I ordered the Chirashi (Sashimi Salad), and my husband had the Sushi Bento. Both dishes were outstanding. The sushi rice was a standout--perfectly cooked and seasoned, which is rare to find even at well-known spots. The selection of sashimi was exceptionally fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. I brought my daughter here as an after-school treat. I wasn't prepared for the degree of quality and reverence for food - nor the superior kindness, thoughtfulness, and warmth of the staff. The vibe is very clean, classic Japanese minimalism that maximizes space without becoming claustrophobic. The service was exceptional for a 3pm drop in and my daughter was constantly delighted by the care to very whimsical detail (an adorable rabbit side plate, as we split a lunch bento) and kwai chopsticks to help my lady work on her chopstick skills with some dignity. I have been here several time over the last several years and have overall enjoyed the food. Today I stopped In for lunch with my kid while using the laundromat next door. They were pretty busy so we sat down and waited to be helped. Before I talk about the food, I want to comment on the service- which I found to be exceptional. My son ordered 2 sushi rolls, then I ordered an entree and a couple apps for us to share. His rolls came out in the normal time and it was quite a while for the rest of the food. Maybe an extra 10-15 min? It wasn't that terrible but noticeably a longer wait than what appeared to be normal, but they were busy so it didn't bother me that much. When they brought the apps (gyoza and veggie tempura) and my main they apologized for the wait and explained a mix up with the order. No worries. A couple minutes later our server came back and said due to the delay, the appetizers are on the house. (!!!) the amount of times a restaurant has proactively apologized for any service issue has been like zero I think. Basically, every place I've been waits for you to present an issue and then even then usually they just say sorry. They don't even think of doing anything until you ask. I didn't complain and wouldn't have. I still would have left a good review, but I am very impressed with the service. They went above and beyond and I will never forget that. The sushi rolls ordered were the orange blossom roll and the Alaskan roll. They were tasty and beautifully presented. The orange slices and all were so pretty! I've never seen sushi presented like that. (I don't eat a ton of sushi so that's not saying a lot, but from my limited knowledge/experience it's unique). I tried both rolls and the fish was fresh. The veggie tempura and gyoza were tasty- really, can't go wrong with either. I always wish there was more, but these are standard serving sizes. They are $3.99 for gyoza and $7.99 for veggie tempura. For my main I ordered beef donburi. I had Never heard of donburi before today so I was curious to try something new. It wasn't quite what I expected. I didn't realize the sauce would be teriyaki. It was basically the rice veggies and meat all piled together instead of separate with the teriyaki sauce all over it and an egg on top. I was a little sad about the egg. I thought I would have a soft yolk that I could break and enjoy with the bowl but it was more cooked than that. Im not sure if the egg was still all one piece even? It was tasty regardless and with a menu this large, it's fun to try new things. (I'm a creature of habit so trying new things at a place I've been to several times isnt always my jam. We live nearby, but have never been in. She and I are both vegetarian, so we shared edamame, tofu yakisoba, and tofu teriyaki. Her dad had chicken teriyaki. Everything was really good! I've been back here a handful of times because they are one of the only sushi joints in my neighborhood and have been reliable with good quality sushi. However, I will not be back anymore due to a terrible restaurant atmosphere and lack of professionalism by some of the staff there. What's the point in good food if you can't enjoy it in peace? 75% of the times I've been there, there seems to be some sort of yelling and aggressive shouting happening in the kitchen, to the point that it made me and other guests in the restaurants uncomfortable. It happens often enough that it's clear there's an issue here that management can't seem to address. I'm not expecting a fine dining ambience, but guests should be able to experience a peaceful meal without looking over their shoulders worried about what's going on and whether it's going to explode into a physical dispute. Super cute, almost divey feeling sushi spot. Came in for lunch completely by accident with my two kiddos. We were on a neighborhood walk and saw this place in our nearby strip mall. It just so happened we stopped at the flying fish first and they STILL aren't doing dine in service but that's another story...so by happenstance we found this gem instead. Stopped in randomly before heading to the Tacoma Musical Playhouse..small restaurant probably about 6 or so tables. I was weary when we stepped inside, but were welcomed with kindness...it wasn't too busy, only 2 other tables but there was a lot of ppl coming in who ordered takeout. The food came quick and service was great. We weren't too hungry so we ordered some sushi. I got the Japan Chirashi bowl. My partner got the Orange Blossom roll and the Salmon lemon roll. The 2 sushi rolls were big and delicious. My Chirashi bowl was big as well, lots of sashimi came with it. It did need more rice though. The sashimi seemed fresh, it was not sticky or fishy. The only reason why I didn't give this place a 5 was because of some minor cleanliness issues. The tables were a bit sticky.. we only had one menu per table.
