We made a reservation in advance and that got us seated upstairs, where you can also dine but it's fine to only order drinks. The bar is downstairs and you walk through it and up the stairs to get to the upstairs dining area. The restrooms are back downstairs so keep that in mind. At the door, you show your ID before you enter. The server was really helpful and friendly. We perused the menu, which was a book of photographs, with great descriptions of the drinks and the photos of San Francisco culture. It was hard to choose only one drink because they all had interesting ingredients. The ice in my drink had words inscribed in it. That was really cool (literally); I've never seen that effect before in a cocktail. The drinks were nice and if you don't want a cocktail, they also have root beer, beer and wine. The table next to us ordered the kale salad and it was piled high so we had to order that too but we got it to go, along with the fries, which were delicious.
Trick Dog was ranked #100 on 2026 North America's 50 Best Bars. We liked it here so much we came back twice during our trip in SF. For drinks we ordered the Oaxacan Carnival, SoMa, Urban Canine and Trick Dog. My favorite was the Oaxacan cocktail, and it's what I got again when we came back the second time. For food we ordered bao buns, french fries, cauliflower, and the trick nuggets. The nuggets were so good and crispy I ordered them again when we came back. The only downside is the space is a bit small and it can get crowded. The service was also slow at times and was difficult to get the attention of the bartenders, but the drinks and food made up for it. And even though it was crowded, it felt fun and I loved the music they were playing. The menu design being like a photography book was also really cool, and my boyfriend even bought one to keep.
Drinks are great as always. One of the bartenders was unnecessarily rude to me (it was 4:05pm) and that really soured my experience after being a fan of Trick Dog for years. Not coming back until the aggression subsides. Saturday afternoons aren't meant for unwarranted passive aggressive service.
This place is AMAZING - 10/10! Not only did all of the drinks taste great, they were also really cool looking. We ordered the Ocean Park, Dolores, SoMa, and Oaxaca Carnaval. The bartender was great - we didn't know what to order and she was super helpful. For food... where do I even begin? The Famous Kale Salad - I now understand why it's famous. So freaking good! It's a big portion, but it was so good we ate the whole thing. We also ordered the Trick Nuggets and the Mission Dog. The nuggets were good but nothing extraordinary. But the Mission Dog - OUT OF THIS WORLD FANTASTIC! The bar has both indoor and outdoor seating, we sat at the bar. Their menu is super cute - it has pictures of San Francisco for each menu item, and you can actually purchase the menu. We did! Definitely coming back.
This is a world famous SF institution that's definitely worth a visit. Their cocktails are creative and one of a kind. Be sure to read through them all and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations, as there could be some that aren't to your taste. And don't sleep on their food, which can be quite hearty and delicious. This place can be quite busy, so be patient for a good seat.
Absolutely love the creativity and energy behind this bar. Trick dog changes up their menu every half year, and they go all out with the concept. I went recently and the theme is Meet Me in the City (photography + cocktails) and I felt like I was perusing a photography book when looking at the menu. Pictured below was their circus theme from last year. There's always a cocktail or two that I like, and they have a good range from classics to creative twists. The chicken nuggets are also delicious lol. There are two floors in this bar, with a chill dining area on top and more of a normal bar / loud music scenario on the bottom. Love that you can pick your vibe and run with it (although the dining area does close after a certain hour). Drinks are pretty fast even when it's busy, and overall a good time

Trick dog is a great local bar especially for after work drinks. I can't speak too much to the cocktails but I've gotten wine and beer here. This time tried the pickle beer, I love pickles so this one wa really interesting. They also have a selection of food which is great, all their sandwiches are on hot dog buns so it's kinda funny! But this place is definitely on the pricier side. It's also pretty frequently super packed at times I can't really stay long because people are legit shoulder to shoulder. I mean no fault of the bars that just shows it's popular but definitely not a place to chill and chat since it's so busy.
I used to love this spot, I've enjoyed my cocktails although they are $20. The service is just awful. Waited ~20 minutes while the bartender looked through me as if I was an invisible. Ordered my drink and I tried to also ask for fries. As I said, may I also get some fr-- the bartender held up 2 fingers cutting me off and said "I'm not taking any more orders right now" and then took someone else's drink order. It was wild. I've had rude service from this same bartender repeatedly so I won't be back. Lost resort down the block has the most friendly staff!
After hearing so many rave reviews of this place, I'm truly disappointed with my experience. I love the quirky menus and the neighborhood the restaurant sits in. But where Trick Dog fell flat for me, was the service. It was extremely hard to order as the bar gets very rowdy and bartenders take their time making drinks. I'm especially disappointed that the bartender failed to mention that one of our drinks was non-alcoholic. It was in the fine print of the menu, and I only noticed when I went back to admire how beautiful the menu was. Extremely disappointed that I wasn't given a heads up, given that the drink costs the same, and are highly overpriced.
My crew and I wanted to find a bar nearby and I found Trick Dog open until 2AM! Their kitchen was still open until midnight so we wanted to grab food as well! It's almost like a club but a bar too. The music they were playing 11/29 was popping with a lot of throwbacks (Alice Deejay, Venga Boys). The bar is pretty intimate and not really good for groups but lucky we were only a group of 3 and found space at the bar. The drinks are super unique (see photo). Not overly sweet and the alcohol isn't too harsh. Once midnight hit, the bar announced it was one of the bartender's birthdays! Pacho?? So wholesome to see the workers announce this and the whole bar sang happy birthday to him. What a cool community Trick Dog has created! The vibes are chill and I would recommend if you're in the area! I'd love to come back to try the famous kale salad though haha
We stopped here for a quick drink on the way to dinner! The menu was so fun and had a lot of Asian inspiration. We needed a pick me up so we went for their version of espresso martini! We couldn't stop talking about the ube foam! Super fun. Did not need a reservation and was able to order at the bar. Bartenders were super friendly. Music was good too!
I've given this restaurant many tries over the last several years, and honestly, it's always fell short. Normally it's super crowded, like shoulder to shoulder. The ambiance is pretty rough BUT the bar tenders are all great and very attentive. They do their job well, this review has NOTHING to do about them. It's more about the drinks Although I've never had the food there, the drinks are ... okay. They are really pricy (~20$) and For a 20$ drink I'd expect more. We had an ube drink and some kind of tequila drink? It was sour and the ube drink was something i could make at home. TLDR not my favorite place for a drink, go around the corner for better drinks at true laurel. But it was Monday night and we were out of options soo yeah

Super cool place. We came here on a date night and the vibes of the place really helped us enjoy ourselves. We had a few cocktails and dinner. The drink menu rotates regularly and they were doing a circus theme during our trip. I liked how creative the drinks were. I definitely enjoyed one cocktail more than the other, but I really appreciated how imaginative they were. The food was upscale versions of what you would find at like a concession stand. The chicken sandwich and hot dog were both super delicious. If you haven't been before, definitely worth checking out. read more

I am always impressed by the genius of these bartenders who come up with amazing cocktails with ingredients that make you scratch your head and wonder how it will taste (must admit that the sour cream and chives martini needed a side of mashed potatoes). Super love their rotational menu with an inspired story (bring back best hits menu). The place gets packed so practice your patience it's worth it when your cocktail comes. Had a chance to visit Trick Dog, a bar in the Mission and I have to say this is one of my favorite bars in SF. The parking here thankfully was nice to find, it was a little small so beware seating is a little hard to find, but there are alot of seats outside which is nice. Overall, ambiance is decent but typical Bar type. We didn't end up getting food but we ordered cocktails. For my Cocktail I got the Bonzo which was DELICIOUS! This was on the light and refreshing side with citrusy flavor and I absolutely loved this. The service here was also awesome and you could tell everything was made quickly and fresh. My friend ordered The Poochy which was also nice - the drink reminds me of a strawberry milkshake - so yummy but definitely on the sweeter side. My other friend ordered the Rumplepaws which was also nice - but this drink reminded me of a tiki bar drink which I don't like as much. Overall though, drinks were fabulous and it really hit the spot! read more
The creativity on their menu displays and the quality of their drinks here is top notch. This is one of my friend's favorite bars in the city so she took me so I could see for myself! Staff was so sweet, drinks were DELICIOUS and the interior was cute! Look at the art hanging on the walls, it's all past menus from the place that have been framed. My personal favorite (besides their current postcard one) was the flash tattoo themed menu. It is pretty small inside so when it gets busy it gets PACKED! Be prepared to be squished if you aren't at a bar or a table. But surprisingly cleared out by 11pm on a Friday night. read more

For over a decade, I've heard that Trick Dog is one of the best bars in San Francisco. I'm happy to report that it 100% lives up to the hype! After a little bit of waiting, we were able to get seats at the bar. The menu was circus-themed this time and we got: - Ring Master: Wyoming Whiskey, lichiko Shochu, coffee, plum, vanilla, citrus - Human Dart Board: Hendricks gin, tomato, peach, ver jus, dill, stracciatella, lemon - High Flyers: Herradura silver tequila, bianco vermouth, strawberry, kiwi, sorrel, almond, lime And 2 shots: - Churro: Lalo Tequila, Licor 43, cinnamon (AWESOME!!!) - Candy Apple: Calvados, amaro, peanuts I loved my Ring Master. It tasted like a Neapolitan espresso martini. And the Human Dart Board was freaking MIND-BLOWING The stracciatella cheese foam... omg. It was citrusy, light, surprising. Not at all savory like I thought it was going to be. This was talent, a cut above the rest. The Churro was the smoothest tequila shot I've ever taken. It was dangerously delicious. Located in the middle of all the yummy spots of the mission (san ho won, Penny roma, flour + water, true laurel), this bar was actually quite popping for a Monday. The current theme is astronauts and the physical menu was elaborately space themed. I got the collinder 140 because the sesame in the ingredient list piqued my interest. It was definitely very spirit forward and you could taste the shochu in the aftertaste. I also dont usually go for whiskey based cocktails but overall super complex tasting and funky. I was kind of disappointed to find out they just sprinkled sesame seeds instead of putting in sesame oil. Overall funky but yummy. read more
Recently stopped by Trick Dog with a friend and was reminded why it's one of my favorite SF bars. Tried the Poochy from their current "Dogs" menu and it hit the spot. Don't sleep on their food either - the QD Mission Dog and fries are really good. Love how they keep things fresh by constantly changing up their themed menus. Their music is always on point. If you're looking for creative cocktails, solid bites, and a spot that knows how to set the mood, this is it! read more
Been here once before and it definitely held up on a second visit! The trick dog (basically a burger but hot dog shaped) is one of the best burgers in SF as far as im concerned and I have tried many of them. Delicious savory flavor on the meat and perfect composition. You will not be disappointed. Fries were great as well. I had never had them before but they were hot, crispy, and super super salty (in a good way) Our cocktails were also delicious, didnt try them the first time but i loved the dog names and the menu being theater playbill themed was a nice touch. Stopped by on a Monday night around 6:30pm and the bar area was surprisingly busy! Their menu is in a form of a playbill which is very creative but a little hard to digest in my opinion. We had multiple drinks off their cocktail list - one of which came with a side of popcorn! Very fun place to check out! read more
TL;DR: cute neighborhood bar with delicious drinks and excellent fries Came by on a sunny Friday afternoon and sat on the patio to enjoy one of the rare warmer days in the city. When we popped by in the early evening, it wasn't too crowded but got more busy as the evening progressed. Service was as efficient as they could be considering how busy they got. The menu is cute and resembles a playbill. They have a small food menu and we got the thrice cooked fries. They were so crispy and delicious! Ketchup was good, doggie sauce was addictive. Would definitely recommend ordering this to share. I saw a bunch of other tables ordering the kale salad and it looked huge. Maybe I'll try it next time. Drinks: Rumplepaws (mount gay eclipse rum, st George green Chile vodka, peach, pineapple, chimichurri, lime): refreshing, definitely got more notes of the pineapple than anything else with a hint of spice from the Chile vodka Tumblewoofus (Hendricks gin, salers gentiane, martini dry vermouth, kumquat, passion fruit, cucumber on a big cube): nicely balanced, not sure I got as much of the kumquat but was a good drink) Kibbleshanks (Jack Daniel's bonded rye, Chambord, elderberry, ume, purple shiso, lime): refreshing, good balance of flavors, looked pretty Poochy (Ford's gin, amoro de vino, sweet vermouth, strawberry, Szechuan peppercorn, cream, egg white, lemon): impressive foam structure like a Ramos gin fizz! Trick Dog has amazing cocktails with shocking good food for a bar. The bar menu is incredibly creative and seems to cycle on a seasonal basis. On my most recent visit, the menu was formatted as a playbill for "Trick Dog Theatre", and the name of the drinks were named after dogs. On the Wednesday evening of my visit, the bar was not particularly busy and I was able to order my drinks without having to push my way through the crowd, or even shout my order. The bartenders here are very fast at assembling the cocktails so don't step away thinking it will take a while because it'll be ready sooner than you think. Like the menu, the cocktails themselves are creative and all have a beautiful garnish. I got the "Rufftopher" -- George Dickel bourbon, Bishop's Eden apple brandy, Punt e Mes, Mr. Black cold brew liqueur, Amaro, plum, and the drink was garnished with a golden leaf skeleton. I loved the complexity of flavors in this drink. All cocktails are $18, which is pretty much standard for San Francisco. If you're looking for a small bar bite, the thrice-cooked french fries are delicious and are perfect for sharing with a group. I love Trick Dog and it's one of the few bars in SF that consistently delivers on both energy and execution. The room is almost always buzzing, but it never feels chaotic in a bad way. It's lively, social, and genuinely fun, whether you're there with a small group or meeting friends before dinner. The vibe alone would make it a solid neighborhood spot, but the drinks are what keep me coming back. Their cocktails are thoughtfully constructed in a way that goes beyond the usual "three ingredients over ice." You can tell there's real prep happening behind the scenes. They carbonate and bottle drinks ahead of time, dial in textures, and clearly spend time refining flavors. Even when the menu leans playful, the drinks themselves are serious and well balanced. It's rare to find a bar that can maintain that kind of technical consistency while staying this busy. What really sets Trick Dog apart, though, is the menu concept. They change it every six months, which on its own is impressive. But it's not just a new list of drinks. Every iteration comes with a completely new, fully realized theme. I've seen menus presented as mini vinyl records, a full photography book, even a zodiac-style calendar. The design is cohesive, aesthetic, and surprisingly detailed. It turns ordering a cocktail into an experience. There's a lot of thought and creative energy packed into what could otherwise be just another Mission cocktail bar. Trick Dog makes it feel special without being self-serious, and that balance is hard to pull off. read more
We stopped in here while in the area and were pleasantly surprised we had never made the stop before! I'm a dog person so anything with a Dog theme and I'm in, but this place didn't stop there. They have an impressive drink menu with a few things I'd never seen, and they also have these delicious NA waters (?) that I wish I could remember the name of. Arrived around 4:45 PM on a Saturday and luckily secured last two seats at the bar. Came here for the nuggets, thrice-fried potatoes (fries), and ordered the mission dog with cheese + extra sautéed onions at the bouncer's recommendation. The nuggets were AMAZING, just as I remembered them to be. The honey Dijon/mustard sauce that it comes with is to die for (when paired with the chicken, that is). The fries were so, so disappointing. To have gone through the trouble of having fried the potatoes a total of three times, and to have to served lukewarm and nowhere nearly as crispy as expected (in fact, they were somewhat limp, borderline soggy) - such a shame. I was SO looking forward to these being the perfect fries. Great thickness though, paired well with the ketchup but the mayo/cheese sauce was weird. Honestly, I loved how passionate the bouncer was about this mission dog rec, but it just wasn't to my preference I guess. Definitely not ordering again especially because of its price. Ordered a jarritos instead of a cocktail and wow, what a mark up, but that's how it goes I guess. Still, love the vibe of the restaurant. Clean restroom in the hallway in the back, shared with two other spaces, if I'm not mistaken. read more

Very unique bar nestled in Mission! The themes rotate here every so often which is so fun! When we went it was themed like Cats the musical, except Dogs. The menu was a playbill which I thought was so creative. The drinks were also featured like cast members. I loved my drink -- it was super sweet. They have lots of creative options for everyone so you'll definitely find something to enjoy. Their food is also pretty good! They serve chicken nuggets, fries, burgers, and hot dogs (+ kale salad) but it's all slightly elevated and not your typical bar food. Would recommend ordering something as a snack. The surrounding area is so cute and filled with lots of restaurants, and feels very safe and lovely to walk around. Service was also fantastic; it was easy ordering drinks and the bartender was knowledgeable about the menu. Have been wanting to come here for forever so I'm so glad I finally went :) Would definitely come back for their other menus! read more
Sweet little upscale bar with rotating cocktails with different themes every month. The interior is low lit with loud fun dancing music. The bartenders are super busy with the intricate drinks and it's hard to get recommendations or any question in over the loud music. Each drink is a little over $20 after tax. An oldie but a goodie. Haven't been here in a minute and in the area. The menu is Always so interesting. This time it was postcards with different themes. I went with the mezcal and carrot juice combination and it sounds odd but it actually worked. Wouldn't expect anything less from TD! Also fries were amazing. Packed on a Friday night and had an older demographic of customers. The upstairs half was closed off so it was hard to find space to talk with a group. The bartenders were rude and the martini was not worth $18, but the fries were good and the security and other patrons were kind. read more
worst drink i've ever had in my 23 years of life and my boyfriend said the same. took one sip and was like let's leave and we walked out. very old demographic and just not it. DONT GO. waste of money and time read more

Innovative cocktails! They change up their cocktail menu every few months, so something to look forward to. I love that they named the drinks after yoga poses and have illustrations of dogs doing the poses. Adorable. Great place to grab an inspirational drink, but if you're in the mood for food, there is an upstairs area with seating. Saw lots of people ordering the fries and kale salad. The crispy chicken sando was delicious, although the choice in plateware made it difficult to not make a mess all over the table (maybe that's the point?). It can be pretty noisy inside. I was sitting across the table from my friend and had trouble picking up on bits of the conversation, so I would go elsewhere if you're looking for a less noisy venue. Wait staff was friendly and helpful, but we did have to follow up on a couple of items. I imagine I'd stop by for a drink if I'm ever in the neighborhood. Parking was tricky on a Friday evening, so I would opt for public transit in the future. Looking forward to seeing what kind of cocktails they come up with next! read more

It's called Salty Dog at the moment, and it's giving tiki/pirate theme! Apparently the cocktails are very fun and strong (but filled with pebble ice). The upstairs area is more for reservation only, and the lower level doesn't have a ton of seating besides bar area. There's also an outdoor seating space but it closes down later in the night. I liked the nuggets and fries, but the chicken sando seemed really small for the price (it was on a hotdog bun). I wish I tried the kale salad! The bouncer was super nice and chill. read more
This place never disappoints. The cocktails are so creative and well balanced. The food is fire, especially the perfectly crunchy fries and nuggets. And the kale salad is the best I've ever had with heaping Parm, avocado, and pepitas for a little snap. The service was so welcoming and detail oriented with talented mixologists. I love how the menus keep changing and I get to try new things from spirits to infusions layered with depth and complex flavors that keep me wanting more. Been here many times to grab a drink or two before or after dinner the neighborhood. Trick Dog is always consistent with superior service and tantalizing drinks. Their menu and drink names are so creative. Their latest drink menu has cocktails named after yoga poses. Reading the menu made me want to go to yoga class! On a recent visit here, the place was packed as usual. A server greeted us immediately and handed us a couple of menus even though there wasn't a place to sit or really stand, a true testament to how observant and attentive the staff is. We squeezed into a little spot and decided on drinks. My first drink choice, wild thing was out so I opted for the headstand, which the bartender said was similar to wild thing. My friend ordered the shavasana. Both drinks were really good. Trick Dog will always get my vote for a cool and trendy place to grab a drink! read more

I love a good dog pun. I also love chicken nuggets and kale salad. Trick Dog delivers on all three fronts. Also there are wildly creative drinks. Right now, Trick Dog is in their tiki era with The Salty Dog, which I'm obsessed with. Looks like they have seasonal eras so visit while they're still in the Salty mood. Super fun and the drink we had was great (forgot what it was called but it's in a barrel and it was great!!!). Extremely fun ambiance, especially right now with the theme. I could eat the kale salad and Quik Nuggets here for every meal. Warning: we split the kale salad and nuggets between two folks and were struggling to finish, so keep that in mind. Very very big salad but every bite is worth it. Just love this place, obsessed with it. They're great on Doordash too. Try them out. read more
I dropped into Trick Dog sort of haphazardly during the middle of the week in March and it was nothing like I expected. It was right up to the second story for tiki drinks and snacks with friends. I really enjoyed the Queen Anne's Revenge and their rum punch. I did not, however, enjoy the Happy Delivery. The flavors of the pho spices were a little overpowering for me, and made me think a lot about a cold soup. The food was really delicious, too. Just lil' snacky bites to share between friends. Good fries! Good sliders! Good drinks! Very worthwhile. read more
Trick Dog is a pretty cool bar that has a rotating drink menu that never ceases to amaze me. Offering a variety of craft cocktails, some fruity, some spirit forward, most are pretty dang strong. Trick Dog is not a one trick dog and their constantly changing menu really leaves more to be explored. I keep finding different reasons to come back. Guaranteed I'll try to make it out here at least once every few months because it is the best bar in the Mission Area, prove me wrong. Trick Dog also serves up one of the best kale salads I've ever had, and I'm not even a huge fan of kale. It's pretty much covered in cheese and generously dressed, but mmm so tasty. Their bartenders are also super nice and friendly, and offer great recommendations. Just come, sit down, order a few drinks, and I'm sure you'll have a good time. read more

I'm always searching for the next good cocktail bar and I've had the ability and experience at some of the best in the world, and I have seen bartenders that I trust reference this location so the next time I went to San Francisco I stopped in. I ended up getting a reservation which I now know unnecessary during a weekday but if you want to go that route, I highly recommend it, we had an amazing server. He was fun and very personable. We ended up getting the salad and two cocktails and it was the end of the menu that they had. I think they change their menu two times a year so it's the end of the menu. I had a couple of interesting drinks that I will probably never be able to have again and I'm really appreciative of that and I definitely will add this to the list of my stops every time I'm in San Francisco. The space was really really cute. We sat upstairs in the seating area and the downstairs was way more of a lively bar will come back. Bonus points - the security guard was very attractive. read more

My SO took me here for some birthday drinks and I have to say this hit the spot. We had a reservation, so we were seated in the upper floor above the main bar area, where the ambiance was intimate yet still could feel the vibes of the party down below. The menu changes seasonally, but was Playbill themed when we went. i forgot the exact name but my cocktail had kimchi on the top to add some spice and a cold brew shot. We also ordered the QD french fries (thrice cooked) - each fry was so big and had the perfect crunch. Everything from drinks to food was delicious - I will definitely be back to try the famous kale salad. I recommend checking this place out if you ever find yourself in the area! read more

Are they open again as a normal cocktail bar or what? Lmk Becuase they have no interest in answering their phone or updating their website

Hi. We like to think that all the hours are happy. But more to the point, no.
What time does do y'all stop serving food?
Hi. We do last call for food at 1:30 every day. TD.
When is happy hour?
There is no happy hour. Or, looking at it as an optimist, happy hour is 3pm - 2am seven days a week.
Is the food better than the drinks here?
In my opinion, the food is equally as good as the drinks. The kale salad is especially memorable.
Can you bring your dog to Trick Dog?
Not sure what the official rule is, but I saw a woman holding her dog in the bar this evening. It was crowded. I wouldn't advise bringing a dog here unless you want to hold it the entire time.
