It was my first time trying this out. My boyfriend normally eats here & told me that the food is good but I was very DISAPPOINTED. I ordered the Cedar Plank Salmon with Mashed potatoes, it was very watery (per the below image) and just not good. I asked for it to be cooked well IT WAS BASICALLY UNDERCOOKED. The sauce drenched the mashed potatoes as well as the salmon, and when I called to complain about my meal the manager Gabby had an attitude and didn't seem to care & said "thats how we make it". This is our second time at this place. Service was great! The food was very tasty. Mac and Cheese, burnt ends, slaw, sweet potato soufflé, 1/2 slab of baby back ribs, brisket, penne pasta surf and turf. ALL of the dishes were delicious. The ambiance in the room was nice and seating is roomy. It allowed for good conversation. We sat at a huge booth --it was comfy. There is also an area outside with fire pits. The Big Ginger Mule is on point, I added a twist with Crown Royal XO instead of the whiskey that came with it. Magnificent! Also tried the very berry- Raspberry Lemonade, it was good too! Nice place in Griffith, Indiana. Nice drink selections and good food. The Brussels sprouts were absolutely amazing, crispy and flavorful. I had the smoked Rueben which was overpriced and not that memorable. The corned beef was cut thick which for me really didn't work for a sandwich. Our server was knowledgeable about the drink and food menu and service was very good. The restaurant was festive but a little too bright for an evening dinner. Spent some time at this establishment with family for the first time, and we had a good time. The whiskey selection was great, and the food was even better. We tried the fried ribs, gator bites and Cesar salad with salmon and shrimp. Everything we tried was very good especially the ribs.... Outstanding. They also have homemade Bbq sauces. Looking for dog friendly restaurants can be tedious, especially if you aren't familiar with the area. While visiting the area for Indiana Dunes National Park, we looked up dog friendly restaurants on BringFido. This restaurant received high marks so we decided to confirm via telephone and made the trip from our hotel. The staff was very polite and accommodating. The outdoor patio had perfect seating for us and our little Corgi! The pork belly was the highlight of our meal! It was tender, but had enough caramelization to make it almost taste like thick cut candied bacon. The brisket could easily be torn apart by a fork effortlessly. As our waitress mentioned, the baby back ribs fell right off the bones. Loved the raspberry BBQ sauce. Don't forget to order a whiskey! I'd recommend the baked blueberry sour. read more

We were traveling for a work trip and noticed this restaurant here on Yelp. The atmosphere was enjoyable, and the weather was nice so they had the doors open. They start out with homemade chips with various bbq sauces (medium, hot, raspberry, and rotating). My favorite was the raspberry because I'm a big fan of the flavor. We had the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. Experimenting with the sauces on them was fun. I had the Cajun Rubbed Ribeye, mainly because of the raspberry sauce, with bbq bacon baked beans. The raspberry sauce was amazing. The steak, however, didn't seem to have much flavor otherwise. Still enjoyable overall. For drinks, I had the blood orange martini, with vodka instead of whiskey. I also tried the blueberry something or other. It has an interesting presentation; comes in a mason jar, with a frozen ice cube of berries. It tasted almost like a blueberry cobbler. read more

Not what I would call "true" bbq, but decent Big portions, OK food, good service gets you a decent meal, plus they have a full bar to cover the whiskey side. Overall I liked this place, but it was just three stars for food, with a bonus star for service and drink options. I would say the pricing is fair for what you are getting. It is a nice place - linen place mats and quality service. Which is a little odd for BBQ, I concede. A great place for a business lunch, good for a date. Not awesome for great BBQ though. read more

We sat in the beautiful bar, I quite like the decor, it's very elegantly done with the mirrored objects and ceiling fans. On to the food, went with the trio slider option. You can get Duck, BLT (duck bacon), pulled pork and beef. The combinations are nicely paired with gourmet cheese. Server brings up extra BBQ sauce - Mild (has a bit of a spicy kick), Spicy, Raspberry and the Seasonal (Peach). Raspberry definitely has a unique fruity kick, but I do quite like the standard mild sauce. Drinks - it's in it's name, lots of whiskey options broken down by state or country. This place was everything I dreamed of!!! Lots of great whiskey. There is over 150 types of whiskey and the cocktails were awesome. Our service by Katey was excellent. She was very accommodating and was knowledgeable on the whiskey selections and food. My mother and sister had the brisket and mash potatoes which they enjoyed. The mash potatoes were flavorful with the right amount of herb and garlic. I had the trio with brisket, ribs, and pork butt. I couldn't have been happier with my selection folks. I love how they had different sauces that went with different meats. The Mac and cheese was one of the highlights of the visit. The vibe was everything! Brought my dad and husband here for Father's Day and really enjoyed the meal. I had the fried chicken sandwich, my dad had the 3-meat platter (to ensure he had leftovers) and my husband got the 2 meat. We all enjoyed brisket, chicken, pork, ribs. We also loved the sides. first time going there on a friends recommendation. my boyfriend and i met up with them. Server was not very well to us & barley checked on our table.. the manager came by more than she did. I'm giving 2 stars because the food was pretty good. I have 0 complaints about the food or the drinks in matter of fact. The biggest issue was service and service time. I had 5:30pm reservation. Me and my guest didn't get our food until 8:30pm. We ordered around 6:30pm. During that time multiple customers came in set down, ate, and left before we even got our food. On top of that, they still forgot a portion of our order. It wasn't overly crowded or anything. Waitress just simply forgot about us. Wow! Our visit to the True Barbecue Christmas Pop Up was one of the most fun times I've had this Christmas season!!! Even though they were busy, they were able to get us seated at a comfy set of chairs and a couch -- it was perfect for chatting, drinks, and appetizers. The drinks were so wonderful and festive! Between everyone in our group, we tried the hot toddy, the 24k magic, and a couple of others. They were all delicious and had a beautiful presentation. We tried the naughty shot and nice shot as well, so fun! We also had the brisket nachos and the fries with their Chipotle aioli and honey mustard dipping sauces. BOTH delicious! The fries were perfection and the brisket on the nachos was incredible. According to the employees -- they spent a total of 24+ hours decorating the restaurant. And you can tell! There is not an inch of space that doesn't have some sort of decoration. It's bright and shiny and fun! On top of ALL that! We had the most wonderful server, Andrea. She was fun and friendly and seemed to enjoy having us. I really liked this place! I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in the door, and found a place with a really hip vibe and decor. Totally not what I was expecting. I'm vegetarian, so I pretty much never go to a BBQ place, because typically their idea of a veggie option is a basic salad. But not here! They don't have a crazy big vegan menu, but they do have 3-4 different choices that are actually super legit and satisfying. I had the vegan reuben, which was really yummy. Also, I have no idea how they make their fries, but they're so good too. True to their name (ha), they have a huge whiskey selection as well. You can do flights of 4, which is what I ended up doing. You can choose whatever ones you want, which is a lot to choose from, so I ended up having our server choose for me. I definitely appreciate the flexibility, but maybe it would be a good idea to have 5 or so suggested flights printed in the menu? And one more point of feedback on the menu - the design is so tacky in comparison to how the rest of the place looks! This place really surprised me. Because it is directly in front of the hotel I was staying in, I thought I would give True a shot. It turned out to be much nicer and high end than the BBQ shack I expected. The draft selection was small, but very good with some local options thrown in. Loved the smoked wings. Big, juicy and had a great smoked flavor. Their whiskey selection has to be the best in the state. Well over a hundred and each with a brief description. Perfect for a non-aficionado like me. True BBQ stands out as a meat-lovers paradise that offers several meaningful vegan options. In fact, the vegan options are outstanding. My wife and I are about 75% vegan, but still eat meat occasionally. But, we came to True BBQ to give their vegan options a try. The location is uninteresting, but the restaurant itself is very pretty, clean, and top-notch. The friendly food to start is homemade BBQ chips and homemade pickles. Amazing (see picture). My wife has the vegan BBQ sandwich and I had the vegan Reuben. Both were outstanding. The coleslaw was a savory-heavy variation on traditional. And the fries were astonishing. I was really hungry and didn't feel like driving all over the place, so I stopped in here to see how the food was. The ribs were very meaty, which I liked. They came with a rub on them and it was rather sparse, but I could at least tell there was some on the meat. There were three sauces that were given to me to try. I tried the two that didn't say HOT. They tasted identical. One was suppose to be raspberry, but I couldn't taste a bit of anything remotely tasting like raspberry. The mild was just OK, nothing special. The mashed potatoes had a weird taste to them that I couldn't really even describe. Not sure what it was, nor do I ever want any of it again. I personally won't be returning to this place. Seems their Whiskey is the big turn on and I don't drink Whiskey, so no need for me to return. It was just an ok place. read more

Outstanding. That's the only word that comes to mind when I think of my experience at True. They know their BBQ! Loved the interior rustic decor. The patio is a real gem - very spacious and comfortable with two large fire pits (a unique element to the outdoor setting!). We ordered the seared gator with prickly pear cactus sauce. It was my first time trying alligator, and after this appetizer, it won't be my last! Very juicy and the sauce was the perfect touch! We also tried the burnt ends, and those were the JUCIEST burnt ends I've ever had - delicious! For my entree, I went with the St. Louis ribs. Let me tell ya, I haven't had ribs this good since I was in Texas. I am a HUGE BBQ fan, and being from Illinois, it is nearly impossible to find good 'que, much less ST. LOUIS RIBS. Happy to drive out to Munster for those bad boys. To finish things off, I tried the Garrison Brothers Bourbon. "True BBQ and Whiskey Bar" really is the perfect name for this place because that whiskey was fabulous and I am so glad this restaurant carries it (along with 120 other types of whiskeys!!). This is an exceedingly hard review to write, because under normal circumstances, this was a nice place with good food. The service really ruined the experience, though, and I can't help but drop the entire rating because of that. When we first entered, the hostess was showing us to our table, and we were held up by a crowd of people in front of us. One of the waitresses came up next to me, and started shouting at me in a very rude tone of voice, "Excuse me! Excuse me!" With no place to go, I shuffled to one side a bit which didn't really help her, but she ended going around me like she could have to start with. We got our seats, were prepared to order our drinks, and then waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, after a very distinct period of time, our server came, we asked for more chips, and two place settings that we were short when we first showed up, along with drinks. Then we waited, and waited, and waited again. Our server was outside taking care of other customers, but every time that she walked by our table, she would rigidly look ahead and not see (or ignored) our looks and gestures to see what was up. She finally came with our drinks, but no place settings or chips like we asked for. She provided one of our group with a cheaper whiskey than was ordered (but still intending to charge us the same price as the more expensive one), and when we wanted it fixed, it was a major wait again while we all waited for her to bring out the right one, but they were out of it. So, another major wait while the member in our party picks out another and she goes to get it. Now, there are all kinds of people outside, and even in the inside dining area that came in way after us, and they're already eating. We still haven't even ordered, because it takes her so long for the drinks. Finally, we get the last drink, and place our order, and start another grand wait. We finish our drinks, have no food, and are waiting and waiting, and can't get her attention. Finally, I go up to the bar, order our drinks myself, the bartender is very kind and does a superb job and offers to help with our server problem, so I tip her generously. I get back to the table, and the rest of the evening goes pretty much the same with long waits to get the check, or even just get checked on again. So, in summary, the service was absolutely one of the worst experiences that I've had in a restaurant. It took us over 2 1/2 hours to get dinner, and two drinks each, most of the time wishing we had something to eat or drink. In all fairness, I commend the place for having good vegan options, and tasty food (except for the vegan cole slaw). Likewise, the bartenders were very kind and helpful, so I can't say that all the service was bad. But even if the restaurant is stellar in every respect, they should never let such a bad employee tarnish their image and ruin the dinner of customers. read more

You can never go wrong with BBQ and Whiskey. Great selection of whiskey. I got the True style pulled pork. Sauce selections nice and even features a rotating flavor to keep things interesting. Two large square fire pits outside with seating..... NICE! The baby back ribs were tender and smoked well, the only thing I prefer is that the bbq sauce be cooked onto the ribs their ribs only come dry but pick a sauce and your fine. Oh! Great ambiance and great live music. The food was terrible, the burnt ends were nowhere near close to being burnt and were barely cooked. The steak was bland, but cooked perfectly.
