Incredible dinner here. Great food, superb service. Server was Brittney S, with Sara (?) the understudy. Great service ladies! Started with Duckin delicacies: six tender fried duck wings tossed in sweet + spicy maple samba followed by the most delicious taco I have ever tasted: called roasted [gf] it was sweet tender pork + pickled red onion + cotija cheese + lime crema. The second taco was called grilled: shredded spice-braised chicken + queso fresco + shaved onion. My side was an incredible chili dusted grilled watermelon. Delicious. My sister works here, and brought us for dinner during our visit to Vermont... and we were way too excited about all this food with good reason. Their menu is very unique. On vacations I always say that I don't want to waste time eating somewhere I can eat at home, and I can honestly say I've never been anywhere in the US like Trail Break. The decor is so thoughtful and detailed. The ski lift chairs, the community table, wood pieces on a bar surround, and so many repurposed items- very cool! Today was my first time here, and let me tell you - this place exceeded my expectations by a mile! When you walk inside, the decor makes you feel as though you're in Southern California with surfboards, bright colors, and fun usable chairlifts. Music was upbeat at an appropriate volume. Various artwork displayed beautiful surfing portraits on the wall. Our waitress, Catherine (?), was super friendly and relatable. She gave us ample of time to decide but punctual. Popcorn was given as soon as we sat down, and the food and drinks came out quickly. I do wish that my sampler beers came out on a flight plate and not individually on the table. As far as the food, highly recommend!! The street corn was so tasty with the creamy,tangy sauce and crunchy popcorn crust. It was grilled to perfection and left me wanting more. I ordered the chilled and blackened fish tacos. I'm thankful for the lime that was seated on the side of the plate as it was a great vehicle to tie in all the dish components. The chilled, raw ahi tuna taco satisfied me completely with some crunchiness, avocado, and delicious tuna. Though the blackened was also good, I wish there was a pickled element to the taco. Yo, so, Trailbreak is AWESOME. I was so surprised by the food!! It is shockingly good for an American spin on Mexican food. Get their corn on the cob (will blow your mind), fish tacos and/or fish burrito, and plaintains. Holy lord, the plantains!! They are sweet, crispy, gooey, and delicious. I didn't think I'd be able to find food this good in the Upper Valley. We were all stunned. They do have some outdoor seating if you want to "dine in," which is nice during C19, and you can get frothy beers and cocktails to warm your soul while your fingers freeze. They also do takeout... just make sure to check your order. We've had a few mix-ups here! read more

We like it. My wife a little more than me I think. The food is pretty good. The menu looks a little overwhelming to look at at first for some reason (especially on your phone which is the only option with COVID) but when you spend sometime with it, it's pretty simple and doesn't actually have a lot of items. But whatever their food is good. They have a surfer/island living themed decor. I don't love it but that's a personal taste. The clincher for me though (which is what earned the 4th star) is the variety of beers on tap. They have a lot. Everyone I tried has been phenomenal. A bit pricy but worth it. Great spot! Excellent outdoor space. Very relaxing place to enjoy the sun and then with friends. Our waiter was attentive which made it easy to keep ordering beers off their extensive tap list with some real gems on there.also because she was attentive we could sort of cycle through small plates as opposed to eating one big meal. My boyfriend thought the tacos were too complex - he would have rather had a list of all ingredients they had to make the tacos and then he could put them together (like a nice pizza place does). He didn't like the combos they had assembled as the taco choices. My wife and I made reservations and stopped in since we heard so many positive reviews about this place. The food was great. I ordered a burrito and my wife ordered tacos. Our server/bartender was friendly and helpful. My burrito did not come out with my wife's tacos and I was told it was dropped on the ground. Before I could say anything they gave me a taco on the house as well as churros until my burrito came out. I felt that was pretty classy. Being from Southern California I was sure there was no way they could measure up to home. OMG... unbelievable! Had the blackened char and seared beef tacos with street corn. I could have licked the plate. And, had these not been so filling, I would have ordered more. My friend readily salivated over his sweet pork tacos. Let's not forget the drinks... great selection on tap, good bottle selection and the watermelon margarita was perfectly strong and spicy. This aint it, man. This place is very deliberately quirky, and I'm down for that. Menu is super punny, and the flavor profiles here are "interesting" and different. However, despite each dish working conceptually, execution was lacking. Maybe I went on an off day, but felt like the menu concepts were developed by someone with clearly stronger ability than whoever prepared it. While this gap usually exists, it was too large this day for me to thoroughly enjoy the experience. A few dishes to talk about: 1. Free popcorn to start, but this ones got some sort of.. cinnamon, brown sugar, thyme, cumin mix on it (I'm just guessing, but someone tell me I'm wrong). Cool! Unique and tasty. 2. DUCK wings in sweet chili sauce. The wings are actually fried incredibly well (twice fried perhaps? ala korean style?), and this was the best dish we had. 3. The carne asada in the carne asada... wasn't carne asada. The steak is shaved bulgogi style, and while I didn't mind this dish, there wasn't enough textural contrast (despite the best efforts of a little red onion) and the dish was served lukewarm. 4. "pork-Q-pine" quesadilla. Surprisingly, the easiest dish to get right came out the worst. This dish reads: sweet roasted pork, pineapple, jalepeno crema, and cheese. How do you mess this up? The ratios were off: too much cheese (didn't know this was possible), not enough pork, and the worst offender, the quesadilla was hardly browned and was served lukewarm to the point where the cheese was still still springy. All in all, good concepts, good vibe, good service. So close to being great, but the misses on texture, ratio, and temperature were just too wide. The duck wings were delicious, and the tacos are worth trying. But I can't recommend these as "good" tacos. I won't be coming back on my own volition, but would be happy to come try their other concepts if its where the group ends up. Great drink menu though. read more

Great place to dine during Covid. The tacos are huge (I would recommend no more than 3 per person). 2 of us shared 4 tacos and were so full. The food was quite good, but the service was not, hence my two-star review. My son and I were seated shortly after 7 PM. We placed our order about 10 minutes later, and our food was not delivered until 55 minutes after that. When we asked the wait staff, if there was any problem, they said the kitchen was simply very busy, and promised that our food would be next to come out. It was not. In the meantime, the two parties sitting on opposite sides of us, who were seated well after us, were served. I suspect that our order may have gotten lost. I get it. Running a restaurant is a tough job. Customers are demanding. The kitchen backs up. But I would've appreciated a more forthcoming explanation, and more than a cursory "sorry for the delay," when we were the last people to be served. I happened to catch trail break in the community recently. They were awesome. I have been wanting to try this place forever. I got the chicken taco with the street corn. Wow so much flavor for white river the land of bland. the service was spot on. The ambiance, uh they were in a parking lot so lol. They are definitely worth a try. I recommend. read more

It was incredibly busy, which I guess speaks to its reputation as a restaurant. We waited a bit but the hostess was quick to find us a table as soon as one became available. They recommend you order quickly if you don't want to wait, so we ordered food and drinks at the same time, which ended up being the right call. The complimentary popcorn had a very bizarre seasoning and tasted stale, so I'd skip it and save room for the actual food (which took quite awhile but was worth the wait). The prices were a bit on the higher end, but portion sizes were huge. I went with two tacos and a side -- the mahi mahi and cauliflower tacos were both delicious and had generous portions, and the chips and salsa were great. The salsa was especially delicious, so I'd highly recommend! I also ordered a spicy watermelon agua fresca, which was delicious! All in all, a good dining experience, if you have patience. read more

Trail Break catered our wedding this fall and they did such an amazing job. They took the time to break down plenty of plan options for us, walked us step by step through how much to order of each item and what the fan favorites were, and they provided stellar service. We had an extremely rainy wedding day at the top of a very muddy, hilly venue. Despite the weather, they opened up shop and kept all of our guests fed. The food itself was absolutely outstanding--everyone was talking about it--and the cocktails were just as great. The had tents set up to keep everyone dry, had the custom coasters and napkins we made ready for the guests, and when the day was over, they packaged all of our leftovers up neatly (which we devoured over the next few days). We had a wide mix of guests with allergies (dairy, soy, nuts, gluten), and a few vegetarians and vegans as well, and Trail Break accommodated everyone perfectly. The staff was extremely kind and gracious despite the cold and the rain. We DIYed as much of our wedding as we could, so having Trail Break come in and out so professionally so I didn't have to worry about a thing was such a relief. Their pricing was also some of the fairest I encountered while looking at local caterers. Overall I cannot recommend them enough. If you are considering them for your wedding or event, don't hesitate! read more

The beer was pretty good. We ordered some beers that we didn't like and that's fine. The burrito I ordered was awful. When I sent it back the manager was less than helpful in trying to resolve the issue. The burrito was way too salty and I could not eat but 1/4 of the burrito. Once the burrito was comped from the check, the manager came back and slapped the checks on the table. The manager then passive aggressively said, "Since the food here didn't suit your taste buds, you should dine elsewhere next time." I feel like this was inappropriate for a manager to say and it was poor customer service. read more

We went the first weekend they were open and it was apparent they were still getting the hang of things. Everyone was nice though and they seemed to appreciate our patience. The atmosphere is cool but still comfortable with mixed seating and shuffle board. We got 3 different tacos, a burrito, the churros, and the chocotaco. My husband also got beers. The food was good and the chocotaco was delicious, made me feel like a kid again. My only real wish is that the hot sauce had more kick (was thin and bland). If done better could have really added to the tacos. Otherwise, I'd say this place has serious potential once they work out the kinks and I will definitely be back. Update: I have since been back, and while the service was still a bit shaky, the hot sauce was much improved. This time I tried Left Coast Burrito which was AH-MAZ-ING! Possibly the best burrito I've ever experienced in my life. Updated update: We have seen been back a couple more time and it seems like things have settled into a routine and they worked out the kinks and now this is one of our top spots to visit. Killer starters (holy crap, try the queso! It's not noted on the menu if it's made with local cheese or not {in *VT*?? you'd think so, right??} but this is *certainly* not yo Mama's run-of-the-mill Velveeta+Rotel queso... DELICIOUS!!) I had, in addition to the queso, a quesadilla of chickpeas and sweet potato hash - totally yummy, and ginormous enough that it also served as the next morning's breakfast. Washed it down with a delicious hazy local IPA, River Roost's ("local" as in right across the street - love!) Mas Verde. We had awesome service from relapsed beer-geek, cartooning-student Marshall. TB is the side of White River Junction you never knew existed: a little bit O' Cali right smack in the middle of a town many assumed got hit by an EMP bomb for the last 10 years. This is Point Break meets Warren Miller, set in the cool industrial feel of a Chipotle... so long as you ask yourself, "have I ever seen a lift chair booth in the middle of a Chipotle?" (answer: no, na uh, never). Vintage ski porn and surfer flicks loop the TVs, creative cocktails sounding like margaritas but tasting nothing like them grace the bar, and a menu cheekier than Chuck from The Goonies fills your belly. Toss that into your mental Wok, stir fry it up, and you get a pretty good handle on what to expect stepping into TBT+T. Great addition to the downtown White River Junction scene. read more

RACIST OWNER TOPHER! My name is Hasan, I am a physician for Dartmouth & the VA. I frequent Trail Break 2-3x per week. (Use to at least) Until I met the racist owner, Topher. On Saturday, my meal arrived 1 hour late, due to miscommunication. The owner opted to cover my beer ($8) until he met me... However, the bill refused to cover my drink, which was OKAY. I was happy and requested to pay for my meal in FULL as the bartenders (Shemus & Peter) are great human beings. Later I asked why my beer wasn't covered, to which the owner immediately stated, "You don't need to come back here". I asked him if it was because of my race (South Asian, from Bangladesh) to which he stated "yep, I don't need you here". Despite racial remarks, I requested a professional conversation with the owner, though I understood this wouldn't resolve the larger conflict. Nonetheless, he refused to speak with me on an individual and humanistic level and again emphasized that I was not welcome at this establishment. I could not help but draw tears as I exited Trail Break. Regardless, I will not be returning to Trail Break. However, this is by no means to derail others. Despite being a HORRIBLE OWNER, Trail Break has exemplary employees that go above and beyond for the customers. Tonight I went to Trail Break for dinner I'm regular at the restaurant and always order the carnitas/ pork taco. I also ordered their new cauliflower taco . My first order came out with a carnasda taco then my second order was wrong again. When I finally received the taco it was pork mush. No carnitas flavor it didn't look the same it resembled baby food and the taco was moonshie not crispy. I asked that the taco be taken off my order it was not. The experience tonight was very disappointing. Trail Break was my favorite restaurant. :( read more

Good wait service, excellent SoCal meets Ski The East authenticity vibe/decor. The food was just right--portions, prep, presentation, etc. Had the surf & slaw burrito and it was fanstastic! Add in the pickled veggies with a little kick and it not only tasted great but felt fresh and healthy too. A curated selection of IPAs (local and elsewhere) and other bevs. We'll be back for sure. Only suggestion is to not be seated next to the tv monitors near the back tables...spent more time watching vintage surf films and not enough in focused conversation with my wife! read more

Absolute adored this place! Beers are amazing. I had 4 different ones and loved them all. Also they have lots of great vegan and vegetarian options. The food is decent enough if you can figure out what you're actually ordering ahead of time. The "cutesy" menu item naming and 2008-inspired comic-sans-eque website design make the entire ordering process a visual nightmare, even for the sharpest of eyes. I get it's themed, but in this case, way less would be way more. It also seems like Trail Break is dedicated to being the only restaurant in White River Junction to stay open for Monday Dinner. Every week, without fail, the place is packed (due both to local preference and lack of another option within walking distance), and yet there is never any effort made to relieve the incredibly-predictable Monday rush. I get it, it's hard! But at the very least, the automated text system needs to go. If it's going to take 90 minutes to prep a $12 to-go salad (while ignoring dietary restriction notes, leaving those of us with allergies out to dry), fine. But don't tell me it's only going to take 30 minutes just to then have me stand around for another hour. As a former local, I really want to root for this place -- there's a ton of heart and hard work coming from the staff. Unfortunately, lackluster management seems to have them barely scraping by. Transparency and simplicity go a long way, especially with Upper Valley folks! read more

On my way to Sugarbush, got hungry for food and decided to stop off before getting onto I-89. Honestly I'm not sure why this restaurant doesn't already have 5 stars. Food, service and ambiance are all amazing. Nachos, tortilla soup, Brussel sprouts and pulled pork tacos are all jam packed with fresh ingredients and full of flavor. Trailbreaker Amber Ale was medium bodied and low on bite, perfect addition with food. Fried plantains as a side were also just so amazing. I can't say enough.
