I then took them to the vet and learned they have very bad respiratory problems, the medal care for them has cost me around $400. The staff has always been friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There is a bit of a smell, but all and all they have quality products that I like to buy. I have adopted two rabbits from here a year apart and both died. I am a very experienced rabbit owner and I volunteer with different rabbit rescues. I have two rabbits currently that I rescued from a shelter that are healthy as can be, yet every time I try to save a rabbit from here they die within weeks. Both times the bunnies were only weeks old and had seizures. This can be caused by an extremely unhealthy pet store environment. For instance, keeping the bunnies with the Guinea pigs is cruel, inhumane and spreads illnesses such as this. With my first rabbit they sold me a cage that was WAY too small, the wrong food (it had seeds, rabbits don't eat seeds) the wrong hay, and a salt lick which dehydrated bunnies. Rabbits need a large enclosure like an exercise pen, pellets, alfalfa hay if a baby, Timothy or orchard grass if over 6 months, fresh greens, a BOWL for water NOT a bottle! All details this pet store gets COMPLETELY WRONG and it is DEADLY to your rabbit. Rabbits should live 8-12 years, ones from here live less than 3 months. If you are going to continue to sell rabbits, please be more humane about it. Keep them in their own enclosure. Feed them the right food and the right hay. And make sure you sell individuals the proper exercise pen, litter box, bowls, etc. Watching my baby rabbit die in my hands knowing I did everything I could absolutely broke my heart, stop doing this to people. read more

I want to understand and be considerate of how hard this job must be. That said, if it was this hard why did you make THIS your business. People who buy animals as pets or food aren't blind. I've been there a handful of times and seen the same dead fish in the same tank. Walking in you feel excited by all the interesting lives there and then immediately sick with the death their surrounded by. Encourage your employees to do research of their own, be an example of the tenderness, awe and intellect that comes with allowing life to find comfort in humans. I half want to work their just because I see a need to fill and want to learn and help, and I'm half horrified at the people that do work there and how depressing it must be. Is this really just a business? I'm not trying to judge you guys or be hurtful, I just wonder what makes your store valuable, decent or honest. I don't just want pets or admire their existence, I want knowledge, an example of integrity, and a worth that's seen not said (in the things we value in life and not just our lives). Please consider hiring a couple professional to help you kept the environment you've built healthy and prosperous. I know times are hard right now, and good things don't always happen with good practice, but the good that comes from people is such an essential act that last longer then the money you make before dying. Again no intentionally hurtful judgement, just food for thought and the experience of another human. I wil still go to your store because change isn't immediate, and I understand that human life should be valued most of all. I don't want to be apart of what affects your lives, but I can't say I will go here long. Do not support people who treat animals like this. The poor little albino Burmese python in the back corner COMPLETELY covered in mites. They were all over her, under her scales, the poor thing. And not like they'd notice, as they all sat at the front of the store socializing. I walked around for twenty minutes and not one person asked if I needed help. Brought my two small kids here with me to look at different habitat kits for our pet. After browsing around for a good 45mins looking at all of the items that they have to offer and ready to spend some money there on what I had picked out I walked around looking for someone to help as nobody had any type of name badge or T-shirt that helps identify them as staff. After asking one girl who was walking around I had found another by the where the reptiles are coming out of the middle area(where I see a name badge hanging up nobody wearing it) I ask her if she's able to help me price some items out and possibly build a bundle deal. I was told that what is out there is the price since "margins are so low" fair enough. I had shopped around online while at the store and they really didn't have bad prices, sure they were about $5-8 higher than the competitors but it's a small business and I can have the instant gratification of having the item now rather than go to another store or order online so I figured alright might as well just get everything here. So after looking again for another 25 mins I find what I want. I get up to the register and tell them that I would like the deal that is posted on the sign on the side of the tank in the tank section that says "$49.99 nocturnal lizard kit" the guy then says that "those sales were for the reptile show and we can't sell it for that price anymore" the reptile shows were over 2 weeks ago. So you mean to tell me that you have not sold one single kit or had an inquiry about those in the roughly 18 days that the reptile show has been over for ? Yeah right. So then I tell him " it's posted on the sign right over there, can you please honor this deal?" and they continue to hold firm that they were not going to honor the posted price. So be it, went happy to the next closest pet shop "Ken the big guy" and found the only pet shop I will ever need again. Check them out and you will see the difference. On the way out my kids were wondering why we left without buying a habitat for our new friend, I had told them not to worry we would be going to local chain pet store to make our purchase as I was leaving the guy who was working was talking tough and acting like he was slick cuz he didn't sell me the kit. Well I got what I wanted, my kids got what the wanted, another business got what they wanted, seems the only one here that got the short end of the stick was your shop as I will never be back and am going to be sure to post this on all platforms. I bought a turtle there a couple of years ago. I asked them if they could take it back because it started attacking one of my other turtles. The manager said sure, grabbed it from the box, and said, OK, we're good, and off he went. Just another way of saying, I'll take it, but don't expect anything in return. I know they're in business to make a profit, but I did at the least expect a little store credit, which I would have applied towards a larger purchase. Just seems like a good business practice to me. This is a nice shop run by very friendly staff. It always smells and looks clean. The day I was there they were cleaning the area with crickets and worms and getting a fresh batch the next day. This is a horrible environment for animals. If the odor doesn't convince you then their uncleaned tanks will. Everything is also overly expensive when compared to any other pet store next to it. While they're willing to take unwanted fish, they just simply throw them into a tank like they don't comprehend what's a temperature shock, something that commonly kills fish. I don't even wanna get started with the rats in the backroom, no animal should be handled in such a way whether it's being used as food or not. If you think this is a decent temporary living environment for a living animal than you shouldn't have a pet to begin with. Edit: Two years later, still the same thing. Clearly they're doing NOTHING to change their disgusting environment, best to avoid. The aquarium isle is horrific, if they don't know how to maintain fish, they need to stop selling them. At first this store could do no wrong. It seemed like they knew their stuff and we fell in love with a gold-capped conure that we decided to buy after multiple visits. After I took her to the vet we learned quite a few unsavory things. Tropical Kingdom told us that she was 4 months old and the avian vet said that there was no way that was possible and she is closer to 2/3 years old easy. Her beak was overgrown considerably along with her claws. She was on an all seed diet which anybody worth their salt knows is horrible for a bird. Her cage was tiny and barely had any toys at all for her to play with. If you take a close look at their birds you can tell that they are not well taken care of except for the ones that practically live outside their cage in their playground. Overall we still love our little bird even with her deformed growth-plate beak which will always over grow (which they didn't bother to tell us about) but we will not be spending anymore money or supporting this store again. read more

I go there all the time to get all my birds and everything from crickets, bunnies, fish and others. They are very helpful with giving you facts on a pet. I have seen reviews about odor but considering they have 100+ animals living there they do great. Another thing is people have problems with some animals conditions, many are brought in from being abused and they do amazing at giving them a good life while in their care, there is no reason to think they are neglected, this is better then a petsmart and you should realize that. read more

I've been in there twice the first time I saw a dead lizard and the second I saw Russian tortoises with a "dry-to-the-bone" watering bowl. First I'll say this is a review of their phone service, I havent actually been to their store. Background: I have a rat litter that lost their mom and I was calling around to see if anyone had nursing mothers I could buy. I had never had any interaction with Tropical Kingdom before so I had no idea if they even had rats. So obviously my first question was asking if they sold rats, there's many ways their reply could have been worded with different tones, but the condescending 'uh, yeah, we do' was not one I would have used. I ask if they have any nursing mothers and explain that I have a motherless litter. Yes they do have nursing mothers. I ask for a price and am met with a borderline hostile "I'm not going to sell you one of my breeders." Well after me asking if you SELL rats and then asking about nursing mothers I would have assumed you had gathered I was interested in buying one. But I'm welcome to bring them in to give them to you for free so you can sell them off later. Mhmm, like I'll ever be coming to this store in person. And Tropical Kingdom, don't bother commenting on how I misunderstood your tone or there was miscommunication. I work in customer service and there was nothing professional about how I was spoken to. You'll be happy to know I was given a nursing mother rat and the babies are doing just fine. read more

I have been going to Tropical Kingdom for 6 years. I bought my first snake here and then numerous reptiles over the years. Now I'm not too big into reptiles any more and only have my rosy boa which I got from here. I got into birds and have purchased 2 cockatiels, an Indian Ringneck, and a Quaker Parrot, and will be going to get my husband a Pineapple Conure from here. My birds were hand fed. Actually when I decided to get my IRN she was still being hand fed and I was able to go up there and learn how to hand feed her before taking her home. Everyone is always nice to me and very helpful. I actually like going up there and hanging out and talking to everyone. I love the bird island and I'm trying to do something similar in my spare room for my birds. It's a great idea so the birds have the ability to stretch their wings, ask for pets if they want them, and play with each other. They have puppies and kittens that come from local breeders (I've been up there when the breeders brought some in) and are kept in a separate room. This is great because it cuts down on them getting sick while they are waiting for their new home. They have their rabbits out so you can play with them but I try not to go near it too much (I'm allergic). Their reptiles are properly cared for unlike the tortoises at Petsmart (who feed them colorful pellets and not fresh produce). I have seen people complain about it smelling but I don't think it does. You can't use air fresheners in a pet store because it's dangerous to the animals so it's not going to smell like glade or something. The new discount room is really nice to check out. All their animals are taken care of and are reasonably priced. If you need advice about any animal you are thinking about getting the people who work there actually know and give great information. This is a great store and I go there to get everything my pets need and to get new pets. Also for the people who are saying things about fish and Ich. People who understand how fish operate know that fish are fragile and when removing them from their ecosystem and transporting them stresses a fish out and by the time they arrive at a store they are under stress which can lead to Ich or even death. However, if you politely tell someone that you saw a fish dead or with Ich they will take care of it either by removing the fish or treating the tank and putting NFS on it until the Ich is cleared up. read more

I was not very impressed with this store. Sure there were lots of interesting reptiles to look at, but the care of these animals were not the best. Too many animals to keep up with, the birds smelt awful, the fish tanks were so green I could not even see the fish, and of course the smell of the whole place. Are you kidding me with the ferret enclosure, one little quartered off section for a ferret, the rabbits looked stressed, just a horrible environment You need to hire some more employees to clean and care for your living creatures. I'm a fish hobbyist, although I've been told I have a problem with keeping too many tanks... but that's besides the point. I love the variety here. Their fish are amazing, and if you love animals, then you can't help but feel like a kid in this place and stop to stare at everything! I've bought several species of fish here, my favorites being my little puffers guys, Fugu and Eight. The staff are always helpful, and go out of their way to provide you with any info on the animals. I wouldn't shop elsewhere for my aquarium fish, because quite frankly, the fish are very healthy, and don't look like they're about to drop dead like some pet store fish..lol. read more

I have not had many experiences with Tropical Kingdom, but the experience I had was very good. After discovering both Petco and Petmart had stopped selling rats(which I was very disappointed, as I had been loyal Petco shopper for all of my pet supplies) I looked all over for place that sold rats. I spent half the day online looking for a new pet store to shop at, and after a long time I stumbled across Tropical Kingdom. I immediately headed over to the store met some very helpful staff who directed me to the back of the store where they keep their small animals. They showed me their rats and I got and absolutely adorable and sweet dumbo blue agouti male. Their setup wasn't optimal for rats, and there was a little overcrowding and they seemed to be afraid of humans, though not aggressive. But I understand that they are selling these rats for feeders and they are not worrying about their rats being socialized. read more

Never went into a place where everyone knew so little about the fish they were selling . My niece had a fish tank and we upgraded to a much bigger tank she only had 2 goldfish but wanted different fish as well. After talking to 2 people and having them " talk to the owner" they all agreed that NO fish can live with goldfish and if I bought anything else they would die . So expecting them to know more than me since they work /own the place I decided to buy more goldfish , got 10 of them and some were black or had black spots, asked if it was normal or if they were sick " I heard about ick " and was responded with oh no they are fine and healthy. Fast forward 1 week my 2 original fish were half black and 6 of the 10 I had bought were dead, took to pets mart and guess what they were diseased , 2 weeks later with their help got the rest cleared up and back to being healthy ....and now have a tank with MULTIPLE kinds of fish living happily together for over 4 months..Never will go back to tropical kingdom . read more

If you like loud rock music on cheap speakers, and can handle the constant eye-burning stench from the racks of feeder rodents coming from the back room, you're halfway there. They are a parrot and rarer bird store, and have a large selection of reptiles. It seems they should stick to the birds and reptiles though, as the fresh and salt fish are sickly and the freshwater are double the cost of other stores. The saltwater fish are reasonably priced but not healthy. The rodents and bunnies are well cared for. The dry goods are priced higher than the two big box pet store franchises in town. At least the elderly man who is the senior owner doesn't sit up front at the register and yell G-- D--- anymore! And they got rid of their huge screen of spy cameras behind the counter, so that's more pleasant. This is a good store for college kids to shop at who have a lot of money. Oh, and they will give you store credit for your used pet supplies (cages, aquariums, plastic dog kennels, filters) for their used department. read more

DO NOT SHOP AT THIS PET STORE! I was told by many people to avoid this shop but they had a specific pet that wasn't being sold anywhere else in town. I had no problem with the employees there. They were kind and helpful but the problem was the manager. He was inconsistent and got angry when I asked if I could bring my animal to the vet to make sure they were healthy. My mom is a veterinarian and I know many horror stories that can happen when buying a new pet, so I just wanted to be safe. My boyfriend and I were told many times that we could return the pet if we weren't happy. We ended up wanting to return it but when we walking in (less than 24 hours after we bought it) we were treated terribly and told there were no returns. To be fair it did say that on the receipt but as a customer I believe we should be informed by the MANAGER correctly when we purchased our item. I have lost over $300 from this shop. I recently moved in the area and had been going to a different location to get my few rats every week as the usual for my snakes. Though I was wanting a bit more than what was offered to me I looked around and found Tropical Kingdom. My girlfriend and I both were impressed with the quantity and quality of the animals and feeders they have to offer. After my first visit a week ago for feeders I knew I'd be back. Today came, and as on every tuesday we get our rats. We were provided with the same professional and amazing support of the staff, who not only went out of her way to get us the rats we needed, but also took the time to show us the Black & White King Snakes they had on display. I had been wanting one for ages and now with not only one, but two healthy and vibrant choices in my hands I knew it was a done deal. The story does not end there, as my GF and I were getting the supplies needed for a new setup for the King we had noticed that ExoTerra offered a complete setup. The same staff, whose name I can not recall sadly, went above and beyond to actually get the tank w/ setup from the floor and bring it to the register. We both agreed that this is the type of business that we want to associate ourselves with going into the future. Thanks for all the help! read more

Well at first I thought this place was gonna be the go to store.. NOT ANYMORE. I have bought a lot of pets from them because I collect them. When I went to go get a species I've been wanting I found it dead in its enclosure, tried to tell me it was perfectly fine and it was molting but no it was dead. 3 other species I've bought have been ID'd wrong. I went in there the other day because we called them to see if they had a fish that we have been looking for. It took them 45 minutes before we received help from them. We got two ram cichlid's brought them home and quarantined them. One of them died three days later at like 9 pm. At that point it was way to late to return him. We called the next day to see if they would except the return and they didn't. The warranty on their fish is only 3 days. We are never going there again. This was my first time in the store and I'm sorry I went. Wanted to see their tropical fish selection and maybe make a purchase. The stench was so strong it made my eyes water and I could hardly breath. I had to leave the store. This can't be good for the animals nor the humans in the store. Called the store manager who told me it was rodent urine and it always smells to varying degrees. They usually open the doors to help air it out (yea, well what about at night when all those animals are locked up in there). I asked how often the bedding/litter was changed and she said at least once a week. Wow, if my personal hamsters/cavies/rabbits smelled this way their cages would be changed every day. So So sad and needless to say I will never go back and will also tell all my friends not to go there. How they stay in business is beyond me. read more

The last time I was in Tropical Kingdom will be my last. For many reasons, first.. Their kittens, they accept "donations" of kittens and then try to sell them for $70-$130. When I asked about them, they had no idea where they had come from and they had NO idea whether they had FiV or FeV. Two very contagious and deadly cat sicknesses. They have not given them any vaccinations nor are they spayed/neutered. Second, after speaking with a not so knowledgeable sales associate about the kittens, I was walking around the store and found not one but TWO dead exotic frogs in their tank. Let me just tell you my experiEnce: about two years ago I purchased a rat for a pet, one of the other workers killed the rats I front of me, not only could he have waited but I saw the blood and everything it was so unprofessional I wasn't even there for long. Would it kill them to wait 5 minutes until I have gotten out the store?! Wtf! They could have gone to another room or something at least! Another time I wanted to see an animal the employee said "you can see it if you buy it" and walked off without another word.. RUDE! So I let it go, and walked off to see the fishes where the tanks were green, cloudy water, and a TONS of dead fish. Every visit to the store I see everyone just sitting at the front talking to each other and I feel like crap interrupting them even after their rude as heck. I will never go there again in my life and I will be sure to spread the word of how just terrible the store is! Btw I've seen the ""Arizona Nature Aquatic"" store! It's by far the best fish store I've ever seen in my life! They're tanks are crystal clear, no dead fishes and they look really healthy.
