isn't active at that hour either. Lesson learned! read more

What a way to end the day after a golf game at Harding. For one thing, it is hard to get tee time there and this is our first time back since renovation. When we went to check in, we noticed the Happy Hour sign for the Clubhouse. They had hamburger and fries for $5.00 and they had some alcohol beverages for $3.00, such a Margarita, Bloody Mary, and beer. We decided to give it a try after our game. We all ordered the hamburger and fries. The hamburger was delicious. It is simple, but delicious...a half pound patty, lettuce and tomato on a sesame bun. The fries were the best to me...thin fries, really crispy, not burnt and not oily. We all agreed that this was the best hamburger we have had in a long time. As for the drinks, I wanted a blended Margarita, but they only had it on the rocks. I passed on this but my friend ordered one. I normally like my Margaritas blended, but upon taking a sip from my friend, it was quite delicious. I had to order one for myself. Not only is the food great, so is the atmosphere. The clubhouse is surrounded by glass windows where one can sit by the window and look out at the 18th hole, at the lake or watch the sunset. Or, if you are a sports enthusiast, there are two flat screen TVs with different games going on. This place is great for families also. When we were there, there was a family of 8 having a great time and enjoying their meals. I would definitely go back. read more

Best Public Course in The City hands down. Only Glen Eagles is tougher. The conditions are always perfect. Oh yeah the PGA plays here too. Get a residents card or its $110+ to play with cart $92 to walk I think. Some of the players and most of the staff here are pretentious as hell but at the price you gotta kind of expect it. I'm a Hacker so maybe that's why they're on my ass but I paid too so F@*k You guys relax you'll live longer, Golf is still a game and meant to be fun. This is a 4-star track and a 6-star value with a resident card. Playing a course of even remotely equivalent quality during peak times for $60 is unheard of in the bay area. Every once in a while some minor problem reminds you that it's a muni -- the sand has become pretty hardpacked and the rakes are terrible, for instance -- but at such a low cost it's easy to ignore. And for AP, the 1-star whiner below-- Golf is NOT a 'game of privilege.' Harding is a public course that has no income, race, gender, orientation, or skill requirements. Instead of getting fucked up one of these coming Saturdays, go to bed, get up early on Sunday, buy a set of clubs for $20 at a yard sale, and play the Fleming course for another $20. You'll have fun, meet new friends, enjoy the outdoors, be introduced to a challenging and rewarding pastime, and get some exercise for less than the cost of one night at a bar. read more

As an SF Resident I delight in the resident discount. Courses are maintained nicely, carts are always available and golfers are generally friendly and we've had numerous occasions of golfers joining our game, which add to the enjoyment. The clubhouse also has a great view and make for an entertaining lunch or quick stop for a drink. The staff are also very friendly and spend the time to get to know you by name. Beautiful executive 9-hole course at Harding. First time here and I was impressed by how well the fairway and greens were maintained. Came on a perfect Saturday afternoon (I know in this location it's often hit or miss). There are no tee times (just walk-ons). That can result in a backup on the first tee but people are patient and once we teed off, we were nicely spread that there was no wait on the subsequent holes. Yes, a little pricey for a 9-hole ($31; $23 with a resident card), but a great option for SF (especially in comparison to some of the other public courses in the city). read more

I haven't played the course yet but I've gone to the driving range and practiced chipping and putting a number of times. What a great course in a beautiful setting with Cypress Trees all around you and a little pond. It feels like you're in Monterrey but you're in the middle of the City. The Clubhouse has great views of the 18th hole and it's standard fare, nothing outrageously great but solid burgers, beers, breakfast but wouldn't go just for the food. read more

This is one of my favorite Bay Area golf courses. Since the redesign, it's gone from an OK public course to a world class gem. The views are outstanding, and the course is well maintained. This is a course to walk since it's relatively flat (don't bother with a cart unless you need one, since carts generally are not allowed on the fairways - not even 90 degrees). If you're a San Francisco resident with a Resident's Card, Harding Park is the best deal around ($48 dollars on the weekends compared to $138 for non-residents). If you're a San Francisco resident without a card, stop reading this review and go get one now! It's hard to get a good advanced tee time via the phone system one week ahead of time, but if you're willing to spend an extra $10 you can get a tee time a month in advance. Played here 2 weeks after the WGC match play when pricing was still a little higher (due to better course conditions?) The course is a fun track and can be a test from the blue tees but what was most disappointing were the greens which were smooth but slower than molasses and had a lot of pitch marks that had not been replaced. Fairways were good, rough was punitive but not impossible and a couple of bunkers could have stood a little more sand in them. Overall the course is fun to play and as mentioned before a pretty good test for all levels of golfer. read more

(agree with Mike G. about the vicious doglegs). Hole 7 is a 425 yd. Par 4 Didn't have to wait for a tee time. Excellent staff in clubhouse and course (I didn't feel that they treated us any less for playing on Fleming Course instead of Harding). Just an update as I just finished another round on this great course. I'm not sure if it was the slightly drier conditions or the attention the course is getting from the PGA staffed greens keeping crew but I was surprised at how much better the course is looking and playing from a mere few weeks ago. So here's the updates. Morning round, approx. 60 degree weather with clouds overhead. Tee Box: same report as before. Flat and firm. Fairways: Firm, cut tight, rolling fast. Noticed that they sand the fairways now on most of the holes. Bunkers: Fluffy sand now. Not the sandbox sand that feels like you're hitting into pebbles. Rough: You can actually see the difference btwn the first cut and second cut now. Greens: Holy fireball Batman! The greens were fast! I'd guess that they were somewhere btwn 9-10 on the stimp meter. I was totally surprised on the first green b/c I had putted like I would normally putt and it flew past the hole! My only complaint...and it has nothing to with the course itself, was when I was at the range...there was a guy walking around with one club in his hand and he kept hovering around the range. I finally figured out that he was like those people who hover around waiting for you to get off of a slot machine. he was watching me and waiting to see if I was going to leave balls behind so he could hit them. Talk about getting on your nerves and ruining your time for your pre-round warm up! =) read more

On those rare days in the city where the sunshine exists not only in the Mission but also reaches the often dismal western reaches like the Sunset and environs, I find myself wondering if I have time to drop whatever I'm doing and run out to Harding for a round. Harding is a spectacular course. Having only lived here for 2 years, I've never played it prior to renovation, but I have to say that Harding park compares favorably with my hometown local muni course, Torrey Pines. With a resident card, the fees are beyond reasonable, the 18-hole main course is both challenging and beautiful (the 18th hole in particular just gives me fits as every single time I've played it I've either hooked my drive into the lake, or sliced it to the right, leaving me some gazillion yards to the green). The 9-hole Flemming is very good for what it is. Overall, Harding is not quite as challenging as Torrey Pines South, but maybe one thing they do better at harding is stagger the tee times further apart so there is less time spent waiting for the group ahead. Getting a reservation is not too difficult if you use the phone tee time reservation system a week in advance. read more

Enjoyable course in great condition since the reconstruction for the Amex WGC Championship. The greens are in great shape as are the majority of fairways. Of all the City of SF owned courses, this is by far the nicest. Not the best of tracks for beginners. Holes like #18 can quickly become frustrating for high handicappers. I do not live in the city and thus do not qualify for the elusive Resident golf card which makes this a binary situation. If you have one of the coveted cards, you would be crazy to golf anywhere else given the price versus the quality of the course. If you don't live in the city, there are too many other courses in slightly better condition for a lot less money to make Harding Park worth the cash. read more

One of my absolute favorite courses in San Francisco. Harding park is long and tests your mental toughness. The course layout makes it look easy but boy does the second shot count on every hole... Greens are firm and fast and the pace of play is decent. Good practice area and plenty of parking. This is the easier golf course to drive to as compared to Presidio. read more
