I'm personally insulted by how last night was handled. You hired four punk bands to play a show and then kicked them out for playing the show they were hired to play. You let a customer accost and try to pick a fight with the bands, saying "you drove out all the paying customers" as if we weren't paying customers ourselves, and one of the bartenders was shit talking us whenever he thought we weren't listening (we heard you.) If you don't want punk shows at your venue, that's within your rights, but perhaps if that's the case when people send you their music and ask if they can play at your establishment you should actually bother to listen to the music and see who you're hiring. Went to the bar there, got a beer and it was totally warm. Warmer then room temperature. Took 1 sip and took the beer back. They would not even replace it with another beer, and very rude about it. My prior experiences here have been above average, but this was inexcusable. I can see the oversight of giving someone a warm beer, but to do nothing about it and be rude is inexcusable. read more

I've lived in Berks County my entire life. Last night was the first night I ever tried Troopers... and I will never be back. It's already in a seedy area, the parking lot literally has zero lights... talk about unsafe. The bartenders have no personality. The drinks are way over priced. It is filled to the brim with college students. What set me over the edge, last night, a drunk guy was being so inappropriate and instead of cutting him off or asking him to leave (or at least leave us girls alone) he just continued getting served. "Horrible" Last night me and four of my friends went to troopers for a few drinks around 11 at night. Went to the outside bar and deck in the back, a male and a female bar tending. Neither seemed to be into their jobs, and as bartenders I'd say that's pretty important. Anyways, long story short when i say "Put that drink on me" for someone else, it DOES NOT mean put everything else said person gets on my tab. As a bartender it is YOUR responsibility to divide checks and know what each person is drinking. So needless to say my boyfriend and I ended up with a $100 bar tab in two hours! When I asked the bartenders to please review this and make certain things separate, they messed everything up and were completely rude about it. Like they had no idea what each person was drinking??? I was a server for many years and honestly splitting a check three different ways isn't very hard. Especially at a bar that isn't even that busy. I guess due to their lack of attention to their customers, my boyfriend and I still ended up spending $100. Also, they closed out my credit card before I even tipped on it, so they told me changes couldn't be made???? Why would you close out a check before adjusting the tip? Do you like making your life more complicated by having to open a check back up just to add the tip to it? The computers really aren't that complicated. Also asked for equal pay, WHICH IS A BUTTON THAT SAYS EQUAL PAY, and was told no. In conclusion, I truly do love this bar, but the bartenders made it a terrible time for me. Great bar. Great food! It's the kind of bar where all the employees know your name when you walk through the door. There's a big outside patio and bar and a quaint traditional Irish bar inside. The owners are Scottish so there's a lot of authenticity here. During the college year they can get really busy with students on a Saturday but throughout the year it's a casual neighborhood bar with a solid draught selection. As someone who has lived in reading my whole life, troopers is definitely not a seedy dive bar. It's a well known, reputable, family owned business where you're treated like family. This is one of the better Irish Pubs in the area, they can be abut pricy with mixed drinks but the beer is priced perfectly. Alvernia is near by so there can be a younger crowd and it can get busy on weekends but if that's what you are looking for it is a great spot. Where it really shines though is outside on the patio, on a beautiful night it is great to have a few drinks and enjoy the fresh air. read more

I don't know what this Jen B is talking about. I am a middle aged woman and I frequent Troopers with my lady friends for late night drinks. This is a great, fun, and safe location. I know the bartender Amanda as she has served us many times and she is nothing short of a sweet and classy young lady. The beer selection is great and the place is VERY authentically Irish (I've actually been to Ireland) The accusation that Troopers is hateful or filled with drugs is 100% out of line! Met family there for dinner. I immediately noticed our server was "in the weeds". Ordered our drinks and as soon as they arrived ordered the appetizer, salads and our main courses. We never saw our initial server again. After our appetizer was delivered they served the main courses soon after. The server never checked in and apparently never submitted our salad orders. We had to chase someone down to cancel them. Again/ server never came to our table to check on us. So now it's time for dessert and I ordered the creme brûlée cheesecake. The busser (we had a few other gals assigned to our table I guess, but the server was not to be seen) brought said dessert and to me it looked like a NY style cheesecake so I questioned if it was the right thing. She took it back to the kitchen to double check. Next thing I know the phantom server returned with a slice of cheesecake identical to the first but about 1/4 of the size. When I questioned this she became defensive and said whenever you return something to the kitchen they have to throw it away and make new and the chef slices everything and that's just the way it is. She became belligerent and Argumentative. When I left the restaurant I felt anxious annoyed and just wanted to go home instead of feeling happy and ready to start the weekend. Great bartenders. Great location. Live music in the summer on the weekends. Covered deck. Feels kind of cramped inside that makes it hard to get around sometimes, though. There is always a longer line for the men's room than the women's room. read more

Had lunch with my family Aug. 12. Server was friendly & attentive. Hubby & I had the Burger of the Day and were treated to a large handmade burger cooked just right with plenty of fries. Wonderful visit. Nice Irish Pub feel complete with Irish items everywhere. Also had Irish group playing live music. I had heard good news about and now experienced for my first time 3/7/09. Menu items range from typical bars favorites to traditional Irish faire..I hear all homemade...and at fair prices. I am pleased to say my wife and I were both very pleased with our meals and our service. The food was priced appropriately and the atmosphere was pleasant in the upper dining area. I had the Crabby Patty with fries and the wife had the Steak Rafeal. Also little neck clams as an appatizer. All we felt were above average including the Asparagras spears that came with the entree. This place is a dumpy college bar. When the owner years ago actually worked the bar and kitchen, it was a respectable ace to take your family. They used to do mad carved roast beef sandwiches. Ate their for the first time in 3 years and it was sliced lunch meat dipped in gravy. Owner is checked out and just taking money from the 20 something crowd. Food sucks now. read more

I used to rant and rave about this place to everyone. The food is amazing, great beer selection, etc... It was the first place i wanted to go after I got home from Iraq both times! Unfortunately we then we had TWO bad experiences in a row. We asked for a manager and were told none was available. We then tried to call for a manager or owner, again conveniently no one was available. We then went to the website which was "under construction" and had no email address. We then went to their facebook page. It's 2014 and apparently they are the only business who doesn't check their facebook, because we couldn't get a response from them on there either. So we have now given up completely on the place, which is a shame because we did love it there so much. Our two bad experiences were only a few days apart..... the first bad experience we had, my girlfriend and I came by to get food and drinks, like we usually do twice a week. The bartenders all knew us pretty well as we had been going there about a year straight at this point. However, this time when i went to the bathroom, the bartender decided it would be a good idea to come around the bar, put his arm around my girl friend and slide his phone number in her pocket and tell her if she ever leaves me, he's always been interested. I came back to the table and of course she handed me the number and told me immediately what had happened. I swore it must have been a joke to be that ignorant, so i almost laughed in disbelief and continued our dinner. Halfway through our dinner she asked if i would grab her coat as it got cold in the back bar. When i got back from the car sure enough he was over there again asking her to breakfast the next morning and was refusing to take her no thank you as an answer. We immediately grabbed our check, didn't even finish our meals, and we left. The next time we came in, we decided to stay up front and not deal with him (Joe) at the back bar. We had Brain instead at the front bar who was amazing as usual. However, the place was packed and there was no where to sit. We found two seats at the bar, order food and drinks. Right as our food came out a bouncer tapped me on the shoulder and said we couldn't sit there because it was too close to the dj who was going to be there in an hour. That's right... in an hour!!! I said well there are no tables and our food just came, he told us we could stand and eat if we wanted but we had to move. So as we stood and tried to eat, which was very hard with scolding hot plates, the bouncer, and two of his friends who i'm assuming were just "hanging out" with him, decided to make a ton of inappropriate comments to my girlfriend as she ate. I turned around to ask them to please be respectful and they all looked around like oh who said something, we didn't say anything.... like we're all in 2nd grade now. Then she bent down to pick something up and again more comments. So now she turned around ans asked them to stop, same thing all over again oh it wasn't us hahaha.... We were just blown away by the unprofessionalism by the staff on these two occasions in the same week. It's very upsetting that not one manager or owner can return a call or message either. Second visit here two weeks ago...previous visit, no issues. Most recent trip, not so good. Father in law, brother and myself stopped in for a late lunch after a round of golf. Got a pint of Murphys, so far, so good. Order the Chicken sandwich that has the crab on top--it was recommended by the staff. Life is good. Eat most of the chicken before I realize the chicken breast was still pink (actually translucent) and extremely RAW on the inside. As the waitress comes to take our plates, I showed her the undercooked chicken still on my plate and tell her to inform the cook that he needs a mulligan on that one. Typically, if you go out to eat and you pay for food and the food is not what you expect (like your chicken fully cooked) the staff will comp you the entree. Not so fast. Not at Troopers. Not that day. Classless if you ask me. If raw chicken is allowed to leave the kitchen and then no one cares when you bring it to their attention, imagine what else is going on there. Since there isn't a ton going on in Reading PA I can't fault you for going to Troopers, just make sure you ask for your chicken Medium well:) read more

I don't ever write reviews but this still bothers me. I was here weeks ago and it pains me to give this place a star at all. I went there to spite this being a known spot for a young rowdy crowd. However I do love an Irish pub! True to what I heard there were no other women in the place.Also there was little that was Irish about the place, felt like a dive as the outside looks. My friend and I felt very uncomfortable with the crowd that was there. It was a rough place, not expected on a Sunday evening. We decided to sit at the bar and have one drink since we made the drive. They had a good selection of beers, but was not worth the rude service and horrible experience we had. I always like to get the name of the bartender when its crowded as not to be rude and have to yell. Her name was Amanda. She greeted us with a friendly smile but than was totally focused on joking around with friends outside the bar than actually tending to it. It took forever to get a drink. I'm a very open minded person however her attire was so inappropriate, I could actually see inside her shirt, not just cleavage. I felt as though we were being ignored because I was the only female outside of a woman nearby with her boyfriend and a girl at a seated table with her boyfriend. She seemed to be dressed for the male patrons for tips which was 98% of the place. The hooters girls wear less revealing tops! We only ordered one drink and in that one beer I was rubbed on by an old man 3 times, he was literally leaning into me and touching me, when I asked her to get security she said he was" harmless". This is a small but loud place so security was very close by and did nothing. while we hurried to finish our beers my friend and I (who happens to be gay) heard the man who checks I.D.s (security?) behind us and was talking to another coworker. He was a very tall large man with a long beard, did not get his name, and out of nowhere he literally yelled at the top of his lungs "I have AIDS!" I did not understand why this was being said and all I can assume is that it was directed towards my friend (gay stereotype) and there were 4 gay men in the corner dancing near the jukebox (it was apparent they were 2 couples).In addition I heard that person say gay slurs as well. I was so horrified I hurried to get my bill but had to wait on the bartender to stop chatting with her friends (they were clearly friends not regular patrons).However to my horror ( this is where someone actually needs to call bar rescue) her friend hands her an open large "sex toy" that she than takes and for a good 45 seconds-a minute simulates a sex act with it in between her breasts! I can see why there were men only there but what i witnessed would offend anyone with half a brain. I told this story to my friends when we left to go elsewhere and they told us that is normal behavior there and that women don't go there. They also mentioned the rough crowd that seemed out of place was due to cocaine being bought and used there. It appeared that a coworker or manager had witnessed this and told her to stop with the sex toy but she told him off so i'm not sure who was in charge, but was shocked to call a few days later and find that she still works there despite a manager or coworker having witnessed this. My friend left crying, I felt so awful having to hear those ugly things being said to patrons. I hope someone show the owner/management this review someday and I hope they feel ashamed of themselves. read more
