Awesome night at Trophy Fish last week. Wanted somewhere to go after Gasparilla that was different and wouldn't be a long wait. Trophy Fish is all open air, so it gives you a sense that you're on the beach or somewhere tropical!! Walked in and the manager greeted us and explained how it works. It's cafe style, so you pick a seat and just order your food at the bar, they will bring it out to you! We ended up eating at the bar and god some cocktails which were great. They had stone crab special so we did a half pound of that. Super good and served up with some old bay dusted on top! They rotate specials and fresh catch of the day so make sure to check the chalkboard when you walk in! For entree we had the mahi sandwich and the grouper day boat. Which you get to choose 2 sides and the fish of the day. We also got the seafood chowder which was made to order and so delicious. It was a bit on the pricey side, it was $29. I can't help it, I have to get their oysters. Their hushpuppies are a must. The shrimp tacos and catch of the day entrees are superb. You order your at the bar and staff is always cheerful and offering recommendations. You feel like you're 'somewhere else' with the tropical feel without a beach dive bar. If anything I would say go for a beer and chill outdoor vibes... that's it. It's an order at the counter kind of restaurant which I can totally understand but what I can't understand is a "self-service" restaurant with outrageous prices and this low quality of food. Food- We ordered a dozen oysters that were on special for $1 each. They were very very bad oysters... I only had 2. They didn't look visually appealing, were fishy, and had pieces of shell in them. The blackened mahi mahi was a small portion and the side pineapple cabbage slaw just tasted unfresh and like it had been sitting for a while. My boyfriend had the smoked shrimp burger and he did not enjoy it. The food did not justify the price. Drink- I also had the salty dawg yacht-tail and it was a unique drink. The smoked fish was ok not astounding and well I didn't like the ceviche at all...especially coming off the hinge of two trips to Mexico in the past month and comparing it to the amazing ceviche I did have. I've been excited to try Trophy Fish and what a great name because they definitely deserve a trophy. From the set up, to the service, to the menu, to the way that the food taste, it was simply an amazing, relaxing, dining experience. I loved the food, every bite felt like there was love in it, and I love the fact that his place is dog friendly. They even supply water and bowls for your furry love muffins. I brought mine and it was absolutely perfect. She had a great time. We ordered the fish of the day with the coconut rice and the coleslaw and every single bite was like eating a piece of heaven. Also had the shrimp burger, which was so yummy and the phone was buttery and sweet and I have no idea how they packed so much deliciousness into one meal. We also had the hush puppies which were so delicious and the dipping sauce that went with it was spectacular. My least favorite was the rosemary potatoes. They were just too huge and didn't have enough crunch that I would've liked in the absence of french fries. But everything was incredible and this is now my new favorite seafood spot in Tampa. Definitely a must try for a chill Sunday like we had or any day of the week really because there's never not a great day to have an amazing meal with fabulous service and excellent ambience. Long-time customers of the original location. I got a chance to visit the new Tampa location, and it has all the charm of the original. The new menu is different, I am sure a lot of people like it. One thing I loved about Trophy Fish as a Celiac is that I could get a really great blackened fish with rice and a side (sometimes vegetables or beans). I hope they bring that back because the new location didn't seem to have a lot of options to pair with the fish like rice, beans, etc. Their slaw is good, but it isn't something I would eat as a side. Another thing I noticed is that the seafood boil now has beer in it, and before it did not at the St. Pete location. So, as a Celiac, I can't order that anymore either. On my visit, I basically had to get a salad with fish. Grilled blackened fish salad is good, but as a more traditional meal, I do just prefer rice and a side, and I don't mean coconut rice or pilaf. Other than that, the new menu additions are obviously great for those with no dietary restrictions. The food is very consistent and tastes the same as it does at the St. Pete location. The cocktails are pretty much always 5/5 at TF. You won't be disappointed there. I am very glad we in Tampa have this gem. Anyhow, parking is probably always going to be tight because it is a residential area with businesses, but if the parking lot is full they have another small lot with parking across the street (it is easy to miss). If that fails, you can park on the street for free without risk of getting towed. Please bring back some of the great gluten-free options, though, for us Celiacs. I love seafood boils. read more

I was excited to try out this new restaurant and bar in town. The staff was very friendly and the decor was cool! We liked the bar area and tried the Gone Fishin drink. The drink was served in a ceramic bobber with a small fishing pole with a. Fish. I would order the drinks Avon! The seating and food set up left a lot to be desired. If you come with a party greater than 4 expect to find no seating for your whole group or very limited seating. The seating is a weird L shaped layout and there are indoor seats with not much airflow. The seating arrangements can use some rearranging. The food situation was not the most fluid ordering process. If you were at the bar enjoying drinks you had to leave the bar and potentially lose your seat at the bar to go and order food from a separate counter. There are separate areas to order food and drinks which can be problematic. There needs to be a better system for ordering food and drinks. The food menu was pricy and limited. Trophy Fish is know for fish but there were only two fresh fish options for the day. I expected more fish options since that is what they are known for. My party ordered the hush puppies, shrimp skewers, clams and corn, and fresh catch nuggets. The food was ok and not memorable. The hush puppies were big and had nice flavor but very also dry. The shrimp skewers came with a nice amount of shrimp but was not flavorful and over cooked. The clams from the clams and corn were very gritty. The crostinis that came with cams and corn were over toasted and hard as a rock. The fresh catch nuggets were fresh but super salty and way over seasoned. The sale and seasoning overpowered the fish. For the high prices charged for food the quality of the food was poor! Overall, I would go back for a drink and skip the food all together. As soon as we got there, we waited a good amount of time before having to go find someone to ask to be seated only to find out it was first come first serve. Trophy Fish moved into the empty place where Bodega Tampa used to fill our hearts and tummies. It was a bittersweet day for those living in the neighborhood. We loved Bodega, but COVID shutdowns led it back across the bay. It's hard to step into the exact same space and not compare, but we will try. Firstly, Trophy Fish got one thing super right- the space itself really needed a roof, and that's the first thing they added when they moved in. The roof changes the functionality completely. Firstly, on a hot day you can actually go and sit out there, enjoy the open-air patio, and not become the roasted chicken yourself. Secondly, on a day like yesterday, when it's raining, you can blissfully enjoy your fish sandwich without much affect. They also added an enormous bar that spans the entire space. The message is clear- we serve drinks. And the drinks are definitely worth serving. They actually give neighboring business Mandarin Heights a run for their money. Our original plan was to eat dinner at Trophy Fish, then head to Mandarin Heights, but after the drinks at TF, we decided to stay. The Mandarin drinks have always been slightly watery (in our opinion) and this was NOT the case for the strong and delicious drinks at TF. They also discounted their dark and stormy because it was raining, and that gets them some brownie points (in my opinion). As far as the food goes, I hate to say it- but I wish it was still Bodega. I know it's a completely different concept, but the food was mediocre. I had the blackened mahi fish tacos, and my husband had a fish platter. They were a little pricey, but that's hardly the issue. More so, they lacked downright deliciousness. My tacos were literally swimming in fish juice. The shells got soggy and fell apart quickly, leaving my ingredients in a puddle of juice. The taste was just okay. My husband ordered the chorizo creamed corn. It had a lot of chorizo grease, to the point where it looked like soup. It wasn't creamy at all. Nothing stood out as particularly outstanding. The yucca fries were gummy. The whole concept is great. I hope they can tweak their menu offerings a bit and improve the preparation. I think they stand a good chance of surviving in the Heights, especially because we are low on quality, outdoor lunch places- but I'm probably still going to be sitting there wishing I could be ordering the lechón sandwich of pre-COVID Bodega. read more
