This is a place to be avoided like the plague. Granted pet stores have an aroma to them, but this aroma is far beyond a horrible stench. Just looking at the animals, you can see they are not well taken care of. When I spotted a mouse running around an employee told me "I guess another feeder got loose" and laughed. Great way to run a business and way to hire eighth grade graduates as employees. STAY AWAY !!! read more

This place sucks. Both pets I got from here were sick. The vet bill was over $1000. When I spoke to the owner about my ill rabbit and if I returned him would they treat him, he said they would just use him as snake food if I brought him back. Giving this place money is supporting animal neglect and sending a message that this abuse is okay. There's countless other interactions I had with staff that shows they don't have the animals interest in mind. One employee was telling me they only change the rabbit cage every few weeks, when there's at least 20 rabbits in there. Another time I asked the employee why the bearded dragon heat lamp was off and he was like "oh I forgot to turn it on today". Also the way they keep the feeder rats is disgusting. All animals even feeders deserve care (also if the feeder is sick it could make your snake sick). Lastly, there's always cockroaches running around the store. If you need reptiles/supplies go to Ever Evolving Exotics, they are cleaner and their animals are healthier. If you need rabbits, dogs or cats, go to the Humane Society of Southern AZ If you want parrots, visit the parrot sanctuary and adopt one. There are other options. read more

I made a special day trip to this pet store for a hermit crab. First of all, the store is filthy. I realize pet stores have a smell but the entire store showed signs of old dirt and lack of basic upkeep and cleaning; dust, debris and dead crickets widespread, just built-up filth. Anyway, we picked out a hermit crab by choosing the shell we liked. I asked to hold the hermit crab and was told I couldn't because they bite and it would cause me to "scream bloody murder". I asked if it was alive as I had a little doubt. The guy turned the shell over and pushed the hermit crab deeper into the shell and told me it was alive. I reached out to take the hermit crab in my hand and I was told that he was required to package it and not handle it until we were home. My bad for listening to this ignorance. The hermit crab WAS dead and my little boy got home to a dead pet plus extra shells, feed, etc. This was nearly an hour drive to get the dead crab. The manager told me I would need to return the dead crab for a refund. Instead of wasting $10 in gas and two hours to go back and deal with the ingrates I will advise others to avoid this place. There's nothing at this store you can't buy from a more reputable pet store. Save your money. There are cheaper ways to make your kid cry. Maybe tell them that you're going to Disneyland and drive them to a burned down building and tell them that Disneyland burned down. Or come here and buy them a dead pet that they've saved up for. Great place to go If you want to be around anti masker, dead animal, and stench. Went in recently looking for cherry shrimp and none of the employees were masked. Many of the tanks were full of dead fish as well. It's sad to see a small business disregard the safety of our community. read more

After getting a couple things at Safeway next door, I noticed this place. I stopped in because I am an avid fish keeper, and always love looking at pet store stock. Even before entering the second set of doors I smelt the stench, this place seriously made me gag. Seeing as they sold birds, reptiles, and little mammals i chalked the stink up to that, and decided to work my way to the fish section. Getting there and walking along the wall(they do have a ton of stock tanks) I found that every other tank was a solid green cloud, prices were very expensive, and most fish looked very sickly and there were dead fish in almost as many tanks. One tank especially caught my eye, This one, a green cloud like the others, had South American Albino Oscars in it. They were priced 19.99 per fish, and they were all dead. I'm not talking 1 or 2, the whole tank was dead, lying on their side motionless in the tank. I was then approached by a member of the staff asking if I needed help with anything, I wanted to say "sure some live healthy fish", but I decided against that and asked about their substrate aquarium gravel, he didn't have what I was looking for and said I might have better luck at Arizona Nature Aquatics if I wanted to do a planted tank. I cannot speak for the other parts of the store because after I saw these things I left empty handed, and can honestly say I won't be back. I'm sorry Tropical Kingdom but you need to take better care of your stock or you may as well not keep fish because nobody is going to buy them dead. read more

This place is less then okay. Their parrots, which hang out in the store, are cool, but their feathers look tattered as if they were malnourished or abused. C'mon, can it be that hard to maintain good bird health? I'm sure it might be but your supposed to show me that. The Prices are the worst of all the exotic pet stores, I went to a few others afterwards and figured i overpaid by 20% on my items, overall. One item in particular was a complete 100% more here. I paid 24 bucks for a cage i saw later for 12 dollars. SAD. That's kinda ridiculous. The staff is somewhat knowledgeable but they are not enthusiastic to help you. I think all pet stores should have a healthy and positive attitude towards pet ownership and helping customers to be informed about their animals. Just me I guess. I noticed two things when I walked into Tropical Kingdom: 1) Pungent odor of small animal urine (they have rabbits and guinea pigs in a walled off area) 2) Macaws (parrots) hanging out in the middle of the store. I admit that the macaws are pretty cool, but that does not make up for the unfriendly exchange I had with an employee about freshwater plants, nor does it make up for their way overpriced merchandise. read more

Although the staff is friendly and the animals never cease to amaze, I would strongly advise not purchasing your pets here. I adopted a kitten a few weeks ago that came with a free bonus, A FLEA INFESTATION. I am currently still battling this terrible gang of bugs which is now affecting my poor dog as well, already hundreds of dollars down the drain on medications and house treatments. Definitely NOT worth the trouble, but I wouldn't feel right sending the poor kitty back to live in that filthy place. Update: My pets have been flea free their whole lives, the kitten was filthy when we got her (grimy to the touch) and was indeed the cause of our flea infection. Buy your furry friends elsewhere. I have no comment for the rest of their pets/services, but I can tell you they did not properly care for our kitten. Thankfully she is clean and healthy and far from that place now. read more

On Monday March 22 2021 I called this pet store to ask if they had the red cherry plant for my fresh water aquarium. A lady answered the call and told me that they do have it and that it costs $4.99 and then I asked the lady if she can pick 3 for me and get them ready for me to pick them up. I drove for about 30 minutes and to my surprise they did not have any. So I went to the cashier and asked them about the plants and that I have made a call for three of them. A gentleman that works there told me "I don't know who you called" and drove back home empty handed for another 30 minutes without even an apology for wasting my time. The employees there do not care to check if they have what you ask for or they just assume they do and will tell you "yes we have it!!" On the phone. Don't be fooled by the player haters this is a good local business! Yes there is a smell when u go in but what pet store doesn't? Petco/Mart both have huge buildings that allow the smell to be a little less intense, it just keeps me from looking at animals I can't afford. If you can get over the smell you are halfway there, I don't have a big problem with that. I needed a particular type of pump, and they had it at a reasonable price. My family has been using Tropical Kingdom for our fresh and saltwater needs for over five years. The staff, contrary to what other reviews say, is knowledgeable and quite helpful. I'm always greeted on entering the store and if I need help with anything, like getting a fish from a tank, there is usually an employee on hand in the immediate vicinity. It's nice being able to get reliable advice on pet needs from the multiple department managers, as you just can't always count on that at larger, chain pet stores. The owner and the head management are almost, if not always in the store, and are always willing to go the distance to help out both new and returning customers. And for regulars, it's always nice being received on a first name basis. Tropical Kingdom will continue to get my patronage for years to come. read more

The doors and door handles are not clean and you can tell there is little to no sanitation going on. We recently purchased a gecko for my son. After having him for 2 days, something went severely wrong with the little guy, or so we though, so we took him back and spoke with, I think, the manager. The store offered to take our gecko for a few days and put him in seclusion to monitor him. After a few days we called and they said the little guy was fine and eating well, so we went back to pick him up. We decided he was probably too cold in our house so we purchased a warmer bulb...things seem to be going well. I was grateful at the stores response and their willingness to monitor the gecko for us, especially since we know nothing about them...honestly I was getting a shovel ready for burial; it was that bad. I'm incredibly happy with the service but a little dirty...what do you expect with that many creatures in one place!! read more

This is a pretty cool pet store just to go in and look around. The first thing you see when you walk through the door is a giant bird display with Macaws and Cockatoos that are not caged. They had a lot of cool looking birds that the employees would let you hold if you asked them. They also had a display tank for some adult Burmese Pythons in one corner of the store that was a pretty good set up. It also allows perspective snake owners to see how big an enclosure a burmese/retic/anaconda will need as an adult. They had a great selection of salt and freshwater fish, including the ones that most interest me, fish that don't look like fish. The fish looked healthy and the tanks looked clean, which is more than can be said about the other fish store I went to in Tucson. Most importantly, they had a large amount and diverse selection of reptiles. Specifically they had a good looking adult Meller's Chameleon and some skinks I hadn't seen before. Their reptile products were fairly priced and they had all the basics. They do sell dogs at this location for those who care about that sort of thing. I visited tropical kingdom on a hunt for a feeder lizard for one of my snakes. I was not very impressed. The store is large, and they do carry a large variety of supplies for reptiles, small animals, fish etc. The prices seemed reasonable on these items, and they do have probably the largest selection of bird products that we've found in Tucson (although they could still have more). What did not impress me was the care of the animals. While I didn't see any dead fish as another reviewer mentioned, many of the tanks were a bit dirtier than they should have been (not absolutely disgusting but it certainly didn't look good to me, the customer). The reptiles also were in fairly small tanks/enclosures although all appeared to be in good health. I understand that this is a temporary home for such animals, however I feel they need to put some money into their display tanks/cages both for the animals sake and because it would help to sell them! They were a bit higher priced on animals than a few other places in town. I haven't purchased feeders here other than the one lizard but I have heard that their prices are ok. The big bird play area in the middle of the store is pretty cool and the three or four large birds that call it home seem to really enjoy running around and playing on it. It also, however, needs to be cleaned a bit more often. There was a good layer of bird droppings on the floor. The birds seemed pretty happy though which is a plus and its neat to be able to interact with them. One thing I do really like about this store is the giant snake rooms for the burmese pythons. These snakes are huge and require a lot of space, and they have an entire back corner/room with sliding glass doors set up for them. Its a very nice set up for the large snakes which can be hard to keep. As to the smell mentioned by another reviewer, there was a bit of an odor when I entered although it wasn't unbearable. The building is large enough that with a little more regular cleaning of the animals it would be easy to keep smelling great. read more

Firstly, their feeder selection is vast and very reasonably priced, as well as healthy. The feeder fish I purchase from Tropical Kingdom will survive indefinitely as compared to the couple of days I get from the chain pet stores in my area. Secondly, every time I have visited the staff has been very helpful and knowledgeable of their pets and products. True, sometimes they may be a little lax on their uppity greetings, but it's the type of semi-informal environment that leads to conversations about pets and new information on how to care for them. Lastly, I haven't seen a single ridiculously over-priced item in any of my visits since I have moved to Tucson. There may be plenty of items in the small mammal/cat/dog sections that I am not aware of (I am a reptile owner), but what's wrong with spending a few extra dollars to support local business? Additionally, the owners/managers of the store are there most of the time, why not try negotiating if you know you can get something cheaper elsewhere? I love this store, and compared to the awful condition of reptiles at the Reptile Specialists, I consider it an excellent selection as far as non-corporate pet solutions go. read more

I am a steady customer and I enjoy seeing John and the other regulars who are always very helpful. I've purchased some very healthy animals there over the years. TK has lots of pet supplies. It bums me out that they put 2000+ dollar birds on layaway.. I've seen this good natured cockatoo on layaway here for over a month now, and I've watched it go from happy looking to depressed. The first day the bird got to the shop I was there around 2pm and he was already on layaway.. it's just sad and I wasn't allowed to buy him right then and there. Like, if a bird gets to the shop they don't have a grace period where you can't do layaways or something so people that can actually afford the bird and want to take them home can do so? I'm sure if it wasn't me, there would have been plenty of people that would have bought that bird by now as well. The cockatoo could have been living with me a month ago, instead it's in the shop looking depressed for 2 months straight while someone that can't really afford the bird is making monthly installments.. then you have to wonder if they can't afford the bird, can they afford a proper size cage , toys, etc. then you realize he will probably be another rehome in a few years. Oh well nothing you can do, it just makes me sad to go to this store. They don't have much to buy in the bird market and a lot of the birds they do have are on layaway just sitting there. We were in today to see all the animals based on a referral from a coworker. I was very disappointed. While walking around we spotted two dead lizards that appeared to be dead for a while. One fish tank was full of at least a dozen dead fish and there were several dead cockroaches throughout the store. The enclosures were very dirty, covered in poop and it saddened me greatly to see the animals living in these conditions. read more

Passing the big box corporate pet stores in order to patronage our local stores. We recently purchased some bark for our turtle & the sales associate at the counter was soooo rude. He acted as if our purchase was an inconvenience to him. We felt disrespectfed and unappreciated as loyal customers. We decided to go to another store to finish buying the rest of our needs. We drive past a minimum of 7 other pet stores just to come in here for our needs and to be treated badly, is not alright. I've been coming here for a couple years now. I love everything about the shop but I didn't have much communication with the staff until today. I bought a tortoise that turned out being very sick. I had thought I did something wrong... wrong habitat, wrong bedding... the manager helped me through my grieving and explained that I had did nothing wrong, that these things happen. These people that work here truly love all animals and wouldn't do anything to put any of them in harm. I came by the store to get clarity and the manager gave me more-a credit towards another baby tortoise and an ease at mind. Although I was not expecting a credit, it's nice to know that the staff truly cares for their customers. If you ever have a bad experience here, let the staff help you before coming on review sites. Unfortunately I didn't see a lot of proper care in the inclosures for a lot of the animals. The bab th axolotls were already having terrible impact in their bellies from being in substrate. Baby axolotls should only be on barebottom tanks until they are fully grown than they can be moved to a fine substrate (NEVER GRAVEL) the birds I felt bad for were in an enclosure meant for rodents and were having trouble walking around on nothing but bird seed. The employees didn't care for the amount of customers they were having and were just eating away as if they were on lunch in front of the customers..it was very unprofessional. I felt very bad for the condition of a lot of animals. I also dont condone pet shops that acquire wild caught animals for the benefit of making sales. I dont see how this pet shop has such good reviews I'm ashamed in our pet community here. read more

I have been a customer for years. I love the great customer service, I always get !!! An "Awesome" place to shop !!!! I take 2 buses just to get there, even though there are other pet stores closer. It's worth the extra time and effort. Today: 10/10/2018 Wednesday; I met an a new employee named Clifford. Clifford was very kind, outgoing and was willing to go that extra mile. DO NOT BUY PET RATS FROM HERE!! I recently bought 2 pet rats from here, about 2 weeks later one is making a strange cough noise. I then took them to the vet and learned they have very bad respiratory problems, the medal care for them has cost me around $400. I have adopted two rabbits from here a year apart and both died. I am a very experienced rabbit owner and I volunteer with different rabbit rescues. I have two rabbits currently that I rescued from a shelter that are healthy as can be, yet every time I try to save a rabbit from here they die within weeks. Both times the bunnies were only weeks old and had seizures. This can be caused by an extremely unhealthy pet store environment. For instance, keeping the bunnies with the Guinea pigs is cruel, inhumane and spreads illnesses such as this. With my first rabbit they sold me a cage that was WAY too small, the wrong food (it had seeds, rabbits don't eat seeds) the wrong hay, and a salt lick which dehydrated bunnies. Rabbits need a large enclosure like an exercise pen, pellets, alfalfa hay if a baby, Timothy or orchard grass if over 6 months, fresh greens, a BOWL for water NOT a bottle! All details this pet store gets COMPLETELY WRONG and it is DEADLY to your rabbit. Rabbits should live 8-12 years, ones from here live less than 3 months. If you are going to continue to sell rabbits, please be more humane about it. Keep them in their own enclosure. Feed them the right food and the right hay. And make sure you sell individuals the proper exercise pen, litter box, bowls, etc. Watching my baby rabbit die in my hands knowing I did everything I could absolutely broke my heart, stop doing this to people. read more

This is your spot to find all the pets you ever wanted as a kid, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, a few dogs and lots of fresh and salt water fishes. I want to understand and be considerate of how hard this job must be. That said, if it was this hard why did you make THIS your business. People who buy animals as pets or food aren't blind. I've been there a handful of times and seen the same dead fish in the same tank. Walking in you feel excited by all the interesting lives there and then immediately sick with the death their surrounded by. Encourage your employees to do research of their own, be an example of the tenderness, awe and intellect that comes with allowing life to find comfort in humans. I half want to work their just because I see a need to fill and want to learn and help, and I'm half horrified at the people that do work there and how depressing it must be. Is this really just a business? I'm not trying to judge you guys or be hurtful, I just wonder what makes your store valuable, decent or honest. I don't just want pets or admire their existence, I want knowledge, an example of integrity, and a worth that's seen not said (in the things we value in life and not just our lives). Please consider hiring a couple professional to help you kept the environment you've built healthy and prosperous. I know times are hard right now, and good things don't always happen with good practice, but the good that comes from people is such an essential act that last longer then the money you make before dying. Again no intentionally hurtful judgement, just food for thought and the experience of another human. I wil still go to your store because change isn't immediate, and I understand that human life should be valued most of all. I don't want to be apart of what affects your lives, but I can't say I will go here long. It really does make me sad, but I hope to see a small flicker of value and hope in the lives that relay on you. read more
