Went here for a pre-movie snack. The place is directly next to Trattoria Romana proper and shares a space with Trattoria Express. You'll be entering through the Trat Express door. Inside is a little weird. There's a mixture of soft yellow lighting that lets you know that you're in Trattoria Express and then an abrupt change in the flooring and lighting to signify TR Ginger (I guess?). I understand that it's supposed to be a more casual version of Trattoria Romana but the whole atmosphere was a little uninviting. It was also really cold in there (literally and figuratively). It's a little contrary to being a warm casual eating space.
Once we got in, we kind of wandered around for a little bit before just sitting down. There was no hostess or waitress to instruct you on what to do. It's kind of vague since you can place orders at the counter, sit at the unattended bar, or maybe just sit down. Once we sat down we were eventually tended to by a waitress. She handed us a (mostly) identical menu to Trattoria Romana and a wine list. All of the wines are overpriced for their quality, but that's something I've come to expect from the Trattoria family of restaurants. Four glasses of decent wine were about 50 dollars.
On to the food, here's what we ordered:
Roasted eggplant Bruschetta: Was a cold, slab of roasted eggplant drenched in white balsamic. There might have been a little pepper there. Tasted like a slimy vinegar sponge. It was also on soggy toasts. Normally I eat make some kind of effort to eat food that I order, but I just couldn't even. Yikes.
Cheese plate: At TR Ginger you can order a cheese board. You need to pay 6 dollars for a board containing some honey, fig preserves, and two 0.25" pieces of crostini. Felt like the 6 dollar charge for a board containing such a meager amount of food was a little excessive.
The meats/cheeses are then ordered a la carte at prices ranging from 4-8 dollars each. We ordered the buffalo mozzarella, gorgonzola dolce, and the taleggio. The cheeses were good, but refrigerator temperature so we had to wait a bit before we could actually eat them.
Overall:
(-) Atmosphere is terrible for actually hanging out.
(-) Overcharging for wine and boards sans cheese
(-) Cold cheese
(-) Eggplant monstrosity
(+) The waitress was nice, although I was a bit surprised they didn't comp the bruschetta.
It's a shame because I like the pizza place. read more
